HD2 PIN won't unlock phone with correct PIN - HD2 General

After having had my HD2 (4th HTC phone) for around 5-6 months, had to do a hard reset ftaer having a problem with the HD2 not recognizing my phone PIN #. Having now had the problem and doing a online search, seems this bug is a fairly common problem. I'd installed a couple of new Garmin maps (China mainland) and altered the gmsup file to read "LOCAL_VER=TAIWAN" from "LOCAL_VER=CHINA" which allows for the use of co-ordinates within GarminXT.
On the next restart of Garmin it started in Traditional Chinese, as opposed to
English or Simplified Chinese. No problem just changed the language settings to what I wanted.
Used the HD2 for several days without incident (and had not made any other changes or installed anything else), then used my Garmin on my HD2 to navigate a distance of around 380km (usually not a problem). Twice during the journey an advisory popup appeared with something like "Garmin unable... not enough memory... must shut down" - a message I've never had before, on any of my HTC's let alone the HD2.
Garmin then automatically shut down and I simply restarted it from my home screen shortcut, which it did without issue. The first time this popup message appeared I'd covered at least 150km. The second time I'd travelled another 80km or so. After it had occured again, I turned the phone off, waited 5-10 seconds and then turned the phone on again. The HD2 requested my usual SIMcard PIN, followed by the phone unlock PIN (simple 4 digit numeric PIN) and as usual I entered my respective PIN's (I use the same 4 digit PIN for both the Simcard and phone unlock). The Simcard unlocked fine, but the phone did not and I was presented with something along the lines of "incorrect password, please re-enter..."
In the end, after trying everything I could think of... soft reset, removing battery, trying PIN... 1234, 0000, 9999, and a few times getting "too many password attempts... enter a1b2c3 to continue". Once I got home a few days later I tried connecting to my two computers via activesync in the hope that they'd access what I wanted to copy etc. Unfortunately that did not work as both activesync connections asked for the phone to be unlocked, even though they'd been setup to unlock the HD2 automatically. I realised that inevitably I'd have to do a dreaded hard-reset. Pity as my last backup with Spb Backup and PIMbackup were done many months ago.
In my searches online I did find a couple of posts that made some references to users experiencing the same 'HD2 lockout' having installed Traditional Chinese and then having this problem. Though there seems there are far too many different situations that could also cause the HD2 to lock.
Also it's not the first time I've played or altered, installed GarminXT... and I don't think it's the first time I've had GarminXT start in Traditional Chinese. It maybe just coincidence... but for now, I'm trying to setup my phone back to the way it was after the dreaded reset.

password changed has happened to a fair number of people, and is probably nothing to do with the garmin stuff.
Never read of anyone finding a way around it other than hard reset, though.

i vaguely remember reading that the mentioned PIN issue is sometimes related to swype...might want to look into that avenue.

It's just happened to me. I installed swipe keyboard and done soft reset, then entered my pin but hd2 will not accept it. Any one found a solution to this?

Had this once too, though I didn't know anything about swype back then .(Didn't have it on my phone)
I simply turned off the device, removed the battery AND THE SD CARD then re-insert them after 5 minutes it should accept PIN normally (If not, then try to remove the sd card and don't re-insert it just boot) . (happened to me when i Just left Android DS V5 and went to WinMo, My device wouldn't accept the PIN)

Found this. Don't have a clue how to use this, but maybe someone knows and can shed some light.
Just check out the 'Solution' at the following address. I have not got permission to enter link or full web address.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768815
Hope this can rescue my hd2 and all who have the same pin lock problem.

I also experienced this problem that HD2 forgot my PIN. even 2 my colegues too.
back in the time when I got stuck on "enter PIN" screen, I found somewhere on the internet, that HD2 only forgets PIN, when you have exchange server set up. They say that it's not HD2's fault, but microsoft's. it's just a matter of time, when you get to this problem. the only solution is HardReset without any possibility backing your data up! since then I don't use exchange at all... never again in my HD2!

HD2 unlock Pin Code for SURE....
goto: HKLM/Microsoft/Software/Shell/Lockscreen/
check for DWord: Active and change it to '0'
check for Dword: Enable and change it to '0'
check for Dword: ShowLockScreenPicker and change it to '0'
reset your device and enter ur password and it will accept it.. now in settings u can navigate to Lock option and disable it easily only if u remember your code and it does not accept the code.

SIM recognition errors, among other problems

So I bought a TyTN around two months ago... I use it on the Cingular network with no problems the entire time.
Today around noon it starts bugging out on me. It freezes, so I restart it and it isn't reading the SIM for some reason. I restart again, it takes ten minutes to recognize the SIM, and when it does it freezes.
I looked up on how to hard reset it, and it seemed to be going all right, but then it continued to have the same problems. Now it doesn't even recognize the SIM.
When I connect the phone to my laptop via USB it gives a quick three tones and Activesync is not registering anything. I need to know what to do to try and get my phone functional again...
Sorry for reposting, but someone in the previous thread I created stated I needed more info in my header... Valid point...
Also, when starting up, during the HTC splash, "No GSM" appears among the red letters that are shown... I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

HD2 Forgot my PIN

I have been relatively calm about the shortcomings of my HD2. I understand when purchasing anything even slightly touched by the delicate hand of Microsoft that you will have to tweak, fix and workaround - this is all part of the fun with the phone.
Today however the phone went one step too far. I awoke this morning to find my HD2 had yet again forgotten my PIN number, so on unlocking the screen I was informed that I had entered the incorrect PIN(!). I soft reset the device, removed the SIM card, let it stand for a few seconds then booted up again to no avail.
I have now entered the 'incorrect' PIN too many times, and so my device has deleted all information on it... losing all contacts, photos etc.
For a phone to get something so basic so wrong is unforgivable. Coupled with the issues with SMS (i.e. texts sitting in the outbox, and when it finally decides to send them, they go to the wrong people, taking an age to load conversations), I think HTC/Microsoft have a problem they need to address.
Sorry to hear of your problems, but by far the majority have not had any of the problems you have mentioned. Try a hard reset and remember to back up your device.
Mine has lost connection settings and 2 email accounts at the same time. Your problem is much worse of course. Instead of a finished phone i feel like part of an experiment at the moment, and HTC will finish the Rom whenever they can be bothered..

I have had this incorrect PIN message also. sometimes when left over night and occasionally during the day.
So far a soft reset has solved it. Since having my HD2 I've had to reset it 1 - 2 times a day. Not very impressed at its lack of stability.
I have a SIM free unlocked UK HD2
Is this all happening on the stock rom or cooked roms?

stock rom i have the original 1.43 i think and i have had this problem, was begining to think i was the only one!
Also My HTC HD2 lost its password already twice
Hello, I can add to this threat that I also had an unexpected and incorrect ' wrong password' experience twice, where my password (8 digits, correctly entered) was suddenly not accepted anymore. Soft resets did not help and I had to restore previous backups loosing recently entered data. Very annoying and in my view not acceptable.

Very annoyingly this has also happened to me. My phone ran out of battery last night, and when plugged back in a few minutes later, the device didn't recognise my four digit pin.
Is there some sort of generic pin it resets to?
Am now locked out for 30 minutes at a time, and very worried the next time I try and get it wrong all my data will be wiped.
Can I back up my contacts/data on to my PC despite the phone being locked? (Am at work right now so can't check for myself)
Great phone but this is unacceptable
2 Options:
1) don't lock your phones with a pin code
2) flash a cooked Rom as they have been more stable based on feedback that I have been reading.

The problem is I have to have my phone hooked up with my work email/calendar etc and for some reason it insists on a pin
Sorry but - what does "flash a cooked rom" mean?
Thanks
Sam
oh and soft resets haven't worked here either

How to flash a cooked ROM:
Step 1:
Read the first page <<HERE>>..
Step 2:
Then select a cooked Rom From <<HERE>> in the list where it says [ROM]. Read <<THIS>> for more guidance. But it's not necessary to read it because if you go BACK TO STEP 1 there is also a video that shows you what to do with the ROM FILE after you have downloaded it. REREAD STEP 1 when you have everything in place as it's that simple. Make sure your read the WHOLE PAGE OF STEP 1 before you begin and even during the process there is TROUBLE SHOOTING DETAILS THAT ARE IMPORTANT.
thanks band27
I've had to hard reset and because I couldnt connect my phone because it was locked I'm not been able to back up some bits.
Reading elsewhere it appears like a WM 6.5 problem. absolutely pathetic, but why htc hasnt sorted it as well is quite a disgrace.
i've decided not to get my work emails back on my device so i don't need a pin, its my own mobile anyway so they can take a walk!
password dissapear
hi.
i have had some experience of passwords dissapearing so each time i use one of any of my 3 email accounts on the hd2 it requred me to re-enter my password.
the same thing logging into latitude on google maps
i figured out i can repeat the fault every time by installing swipe keyboard, or un-installing it !!
dont even know if this is the real reason it happens but it works ( or fails ) each time and i tried it on a few different roms now !
=====PEACE=====
i have the same problem and i have been tring to unlock phone after restart and it keep saying incorrect pin and im locked out.
Not recognizing my pin (again)
I bought the HTC HD2 end of january. Nice phone. But after 1 week it didn't recognize my pin anymore. Fortunately the shop where I bought it, has a '14 days not happy with the phone get another one'-policy. So I gat another HTC HD2. Had to install everything again and lost everything I had stored on the other phone. But the new phone worked !
Till yesterday evening. Again the HTC HD2 didn't recognize my pin
I tried to install the ROM-update. But that doesn't work, because you have to unlock the phone for that (otherwise there's no connection between my phone and my computer). Also tried the hard reset. Nothing works.
I hope someone has a solution for me. Cause I'm really getting tired of this.
i don't know, i unlock my sim pin since my first phone, my e-mail accounts are working fine, i don't have any of these problems so far, i bought mine january
This has happened to me a few times where a soft reset worked and once where it didn't (lost all data). Each time it was first thing in the morning and my alarm didn't work. That was on 1.48, since going 1.66 I haven't had either problem occur and it's been almost a month.
J
Which PIN is this? The phone lock or the SIM PIN?
If it's the phone lock, can it be disabled by de-selecting it. This would be a horrible thing to happen if it couldn't be disabled.
i had a big problem with my HD2, I was in the bath and I dropped it of course it got wet but now that blasted crappy stock htc software thingy won't even switch on.....
Next time i'll flash a cooked rom.

Lock Screen slowly but surely pissing me off!

Hi everyone,
My phone has been flashed with 2 different roms in the last 48 hours; the reason for this is the lock screen keeps locking me out!
I try something new each time this happens because I spend hours or even days modifying it to my taste!
Can someone please explain why it keeps locking me out and also how to prevent it! and before someone says "Don’t have a passcode" then that is simply not an option!
Also if someone knows a way around this so I can simply change the passcode without having to hard reset then please tells me! this would have been the second time in 48 hours Iv lost data and this has happened about 6 times since I have had the phone from November
Cheers,
Does it say incorrect pin? or just hangs?
incorrect pin! and its the right pin!
and then if I soft reset and try and enter it then it says incorrect pin but if I then type something else in it hangs!
Ive had the same problem with the stock rom. I use Artemis HD2 v9.0 in the rom section. Hes bringing out V10 tomorrow might be worth putting that on. Ive not had that problem since.
seen that reported a lot in conjunction with swype 3.9 on non tmous phones

Havn't got swype and never had it, I read its a bug with 6.5 and 6.5.3 fixes it but I dont like 6.5.3 so im in a catch 22 situation.
Im assuming you guys didnt find away around it or hear from anyone who had then?
I don't know if this is related but my phone keeps frezzing in the lock screen. It happens twice each day and I need to remove the battery to get my phone working again. I have tried several roms and several radios and it happens before to place any extra program (done hard reset etc)
It was not happening with the stock rom. I guess that perhaps it is a problem of the HSPL2? I don't see anything else that has a common link.
well, I used to have a pin lock on my ipaq, now with this hd2 I've become fearless, and have no phone/sim pin enabled at all.
Anyway, as far as I know the PIN lock on the hd2 has been reported way too often to be defective, as in it "forgets" the code, so after N unlocks, you'll have a device that will never recognize your -correct- pin, requiring a hard reset.

so could it be something in the registry?
I know its a long shot but registry normally has control for things like expiry and load counts
I think I have gathered more information about this problem and I have created a separate thread describing what the problem may be, please go here to understand what im on about.
More info: Phone is going into a read only like state!
I have had this too a few times. I had to remove the battery to have it fixed, because the phone didn't switch off.
Just in case anyone is reading this that could help, i am trying to get a cab that will revert the HD2 back to the stock windows mobile unlock screen for the pin input. the HTC one seems to have a few issues, and i prefer the stock windows one.

If WM lock bringing much trouble, try http://pocketshield.net which is easier to manage and has even more usefull features.

SOLVED: HD2 "forgets" the screenlock PIN

So last night I decided to protect my HD2 with the password as many other naive souls apparently did and got burnt with (I learned this the hard way too . So i went to settings, security, phone lock, check marked "Prompt if phone unused for", left all other fields at their defaults - 0 minutes, simple PIN, entered my four digits, re-entered it. turned device off, on - nice password sceen .... and f&&^%&^% .... I can't unlock it WTF it does not accept my PIN ? I was outrgaged.
Of course my last backup was done 3 month ago and hard reset would quite some ammount of data loss. I spent 4 hours today reading and poking around and finaly I made the damn thing to accept my PIN !
Here is what I did:
1. downloaded ceregeditor, connect, run as administrator
2. changed from 1 to 0 the key HKLM/software/microsoft/shell/lockscreen , mentioned in this thread
3. softreset and voila - the thing still prompts for the password, but this time it DOES accept my PIN !
I am running stock T-Mobile ROM 2.13.531.1 (90963) WWE which was doing the job OK for me ... until now
moisha, have you had any further lock out and pin not being accepted?
I am a bit confused, as when the phone remains locked then how will the ceregeditor be able to access the hd2 and allow one to edit the registry?
NOT SOLVED: HD2 "forgets" the screenlock PIN
Actually, I tried what was posted and, as anticipated, ActiveSync prevented CERegEditor from connecting to the HD2. Unless there is some way to circumvent the password lock blocking ActiveSync, I can't see how this can work.
Yes if this worked, it could have saved me a LOT of time and hassle a month or two ago. for what it's worth most problems on this seemed caused by Swype or CHT 1.8 (not sure on 2.0). But again I can't see how CEEditor could have access to the Reg without gettingthrough the PIN first.
If that did work tho, great! I got so peeved off last time this happened that I went straight over to Android and haven't returned yet!
Yep, I'm about to do what I was trying to avoid....the dreaded HARD RESET! Curse all those who contributed to this bug. Anyway, if I don't soon find some way to access the files on-board the HD2 device, via an alternate to WMDC (ActiveSync), I'm biting the bullet in 1/2 an hour. I've exhausted all my Google search patience...and still no solution found.
Why don't you try PocketShield or S2U2?

Unable to change PIN on the Desire HD

I've encounter an interesting problem with my Desire HD, which I'm not certain if it is a fault.
Like all mobile phones, you can enable SIM locking for which the phone will prompt for a PIN whenever it's switched on.
However this was never the case with my Desire HD (Vodafone Australia ROM), as every time I tried to change my SIM's PIN, it failed. Despite I had the check box ticked (for lock SIM card), it never ask for a PIN when I power up the unit.
Then I took the SIM out and put it into a normal mobile, it turn out the lock SIM feature was not enabled (despite it's ticked in the Desire HD). After I've enabled SIM lock with the SIM and changed the PIN on the SIM with a different mobile phone, followed by putting the SIM card back into the Desire HD - bingo, it prompt for the PIN for the first time.
Now I tried to change the PIN with the Desire HD - it repeatedly failing with a message saying "Incorrect PIN!", despite it has pass the Old PIN check and prompt for the new PIN and new PIN retype. The number of retries never decrement - always stuck at the count of 3 (despite it says Incorrect PIN).
I once tried to show this problem to the distributor - but the problem stopped showing at the store. Now 2 weeks afterward and I've re-tried the scenario - the problem re-appeared.
I wonder if I'm a one off case, or is this a known defect with the Desire HD or a defect confined with the Vodafone Australia ROM.
Just tested on mine (UK unlocked/unbranded DHD on Vodafone). The SIM had been carried over from my old phone with the existing pin code and worked fine. Just changed it, powered off then on. Pin was asked for and it accepted the new pin. Changed pin back to my old pin, powered off/then on and, again, the pin was asked for and accepted.
Dave
Thanks for trying out.
As this feature is probably the least use feature, it is unlikely there will be any significant response on this topic.
I've reported this to HTC and their response is to perform a "Factory reset" and see if the problem persist - seriously this is not really acceptable as I'm reporting a fault and all they care about is to see if resetting the unit will "fix" the problem.
There are two issues I have with this approach:
1: It is uncertain if the problem will go away afterward
2: I will loose all my settings / apps on the unit after the reset
Why can't they be a bit more constructive with a proper internal diagnosis first?
Ever found a solution? I have the same prob. the sim 'retries' always stay at 3.
The sim may vary, uim seemed fine will old sim from 2007 stuck? My test result.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
same problem as @tleehm above
@tleehm have you managed to find a solution? I have the exact same problem with same scenario much appreciative of your reply
I suppose it can be some lock on the SIM card preventing You from changing/turning off PIN code.
I experienced the same issue, and tried to put my SIM in two other phones other tha htc desire HD and turn off the PIN code on them - all failed.
I have corporate SIM card so I am pretty sure that it is unable to turn off PIN code on them.
