keyboard issues any1 ? - Epic 4G General

not every input on the hardware keyboard is recognized & I know this is an issue with the epic as I've read quite a few folks experiencing it around the web but I'm curious if any1 who frequents this site has it & maybe found a fix or something. its a real p.i.t.a having to constanty fix what I'm typing because of this issue. epic #2 because of this not trying to make it #3 to only happen again

+1 I have the same issue. No solution that I know of, maybe we are just too fast for it. LOL, hopefully we will wee a fix when the developer ROMs start coming out. I don't know. On a similar note, the spelling correction doesn't happen for me either. And I have the rocking screen. Although I'm not worried enough about any of that to get it swapped for a new one.

I am having the same issue... every now and then the keyboard doesn't recognize certain inputs especially hen you start typing pretty quickly on it...
BTW I typed when not hen just showing it is doing it now haha.
I use smart keyboard pro to allow the text prediction and edit to occur.
Hope this is a software issue not faulty keyboard...tried to take it in to sprint and the only thing they said they would do was do hard reset on the device and wipe all data.... ya that wouldn't do crap

I thought it was just me typing too fast. It seems like it doesn't register when two keys are hit too closely together

I actually noticed that when typing really fast, sometime the keyboard freezes up.
It SEEMS like its because the keyboard registers a button long press, because the phone opens up the little addition letters popup.
Either way its really annoying because I don't use any of the additional long press symbols! I'm hoping when custom roms are created, they can remove the button long press menu!

I think you guys should write down what buttons exactly aren't registering. If you all have the same issues with the same buttons, then its probably a fixable issue - or its hardware. If its issues with different buttons, then its probably going to be harder to fix.

it really isn't any certain buttons its just once you get to typing pretty fast it just can't keep up and will RANDOMLY miss letters... so my report would be that it isn't any certain letters at all just dependent on how fast your typing...
Another thing is that sometimes it isnt just when typing fast it happens as well when I'm typing slow

exactly .. and its annoying !

I'm fairly confident it's a hardware problem because if I press the buttons firmly (not hard but firm if that makes sense) it will register the letters regardless of how fast I type.

Yup, I've experienced this as well. It's annoying but not a dealbreaker, yet.

I feel like tipping my hat into this topic. I just switched from AT&T to Sprint, got the Epic, been a happy camper thus far. I have noticed the same exact keyboard issue, and I've noticed that it isn't getting as much coverage as it should be.
With my epic, it's COMPLETELY RANDOM. It'll happen 500 times in one sentence, and sometimes, it won't happen for an entire hour. It doesn't seem to be a hardware issue, because no matter how slow I type, or how firm I press down on the keys, the problem will rear it's ugly head.
I'll wait this out until the end of the 30 days. On the 29th day, if nothing's been done, via Sprint/Samsung or XDA, I shall swap for an Evo.

I use the keyboard constantly and have never experienced this.
I do routinely experience *extra* keypresses because of my giant fingers.

same here... had my epic since launch and never had or even heard of this issue until now...
I do however have issue w/ the onscreen keyboards auto correction feature and the fact that i can be difficult to go back and edit w/o arrow keys... but thats my gripe w/ swype... not the epic ... lol

Then I'm guessing its worth it to get a swap since not everyone is having this issue.

I would consider it a defect and as I use the keyboard pretty much exclusively for typing (I still can't figure out how the heck anybody uses a virtual keyboard - that's why I bought the Epic), I would definitely return it if I had any issues with the keyboard that I thought were caused by either a hardware or a software bug. If the second one I got was the same, I would return it again and get a different phone entirely, on a different carrier if necessary. That's how important I consider the keyboard.

Unfortunately, I have only two choices where I live now. Verizon or Sprint. And seeing as Verizon made me famous on the internet, I won't be going back to them anytime soon. Plus, their only good, keyboarded Android phone, the Droid 2, has the same crappy-feeling keyboard, and Motoblur/eFuse is the dealbreaker. (I do hold high hopes for the enV touch 2/enV Pro or whatever they're calling it, as the voyager form-factor is pretty neat, and the keyboard was actually decent)
Sprint seems to be batting a thousand when it comes to good Android phones. Not to mention their service is cheap and effective here.
Plus, not all bad. I think an Evo + Better Keyboard would be SWEET.

I'm actually having the same keyboard problem, where it misses a LOT of keypresses (depending on how fast I type). Is it really a defect in the phone?

I am having this, too, but I it seems like not everyone is. Guess it's going back to Sprint tomorrow.

5 phones since launch day ... all swapped for brand new ones because all have the issue. some weren't as bad as the others and since getting #5 a few days ago I seem to only have had it happen a few times .. folks claiming not to have it do u use the physical keyboard or swype for majority of inputs ? maybe ya just don't notice lol

Like I said, I use the physical keyboard exclusively. Never had this issue. I use it for searches, texts, personal emails, even business emails to customers. And I type fast enough that when Samsung put out that "world record" commercial with the guy using Swype a while back, I was like "that's supposed to be fast?"
I wonder if there is some service or app that is interfering with the keyboard on some of you guys' phones; something that's taking over the whole system for a half second every once in a while.

Ok my fellow nexus one lovers... I had a Nexus one for about a month, and upon first opening the phone, there was dust, so I immediately got a replacement. I thought it was cool that next day when I show up at work, they had sent me my replacement so I was quite suprised on the service. Anyways, the phone was great, loved every aspect EXCEPT when texting, it wouldn't register my delete, and instead, a stupid smiley... in a way, I was getting pissed cause google was "smiling" at me when I was trying to do something else.
So my question is, I really want to go back, or wait for the HD2, but I feel the nexus is a better fit, especially when I use almost all the google features... but the texting/screen issue is a factor... I know people all over have this issue, and there isn't a resolution yet (that I've found) so what do I do? Wait? Suck it up and get it again? What are your suggestions???

It took me 3 phones to get all my issues fixed. If you're worried about fast customer service, get a phone that is supported directly by a carrier (Mytouch3g, droid, etc).
I have a good friend who just got a droid after being a huge crackberry fan. He loves it.
The nexus one is a pilot program so there will be growing pains to endure.
In terms of the touch issues watch your other fingers around the edge of the touch screen. I notice whenever my screen goes wonky a finger that shouldn't be touching the screen is.
Keep in mind you can get other keyboards than the stock that are agruably better anyway.
Good luck and thanks for supporting Android.
Didnt realize you were talking about screen issues, since using Cyanogen I havent expierenced them, but I dont know if they've been fixed for regular users.
hmm I didn't pay any attention to it after I rooted/flashed cyanogen... guess I'm going to have to think about this one a little bit. but overall I loved it. Do you guys think it will be fixed.... someday?
Well its an issue that theyve been made well aware of on their support forums so I would assume theyre working on a solution, I dont know why they wouldnt be.
just curious, but are you using the stock keyboard?
No, im using better keyboard right now and use smart keyboard and swype from time to time, just like to mix things up every once in a while, I type so fast on this thing now that smart keyboard and better keyboard have pretty much made swype useless to me. Smart Keyboard is free in the market and Better Keyboard is like 2 bucks and is pretty similar but is theme-able which I like. I also dont use auto correct or suggestions or any of that stuff so I dont know how they work for those.

Smart Keyboard and Better Keyboard are really just the stock keyboard with minor differences and more customization (but nothing innovational), if you really want to enjoy your typing experience - I suggest installing the HTC_IME, the typing creation cooked up by HTC for their Sense UI phones.
Nothing really beats it, I don't see how anything could. Swype though, is lovely.
I still feel like I type faster on smart or better keyboard, it could be I just havent gotten used to HTC IME yet, i used it all the time on my mytouch but ive just gotten so use to these keyboards that I dont even have to look to type, like typing this whole thing for example. I guess in the end its all just personal preference.
whats the "htc ime" ? link? seems interesting

That's just a defective phone, and your second one is also defective. It happens... it could happen with the Evo too.
Whether I'd say someone should switch depends on what you like and dislike about both phones. Why did you buy an Epic in the first place? Have those reasons suddenly changed? Is uploading faster than 150kbps right now more important than any of the reasons why you bought the phone to begin with?
If you've decided you like the Evo better, then switch. I wouldn't switch because of a relatively minor GPS issue with an easy workaround, and I personally wouldn't switch because of this upload cap (I have yet to have it cause me a problem), although if you're a heavy uploader, then maybe... then again, it's probably going to get fixed at some point and then you might feel pretty dumb.
I bought an Epic because of the keyboard, so unless the phone was basically non-functional, there's no way I'd want to switch to an Evo. If you like the Evo better, though, then go for it. I just don't know why someone would buy an Epic in the first place if they really wanted an Evo, though.
Switching to the EVO would be even more depressing than the problems the Epic is experiencing. I mean the processor on the EVO is soooo outdated.
I'm sticking with the Epic.
lol i remember when evos snapdragon was all the rage haha
but yeah upload speeds fluctuating signal where my hero didnt have that problem yes battery life

now while the snapdragon may not be as fast as the hummingbird, its no slowpoke either. My nexus NEVER slowed down unless an app froze it. Other than that it flew. The main bottleneck in the snapdragon chipset is the freakin sucky adreno gpu.

The snapdragon might have been "all the rage" back in january when it was put in the nexus one... but when it was still being used when the EVO rolled, I was a little upset. Yeah, I'm mainly talking about the GPU. The hummingbird isn't that much faster than the snapdragon sans GPU... but it is a LITTLE bit. Considering iPhones have always had some sort of GPU in them, I figured android would too. It's nice that the anroid manufacturers are finally catching on.
The Epic has video codecs as well. Combined with the GPU, high definition videos are a breeze to watch without having to convert This is a Godsend for me.

I agree that Swype is wayyyy better than just typing in a touch keyboard and I'm so happy that it came with (I couldn't deal with my bf's touch keyboard so I knew I needed a physical one) but there are just some things that are better with a keyboard.
Does anyone use it? Because I was just wondering if other people found that it skips letters sometimes? Gets a little annoying when I'm typing a longer e-mail of sorts. When I had a Rant, I remember having to almost break it in before all of the keys were at the same sensitivity. (Namely just the Y key...I almost returned it, got lazy, and it just got better on its own...used to have to stop and smash it in to get it to work.) Anyone else have minor keyboard issues?
Personally I have no problems with the hardware keyboard and missing letters. I use the hardware keyboard for anything over a sentence or so. But yeah no problems for me. Maybe I just got lucky

I use it all the time, and never had it skip letters unless it was my fault for not hitting them properly. I love the keyboard but it's still not perfect for me; the letters are maybe a little too far apart, so I sometimes hit in between two letters. Can't really fault the phone for that, though; at least not the build.
It does seem like the space bar actually has two buttons under it (like it's a double length key, so it gets two standard key buttons), and I seem to hit it twice sometimes if I roll my thumb a little bit when I press it. But other than that, I have no problems with the functionality of the keyboard, I just need to get used to the key spacing. I'm coming from an HTC Fuze, which had all the letters jammed up right next to each other.

I mainly chose this phone over the Evo for it's lack of Sense UI. I've had the HTC Hero before it was even released to the public, and an Evo is just an oversized, super fast version of that... No thanks.
I like AOSP style text, e-mail, and speed. Gotta thank Darch for that one.
the keyboards the main reason lol
but i use launcherpro plus on my epic as i hate you cant remove icons from the dock in touchwiz did the same when i had the hero even with sense still on it was noticably faster same on evo if i had it..........but i am eagerly awaiting 2.2 and roms and such
and yes the lack of mms on wifi annoying very as the hero could

Possible Cause of Keyboad Lag found, need DEV help...

I posted this as a response in a thread about keyboard lag being gone in 2.2 but it is not and thought it would get more attention in its own thread.
formula84 said:
So for me even with all keyboards off and device keyboard settings off i still get some missing keys.
I believe I may have found the source to the problem though, as this problem seems to still happen even without any software keyboards. It must be in the os or driver, my issues are always with the keys that when long pressed bring up a menu choice of softkeys.
Mostly s,e, and l i notice it the most with. i.e. long press e, you'll get; è é ê ë ę ě ē. If i try multiple eeeeeeeee presses i get this popup occasionally as if i am long pressing and you can clearly see it misses some of the presses for e, also try mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm or ppppppppppppppppp i never have the lag issues with these as when long pressed they just repeat with not pause and popup.
I think the lag (loss of letters) is due to the OS interjection monitoring the length of key-press to determine if this prompt should be shown.
What would be great is if a developer could determine what controls this feature and strip it from the rom/kernel/driver whatever it is. I will never use this as it is only for non-English characters anyway.
Hopefully the right person reads this and looks into it, as i feel this could be the source of our issue.

To be honest the whole phone seems to randomly lag for a 1/2 a second. Not only the keyboard keys but also screen touches and the captivate buttons also.

IMHO, the most obvious likely culprit is cpu-scaling & power management. Graffiti was basically unusable on the Hero until I used SetCPU to lock the cpu to 528-712mhz. Then it worked *flawlessly*. If the phone aggressively slows down, cautiously speeds up, and always waits to decide whether it just saw a tap, hold, or drag... it won't matter if its nominal max speed is 2GHz... it'll *still* lag.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I can tell this is a software issue, because since my "upgrade" to 2.2.1, the Epic's keyboard drops about twice as many letters. I highly doubt that this is a hardware issue, particularly given the general expansion of hardware and software development in the phone realm; The G1's keyboard was absolutely perfect in terms of letter management, and even my ancient T-mobile Dash (HTC Excalibur) typed flawlessly. Would Samsung really develop a POWERHOUSE phone, with a keyboard that couldn't keep up?
This is a gripe that will remain until the issue is fixed, however it would certainly help if the the keyboard issue was addressed by Samsung.
Either way, yeah, this keyboard issue totally blows and detracts from the value of the phone significantly. However, wait until FroYo is completely finished and pushed out officially. If the keyboard remains unfixed then we can get more active, whether it requires internal xda development to solve the issue, or contacting Samsung, to make sure the Epic functions as expected.
Just my $0.02.
Would love to see this looked into.

[Q] Keyboard Lagginess on display units

I just got home from Best Buy where I played with their Xoom for about 20 minutes. Anytime I tried to use the keyboard (in the browser or just doing the google search on the home page), the keyboard only registered like 1/5 keystrokes I made. The line "just testing out this new xoom" would come out as "j tesgo t ewom" or something like that. I watched as I was typing and it looked like the keys were lighting up. Is this just a bad display unit or does the keyboard really suck this bad?
Let me put it this way, I am typing this on my xoom almost as fast as I can type on a computer. It does get laggy in the browser on more complex sites, but it shouldn't lead to that much mispelling. The keyboard is at least as good as the ipad in terms of speed.

The xda forum makes the browser lag like crazy, probably because of all the elements that are on the page at once. Use the xda app instead.
Not sure, but as far as my personal experience goes, every single floor unit of any device I've tried is always slower than the real thing. With the amount of abuse that the devices get, and in the case of Android the people messing with things that they don't know the reason for make everything laggy.
I remember using the Galaxy Tab at a T-mobile kiosk and having it run pretty smooth, then trying one in a Sprint store than absolutely lagged out and crashed several times. It really depends what people have been doing to them.
Let me also +1 the Xoom soft-keyboard- between the responsiveness and accuracy of the touchscreen, the size of the keys, and the medium autocorrect setting, what used to be a chore typing on soft keyboards has now made sending E-mails FAR easier (which my client certainly appreciates, as now I respond to E-mails coming thru in late at night or early AM much faster ).
I found that when I went to bestbuy the display unit was terrible because everyone installed apps and put a ton of widgets on the desktop. When I actually got my own xoom it was perfect and never had any issue browsing or using the keyboard. So I guess the point I am trying to make is that its more what people put on it then the unit itself and when you have tons of people messing with it a lot of things get screwed up.

The unit at the best buy I was at didn't have a google account tied to the device. You couldn't use the market, gmail or any google application. So nobody put extra apps or widgets on there. Maybe they messed with the settings? All I know is the keyboard was horrible. It would enter a couple letters, miss a couple letters. Half way through typing something it would auto-close the keyboard. Something must have been messed up, I guess. Otherwise I assume everybody would be complaining, which they aren't. I just wish I could have tested the device with the keyboard working correctly so I knew what to actual expect since I'm still on the fence between this and the ipad 2.
Sorry but its not the store unit's fault. This is something ive noticed and subsequently been annoyed with using my Xoom. Usually its while im using the keyboard in the browser window. It just cant keep up and misses keystrokes. It wouldnt be so bad if the keystrokes were just behind, but it lags enough where it doesnt even register some keystrokes. but like i said this is mainly in the browser. Plus for the person who mention Angry birds, i noticed this myself. Which is something thats alway bothered me about Non-Apple(dont shoot me im not a fanboy) hardware/software. If there was one thing i never experienced on my iphone/ipad it was subsequent slowdown while using apps and such. Everything was as quick the first time as it was the last time. Slowdown to me is a major nusiance becuase it seems to happen in intervals as apposed to consistantly. i hate that. Sometimes AB is smooth as silk other times its choppy, but i never know why or when.
I have noticed the lag too. Not on all sites but some especially XDA.I have seen many others complain about the same thing in other posts. Obviously an issue that needs to be corrected by Google in an update.
I have yet to see any lag playing Angry Birds.

Interesting since the unit I messed with had a ton of stuff. The only time I have noticed some keyboard lag occasionally was in the web browser when on some intensive websites but other than that seems to be fine. As a note you could try out a different keyboard on it if they actually have a Google account such as swift key and see if that helps. Also id see if you can go to another store such as Verizon and test it out there since normally it works well without lag for me.
That is very strange, I played with my new xoom and it was quick on all apps except for SBM but it makes sense since its not optimized yet but as far as browser and keyboard I haven't experienced any lag yet. Side note Google body was very underwhelming.... more for children then Med students or anything past high school.

My problems with the keyboard are how it freezes up during a keystroke and the only way to stop it is to turn the Xoom all the way off. It can be a bit laggy, but it seems to depend more on the app being used vs the keyboard its self.

Ya it probably depends on if the app is optimized yet for honeycomb so the keyboard lag issue should be fixed when everything becomes more compatible.

[Q] Issues with G2, will root fix

Okay i just got the g2 in the mail and iv really really have been trying to like this phone. I guess im old fashion but i mainly use my phones with one hand as a result the first thing do is change the keyboard to t9. This has never been a problem on any other phone. 9x out of ten on the g2 the t9 is disabled for whatever reason. If i try to search anything in the browser the t9 option is missing entirely. as a result i have to push one number 2 or three times making it a long process. iv tried 3rd party keyboards but at best they just revert back to the full keyboard. Other issues iv had include the text massage app has dissappeared from my qslide. The screen is real buggy and unresponsive and the signal is poor compared to my rezound. are these issues that can be solved with root should i exchange this phone for another g2 or are these just commöm issues
You just live in a crap area if your signal is bad.. try getting this new thing called a wireless router. Also just hold the phone with your left hand and swyping...trust me your not as important as you think you are that your left useless hand is to busy to hold your phone while you type...

I don't have your problems. Actually my G2 has the best reception of most smartphone i've had recently.
Jrgilbert not only did your response not make any sense but it was useless as you didnt even attempt to answer my questions. why do people with mothing to add to the conversation always feel the need to join. I would have replied to you directly but every time i pressed the end of your text from my phone it jumped to the middle. Anyway im not trying to bash the phone at all it just seems like the software could have been done better. also the hardware screen is pretty scratched up and also i never thought i lived in a bad area as my rezound had full 4g bars but the g2 only gets one or two and slower speed test. i want to keep the phone at least u
Could not finish statement as thd text again was jumping to the middle of the paragraph but let me repeat i want to keep this phone at least until one with a better camera and an sd card is released i just want to know will root eventully fix my issues.

Just ignore people like that, I have had similar experiences with people on here. I will say that, for me, as far as texting with one hand goes, I love how the keyboard on this thing can be moved to the right or left of the screen , to make it easier to use one hand. I don't know if you've discovered that feature yet, but give it a try if you haven't.
No such issues with the g2 as reported. Its a fabulous phone. Everything is going well for me. You landed with a defective piece. Get it replaced before it is too late
