Messaging automatically changes to MMS after 480 characters(3 texts) limit? - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hey there, I've explored every setting available in a stock rom and I could not find the setting to change the "feature" of a text changing to a MMS automatically after 3 texts are inputted in a single message.
was wondering if there's any way to change it other than third party apps (i know handcent works)
thanks!

up.
Also looking for a solution, on the Iphone I could send thousands of characters in a single sms. Why the hell would they put a limit and not let me chose what I am sending ?

you can change this in the sms settings!!!

here every single sms cost 25 cent
so,
25*3=75
and the mms cost 50 cent n u can writ as much as u want on it smart droid lol

my carrier allowed me to send unlimited text so yeah lol

Well here it costs 9.9c per SMS, and 50c for a mms, so really it should be changing it after 5 messages.

Except that there are often plans where you get 1K free SMS, which does not include MMS...
0*3 = 0
1*50 = 50

Same here. I have unlimited txts but I'm paying for mms. Fortunately you can change that option in handcent sms

Change MMS Limit?

***I MEANT TO PUT SMS IN THE TITLE, NOT MMS***
I searched at work and I just searched again when I got home and I can't find anything. The registry edit a few people posted doesn't seem to help me. Unless i'm doing something wrong. You know how you can only type 160 characters in a text message? I want to increase that. I know it's possible and i'm almost positive I seen it before somewhere.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Are you talkin about SMS or MMS?
You can increase the limit of a sms.... But the recipient will receive 2 messages... And you'll pay for both, not only one.....
MMS limit is set about to 1000 characters....
I meant SMS, my bad. Just regular txt messages. So even if I change it on my end to be able to type more, the person receiving it will get 2 messages anyway?

Sure.....
If you write an sms up to 160 character, it will be splitted in 2 messages or more....
Erm. I'm confused now. So there's really no way to make a longer text message then? Anything below 160 will be 1 message and anything over that will be another message? I guess the person receiving the text can only receive so much any way.
there is no way to change the limit on the sms messages... it will get split due to carrier restrictions.. ( Short Messenger Service = short quick messages thats what its intended for )

Right....they will receive two texts but the second one will pick up right where the last one left off.
well i receive really long text messages from my girlfriend and another friend. one had a sidekick lx the other one a pearl. so is it just tmobile to tmobile you can send long messages and the the person gets as a long message. also how come mms downloading uses gprs instead of edge speed i probably wouldnt know the difference but just curious.

why not put the sms threader on you phone, and when you recieve long text msgs they will show as one long message on your phone!!!!!
i already get long text messages without it but when i send a long one only my girlfriends sidekick lx can get a real long message everyone else it breaks it down.

thats part of the sidekick software, but it still counts as a seperate message on her service, it just reads that way...
tell your friends to upgrade their phones if you want it to show in long messages on their part....
and if you friends wont change, change the friends around you !!!

sms to mms...

Seriously, this is getting beyond a joke. I thought this problem was solved back with the G1...
I can't believe that after all of this time there is no option to disable auto-mms conversion.
And before anyone comments: I have looked through google; It is NOT a problem with my network, or violation of any other UK network; I have sent much more than 3 or even 10 stringed sms's on winmo and iPhone OS. It is 100% Android, and I would like a fix without installing a new messaging client (nothing supports the N1's resolution).
To be honest, I wouldn't mind disabling outgoing mms since it's completely obsolete; I email something if I want to send a picture and I thought Android was made to promote data usage, not prehistoric phone methods.
If it's what it takes, I would disable it altogether.
On the odd occasion (like once or twice a year), I may receive an mms, but I have never, in my entire life sent an mms. What is Google's problem? Do they live in the 90's?
Have you tried removed the MMS setting from your APN in the settings?
Sounds like an advantage to me.. Nokias do that too if you type a message too long for SMS. What's the problem? Your message arrives at the other end correctly.

I removed the MMS settings and it hasn't said "converting to mms" after 3 sms's. I suppose that means it's working
Thanks.

Yeah but I have unlimited sms texts so MMS is automatically a minus for me.
replace the standard messaging app with handcent sms. it's probably my only must-have app on android and it has that option.

Resolution's too low i'm afraid.
I've only just got away from the iPhone messaging client
resolution of...the icon? everything else is properly done. but if that's your thing, then yeah, the icon looks slightly blurry. wait for an update in the market i guess.
Yeah all of the edges are pixelated.
And I want to get rid of the iPhone messaging client because with only using half of the screen, I don't get as much message on as when it uses the whole width.
I guess I'm a bit bored of the iPhone now and I'd like to mess around with android for a bit first.

Oh wait, it's converting to mms again ¬¬ and I've removed al of the settings for mms.

If i type longer than 3 smses it converts automatically to mms?!

Does anyone also have this problem?
Whenever I type a message that's longer than 3 smses, the phone automatically converts the sms into a mms message?
I just find it weird coz my old nokia phone can send up to 11 smses without converting to mms automatically.
Yeh, i tend to blab on in my messages =P
Any help would be appreciated!!!! THx!!!!
yeah.. it's meant to.. on the assumption that 1 mms is cheaper than 3 sms..... but you can switch it on/ off (in Handscent..) not sure about std msg app..
this unfortunately can't be changed in the default messaging app, but handcent does handle this well
ooo THX GUYS...awesome!!!! i'll try it out ^^

WHAT?! Seriously?! Goddammit. I can send 3000 sms' per month. And MMS' are pretty expensive in comparison. Urgh, this is VERY strange. Oh well, I guess it'll have to do. I really love the messaging app!
Edit: I tried Handcent. And it's really not for me. I think the standard messaging app looks way much better. Too bad since Handcent has some pretty good settings.

Receive >160 char SMS all at once

I'm not sure if this is an EVO issue or a Sprint issue as I've always used AT&T before.
Is there a reason I can only receive about 1 SMS per minute and multi-part sms show up in parts rather than as one long message? The default Messaging app and Handcent seem to operate the same.
Any insight?
Thanks
Sprint has limited the number of characters in their messages for some time now, but I usually get the other parts of messages back-to-back. Well, maybe it took another 20 seconds for the 2nd part to come in, but it hasn't taken a whole minute.
Go to the market and download ChompSMS. It gives you the option to either split up the texts or receive them all at once.
Whoa ChompSMS will do that!? Like it will wait for everything to come in, compile it in order, and spit it to you in one SMS? If thats true thats awesome. Some of my friends write novels from their iPhones like little girls. Ill get all 17 pages at random times in random order. Ugh.
Well you can send texts out that are more than 160 characters. I think that you can receive them all at one too
Better yet...send yourself a text using chomp and go past the 160 character limit. See if it splits it up or not.
Handcent does the same. It even gives you the option to customize how you want it split. Split by letter, by word, etc., etc.

Are you sure this effects receiving the message? I thought this only had to do with splitting the messages you are sending.
I hate when i get the second half of the message first.....Reply like ???? and then get the first half after i reply......
The person sending can also send them as a MMS (multi media message) which lets you do much more text.
i cant see the option to receive messages > 160 characters at once in chompSMS... I've looked everywhere

Have you received a text message that is more than 160 characters? I sent one to myself that was almost 300 and it all came in at one time. I then had a friend send me one, about the same size and it all came in one text...granted it was super long and took up the whole page.
What you could do is this -
SETTINGS > SMS NETWORK > MOBILE CARRIER SETTINGS > CDMA SPLIT
Make sure this is unchecked.
Reboot the phone and send yourself a >160 character text message and see what happens.

This didn't work for me. Can anybody else confirm this?
Well after updating ChompSMS last night, it seems that I cannot receive texts like I used to. I can still get more than 160 characters, but not like I did before.
Oh well...most people I SMS with don't have the ability to send really long text messages anyways. Hope you guys can find something useful.

sms to mms ?

hey guys,
im having a little problem, if im typing a long sms it auto changes it to a mms and for some reason which i cant workout why ?
can anybody shed any light on this
many thanks guys
it's does that to save you money - 1 mms costs less than 3 sms's.. which is fine unless you've got a ton of sms's in your contract and no mms's...
I don't think you can switch it just send 3 sms's in the options (but I know you CAN in Handscent)..
not if your sms is unlimited. Is it possible to completely disable this feature?
you didn't actually read my post did you..?
AFAIK you can't disable it on the stock Messaging app. You either gotta use some other app like Handcent, or just break your SMS's into 3 messages, and send it in several parts.
That doesn't make sense? When my sms is longer as 2sms, it just send a long sms. Not mms. I think depends on your network. In netherlands you can send a long sms to every phone that can recieve long sms...
