Having a stupid issue with X10 deleting my contacts all the time.
Have them backed up with sony's app, but irretating to have to do it 2 times a day or so.
Dunno what's causing it. Turned off google sync too.
....Bump....
Happened to me the first time I tried to use a google or sony sync, I just turned sync off and use a manual backup to sim card.
I only want a safe store for my contacts 'in the air' as it were that would be obtainable with a login and sync.
If someone could clearly explain the sync services and settings ( keeping, overwriting, deleting, from server) it would be helpfull.
I would always want my phone to be the master sync device and the service to sync to it unless I specify a reverse way so sync, or a 'run through contacts' service that gives options to keep or change details in contacts.
It's a true sync and can be difficult to get setup. If you delete contacts on phone googles dissappear and vice versa. Once you've done it the sync with google is seamless.
For a fresh start the best bet is to delete your phone contacts..then setup all your contacts manually or import them and edit in gmail, then export to a file so you have a backup if something goes wrong.
After that you would sync to google contacts and all should be well.
It always sync perfectly for me after going through and setting it all up this way initially. If I edit a contact on phone it updates on gmail like it should...and vice versa.
In settings for sync I put "My Contacts" as the only sync option, then in gmail you would mark the ones you want on phone as "My Contacts" as well. That way you don't have every email contact on your phone if you don't want too. If you want it all just select "All Contacts"

I have set ActiveSync (Exchange) to sync with my GMail account, and I'm positive I've ticked only the mail checkbox. Today, all out of sudden, it synced contacts too, so now I have a bunch of unwanted contacts, both on my GMail account, and on my phone, not to mention that contact pictures are messed too.
On Manila ActiveSync settings page, contacts checkbox is off but disabled (greyed out). On WM ActiveSync settings, contacts under Exchange are turned on.
This is not the first time it has happened to me. First time I thought it was my fault, but now I'm sure it's not. Has anyone had a similar problem, and knows the solution? The bug is really annoying.
Well, I didn' have the exact situtaion but something similar.... I use MS Myphone and ActiveSync to synch my Google contacts. Somehow, i ended up with duplicate contacts and some cases 3-4 copies. Here's what I did to resolve it:
*On the HD2, Delete the Activesync(exchange) account.
*On the HD2, Delete Myphone acct
*On the HD2, Delete the pim.vol file (located in root of the device). You can back this file up just incase.
*On my desktop, Go to my Google contacts online and hit the 'Find duplicate' button, deleted the duplicates
*On my desktop, sign into Myphone online account. Under contacts, hit 'Find Duplicates'. delete the duplicates thereafter.
*On HD2, create and configure Myphone and let it sync the contacts
*On HD2, create and configure ActiveSync exchange server to syn the contacts.
Hope this helps somehow...Good luck!
Thanks for your reply, but it doesn't quite solve the bug, just cleans the mess up. I want to avoid it happening in the first place.
Noone with similar problems?
Just a word of warning - don't sync your calendar with GMail if you've already got a bunch of accepted appointments in your phone.
GMail will send a brand new meeting request to everyone on the original recipients list, even for old appointments!
Happened to me when I backed up my phone, flashed new ROM, restored contacts, appointments, etc and then synced to GMail.
My entire office got spammed with meeting requests for old things like the 2009 company Christmas party!
Oh, and I also had the issue where all my contact pictures were very low quality.
See my post here:

I'm not sure if your problem is same as mine. Did you personally checked to sync calendar items and contacts? I select mail only, but calendar and contacts get auto-check without my permission...
Hi guys, Just wondering if anyone facing problems with google contacts syncing?
I tried to do syncing but nothing goes to and fro.. My Gmail contacts stay the same, so does my phones one. Anyone got a solution to this?
I had the same issue last time.
now the problem solved (by itself) as all my Android contact is sync to my Gmail.
I did two things, but I am not sure which one actually makes it work
First:
I sign in to HTC Sense (and I supposed my Android contact is sync to HTC).
Second:
I used myBackup (can be found on the Market).
Then, I flash a new android (so I re-signin to HTC on first Android boot and re-install myBackup). It turns up that I got duplicated contacts (one set from Gmail, one set restored to my phone).
So, I flash again (by deleting the old android folder and replace with a new one). This time, I just sign in to Google and it syncs perfectly ever after^^
Silly question.. but how to sign in HTC sense? i don't see any accounts for HTC sense under my account section.
Lemme try out the mybackup tool then. thanks a lot!
I had a problem with my google contacts showing 3 of evrey contact. You can go to google.com on your computer. Log in with the account you use on your phone. Then click ADD STUFF search for google contacts and add it then edit the contacts how you like them after that go to Accounts and Sync on your phone and delete the google account then click add new account. Add your account back and it will sync with the contacts you saved on the computer
finally got it working.
i realized that if you use any 3rd party contact import (sprite migrate, or mybackup) it seems to screw up the syncing.
So in the end all i used was Export to SD card then import back again after a fresh install.
Not working on Motorola Droid Global too
I hade to use motorola Messaging application (with "Universal Inbox"):
Messaging -> press: Menu -> Manage accounts -> click: [email protected] -> pick one from:
Sync Contacts
Sync Gmail
Sync Calendar.
On Contacts-> press: Menu -> Backup Assistant
I have waited for 3-4minuts with "Communicating with server. Please wait"
then finished with error:
"Network unavailable.
Please contact Verizon customer support for assistance *611"
Hi,
Im new to this and installed Android on my HD2 for the first time yesterday, I have to say I am really liking it and thank you to MDJ and all others for there hard work and who have put up all the info needed to do this.
I have searched on here but cannot find an answer. When i come to change the ROM how do i back up all my contacts so that I dont have to spend ages re-entering them.
Please help.......
Contacts are stored in your google account that you registered on the phone when you first ran Android. Next time you run a new build it automatically gets your contacts when you add your google account again.
If you're not sure if you're storing your contacts on your google account, open the menu and go settings, accounts & sync, select your google account and make sure contacts is ticked.
I didn't like the idea of associating an email account with a phone at first, but after trying lots of different builds I think it's a brilliant idea!
Thank you for the reply. Checked it and its ticked. Wasnt sure whether it would work though as when i log into my google account on the PC there are no contacts there.
That sounds wrong then, as I see my contacts in Google mail on my PC.
Sent from my HD2 using XDA App
Make sure, that when your contact are on the phone, you actually go to settings --> accounts and sync, and tap the 'sync contacts' option once for Google Accounts.
If you do not do that, no way your contacts will be synced to your gmail account on the PC
I found that out the hard way when i started to use Android and had to manually add all contacts again
The non-googlemail method!
I personally don't like to use googlemail to keep my contacts safe.
So what I do is simply go into my phone book in abndroid, 'export' the 'PHONE' contacts to SD card. It will save the file 'pcsc_pcsc_00001' which can be copied to your PC whilst you conduct a reinstall. Once reinstalled copy over the pcsc_pcsc_00001 file back onto your SD card (root folder) and go to your phone book where you can 'IMPORT from SD Card'.
This way you can keep it away from the annoying googlemail which will dramatically reduce the quality of your avatars for your contacts.
When I try to select the contacts for my phone I only have "all contacts" offered for my gmail active sync connection. I don't want to sync all contacts but just one category which I have set up especially for my phone's phone book.
Is there any way to facilitate this?
My current workaround is: sync contacts with google sync instead of active sync. Then I can select exactly the category I want to "see". This way I have to live without "push" though - which I don't really like.
Not sure if this is a lollipop issue, or if I just did not notice it in kit-kat, but, I went to create a contact on my phone the other day, and I always save them to my google account. When I saved the contact, It did not show up on the google web site as I expected it to. So I started to trouble shoot, and found the contact was saved to my phone. OK I did a factory reset on my phone shortly after the OTA upgrade, at which point i forgot to set my google account as the default to save contacts. Upon going to the contacts settings, under accounts, there is no google option. If i hit add I get Facebook, Exchange, or LDAP, no google option. If I got to the phone settings, goto accounts, google, and click my google account, there is no option to Synd Contacts, just sync people data??? Also if I go to my contacts app, create a new contact and change were it saves to, I only have Phone and Exchange Active Sync as options. What happen to saving to Google, am i missing something?? Anythoughts ??
