4g speed increase and signal strength - EVO 4G General

With the new PRL update did everyone get increased signals and speeds?
My personal best at home and at a location I am very familiar with was 5.5 Mbps and I thought that was more than good enough.
Well today I tested and my bars increased in my home office by 1 or 2 bars(up and down) and I just got over 11.50 Mbps!
Nice job Sprint. Anyone else get much better results lately through the radio update and PRL change?

I don't get 4g in my house, but I did notice a speed increase with my 3g coverage. I'm in a weak signal area and got around 200-400 kbps with the old prl, and now with the new prl I get 500-700 kbps.

Can't complain about double right?
I also did notice my 3G speed increased as well. I am fortunate to have 4G as now I have a tethering solution wirelessly and USB for PC and MAC
I hope Sprint continues down the path they have been going lately and get a foothold of the 3.5G(4G) market. I am liking their Customer Service and their speeds along with their phones. They are finally understanding the game.

Yeah, I see better signal and 3g speeds with the new prl. Lakeland,fl
Sent from my EVO!

I drive by the Sprint Campus in Overland Park, KS everyday and I have full 4G bars. I have never get over 3.5 and it's really annoying and with all the latest updates it now doesn't go past 1.8...
It's funny though because my 3G speed has in fact increased. Ok, well not so funny because I want the 5+ 4G speeds other's seem to get.

Before 2.2 I used to get spotty 4G coverage at my house with about 5mbps down/1mbps up but didn't notice any issues with battery. Now with 2.2 I consistently get 4G at my house and get about 7-8mbps down/1mbps up, but the battery life is horrible! I left 4G on this morning when I unplugged my phone from the charger around 9AM with 100% battery, its now close to 1PM and I have hardly used to phone (just checked some emails) and I am down to 20% in 4 hours. Anyone else seeing this as well??

Oh yeah, I've noticed a huge increase. Before I wouldn't go past 4MB, now I am getting Over 8MBs! Pic for proof here

I live right in the city of Seattle just northeast of downtown and in a very old building with thick brick walls. I could only get 2 or 3 bars of 3g and could not get a 4g connection at all. when I updated to froyo rooted Rom, and the radio to the 7.28 and wimax to 26023, I can now get 3 bars of 4g!
the 3g signal did not change, but after thinking wimax indoors would never happen due to the structure of my building, surrounding tall buildings, the wavelength used for 4g, and a tiny dead zone a block from my apartment, I am very pleased and surprised.
and no, I did not discover some new magical hotspot of reception inside my apartment - I checked every square inch to find the best reception for tethering in the past and set the phone at the exact same spot, on top of my 2nd window's curtain rod.
this happened before I updated the PRL, but now with the updated PRL it still works the same, so maybe it was partly the radio too?

3g speed varies from evo to evo?

started two weeks ago, I could feel that 3g speed was dramatically slower than before. speedtetst shows ~300kbps. I went to sprint store today. There are two EVOs in the store. Interesting thing is: one of them has similiar 3g speed as mine, another one is really fast ~ 1.7Mbps - 2Mbps. watching sprintTV & youtube are really enjoyable. nothing is different from software&hardware. I can't image how come the performance of the devices are way off each other. Is it EVO or Sprint?
I also noticed this in a weird way. Rebooting my Evo will give me significantly different speeds / pings.
Think is had to do more with the towers. Sprint tends to jump from tower to tower quite often, even if the tower is futher away. I get pretty poor speeds in KC, but when I go to Wisconsin, get 3 to 4 times the speeds. So it is possible for two phones right next to each other to have different speeds, if they are on different towers. Look up antennas apps in the market and see what tower you are connected too, and how often it changes towers while you are stationary.
I tried antennas, it did not work well on EVO. Just found that we have partial 4G coverage around bay area. I tested it out today. the speed is pretty amazing inthe range of 3M - 7M bps . Hopefully we could have all coverage of 4G.

during reboot, I think there are couples of things going on: initializing RF driver/firmwire and re-registration of cell, handshake on the fly to finalize signal/channel/speed rate etc which might result different quality of connection.

3G Radio Stability Problem

I have been experiencing significant 3g radio issues with this phone. The phone often will not maintain 3g signal but shifts from 3 bars of 3g to none to edge to 2 or 3 bars. This is while stationary. initially I thought the antenna on this dvp was poor because I often seemed to have 3g but no bars. But while stationary I get 2 or 3 bars, then nothing so the antenna can receive but the radio can't maintain a lock. i believe this radio seriously needs an update. Anyone else experiencing this issue?
I'm having the same problems. I'm hoping they update it soon.
Is this while you are holding it? The DVP (like the HD7) seems to have deathgrip.
Don't know about the death grip, but just noticed the issues thread at the top is reporting this issue also as common for all dvp's. Don't know if that is conclusive, but I may have found a temporary solution until they can get the radio patched. Will share if I can keep the 3g stable the rest of today.

Please do share. I'm getting frustrated about this issue.
I have noticed that the latest DVP that I have is having more connectivity issues with 3G than the Engineering Sample that I had in November. My other TMO phone gets a decent signal but the DVP keeps fluctuating from 3 bars to no signal while sitting next to my other phone that has a strong signal.
I certainly hope this is something that they can address but I am starting to wonder if my quest for this form factor and screen is in vain.
Ok, today I had a difficult time getting the phone to lose it's 3g connection. Only in an area known to have little or no 3g reception did my dvp switch to edge when I was in a restaurant. Other than that I was edge free all day. This kept me free of lock ups today and improved battery life. 3G reception was improved but still showed need for signal consistency. Hopefully a radio firmware patch will fix this soon. Meanwhile it seems that going into the phone's settings and turning on location and also checking both check boxes under "find my phone" have had the effect of keeping the phone in 3g for me.

Your checkbox idea kind of works. I will watch it all through the day and see if it holds.
I am happy to report that the 'sureloch' suggestion really works and i haven't seen the signal switching like crazy. If an area has 3G reception the DVP holds on.

It worked for me too in some areas. Does ATT has more 3g coverage than Tmobile? I live in Los Angeles county and for some reason my wife (att) gets more 3g. Is it because I have the DVP that the signal isn't that good?
Has anyone noticed any adverse effect on battery life?
Will try it myself.. I have noticed using mobilespeedtest.com it seems the pone switches "on" 3G.. I will be at 2 bars Edge and then run the test and poof I get 3 bars of 3G.
That said I have been getting CRAZY fast (HSDPA+) speeds. Be it at the T-mbile store or my front porch.. I consistantly get 10MBPS to 37MBPS.. using 2MB and 7MB tests !
Anyone else getting 4G speeds on thier DVP?

So even though the DVP never shows an "H" but instead just stays on the "3G" symbol, you're saying that speedtests suggest it is doing HSPDA?

Yes, it shows 3G on the phone. And that's what the results say. Here is the result for each test.
100KB: 1.6mbps (me) 2.5mbps (4G/Wimax) 400kbps (3G/HSDPA)
500KB: 4.04mbps (me) 2.5mbps (4G/Wimax) 400kbps (3G/HSDPA)

2MB: 16.0mbps (me) 2.5mbps (4G/Wimax) 400kbps (3G/HSDPA)
5MB: 20.6 mbps (me) 2.5mbps (4G/Wimax) 400kbps (3G/HSDPA)
7MB: 23.7 mbps (me) 2.5mbps (4G/Wimax) 400kbps (3G/HSDPA)
I am surprised. I think it might be because t-mobile is using the same 3G band for 4G(if its the case)?

I have gotten as high as 32.5 mbps on the 7MG test regularly..
Nice to see others having the same "issue".
Isn't it nice to have an "issue" with the phone or something undocumented that is a PLUS and not a minus
That said its reporting of Edge or 3G strength bands varies greatly standing in the same place with my hands on or not on the phone (although it does seem to jump around more when I am holding it.)
So I am thinking the DVP maybe throttling down what band your on depending on what the phone is doing. I.e. its not reporting how much signal you are getting but how much signal you are using..? Is that possible?
I am showing between 20-30mb/sec on t-mobile, phone signal says 3g, but that is how fast it is transferring the 7mb file consistently. Other tests show similar results for smaller file size tests. Mobilespeedtest.com
The official specs of the phone list HSDPA 7.2 Mbit and HSUPA 5.6 Mbit. These numbers sound fishy.
Dslreports.com/stest reports my venue pro maxing out ~3.5mb/s using the mobile browser speed and latency test.
Had the same issue, returning it today =(

4G in Jackson, MS!

I thought it would be at least two more years, but I was wrong. It's not great coverage, (I have to hold my phone to the window at work) but i got 3300kbps down on the one speed test I took before my arm got tired. I'll try it outside, and see if there is a difference after work. 3G speeds have also improved significantly in the past week or so. (From 150kbps avg to 1000kbps avg)
Hooray!!
I also connected driving thru Mobile yesterday. It's not on sprints coverage map. But Clears Android app showed a couple spots with it. Only bout 2mps tho. That's with 1 bar
Edit 2 days later gettin 4.5 mbps thru mobile

What part of Jackson, MS are you in? I picked up a 4g signal the other day when I accidentally turned on 4g. I've only gotten a connection in extreme north Jackson though (North of I-55 exit 100 Northside Drive). I've gotten closer to 5000kbps down on my Evo. The signal is strongest @ County Line Road.
Ft Smith and Van Buren AR are also 4G, though not on the coverage map. I've been using Sensorly to map the coverage.
Awesome to hear.. 4 g is slowly starting to pop-up in the New Orleans metro area. I now have 4g around my house but not around other parts of the city. "kinda hit or miss"
I've been literally driving around Jackson with 4g on to see what I could pick up. The 4g signal is strong downtown also. Full roll out coming soon? That would make me buy an HTC Evo View tablet in a heartbeat!

4G speeds...

I have a USB Data Card. u301. I have an antenna plugged in to it mounted on the roof and I get full service. Speeds at around 13.6 Down, 1.40 up. I plug the Epic in and with full service. Speeds at around 2.61 Down, 0.42 up. WTF? huh...
I get 4-6 Mbps down on average with bursts above 8. 1.4 on the download. My speeds have actually gotten better over the past 2 months.

I was impressed in chicago
4G is an absolute dead end for anyone in New York (unless you're smack in the middle of the city). Here on the upper west side, 4G is far less reliable than 3G and when it does work offers no substantial speed increase.
Just ran a few speedtests from inside my apartment here in downtown Portland, OR
12006kbps down, 1486kbps up was the best.
Pretty beefy!

thats not entirely true. i live in brooklyn ny and i have great 4g. averages around 7-8mbps
I've tested 4g speeds all over Denver since it came here, and have seen a striking contrast in different areas that are only a few blocks apart.
Aurora seems to range from around 3 mb/1.5 mb on the high side to just under 1 mb/0.3 mb, but there are a lot of holes in coverage (and the in-and-out coverage areas at the edge of said holes, of course). Once in a while, I have seen dl speeds up to 5 mb, even 7 on two occasions, but that only lasted for a half hour at best... ul speeds have never exceeded 1.5 mb for any of my tests.
I have seen more consistent ~5 mb upload speeds in parts of southwest denver and surrounding areas (englewood, littleton, etc.), though upload still signed like it was capped at 1.5 mb. But even some of those areas have had dead zones and flaky signal.
I have had one intermittent problem that could be my phone or the network - once in a while, everything will appear as if my phone is connected just fine, but I can't reach the internet. Go back to 3g and I'm fine, but when I reconnect to 4g, whether immediately or after a few minutes, it still behaves like a local network with no internet... Anyone else have this problem in Denver?

Nah I live in the bronx and I get great 4g lol when I'm outside though. Myhouse is a lead box, apparently. I get 1 bar inside but it barely holds on to it.
There are a few dead spots though around the city. Like, BLATANT holes inthe coverage.
But other than that, I'm completely satisfied with 4g...I even get 1MB (yes byte) consistently when I'm chillen outside.
They could lower the ping though...1MB speed is still garbage when it takes a second for your command to go through.
I remember when I bought my epic downtown the first thing I did was turn 4g on and it connected...this was in october BEFORE 4g became official in the city lol I ike sprints commitment to nyc

I've noticed that the clear 4g network is going through a lot of throttling changes. I've noticed they have been keepin the phones below 8Mb most of the time and clear itself is using a bandwidth throttle that doesn't seem to have a clear reset period. Streaming video has brought my home modem and usb modem to a .67 Mb crawl for thelast few days. But when I'm not being throttled I see up to 14Mb down.one last note I have yet to see any bandwidth throttling on the phones 4g tho. Blemh I think I have to go back to comcast for home internet:-(

I've never really used 4G on my phone. It's only functional if I turn data off, then turn 4G on and stay stationary. If I'm driving it simply stops working. At least half the time it just connects, goes to sleep and stays that way until I toggle it off.
This plus the Overdrive I used to have is pretty much a fail sandwich.
Seattle/Lynnwood/Redmond areas primarily. SRF ROM, though it's pretty consistent across ROMs.
I use speedtest.net for my tests, both on my phone with the app and my tethered laptop via the website. I have tried all but a couple of the modems (I didn't bother with some of the leaks that came out almost back to back, because there was already a newer leak when I found time to flash). The results did vary slightly between modems, but not significantly enough for any one modem to stand out as the best or worst - some almost seemed to have good and bad times of day, and not necessarily the same times between modems (probably coincidence due to the random fluctuations in connection quality that I described in my previous post)

I agree completely with the above. In my apt on Upper East Side, 4g speeds are fine - but I get constant drops and terrible speeds (as in slower than 3g) on Upper West in my office. Have wifi at home so don't need 4G there, but would love to tether off 4G in my office. Sprint 4G sux

what does 995kB/s dl translate to? lol, it was insanely fast only a couple of times I tested it like 5 months back in san diego... I must have been the only guy that connected because now my 3g speeds tend to be on par with my 4g... and that was on 2.2...

Ok so I ran a few tests on the Upper West Side this morning and the results were mildly surprising.
On 4G, I maxed out at about 6.0 Mbps down and 0.65 up with pings in the 140 range.
3G, on the other hand, maxed out at 0.3 Mbps down about 0.5 Mbps up with pings of roughly 260.
So, we've basically got no difference between 3G and 4G upstream and glorified dial-up for 3G down.
I'll try some more later from a different location.

so I had to do a bit of driving around Manhattan today and decided to test 3G and 4G speeds in several areas. the short version of what I found: my neighborhood has the absolute worst 3G and 4G of any of the other neighborhoods I drove through. most of the Upper West Side south of me boasted around 4.6 Mbps down and 1.4 Mbps up. 3G was roughly 1.0 Mbps down and 0.85 up. In midtown, 4G was roughly 3.3 down a 1.0 Mbps up.
Compare that with my neighborhood where 3G doesn't crack 0.3 Mbps down and actually has faster upstream. I called Sprint and they claimed there is a "tower down" relatively close to me, and after some pressing, gave me a $25 credit for the down time.

Nexus 4 Signal Strength Fluxuations

Does anyone have a problem with their Nexus 4 signal strength?
I have Bell Canada, which is supposedly has the best coverage in Canada, I live in the suburbs of a relatively large city and I often see no bars at all. I'm sitting on my couch right now and the signal strength is ranging from -97 dBm to -110 dBm.
Do 2.4 Ghz band devices interfere at all? I have bunch of portable phones and 2 routers, so maybe this is related?
Nexus 4 on T-Mobile
I am in Portland OR in an area of good signal according to T-MO but my nexus rarely shows any signal bars inside my house. This is my 3rd N-4. T-Mo says they have great signal in my area.... so what gives with this signal thing?
My reception has been wonky ever since the 4.2.2 and baseband update.

I get 1-2 bars in my house usually between 95-105 db, outside I get low 80's and full or near full at all times. Even though my bars inside top out at 2 I have still managed to pull up to 13 Mbps but thats on a sunny day. Didn't see any results above 9 Mbps today. I live on the outskirts of a not so major city so I can't really complain. One minute I'm pulling 10 Mbps and the other I'm only getting like 200 Kbps though, but it's all good enough for what I need it for and I can't complain since its only $30/month. I just transferred from Virgin Mobile after their "upgrade" resulted in me and many other of their customers losing data for the last 3 weeks and to this date its still not fixed! Their "3G" speeds were atrocious, I've pulled higher speeds off of T-Mobiles 2G network.
I hear a lot of us who are on 4.2.2 and baseband .48 have had issues so I'm thinking its either a major software issue with the radio firmware that hasn't been addressed yet in any revision or it could be a major hardware issue as well as I flashed .27, .33, and .48 and noticed no differences. I had to set my phone to WCDMA Only to get it to maintain a good connection, otherwise HSPA/HSPA+ would just cut out after 2 minutes of use and revert to 2G or have no data at all for 5-10 minutes. After switching to WCDMA Only this problem went away completely and I haven't lost a signal since. For whatever reason it picks up more adjacent towers as well on this setting.
I have that kind of problem also though I notice it only when the signal is weak.
It goes from -99dbm to -111dbm with no reason. My other phone (Defy) keeps a good -97 at the same spot without any fluctuation.
I will try to switch to wcdma only.
