As many of you will have seen I've been quite active on this forum from the moment I joined. I want to figure everything out for myself as much as possible, but it's just not possible to look up (and find!) everything. Thus, here are the questions that I can't find an answer for myself:
1) How do I change the standard SW keyboard, without it resetting after a soft reset? (E.g. to blackstone keyboard)
2) How do I change a registry value, without it resetting after a soft reset, when it normally does? (For instance the value whether your headset is plugged in, I want it to be default ON.)
3) How can I extract a cab file from a ROM? I would like to get WLive messenger from the stock ROM, but I just can't find a guide anywhere!
4) Is there a way to fix the problem that occurs with the HW keyboard when Blackstone SW keyboard is installed? The problem is the first keytap not being registered correctly, so the first letter ends up being the second or later. Call it input lag.
I intend to add the found answers to this post, as well as add other hard to answer questions others may have. That is, if an answer exists. Thanks in advance for those who try to help.

1) How do I change the standard SW keyboard, without it resetting after a soft reset? (E.g. to blackstone keyboard)
Use either Sktools to set it as default (it then uses a small program that starts up in startup folder) or Sipchange http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=271008 (not certain if this one works anymore)
2) How do I change a registry value, without it resetting after a soft reset, when it normally does? (For instance the value whether your headset is plugged in, I want it to be default ON.)
the headset is a tricky one, one way would be to run a script (mortscript maybe) to change the reg entry at startup, but I don't know how often the headset is polled (if at all) to check whether it's in or not).
3) How can I extract a cab file from a ROM? I would like to get WLive messenger from the stock ROM, but I just can't find a guide anywhere!
depends on whether it's a cab or not, unlikely. First you need to extract the rom, there are plenty of threads on this. but's it's obvious if you've tried a rom kitchen, you bung the ruu-signed.nbh in the baserom folder, start the kitchen.cmd and follow the instructions.
Then pour over all the folders and see if there's a cab. If there isn't you need to build one.
search for quickcab as a start (although that one doesn't allow you to import reg files (or *.rgu as they come out in the roms) so you have to do it manually.
4) Is there a way to fix the problem that occurs with the HW keyboard when Blackstone SW keyboard is installed? The problem is the first keytap not being registered correctly, so the first letter ends up being the second or later. Call it input lag.
use a different keyboard, I've not had this issue, but then I prefer the raphael one. There's plenty of other free keyboards about, lifes too short to work out why the software keyboard off one piece of hardware doesn't work with another.. ;P

Haha, I'm afraid you're right on that one fards.
Thanks for your replies, can you give me a link to the raphael keyboard? I'd like to check it out.
Also, I've got tools to create a cab, but extracting a ROM the way you proposed will probably prove difficult, I'll look into it.
The headset value is polled by for instance the FM radio and audiobooster from HTC.

I can't even remember where I got teh keyboard cab from, I'll post it when I get the phone working again!
extracting the rom really is easy, the kitchens make it simple..
that new rom kitchen I linked to makes it even easier, but I still prefer the out and out gui pleasantness that's Pofs Linux rom kitchen
I don't mind answering your's and gtrabs questions, they seem to be the right questions !
just noticed I'm rapidly approaching a kilo posts, must make sure it's not a grumpy post that one...
I managed to miss some text out, but basically when you find the folder containing your desired files take the files out of the folder you want, including the corresponding 409 (or whatever language) folder and stick 'em in the cab software pretty easy to do .
Sometimes it doesn't work so try changing something or try to see if there's a dependency that's missing.
it's really not as secret or hard to do as it's sometimes is made out to be. The hard work has been done by the genius who write the software to let us do this.
turns out it's Smabergs keyboard I use..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2966597
Ah, very nice. Thanks. I've tried smabergs, it has some bugs (landscape mode broken) and it doesn't seem to be supported anymore. Will tinker around with it a bit, as it's good for portrait mode. (Blackstone, but then without the bugs!)
Of course you can find the anwsers to the blackstone cabs, if you would search them all individuality.
I found numerous people asking this question. Call them lazy, but this forum does not make it easier to find information in a convenient way. All i want is to make a nice overview of what all the cabs do and what they look like.
Member Norti has done the same with all the programs/tweaks. If you continue your statement you might also think that topic is unnecessary. I think this forum is very unorganized. Do you think its strange that people keep asking the same questions? I think the problem here is not in the hands of the people asking, but in the forums way of storing data. The search function is not a great tool to search with. Does anyone have some input so we kan make it better?
Maybe this is the wrong topic to post this in, but i thought it was a question many would like to have answered...

Fair enough. Do me a favor and move that post to a seperate topic, it's quite long.
Im new to the whole Windows Mobile world and having serious issues with adding keyboards, fonts, etc... Ive always had Blackberry and im used to using and modding that, figured it was time to move on and got the HD2 and now im confused as hell! Can someone please post links, how to, to download the HTC IME keyboard? Also how to add fonts? this is really irritating.. Ive searched and searched and still cant figure out how to get the keyboards and fonts on my phone ... Any help is greatly appreciated!
Any1???????
Just curious, but where did you find the buttons and such? Posting link-backs will give us a chance to see what you are talking about instead of trying to guess.
Did they not have instructions on how to install them?
Did you perchance download the versions meant for chefs, that are designed to be cooked in the kitchens and not installed directly?
Also, for me, please refrain from big caps in your post title when asking about such matters. Let's leave that for the folks with bricked phones, k?
While we are on the subject of etiquette, posting a bump less than 24 hours after your original post is a wee bit pushy. Especially when that bump doesn't say "Bump"
So hit me back with those links and I'll see if I can help you a bit.

Adding fonts into WinMo is much the same like WinPC. Just put it into \Windows\Fonts directory.
But on further reading and 2nd guessing what you are trying to say above, it appears that you want to be able use that installed font when the keyboard is activated. Is that correct ?
Isn't HTC IME keyboard already available in the HD2 ? Or are you looking for different language input ?
FYI, I had a bad experience with trying to add Traditional Chinese input capability when installing an extracted HTC Ezinput IME from another stock ROM. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611894&page=2
State clearly what you are trying to achieve so that others can help.

Actually, this forum is for people to help people. Voluntarily. As in, for free. When you ask someone for help, it is generally considered a good idea to adhere to certain protocols, such as being polite and thankful for what help you do receive.
Now, since you obviously are not interested in my help, I leave you to the graces of others. I am also adding you to my ignore list, since you decided to call me a "smartass". Good luck to you.
Zen, Thanks for the reply! When i connect my HD2 to the PC (running on Vista) i cant access ny Windows folder on the phone for some reason, so i cant add a font .. No, the HD2 does not come with the IME keyboard. I am just looking for a English version to download for a Windows device.. If i google it, everything comes up for a Droid.

Was you phone connected via ActiveSync or "Disk drive mode" ?
I can't remember off my head but one of them - I take my bet on ActiveSync - will make Windows folder inaccessible. You could have copy into "My Document", remove phone from PC and then move it again via File Explorer.
I still don't get the part about HTC IME that you don't have . What it the ROM version you have ? Go to Start > Settings > About Phone > Software Information. Post the info.
There is Swype, Finger keyboard in the forum. Search for it.
Gotta go offline 24-hr in the next 15 mins or so.

IME stands for Input Method Editor i.e. on-screen software keyboard.
I am using QQ pinyin input which allows me to input Traditional Chinese. The option to select HTC's default IME, which is called Ezinput, is still there. I do not see the need to use HTC IME since QQ pinyin input has all the capabilities and more. Since HTC IME is in the ROM, I can't remove it either without flashing a cooked ROM.
So how do you type/input text into any apps ?

You want something like in the screenshot.
That's the QQ input I talked about. No, I don't think it is suitable for you since you do not require chinese input.
Let me dig around. Just keep watching this post.

Yes sir, Exactly like that 1. How do i go out installing that?
Take a look and consider:
Fingerkeyboard2 v2.1 (freeware)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=501122
Resco keyboard (commercial)
http://www.resco.net/pocketpc/keyboard/indepth.asp
One thing, I wish to point out is that the version date seems to pre-date WM6.5 actual release. I came across one software which allows for Chinese input, released in May 09 but had read forum complaints about paid users who was not able to get it to work on WM6.5 and that software company acknowledged it. I finally settled on QQ input although it is still in beta which I normally would not even consider installing.
Perhaps try out Fingerkeyboard2 first since it is free and also, you can post questions if the need arises.

How about using the search function, looking at the stickys and using Google to find the answers to your questions? It gets a bit redundant replying to the same questions from lazy people that cannot be bothered to invest some time into the forum.
If you don't want to answer the question then perhaps you should save your time even more and not reply? I'm no stranger to forums, but I do find this one particularly hard to follow/read/search.
From what I understand of how search engines work (for example Google's pagerank system) the search results would be dramatically improved if people posted links to relevant pages. This would also be a much better use of time than repeatedly having a go at new visitors for not searching. The more places that point to the answers, the easier it is to find them.
Some people are also happy to reply, because they know the answer straight away and it will take 60 seconds to reply. I don't see that it hurts to ask, in the hope that it will avoid 30 minutes of searching, which of course, is probably going on at the same time. If you are looking for something, do you not ask around whist you look yourself?
Anyway, more constructively back to the original question... @curtismeulen
Basically the ROM is the operating system that your phone runs on. You can install apps on to your phone (which mostly come in .CAB files) and most ROM come with a load of apps preinstalled.
HTC make the standard ROM for the HD2, but also phone companies (O2, T-mobile, etc) make slightly customised versions for the phones they sell themselves, - for e.g. adding/removing particular apps, or a special startup screen or background image, etc. If you have one of these kind of ROMs then you can't install the HTC one without running special programs.
The third kind of ROMs are 'custom ROMs' made by experts who want to always have the cutting edge software, have the phoen set up exactly as they prefer and to improve on what HTC do. Again special programs are required to install these, and always when you install a new ROM there's the risk of something going wrong and your phone not working any more.
Here's some links to useful info:
The HD2/Leo page on this sites wiki:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Leo
a list of ROMs for the HD2 (though it's not quite up to date):
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Leo/ROMs
Stuff about installing different ROMs:
Changing "official ROMs" from one to another: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=591314
Installing any ROM you like: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=606713
Personally I use this ROM:
Artemis HD2 ROM Family Ver 15.5: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=612580
The instructions there are also quite useful to give you an idea of the differences between ROMs, etc.

Don't be obtuse, the stickys tell you everything you need to know with regards to ROMs and ROM flashing. Google search 'ps1 emulator for windows mobile' and FPSEce and a number of other emulators are listed in the first link.
It probably took him longer to register to ask the question than it would have done to research it for himself.

Actually, this forum is call xda "DEVELOPERS".... name clearly means it's full of developers.... not really a place for newbies. There are plenty of help forums out there. This forum is for the advanced user who wants to learn to hack and help develop. I didn't even post for the first year or 2 that I was a member... not until I felt comfortable with my knowledge. I used other help forums that are meant for newbie questions and just watched and learned from this forum.

Actually ROM is Read Only Memory
It has come to be used as short form for the coded OS that is used in the ROM and that specifically is the "ROM image" of the OS in use.
So any cooked (or otherwise) "ROM" we are talking about is not the same as the "ROM" within the device.
...and even though it's called read only memory, it can still be written to, otherwise we'd not be able to install different kinds of operating system, etc. So to me it's an arbitrary set of letters used to describe something that's vaguely relevant to the original usage of them!

You don't install anything to the ROM.
ROMs are flashable, which is different to installing things to. OSs are flashed, not installed, to devices.
The internal memory part of the device is different to the ROM, it is an 'open' writable section. It may well be on the same memory chip, but is different in terms of usage available to it.

And as a follow on from rp-x1 and also as a quick history lesson to you "youngsters" the correct term is actually "EPROM" chips (Electronically Programmable Read Only Memory) and when they were first used you couldn't write to them unless you had the appropriate equipment and that included UV "fixing ovens"!!!!!!
So, it's not an arbitrary set of letters, but, more a corruption of a very precise acronym which is now used in completely the wrong way.

For those who haven't bothered to read the READ THIS BEFORE POSTING announcement by mrvanx, I brought it to you:
A few things you should keep in mind before posting to XDA-Developers forums:
Check if your question has been asked before
Some questions just keep popping up over and over. Please use the 'search function' in the menu above each and every page in the forum. Try entering a few keywords to see if your question has been asked before. If it has, please read the topics and see if you can figure it our from there. You can also search inside a topic if it has too many comments by using the search function (CTRL+F) in your browser. If you don't find the answer, please post a comment to the relevant thread instead of starting a new one.RTFW, or Read the Wiki
Chances are your question is already answered on the wiki: Make sure you browse through the FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) before you start a new topic. If it's an obvious or common question, chances are someone has already put the answer there.ETFW, or Edit the Wiki
Information stored in the wiki is dynamic: The wiki makes it easy for anyone to contribute or edit pages, and link them together, it is the best way to keep all information current and accurate. If you ask something in the forum which you didn't find on the wiki previously, please take 5 minutes of your time to EDIT the wiki and add the information there when you get an answer. This is the only way to avoid tons of new threads asking the very same questions over and over and over again.
Don't be afraid of editing the wiki if you don't understand the wiki syntax: Formatting may seem a bit complicated at the beginning, but you don't have to care too much if you just want to add content, add it as if you were writing a text document and sure someone more experienced with wiki syntax will edit it after and correct the bad formatting mistakes.First time here?
If it's your first time here, we encourage you to read general FAQ's too, which is an extended version of what has already been said here.

Please consider a few guidelines before posting to the Desire Z Forum and Subfora!
(also applies to other Fora!)
As a rule of thumb, let’s try to maintain the following structure:
Desire Z General
(General talk. Post general issues related to Desire Z, software, skins, fixes, tips, tricks, etc.)
Desire Z Android development
(Specific talk. Post issues related to upgrading only, Utilities, Radios, unbricking, etc.)
Desire Z Themes and Apps
(Specific talk. Post issues related to themes only, software, applications, etc.)
Desire Z Accessories
(Specific talk. Post issues related to accessories only, SD Cards, headsets, remote, etc.)
Hello guys i have a question. I think my desire z's battery doesnt go so long. When i look what is using the battery it says display 40%. Why it is using so much? I first thought it might be because of the live wallpaper but although i changed, its still about 40%. Second question, is charging the phone from the computer bad for the phone? Thanks a lot...

Regarding the battery, it's normal for the battery life to start off a bit poor, and improve over time, as the phone "learns" the capacity of the battery. Check out this threads :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=844051
Some people have found greatly increased battery life from using the SetCPU app, try searching on that.
It's pretty normal for the screen to be a big consumer of the battery, just like it is on a computer laptop. You can try turning the brightness down to make a difference to this.
As for charging from the computer, I don't know, but I can't see a reason why it should be a bad thing to do. Sometimes the computer will deliver a slower charge than a mains charger (no idea if this is the case on the DZ or not), and in that case a slower charge is often better for a battery.
I got a few questions about this phone because I'm probably gonna buy it next week.
1: Does the phone have swype?
2: Do rooting methods for the G2 work for the Desire Z ? (and what can i do more?)
3: What is S-OFF ? (and what is radio s-off?)
4: What is this trackpad? (i'm coming from a Nokia N900, so it's a big change)
5: How good are the speakers for music playback?
Thanks.
Calendar question
I've got a calendar issue that I posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=844857
Basically, my calendar fails to load. I did some looking around, and I think the problem is here:
11-22 16:39:25.495 E/ActivityThread( 2253): Failed to find provider info for com.android.calendar
11-22 16:39:29.025 E/ActivityThread( 1724): Failed to find provider info for com.android.calendar
I then went into the Backup/Restore section of Titanium backup, and found that 'com.android.providers.calendar' has a line through it, as if it's been uninstalled. I never uninstalled or deleted it, so either the Chinese guys who tweaked the ROM (still basically sense, but with some extra crapware) screwed it up somehow, or one of their crapwares that I uninstalled was linked to it somehow.
My question is, is there a way for me to recompile that file, or do I need to get someone to extract it for me? If I need to push the file, where should I push it to? /system/app, or a more specific location?
Thanks.

A stock G2 runs a slightly different ROM/kernel than a stock DZ. So make sure you follow the correct rooting method for the correct phone/ROM/kernel that you have.

And there is no way I can add this with the rooting? I mean, you do ARE saying literally everything is possible with rooting

I can confirm you can install (and use) Swype (in my case the Beta version) on the DZ. I am not sure if you need to have root access to do so, since I only tried it when I had it rooted already ;-)

Welcome
Rooting your phone is kind of like jailbreaking, because it gives you access to the administrator's account on the phone (the "root" user), so gives you the ability to do more things that you'd be otherwise locked out of.
Overclocking your phone is running the CPU at a higher speed than normal - so it makes it faster, quite simply.
What is the difference between hboot S-OFF and radio S-OFF?
What phones have radio S-OFF?
I again have a question which shows I am a beginner When I open wifi hotspot will i be charged in any way ? For example when I connect to internet with wifi ?

I have some folders on the desktop, in which I added some app shortcuts. The last added shortcut is last in the list, it's not even ordered alphabetically. I want to change the order of the shortcuts without deleting the folder, re-creating and adding all shortcuts again. Is it possible?
Using standard folders from Sense.

That depends on your carrier. For example, with my carrier, Vodafone UK, any usage of the Internet (whether that's wi-fi from another computer connected via my phone, or direct from my phone) is going to count towards my monthly usage limit.
So it is using mobile network?

I come from a Windows Mobile background, so other more experienced Android users can correct me if I'm wrong...but rooting is pretty similar to jailbreaking the iPhone - it opens up the device beyond the lockdown of the manufacturer and the carrier, letting you basically have total control over what happens in your phone (eg: Superuser control).
UNLIKE jailbreaking the iPhone however, you can 'flash' other ROMs onto your device. Don't like HTC Sense? Flash a stock Android ROM. Don't like the performance? Flash a Cyanogen Mod (CM) ROM onto your device. Want HTC Sense? Flash a custom Sense-enabled ROM. This is possible due to the massive dev group and also the flexibility of the Android platform - iOS is designed by Apple to be used on only Apple devices, and is also designed to be locked down. Android is designed to be tinkered and customized.
Getting 'root' on your device allows you also to 'overclock' your phone - for example, the HTC Desire Z/G-2/Vision comes with it's CPU clocked in at 800MHz (or there abouts), by overclocking your device, you can tweak the CPU to run at 1Ghz, 1.4GHz or even up to 1.9GHz! So you can effectively more than double your CPU speed! This means that you can play games more smoothly, boot up faster, run apps more quickly, etc.
Be WARNED however, that incorrectly rooting and/or overclocking your phone may result in a 'bricked' device - this means that your device no longer switches on or cannot load any software/OS, resulting in your phone transforming into a very expensive paperweight or brick. If you follow the instructions correctly though, then there is no worries and you will have gained access to a whole new world.
Good luck!
A question of my own now - is it possible to 'exchange' the HTC Pre-cached maps? Or even flash one onto the phone? I live in Australia, but bought a euro device, meaning that I have a bunch of precached maps for countries that I will not be able to visit (for now because I am a poor student =P). Is this part of the ROM? And if so, can I somehow get the maps from the Australian Desire HD ROM (no Australian Desire Z as far as I know)?
Hi,I always use android via SD mode until yesterday, and I like the screen resolution very much. But after change to nand (ROM CWM 7 2.33) today, the resolution changed to smaller, any solutions? Seek your help pls! !!!

Yeah, what he said.
Use adb to edit /system/build.prop.
Change the number on ro.sf.lcd_density=NUMBER. I like 240.

or use root explorer to edit it, you can do it directly on your phone just reboot after that.
Yup, wrong forum, use common sense dude.
It has nothing to do with nand, you have just chosen a rom that uses a different res, do as described or use a app from Market like LCD Density and set to 240. Or try another rom.
