HTC Desire, stock rom, 2.2 official update, non-rooted, NL.
By the way, I tried to search "iPhone Voice Commands" just to know our competitor and got the result below in the picture!
Google cheated the search result?

Same here, and the same goes for chrome to phone on the Market.

But I keep getting a "Package file was not signed correctly."
Anyone happen to know why this is?

The voice update is in the market, and the Market itself has had an update. It now has search suggestions. And more cities & towns have been added to bye Sense weather locations.
They're all working hard recently

I used this to get by the installation unsuccessful problem common the CyanogenMod based roms.

I hv found it in the market, installed and it is working fine. (unrooted, unbranded Desire with froyo)
Chrome to phone is available only in some certain countries, check with google. That's why we cannot see it in the market.

I have this problem. But when I'm trying to do step 3:
adb shell rm -f /system/app/VoiceSearch.apk
I get this error:

I am using OpenDesire 3.1.0
What can I?

You need run the commands from recovery. I use the amonra recovery and mount /system then run the adb commands. I think you can also mount /system in clockwork recovery too.

Yep, mount system in Clockwork Recovery, connect to PC and using ADB do this:
adb remount
adb shell rm -f /system/app/VoiceSearch.apk
Reboot, reinstall off market. Launch voice search.
****IF YOU'RE NOT IN US, THEN YOU NEED TO PRESS MENU..SETTINGS...and select "US English" to get it to work. ****
Without this it'll only work with "map of", "navigate to" and "google search". With US language settings it'll do all the new funky functions.
question, does out keyboard (android keyboard) gets updated with this new voice input as well?

help - need googlesearch apk
I'm following this guide for my desire:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=10389
to getting the search button to work on my Desire.
Problem - if I go into ADB shell and I can "ls data", and see in there an app folder, but if I do "ls /data/app" is says "no such file or directory"?
Is this because I'm using app2sd and if so, why?
Can anyone post the com.android.googlequicksearch-1.apk file please, so I can manually copy it to the old system/app directory?
Related
I saw over in the Dream forums that they have Google Navigation working for the G1.
Was just wondering if anyone out there managed to get it to run on the Magic too? Or if not, has anyone been working on it / made any progress?
I tried to follow the G1 instructions but (predictably) it didnt work for the Magic.
I also tried and not surprisingly did not get it to work.
Which part failed? I was thinking of trying it but assumed I would have to pull my build prop file, compare it to the ones from the G1 thread, and make some changes.
adb shell rm /system/sd/app/*Maps*
adb shell rm /system/sd/app/*maps*
adb shell rm /system/sd/dalvik-cache/*Maps*
adb shell rm /system/sd/dalvik-cache/*maps*
adb shell rm /system/app/*Maps*
adb shell rm /system/app/*maps*
None of those files exist on the magic - i am assuming they are stored elsewhere?
also:
/system/packages.xml <-- does not exist on the magic
Result being that you cannot install the new maps.apk file
No dice for me either. I tried manually and the batch file. I'm sure it's those missing files. If someone had access to a G1 and copied them I'm sure it would work.
I also saw this earlier today and was thinking about testing it.

Probably - I did it on an AOSP rom and screwed up my radio. No idea why
I could not get it working on 32A MyHero because the app looks like it needs 1.6 to work.
Here are the steps to get it installed. Once it was installed it force-closed on launch.
I did this all from adb in recovery
if exists remove Maps.apk from /data/app/
if exists remove Maps.apk from /data/app_s/
if exists remove *maps* & *Maps* from /data/dalvik-cache/
Update build.prop and build.trout.prop
set ro.build.version.sdk=5
set ro.build.version.release=2.0
set ro.com.google.clientidbase=android-verizon
reboot
adb install path-to-Maps.apk (the one found in Dream forums)
I see the new Maps app name and icon, but it force closes (crashes) on launch.
Note: the MyHero rom just has a link from /system/app/ --> /data/app_s/
I imagine it should work on a 1.6 Donut ROM.
Note: You might have to revert the build.prop changes after you install Maps to support other applications.
I got a Market notification that the new Google Maps was avail, with the GPS turn-by-turn navigation. After downloading I get the message "Install Unsuccessful." I'm assuming this is because I am running Cyanogen's mod. Any workround? A straight APK hosted somewhere? Sorry to be a nub, do apps need to be ported/resigned to modded ROM's?
Have you got Android SDK installed? If so, you can use the famous "adb" tool to solve the problem. If your phone is rooted - and I assume it is, it takes only three commands. Connect your phone to your PC and from the command line interface issue the following commands:
adb remount
adb shell rm /system/app/Maps.apk
adb uninstall com.google.android.apps.maps
And then on your phone go to the Android market and install Google Maps again.
HTH,
@Pijar - Thanks for this quick and painless solution. Found it within seconds of starting my search and your answer was concise and accurate.

NOTE: This will only work inside the United States. If you live outside of the US, or even live inside and want Google Nav to work for you outside of the US, you need to install the tweaked version that works everywhere Google Maps works.
how the hell do I get this to work???
Am I supposed to use the windows command line? OR... is there a specific command line interface buried within the Android SDK tools?
Sorry if this sounds like a completely retarded question, but I have yet to really use the Android SDK and have no idea as to WTF i'm doing!! LOL!

rbrainard, yes, you should use your command line (cmd.exe) utility, if you are using Windows. I have not specified it, because I wanted the instruction to be universal (I personally work on Linux). So, after installing Android SDK, you should enter the command line, change directory to the directory where you installed the SDK, there you should enter the "tools" subdirectory, and there you will find the "adb" tool, which should let you execute the commands I specified in my post.
I do not think your remark to be "retarded" , just the opposite, sometimes "simple" answers are not that obvious to people who start to deal with some solutions - what I really find annoying are "use google" answers when sometimes it is not such a big deal to post the answer and it is not always so easy to find the correct solution while searching the net.
Thanks, just what I was looking for.

Makes absolutely perfect sense now. I followed your instructions to the "T" and after reboot, Google Maps was no longer in my list of programs.
I then went to the Market and proceeded to try and install the latest version and received the same error: "Installation Unsuccessful"...
UPDATE:
Today I get a different error: "Incompatible Upgrade".
Does anyone have a copy of the APK file for Google Maps?
Okay, nevermind... I have it fixed now.
Placed the Maps.APK in my C:\ directory
ADB Remount
ADB Push C:\Maps.apk /System/app
Viola!

A couple things to do after you get the Googlebits on:
Move su

#ls /system/bin/**to verify su copied**
#rm /system/xbin/su
Install busybox symlinks

change dir to androidsdk/tools
adb remount
adb push system/framework /system/framework
adb push system/etc/permissions /system/etc/permissions
adb push system/app /system/app

It may be something else I've broken (I've been tinkering), but is anyone getting gmail push with this build?
Mine seems to have stopped. I can check the mail manually, but nothing is getting pushed to me. Since this could be a Google issue, or something I've done, I'm looking for input before i troubleshoot.

I'm also having issues with new emails being pushed to my phone, but I have been tinkering with SU, so I also may have broke it. I have already installed this on another friend's Hero & I'm going to see if they are having the same issue.
UPDATE:
My friend has not been having an issues receiving new email or with the notifications, so something related to SU or busybox, is possibly causing the issue.

Thanks. I went the whole way back. RUU, rooted with 1.5.2 recovery, flashed quietcblongs 1.6 and copied over googlebits. I'll leave it for a while and verify sync works as expected.
I don't see how busyboxes symlinks or moving su could break it, but your research mirrors mine, so we will see what happens.
Sometime last evening Google syncing stopped again. I'm going to try some mixing and matching with the various 1.5 and 1.6 versions of googlebits.

ONLY WORKS WITH ANDROID 2.2 (FROYO)
For those of you that don't know, Google released a new Voice Search that allows "actions". For more info go Here.
First off, I wanna thank Tsenru, klinster, devlogic, BinaryMan, and Synchromatic @ the CM forum for all the info.
This is instructions for ubuntu so make the proper adjustments for windows if needed.
From ADB
Code:
adb pull /system/app ~/Desktop/app/
adb remount
adb shell rm -f /system/app/VoiceSearch.apk
adb shell pm uninstall com.google.android.voicesearch
adb shell rm -f /system/app/GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk
adb shell pm uninstall com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox
Once this is done you can search market for "voice search" and "google search" then after they're installed, reboot.
Now for the next step.
If the search hard key doesn't bring up the quick search box (keyboard input), do this.
Code:
adb remount
adb shell ln -s /data/app/com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox-1.apk /system/app/com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox.apk
adb reboot
Now all should work!
I had a wierd name for quick search box (com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox-1) so keep that in mind if you have any issues.
Now enjoy you fancy new voice search!
tried everyone's suggestions so far, with your suggestions I get:
rm failed for -f, Read-only file system
Worked for me, thanks!

Rather then using the command adb shell mv /data/app/com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox /system/app
I suggest the command ln -s /data/app/com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox-1.apk /system/app/com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox.apk
ln -s creates a symbolic link to the file rather then moving the file. It keeps the google search file where the installer put it. If you move the file are you causing an issue in the future when the next upgrade comes around?

You can make the system r/w.
Code:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblk3 /system
i know that's not the exact code but it works just fine for me.
