after getting it running on my laptop, i didn't bother to use it to connect to the web - had pdanet and it worked, so i figured i'd leave well enough alone
figuring if samsung does release a OTA update, i'd need it so i tried it tonite, and it was noticeably faster - enough so that i did a speedtest.net (1.31 Mbps), disconnected, re-opened pdanet, speedtest'd at 1.1 Mbps, which is what i've been seeing the past few days, went back to Kies and it came in at 1.34
but the browsing speeds seem faster than the 2 Mbps mathematical difference

I installed a speed check app from the market and tried it out on my G1. Even when I'm sitting right next to my wireless router (WRT-54g, running DD-WRT), the download speed only goes up to about 2300 kbps.
A similar test connecting to the same server on my laptop shows speeds of around 4-6 Mbps.
Is this normal or is something amiss?
Didnt you make a thread like this already?
Anywho, a phone cant have the same speed as a laptop chip set.For example my card is intel 4965 or something like that, it has B/G/N so it has better range, speed which would explain why its faster than the generic Cheap chip set found in your G1. Maybe there's a limit on that G1 that stops it from accepting certain speeds or something, 3G is 7.2MB HSPDA blah blah blah, i think your speed is normal i don't use wifi since battery life is short.
The G1 supports Wireless b/g
Wireless g can transfer at speeds up to 54Mbits/s or 6.75MBytes/s
Realistically Wireless g transfers at speeds of about 2-3MBytes/s
Wireless N...
wait...
you have a WRT-54G which doesnt support N...
hmmm
Well
The G1 runs at a mere 528MHz and your Laptop probably runs at 2GHz
So theres a lot more processing power to process all the data going to the Wifi AP
Even if you... somehow... get a gigabit ethernet port running on the G1 it will be much slower than having a gigabit ethernet port running on a laptop. The G1's CPU just cannot take that load
Also the program you're running on the G1 would be running in a Virtual machine.
Running software in a VM is much slower than running software natively
Are those numbers kbits or kbytes, Mbits or Mbytes per sec?
Unfortunately this behavior is normal. The G1 has inherent "slow" issues concerning data. If you check, you will also notice that the latency is 80 to 200 times greater on the G1 than your laptop on the same wifi as well...
I noticed this during my first week of using the G1. I had hoped that it would have been fixed with an update (Cupcake, Donut, etc) but it has not been fixed so far. I have done a lot of testing, and I don't think that it has anything to do with the processor. I think it is a network stack buffer issue, or possibly a driver issue. I have raised a thread or two about this on the official T-Mobile forums about a year ago, but no one seems to know anything about it so far.
Hi there, I got a Magic (32A) with FroyoRedux, SPL 1.33.0010 and Radio 3.22.20.17. Everything works perfect, except for one thing: the WiFi speed. At july, I was visiting my parents in other city, I also updated my ROM while I was there. At my parents' house, with WiFi connected to a 8mbps internet connection, I got full speed (tested using speedtest.net app). About 3 or 4 weeks ago, when I got home, also via speedtest.net app, I got a fair speed (3mbps) via WiFi. I have 15mbps at home, but I though it was OK, since its fast enough for most applications I use. But, since then, my WiFi speed is limited to a extremely slow rate, always slower than my 3G speed. I have 600kbps at 3G, and I get, in the best results, 500kbps via WiFi (most of the times, it gets between 100 and 200kbps), even without any other device connected to my router. I tried using static IP, no success (actually, I was unable to connect while using static IP, even with all the settings done correctly). Using an app called WiFi analyzer, I can see that no network next to my house is using the same channel as my router does, so channel interference is also not the problem. I know a setting in HTC WinMo devices which let the user to choose between better wifi performance or better battery life, but I was unable to find such settings in Android.
So, I'd like to know if it is a known issue, or if someone out there has the same problems as me. I've seen many Droid and Hero owners having similar issues, but nobody with a Magic.
And sorry for any typos I may have commited, my english is not that good, I'm brazilian
I find myself in a decent 4g area, with nothing to do, so I decided to see if there was any reason to run PDA.net (which I paid for a while ago) now that I am on CM7.
My phone was connected to 4G, and the same USB spot on my laptop. I even rested on my table at the exact same spot for each test. I used Speedtest.net to hit the nearest server. I ran 6 tests first wirelessly tethered, then through PDAnet tether, then wired CM7 tether. Then I ran two tests each back through the list, to make sure time was not a factor on the speeds, then one test each again.
Here are my results, tossing out the highest and lowest test for each one. Upload appeared to be capped, as on many tests it would be climbing high and then hover right around 1mbit.
CM7 Wireless: Ping = 95.67; DL = 3.77 mbit; UL = 1.05 mbit
PDAnet: Ping = 98; DL = 4.40 mbit; UL = 1.07 mbit
CM7 Wired: Ping = 96.14; DL = 6.19 mbit; UL = 1.00 mbit
Conclusion: For some reason, wired CM7 crushed the other two on download. Even when going back and forth between tethering methods, CM7 Wired produced better results. In fact, after all the tests, even the lowest outlier for CM7 Wired (5.17mbit) was higher than every other test for the other two methods. Upload as I said appeared to be capped, and have negligible difference. Ping as well seemed to be within error for all three methods, though the lowest I recorded (83) was on CM7 wired.
Thats it, thought I might share, and hope that someone else has done their own experiments. If so, what did you find?
Nice work. Makes me wish even more than I was in a 4g area so I could tether and get rid of Comcast... but then I wouldn't be able to use my phone and computer online separately.

You can use both when you tether. It just is using the same stream of bits, so you cant do intensive stuffs on both.

I tether 4g for my internet connection. I also share the tether to my 360 so I can play xbox live. I can take a phone call, play words with friends, and load a web page on my pc, all while in a game of halo or CoD.
This phone is just awesome.
-Just warming up!
I am running a wireless-N modem/router and my laptop downloads at around 10-12 Mbps and a ping of 45 when testing thru speedtest.net
Doing the same on the tablet I get a d/l of 1.4Mbps and a ping of 150.
Is this normal?
Thanks.
Shouldn't be. I often get the same results from my computer and my a500. Wireless problems with this tablet is fairly well documented though. Some seem to have problems some don't. Does the speed on your tablet change if you move to a different location, say closer of further from your router? Also what version of honeycomb are you using? I know 3.1 caused some issues for me, and I heard some people complaining on 3.2
No it doesn't vary with location. I am running 3.2
Have you tried on an a different wifi router? Starbucks? McDonalds, a mate? work?
If you can replicate the problem there, it's most probably your tablet. If not then its's got something to do with the router...
US996 unlocked using OEM site. Phone is rooted. I am running the stock Oct. 1 2016 US99610d Build number deODEXd firmware. I am using Verizon wireless and Verizon FiOS which I recently upgraded from 75/75 to gigabit. At 75/75 my wifi speeds on my V20 were consistently 85/90 D/U with 9 or 10 ms ping using the OOKLA speed test. With my gigabit FiOS I have seen V20 speeds as high as 435/305 but no more. My FiOS desktop PC speed test using the Verizon gigabit speed test consistently shows 949/934 for router and 924/952 for device (PC). My V20 with the OOKLA test however will usually show something like 5 ms ping and 85/110. If I delete the OOKLA app, go into recovery and wipe Dalvic/ART Cache and Cache, then reboot and download the OOKLA speed test and run it I get the Very high 400/300 speeds UNTIL I get out of the app, then rerun it and get the old 85/110 speeds. The WiFi connection on the phone always shows 866 Mbps link speed. All OOKLA tests are from the same OOKLA site. I can tell if the phone on WiFi is in fast mode or slow mode by download speeds in general. I am frustrated trying to figure out what is preventing consistent high WiFi speed (all quoted speeds are from a distance of about 3 feet from the router. Does anyone know what the problem is? Thanks.
