Well supposedly AT&T is rolling out a software fix to fix upload speeds.
Funny thing is... for a few days my upload speed was fixed.
Now all of a sudden I can't break 200kbit up again.
But iPhone4 users around me can hit 1.4Mbit up all day long.
For those of you that can not hit HSUPA speeds, I wonder if you have iPhone4 friends you can check with.
If AT&T is indeed disabling HSUPA by device or IMEI, then I want to know about it.
It seems they gimped the Captivate so it couldn't do HSUPA (read the forum) so why not screw the Nexus One users too.
I know some of you will post that your HSUPA speeds are great, but you are people that are probably not served by Lucent equipment.
If you did have upload issues, and they are now fixed, I'de like to hear about that too, maybe AT&T is doing something else funky on a per market basis where it's prioritizing crying iPhone users where it doesn't have enough HSUPA capacity or something.
EDIT: My location is Salt Lake City
-James
i suggest you also post your location as well so it ads the detail necessary to make a conclusion. of course my speeds are fine here in socal with a nexus one. no cap or upload limitation or anything yet.
Location is Salt Lake City
I test all the time with a friend of mine, we generally have the same results.
louisiana, att 3g.
Yesterday here at work in Central KY I was seeing 2/.2 mbit in Speedtest, today I'm getting 2.2/1mbit.
What's odd is 2-3 days ago, I was seeing the typical HSUPA speed but yesterday was horribly slow. Only reason I really noticed was because I was messing with wifi sharing and seeing how fast it was. Heh, just did wifi sharing, 3.7/1.2.
I've done it several times, uplink still seems weird.. One time it'll hover around .5mbit, then jump up to 1.2 for a few seconds, then back to .5. Next time I ran it it stayed at 1.2 the whole time. Next time .5 the whole time.
100% sure I'm not jumping towers, mine is very close to work. However, there's lots of folks on AT&T here at work so never know what the utilization of the tower is.
To be fair, I have to say that all of a sudden, I just posted 1405kbit up... But I doubt it will last. I would hope that whatever fix is happening will be for all users, but I am still doubting AT&T sincerity.
But I still think it's a valid question... are these AT&T upgrades targeted to fix certain devices in waves? Are others, like iPhone 4's being prioritized?
Seems weird that my phone won't break 200k, when an iPhone 4 will still break 1mbit all day long.
Could there still be prioritization going on based on device? Like say iPhone users made the news so they are getting bandwidth priority?
-James
I'm not certain why, but I've been getting abysmal upload speeds for the past few days.
I'm located near Milwaukee, WI. Last few speed tests averaged out to 1.6mbs/.34mbs.

You could just be a victum of the HSUPA bug that AT&T claims they are in the process of fixing.
Are their any iPhone4 users around you having the same difficulty?
-James
Realistically, the only device that truly needs that fast HSUPA on at&t's network is the iPhone 4. The reason I say that is, it's currently their only device with video calling where that upload will really make a difference (besides data sticks and netbooks of course). Maybe they are randomly capping other devices uplink speed.

Well that's certainly one way to look at it but consider something else.
iPhone 4 users, and all other smartphone users who pay that $30, or $25, or $15... would then not be treated fairly.
Why do I get less service for paying the same $30/month the iPhone4 user pays?
This is blatantly wrong in my opinion. I'm paying for a service the same as iPhone4 users. In fact it's suppose to be the same service, that's why I started this thread in the first place.
There are apps like Fring on the Android Market that can make use of that higher upload speed, and let's not forget that the iPhone can't make Face Time calls over 3G as of yet unless it's jail-broken.
Now if it was clearly advertised that as an iPhone4 users you were going to receive preference, then I would have had a fair chance to make the decision as to which device would provide me the best upload, all the while paying the same $30 per month.
I don't think AT&T deserves to be allowed be deceptive in such a way.
Don't you want your service you're paying for?
In fact look at AT&T's website... it clearly states...
"typical upload speeds of 500 Kbps to 1.2 Mbps on compatible devices for our current 3G network*"
and...
"*Referenced speeds require an HSDPA 3.6Mbps/HSUPA capable device with Receive Diversity and/or Equalizer. AT&T is deploying HSUPA throughout the 3G footprint, HSUPA may not currently be available in all 3G areas."
It doesn't say... "Only for special people who worship Steve Jobs", it says for HSUPA capable devices.

I highly doubt they are capping anything.
The video calling on the iPhone is WiFi only unless you jailbreak.
That said, I've been having the same issue. In fact, I went to return my wife's Aria because she wants to see if a high end phone comes for AT&T and while there, the sales guy saw my Nexus One and we talked about it. He said if I gave him my IMEI it would communicate better with the cell towers. My phone was fine but I figured what the hell, let's try it. And **** has been unstable ever since. I do speedtest and I get 64kbps down, 1.6megs up. Or they're both under 200kbits. It's driving me crazy. I work in downtown Chicago and it's pissing me off because I'm the IT Manager for my company and I need to get emails immediately. I've come back from lunch to find out **** happened in the office but my phone's data was so slow that it couldn't sync emails.

I'm not 100% they are capping anything, but I'm putting out my observations and seeing what others experiences are.
AT&T has my IMEI number and as of this afternoon my upload has stabalized over 1mbit.
I would like this to be for all N1 users of course. Sure is wierd that my iPhone friends saw the improvement before I did.

I have been experiencing strange behavior as well where I am getting 1.6 (or a bit less) up and half the speed down.
Hopefully it's a symptom of implementing a fix and not a permanent situation.
EDIT: my download is highly irregular so I don't think it proves much.

Also ATT doesn't have my IMEI.

I have never had good luck with xtremelabs.
Speedtest.net usually provides more consistent results.
The company that provides it has a pretty large network for speed testing. The FCC speedtest app is provided by them, for what it's worth.

I got my Nexus One AT&T last week and promptly moved my Sim from my rooted Rogers G1 into the Nexus One.
My GF now has the rooted rogers G1 with the dumb-phone data plan. This is the one that costs $15 for dumb phones and $10 if you have a family plan.
I was forced to move my N1 to the $30 data plan because I was having some service issues and they re-activated my sim.
So here's where it gets interesting. I wanted to see if the N1 really did have worse reception than the G1 (which appears it doesn't). I installed the speedtest.net app on both phones.
So, I've got the latest CyanogenMod for N1, and she's got the latest for G1.
Her speeds would not go over 384kbit (or so) up or down, no matter what. The N1 on the $30 plan can consistently best 2Mbit right next to the G1
Keep in mind that this is the G1 from Canada that is compatible with AT&T 3G. Previously, the G1 never had an issue going over 1.5Mbit. I hadn't tested the G1's speed since last year.
I've test it again and again, and it appears that while some may be excited they can be grandfathered AT&T cheap data plan, AT&T they got wise and started throttling the bandwidth.
One caveat, is this may not be in all markets. This was tested in the Salt Lake City market.
I assume this will eventually be in all markets if not already.
Let the conspiracy begin.
-James
Interesting. I'll have to test my Telus Hero and see what I can get out of it.
Switch sim cards and try it again. I doubt it's AT&T; probably the G1 isn't doing HSDPA for some reason.

I will switch when I get home. Sure will be interesting if the N1 suddenly caps.
I was hoping someone else could test this.
I'm also going to say that I doubt this is the case.
The G1 probably has HSDPA disabled. 384kbps is the theoretical max for UMTS (with no HSDPA) so that would make sense...

I'm in Austin, TX and I have an N1 on AT&T's $15 dumbphone data plan. I just ran 4 tests in rush hour getting 300-900 kbit down and 700-900 kbit up. Late last night I was getting closer to 2 Mbit down.
IIRC, the G1 only supports UMTS and not HSDPA, versus the 7.2mb HSDPA in the Nexus One. I don't think it's AT&T at all.

No this is not so. I use to be over a megabit repeatedly on this G1. Also Cyanogen's roms modified the build.prop for the phones radio settings to enable 7.2MBit (i.e. Category 6 HSDPA)

not possible.
First, I'm getting over a meg and a half with mine.
Second, that's the same plan that people are using for streaming videos, music, TV, etc. 384k couldn't handle it.
-Mc
Just got the Nexus One a few days ago on ATT
I did a speed test with the stock rom and got about 1.5mbps down
Yesterday I flashed to Cyanogen 5.0.5.3. I don't get the 3G icon anymore and now get the "H"
I did a speed test and would consistently get 350ish
But even when the severe drop in speed all of a sudden, I watch youtube videos in high quality with barely any buffering and download things extremely fast. So I don't think the speed test is reliable or the new rom has had some kind of wierd effect
N1 does have some RF problems. It consistently scores lower than my Milestone in speedtests. Where reception is great though, it'll shine.

False alarm.
I don't know what the hell was going on, but I retested the Rogers G1 and was hitting 1.5mbit.
I can't explain why it did it that one day, I haven't changed anything.
Maybe it's a sign of things to come but for now, the dumb-phone plan is back to full speed.

Why are you complaining about the "dumb phone plan"? It's $15 - $20 cheaper. And, as you discovered, it was a false alarm...
I mean, if they were to restrict it, then yeah, I'd be pretty pissed, and force it over to a SmartPhone data plan. But oh well, it's not. I am in Indianapolis and tested the Chicago, IL server and got 2.5 down and 1.2 up. I've noticed a lot of these servers on the speed test program and ****. They don't work very well half the time, and they are all slow as hell. So maybe that's what was wrong with yours.

For the sake of the thread, I thought it relevant to mention I'm on the $10 family data plan with smartphone exclusion and typically get 3mbps down.
Hopefully this isn't off topic.
What to look for if you still don't have it in your area:
Have had some issues the last few weeks with tmobile and noticed "funny" things like certain areas not having 3g but full edge when I knew they were capable of it. Most of the time this happened around 2am or later. Anyway I now can say without a doubt that HSDPA+ is in central Florida or in the process of being rolled out. Other odd issues I noticed was
Consistent min speed of 2.3mbit when before it was 500kbit min. Highest I got so far in my apartment which is a 3-4 bar area was 5.5mbit. Highest before was 1.5 and in a very strong 4 bar area close by 1.8 max. Upload still leaves *ALOT* to be desired with .23 to -.4 mbps upload. They seem to be using similiar technology to the burst seen on cable modems, ie road runner will give you 20mbit for their "turbo" with "bursts" up to 30mbit. This could also just be how hsdpa works anyway to make sure there aren't alot of re-requests for data due to a bad signal but it definately starts off around 300-500kbit and bursts up after 1-4 seconds to the faster speed.
Either way perfect timing tmobile.
I hope that's true. I've been having alot of 3g outtages lately.

I'm almost certain it is. I just called last night to complain about it because I was staying at my parents house sitting and it happened up there too, as well as by my girlfriend's house about 10 minutes down the road from my apartment.
I'm really bothered though by the upload speeds.. but i guess its whatever. It's either my area, or tmobile in general.. I've had a couple of swaps with the same issue so its not the phone.

More than anything its the wireless spectrum they use and the fact that you're in a large buildling. Depending on the frequency your provider uses you'll have better luck than some indoors.. generally its all the same. Of course the number of towers is important too. But for example LTE on 700mhz will give verizon LTE speeds 8-10 miles from the tower, 2500mhz on wimax will give sprint 2-3 miles from the tower. Higher frequency means more bandwidth available however.
I'm in engineering at UCF and pretty good reception in HEC and engineering 1 as long as you're not in the inner part of the building and those hallways and labs you're good. Brick walls = signal drop with anything but the lower frequencies and a well covered area. It's pretty strong coverage over here though on this side of campus.
They do have paint and stuff that have metal in it I think because its illegal to have a device that emits a radio signal to jam cellphones, however blocking it with shielding isn't. I'm pretty certain its expensive though. This was years ago that I saw that link on it... don't know if it still exists.
How big of a swath is it being rolled out to do you think? I am in Deltona and nothing has changed as of yet. I assume your talking about the Orlando metro area...
I am using the FRF50 radio by the way.
yeah you will get a increase in speeds due to the extra bandwith, but don't expect to get past the 7.2 mark, hell don't even expect to hit the 7.2 mark due to all the other factors.
not many devices out there to take full advantage of the added speed. new blackberry bold does........not sure what else, even the *cough* iphone 4 doesn't

ATT is only going to 7.1 HSDPA... at least offically announced as of a month ago.. I guess that could change.. They're doing LTE after that.
Re 3g in O-Town.
I have had full 3g bars when I visit my younger brother around Alfaya and UCF.
As far as off-topicness goes I do think XDA is large enough to need carrier forums..
But yes, 3G/2G switching where it previously wasn't, weak 3G, no 3G, 3G not working, are all signs that 3G is being worked on for HSPA+ which includes going from T1's to fiber backhaul
My sig shows what I get with my slow G1. This is in a high traffic area, where before it was .10Mbps during the same time, yes.. that slow and congested.
Also if you're not getting HSUPA you need to make sure your Nexus One has it enabled. Stock roms do have HSUPA enabled, some custom ones don't.

Cool. I was discouraged back in January when they supposedly flipped the switch to HSDPA. As it turned out the backhaul wasn't here to support it. The max down I can remember is right at 1Mbps. Most of the time its around 900Kbps. Uploads usually come in around 350Kbps, with 500 being the highest I've seen. I live in Deltona, but work in Lake Mary and the speeds have been similar in both locations.
I hope that with this rollout everything will be in place.
HSDPA was already active on the network. The most they did was enable HSUPA.

You can be right about that, but I think it's mostly older buildings to blame and not the fact that they did it on purpose to block cell phone usage. Classroom Building 1 has horrible reception and around it too. At my job (in Millican Hall) the reception is horrible at my coworkers office (but it could be because the office is near a lot of beams). So structure is sometimes the cause.
I also get almost no reception in my cousin's house. She lives a little bit past Pegasus Pointe.

I use to get approximately the same speed at my apartment.. with a place I work on campus getting 1.8mbps down and .3-.5 mbps up and that was the best speed I've gotten around here. Its alot better now.. i'm sure they're still tweaking it.. I hope they are with the upload speeds.. its choppy and inconsitant.. sometimes just stops. Download did that a couple times too but that's probably related to the terrible upload (downloading needs upload to request the next bits of data to be sent.. it sends "acks" to acknowledge that the packet of data was sent properly). It's just really bad sometimes around UCF where it refuses to send a text, make a phone call, or go online as it just has that stuck up arrow thing. Really annoying.
I called tmobile to complain about the upload speeds and I guess they didn't want to fill a report out. Also HSDPA+ is only in Philly and there is no way I could get it in this area they claim.. gave me a hard time about things. So I asked what the max speeds I should be getting and I said well I'm getting much faster than that.. why is that? I think its cause I called twice recently and they already filled out one for each occasion. I had to really be forceful about them filling one out for me.. with the original person one not filling it out and then transferring me to pda support and then he didn't want to either. Both said they couldn't select nexus one as a phone when reporting a service issue and the second guy just decided to bull**** me off the phone the whole time after finally admitting that. I said bull cause I just had two filled out previously... they just kept discounting what I was saying.
Reposted on AC also, trying to get as many peoples input as possible!
Going to start of by saying this isnt a slam against Sprint. I was happy as hell to go back to them after having ATT with my iPhone. This post is to get a general feel for the speeds people are experiencing.
Sum it up as short as I can, I wanted to watch the Seahawks playoff game tonight, so I fired up the ole Slingplayer. To my disappointment, it looked like complete crap and was literally freezing up. So I decided to run a speedtest to see what kind of up/down speeds I was getting.
This is where it gets crappy. I had a friend with a DroidX on Verizon, and another friend with the Samsung Galaxy phone from AT&T next to me, and asked them to run a test also. Speeds were as follows
Verizon- 2.1mb down 950 up
AT&T- 2.3mb down 650 up
Sprint - 393kbps 655kbps up
Uh...yeah. So I ran it again,186kbps down 397 up...WTH
I know Sprint isnt exactly the best carrier and all (and yes I do still love em for the prices) but is the network THAT crappy?
Alittle info about my phone is this:
Android 2.2

I have tried to update my radios with the combo pack at first, but the radio itself stalled at Formatting Cache, so i tried to use them seperately, and once again, stalled at formatting. Everytime I try to update my radio (to actually have it run the full course), it stalls at the formatting part after the self reboot. I thought I would give it time, but 10min of sitting on that screen and nothing, I manually reboot and manually format cache thru recovery. I also updated my profiles each time I try to reinstall the radios.
Am I missing something here or doing something wrong? I know about tower signals and all, but since the area I live and work will NOT be getting 4G anytime soon (as its outside Milwaukee and 4G will not reach that far when and IF Milwaukee gets it), I would at least expect my 3G service to be better than that!
Don't feel so bad. I live in Milwaukee and...
About a year and half ago I could consistently hit 2 mbps on my Touch Pro / Diamond. Then a few months later I was down to about 1500 kbps, which was more then fine. About 6 months ago me and a friend (different plans etc) both started experiencing close to 400 kbps. On our TP2's. It has gotten much worse. I have an EvO, he has a TP2 still so it is not phone related. There are days I can't get above 47 kbps. Most of the time I seem to hover around 87-187 kbps. I have literally waited 2 minutes for webpages to load. And this has been going on for about the past 2 months. Numerous calls and troubleshooting has lead me to believe sprints network is just way to overloaded. I am about to leave Sprint and grab some t mobile and HSPDA+ love. I give till March 31st, only because someone I know claims Sprint 4G may become active here. Apparently there is already a network in place and it is a licensing issue. I doubt it is true, but that is how long I give sprint to get their network together.
Regrettably T Mobile isnt an option for me since I live out in the Falls. I have a store about a 5 min walk from me and the sales reps told me not to even bother about a year or so ago lol.
Even walking thru malls when those sales people approach me, all I say is I live in Meno Falls, and they stop the sales pitch lol
The formatting cache screen is normal, it should do that. It doesn't mean it froze. Just click reboot and you're good to go.
To the OP, your speeds are indicative of 3g (or less) speeds. Was the phone in 4g mode when you ran the test?
Sadly, sprint and verizon 4g technology is not compatible, otherwise swapping out to a verizon prl might be the trick.
Come to think of it, there was another thread here regarding using verizon's 3g even in areas where sprint does have coverage. Did you try that?
Around the oshkosh appleton area I get 300-1000 kbs down and around 700-800 up.
So wait. How can I piggyback off Verizon with a Sprint phone?? I know both are CDMA but thought theres a big difference between chipsets etc.
Oddly enough too I used to able to use my IPad sling player at work also, thought somewhat choppy at times, but it's NEVER been as bad as it's been the past week or so. I did read somewhere that people are having issues with the new radios so I wonder if that could be the culprit and if flashing to a previous radio would clear things up. Then again I think the 3.70 update requires the new radios to function properly though I could be wrong
Anyway back to crying over my non functioning sling players on iPad and Evo due to lack of any decent reliable bandwidth lol
It's not your radio. I've been running the same radio since the 3.29 update. I'm on the 3.70 build now but, the radio hasn't been updated. I used to get close to 1st meg down here in louisville but since christmas it's lucky to get 150 k.

Hey, we aren't talking of 4G. And no, his speeds are less then 3G. And the issue with Verizons PRL is if more then half or like 500MB is roaming data, then Sprint likes to terminate you.

You and me, in the same boat.
Milwaukee Area
I was recently up in the Milwaukee area over the holidays and the 3G was actually pretty solid at about 1 meg.
In KC, I am lucky to get 256 kb on any given day. Wisconsin doesn't have the 4G network yet - but honestly 4G is over rated (Great speeds if you are outside standing next to the tower and don't mind being tethered to an power outlet)
It is easy to forget that Sprint and other cell phone providers Internet access is still cell phone technology in a world of cable modems and DSL... That the speeds are comparible but there is cell phone "lag" due to the wireless transmissions. And that lag definately will be a factor in gaming and streaming video where packets have to be on time.

I think that's more of a Wi-Max issue than Sprint. LTE doesn't have that problem because they operate at a higher frequency. I believe Sprint and Clear are going to switch to LTE and that might actually be the reason for the delay in some areas. I read an article yesterday about Clear having an LTE network running in Phoenix right now with speeds touching 90 megabits. Google it.
As for my speeds in Brookfield the best I got today was 787 down and 621 up. That's been normal for me.

DOh! Forgot about that... It's right there in sprint's terms and # So really, such use is suitable when traveling, where bulk of the data usage is in a sprint market. But where less than majority (49%?) is while roaming. Of course the 49% is my interpretation. They don't really define what majority means.

Off-network Roaming: The primary use of your Device must be for domestic purposes within the Sprint-owned network. Domestic means use in the 50 United States and U.S. Territories (except Guam). Sprint reserves the right, without notice, to deny, terminate, modify, disconnect or suspend service if off-network usage in a month exceeds: (1) voice: 800 min. or a majority of minutes; or (2) data: 300 megabytes or a majority of kilobytes. The display on your device may not always be on and will not indicate whether you will incur roaming charges. You can monitor usage online through My Account. Roaming is not available with single-band phones, or to customers who reside or whose primary use is outside an area covered by the Nationwide Sprint Network. So I really had to do a double take on this, and I honestly wouldn't believe it if I didn't have this evidence(after all, isn't the saying "pic or it didn't happen!") you're about to see. I have been checking the news lately and ATT had a quiet 4G announcement ceremony 20 hours ago, and a number of places are getting the HSPA+ switchover. Well, I decided to run speedtest and after running a wifi test first, I ran one HSPA test....1406 down, 1744 UP!!!!! I was shocked, and I immediately logged onto xda, excited to report the switch has been flipped, at least the software one; my Fuze running energy can get 2000 up from where I'm sitting; right before I was going to post this thread saying hey everyone they changed it, I thought wait, I don't want to cry wolf, so I went back into the app for 3 more tests. NO MORE HSUPA! I even walked to line of sight with the damn HSUPA enabled tower, and it was off again! WTFFFFFFFFFF!
Here are the pictures of said insanity:
imbx,us/Gys.jpg
imbx,us/GLm.jpg
imbx,us/G2E.jpg
in a sense of irony, I found a weird ball of spiders today, when I uploaded the picture it assigned it the label:
imbx,us/GSM.jpg
I would like to stick this ball of spiders inside Steve Jobs or the ATT CEO's mouth, for what they've done to GSM. Apple made them cripple the HSUPA, and they probably had a year exclusivity deal, which is why a year after the iphone 4 has HSUPA, we get it. Just my guess, I haven't heard anyone say that, but damn, my Fuze has had 2400 upload for years...
Here's another picture of that weird ball I found. It explodes when you touch it...
imbx,us/GBU.jpg
If you can test your Atrix and provide a location in your reply, then we can make this a thread for reporting in areas that have gotten a possible switch. I have a feeling that over the next week changes are going to be made
And in case anyone is wondering why this is in development, well, as far as I'm concerned, this is a DEVELOPMENT, in ANDROID, for the ATRIX. It happens to be a developing situation,
Semantics, I love em!
PS I had to replace the periods with commas in the picture links because I've been a 3 year lurker, not poster.
Addendum
Sorry if I come off a little bit frustrated in my post, but I literally NEED HSUPA in 3 days for some work I'm doing with the national guard and homeland security. If the ATT network permissions are not changed in a couple days, I'm screwed and stuck with my damn Fuze. And that thing sucks! Call/End/Home/Back buttons broken, cannot answer calls because slide to answer disappears when I GET a call, and when I plug in the audio/charging dongle, it will randomly dial people in my contact list...including ex girlfriends...
Anybody dealing with that, would be irate.
No offense. this still doesn't deserve to be in this forum.
And just in case I'm not clear.. You should move it to general..
Xda app via atrix
In retrospect, no problem with that, except I tried editing and I didn't see a parameter to make this post jump to the other subsection; I'll try again, as I have no problem moving it...
Checked, and yeah, I feel like a boner, as I am failing to see any button to delete this post or another item to move it to a more appropriate spot. Hopefully the wise and all knowing Mr. Clown will swoop down on this stupidity of mine. Note to self: pay more attention during 2 am postings....
:S
Yes this should be in General, but also FYI... AT&T can't just "flip" a "software switch" and enable HSUPA on ANY phone. HSUPA is enabled or disabled by the modem installed on the phone, and ANY phone with HSUPA (say, a Captivate running an i9000 modem/kernel) will be able to use it on AT&T's network and they will get those speeds. The Atrix didn't ship with a modem that even HAS the REV6, it shipped with hardware that was "capable" of it, but a modem that was not, and as of the 4.1.57 update, they still haven't released a modem that is. You just stated that you did a wifi speed test right before... It is likely a result of cache files that you got the results you saw... In other words, a fluke.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Rich, I wish I could say it was a fluke, but a couple of things here don't make sense for a fluke: if it was wifi, then why was the 1700 kbps down SUSTAINED? it didn't cut out, it only reverted to baseline UMTS after trying again a few minutes later. Second, my wifi would never put out such a low upload speed, I'm right next to the router, full bars 802.11n on a high speed connection that often upload reports 9 to 5 mbps, never lower. Third, my Fuze, a 3.5 year old device with an olllllld rom, most likely without the release 6 handshake, can connect to HSUPA at 1500-1900 kbps from my office chair, where I have been testing. LOS I get even better, but still, I don't think it was a mistake:
ATT is deploying their "4G". They are going to go live with higher HSPA+ speeds VERY soon, they just had the announcement. What I think happened is this, our phones, being the very well connected devices they are, are provisioned according to device type. I think when I momentarily connected for the first time in several hours, it provisioned me the HSUPA packetstream for a moment. Perhaps because they are changing software and/or equipment at many towers right now, there was a glitch, but right now I see zero evidence for the ookla app royally screwing up; check the pictures, it assigned me a HSUPA stream upon initial connection, sustained it for about 15 seconds, and then I rechecked it about 5 minutes later, and it was back to 360, the practical maximum for UMTS. So since these postings are getting pageviews despite its improper location(I haven't got the powers to move it to general), I would like people reading this to test their phone and chime in, especially if you don't live in the east bay in california like me. I know Orlando airport is supposed to be running HSPA+ right now....
The most convincing thing to me was, when it first ran and i got the typical dl speed of 1500, and then the ul of 1704, it behaved exactly like it was onthe network: the speed oscillated up and down like a realtime connection, losing or gaining dozens of bits during the test. It behaved like it connected with hsdpa and hsupa during every other connection i made with my fuze in ookla, winmo or aosp. And seeing as it(fuze) has the original radio and modem, idk about att's handshake explanation. Then again i make no pretentions of being a high speed packet access engineer....
It is a fluke. Same thing happens to my phone since day o f release. I get good upload once out of 10 tests

Hi jay, i think you may be describing something else; I've run speedtest literally 100 times since release, and during those many tests i saw what you may think i'm describing: for a split second, the speed would jump really high and then plummet to baseline. Saw that many times never sustained. Last night i got a SUSTAINED hsupa stream. If you guys type in at&t 4G into google news and parse by recent, MANY cities are getting the goods, with postings across the country over the past 4 days. AT&T is pumping$ 19 billion dollars into their network this yea and next. I think the transition has already begun. Thats why i made this thread, i want other hspa users tocheck the network around them, i know this misplaced posting is getting way more pageviews than posters....orlando intl should have 6+ mbps connections active right now for example
Guys he is right. Remember AT&T said they would be deploying HSPA+ in April. Well it is April. Now they never said when in April, but I can see them turning region by region on. I do agree it is more than just a switch. They add two more carrots in front of the donkey's to make them run faster so there network runs faster.
I wish someone would post what hspa hspa+ are and sticky it. Just because we get hsupa enabled still does not mean we get hspa+. This is device is capable of 14 mbps down. When we see speeds lime that then hspa + will be enabled... the iphone 3gs tops off at 7 mbs so do the math people. Enabling hsupa will benefit some but most of us wont notice any difference until hspa+ is enabled. Id rather have that right now than faster upload speeds

The speedtest apps on the market have very shoddy coding. It's a known fact. As everyone has been saying, it was a fluke, nothing more.
Bell Canada has HSUPA enabled network since Day 1,
but the software on the Atrix has been disabled HSUPA
so still not works

+1. HSUPA is available now but the modems on the Atrix are limiting us to 300 kbps. I have a Captivate that was limited to 300 kbps uploads. After rooting and flashing (with a different rom and modem) it gets 1500+ kbps upload.
HSPA+ is a different animal that won't translate to the Captivate.
So we're looking for two updates on the atrix.
1) HSUPA enabled...which can be done by AT&T w/ another OTA update that includes a new modem. This will work on the existing infrastructure and should give similar upload performance to the iphones.
2) HSPA+ enabled. I assume this will also require an OTA update but with the updated infrastructure, will bring much faster upload and download speeds (4G).
So after the update my hsupa (upload speed) is fine but my hsdpa (download speeds) are still bad.. im lucky if i get 2mbps (i get it 1/17 times)

The download and upload speeds are still impacted by network capacity and limited backhaul. At&t still doesn't have enough bandwidth from the tower to the web in most areas to provide 4g speeds. The amount of people using the same tower impacts speed as well.
Think of it like a funnel. You can have as many people as you want pouring in the big end, but the only thing flowing is whatever fits out the skinny end.

Don't you think that's something that's getting out of control from ATT. They chronically are refusing to spend their money on beeping up the backhaul and they are sitting on billions. No 4G launch dates nothing is firm in ATT land yet they claim they have almost 100% of their territory covered with hspa+
It's a shame folks.

Please quit being a tool. AT&T is constantly improving the network, and backhual is in place in many of the major markets. As with anything, this isn't just a switch that can be thrown to make stuff faster, it takes time and money. 19B is being spent on this backhaul, and everyday new cell sites are being put into major areas. The 4g craze just started, there are only a couple of devices that even support the speeds, and laying all new fiber isn't an overnight thing. Tell verizon to get their LTE everywhere overnight, see how that works out for you.
Updated and all my DL speeds are the same and in some cases better. Upload is way better of course. Web browsing is noticeably faster too.

I thought i'd pop the ole simcard back into the captivate to see how it worked. I was getting almost double the download speed then on the 1.83 update for atrix (upload was about the same, slightly in captivates favor).

I don't think anyone (else) is coming across as a tool. I'm sure they are working hard and writing checks left and right, but the fact of the matter is that they consistently boast 4g coverage and near 100% hspa+, and I have yet to hear of anyone that is getting consistent speeds of anything that would even remotely resemble 4g.
I completely understand that this isn't an overnight process, and I am pretty sure most of the XDA community gets that as well, but when basically every other carrier has faster data speeds you are going to get backlash from your customers. If they were a bit more committed to giving people a timetable, then I think they could avoid so much criticism.
I don't know if I'd say the "4g craze just started", but somehow AT&T was the last one to get the memo.

I get download speeds between 1-5 Mbps dependent on location and time. Upload is between 1-1.2 Mbps. Think that's more than ok and I never got faster speeds on t-mobiles's "4G" either.
Yeah i just posted in another thread...I'm getting 50% faster DLs than my iphone4 roughly 4000 kbps consistently...but the upload speeds are identical on a handful of tests 1275 kbps...
I guarantee AT&T is again capping upload albeit at a higher speed now....
Location is such a HUGE factor in speeds. I live in Virginia Beach, VA. No Verizon LTE here, Tmobile has their 4G up to about 5 miles from my house, no Wimax from Sprint, just left them b/c fastest 3G I could get was 700kbps. AT&T here is just 3G, but I get 1.5-4mbps everywhere I go. I am no fan of only having 4 major choices and none of them caring about me except for my money, but the grass isn't always greener......and for some of you, it doesn't matter who you had, you would be complaining about something. Just saying.....

please stop spouting misinformation. AT&T is spending money on backhaul, improvements, etc. It doesn't happen overnight. They just announced at the beginning of April that $100 million was being thrown into Denver's (and the rest of Colorado) network, including enhanced backhaul and new cell sites.

that was directed at co.ag.2005 the guy with the Verizon logo as his avatar. Just trying to start stuff for no reason.
Per what you said about every other carrier has better speeds, that's not true at all. AT&T is still the fastest nation wide. Yeah, with verizon you can get 12mb/s, but only in what, 48 cities now? T-mo has like 52, and Sprint has the most with 80 something. Either way, from coast to coast, at&t is the fastest, and you don't find many 3g areas where you'll get the 800kb/s that you get with Verizon's 3g. The only real 4g competition is Sprint because they have so few people using their network that there is alway free bandwidth. AT&T was only last because we were trying to stay away from the 4g hype until t-mo started touting HSPA+ as 4g, so we had to jump on that wagon because, as a hole, consumers are pretty dumb. The HSPA+ is rolled out 100% (all the towers have been upgraded to new nodes to support the faster speed), but fiber has to be laid to the towers. For that we have to pay contractors that work for Time warner, cox, verizon ect (local landlines providers) to get the faster speeds. Until that gets done, we have no control over the speeds that go out. Technically, the 100% hspa+ roll out is true, and because they are a business they will tout those features because, again, most consumers are dumb. They see that AT&T has the largest 4g footprint and they buy products. Just as any business, there's fine print to be read. Don't be mad because your Honda doesn't get the 46mpg they say you will.

I guarantee your wrong. AT&T has no way to cap upload on your device once HSUPA is enabled. There are no tiers of upload speed, it's either on or off. Thanks for the misinformation though.
(check for articles online about how the speed test apps aren't all created equally, and make sure your testing on the same servers)
No, I believe it's just ATT has the worst setup out of the big 4 (at least in the NYC/Tri-State Area).
Our "4G" is considered to be 4-5 down, 1.25 up where as true 4G speeds from what i've been hearing from Verizon and T-mo users are 20 mbps.... And we are lucky if we get 5/1.
And ATT had the nerve to sell a device labeled as "4G" and CAP the uploads, I don't see how a company could deceive its customers that way. I mean, the data plans are ALREADY capped at 2gb for most new users, thats a huge letdown on its own!
Currently, I get max 3/1 with an average of 1.5/350.
after updating to .83 i am getting around 1.6 upload speeds.
so i don't think that they are capped at 1.25.
maybe it is a regional thing.
Prior to updating my network icon showed H+, now it only shows E.

You've been misinformed if you think t-mo is getting 20mb/s. Tmobile has hspa+21, which has a theoretical speed of 21mbps, but you will only get between 5 & 7mbps. As far as verizon's speeds, they get around 20, but only in the few areas they have lte, and that's only because they don't have any traffic on their lte network yet. Around the Tampa area, most people I know are getting around 12mbps. Get the facts straight please, no more misinformation.
