I think that its far away. Most people can barely check their email on their phone. It seems like a lot can barely check it on their computer.
If the banks/credit card companies get involved with this, they will have nothing to worry about in the future.

I think its a step to get us closer to the tech that the uk and japan have plus it could help shops because with the charges that visa and mastercard make places pay when u swipe ur credit or debit cards since our gov won't regulate them

Cellular south tried that a few year ago. I was lucky enough to demo a unit for them. They gave me a limit each month for a few months then I had to feel out a survey. With their phone it was like a prepaid account, you would add money to it and could only spend what you had in the account. Evidently it didnt go to well, cause they dont offer it, But I kinda liked it.

Yes the no contract plans known now as flex pay are on their way out. I recently did an online survey on this. Looks like the same plans will be offered as those on contract with an added feature of being able to set overage limits. If you don't want to pay for extra monthly minutes you can set it up to shut off your service when you reach your max. If you want to be able to go a little over you'll be. Able to set a dollar amount. Of course the only info I have comes from a consumer survey.

http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/12/09/sprint-taken-to-court-over-10-monthly-premium-data-fee/
i think its stupid. Sprint is the only carrier that is giving us unlimited access through 4G.
If you look at the data plans being offered by the other carriers, we're getting such a good deal. Take a look at the proposed plans for Verizon's LTE network, you have a data allowance of only a few gigs for a lot more than we're paying Sprint.
I don't mind paying 10 bucks a month for a service that I use. I mean I use a lot of data every month, and I live in an area where I get 4G so 10 bucks a month for unlimited access is fine by me.

I agree with you. I use the 4g service as well, but ill be moving soon to an area that doest have it. I'm still going to pay the 10 dollar fee because I'll still be close to an area that has it.
Now I wasn't to happy at first about the 10 dollar fee because of how they explained it to me, but I'm fine now since we aren't going to a data tiered payment scale and I've been using it for a while.
Some people always look for something to complain about. I could probably give the people who are suing a free table and they would complain about the color.
Sent from my shoe, I mean....Epic shoe... I mean Samsung Epic!
I think it's a pretty stupid lawsuit. People should have already known what they are getting into when shopping for phones, 4g data maps are posted. It shows where 4g is and where it isn't. As for me I'm happy paying the extra 10 bucks a month for actual unlimited data through 4g data, and not being charged an extra $.05/mb over 5gigs. You will be surprised how much data is used playing cod online.
But I see this as people being on a 300min/month plan going over and then complaining about the charges, or being on a 600min/month plan and complaining about the minutes not being used. People just want to find ways to complain and make money off others, but who am I to say it's wrong to do so.
Just my 176kb's from my 4G Epic.
Im not paying that layer a damn thing by calling him. It will be nice to give me 15% off my phone bill though sprint lol.
I think the charge is justifiable.. only for those in 4g areas though. I'm paying 10 extra a month for something I don't have access to.. that's entirely unjust.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Here's my $.02. I live in an area that just recently has gotten 3g fairly consistant, 4g is doubtful anytime in the near future. I was "sold" this $10 plan by a rep who told me that even though I don't have 4g, having that plan gives me faster data. She also told me that the epic syncs more than my than my Moment because it has a more advanced operating system.. lol.. I argued with her point for a while, but ultimately knew I was forced into the plan. I just hate the lack of training and knowledge people at the stores have. Why not raise everyones data plan or phone plan a dollar.. think how much more money that would generate than 10 bucks from 4g phone owners.
Dex
Edit: I just realized that since 2007 this is my first post.. Talk about lurking...
My only complaint is that we should be given a choice to opt out of the 4g plan - many people don't live anywhere near a 4g tower.
And what about the folks who want the hardware capabilities of a galaxy s phone but don't need the 4g features? Does Sprint recommend that they switch carriers?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
is EVERY sprint customer this much of a PITA? there isn't one of us that doesn't have some type of corporate discount on our plans.. the plans are CHEAP compared to other carriers.. maybe 20-40 less/month for an individual plan and you only pay 50-100 bucks more up front for a phone.. and 4g is expensive to provide. it's not that they can just go to a tower and click the 4g switch and its there. i work at a sprint store and evvveerrry day get people asking why they have to pay the ten a month.. usually a minute before or after they tell me how 4g isn't everywhere. if you want it to work everywhere, it's gonna cost money. not fair for people that don't have 4g devices that just talk and text.. or worse.. the old folks on the 30 dollar basic plans to cover our share of data
think about it.. we're on a sight dedicated to getting the most out of our phones. we use more data than the active user.. deal with it or get NOT the coolest phone in the world
cepppptt.. a group rate for a family plan would be nice - like att/verizon does texting for 20 a month per or 30 for up to 5.

So that they can build a few more towers in my area. Its ridiculous, I only get like 2 bars of 4g everywhere I go.
I think the lawsuit is a waste of taxpayer money. Those that are complaining about the fee shouldn't have a device that requires it. You signed a contract that clearly disclosed the fee and no matter what the fee is for or how fair you think it is you voluntarily chose to pay the fee by purchasing and activating a phone that requires it. No one made you do that.
I am offended that the money I am required to pay in taxes with out any choice in my part is being used so a bunch of idiots can try to get the government to change something they choose to pay. I bet many of these same people will be the first ones to say that they pay too much in taxes or the government doesn't spend their money wisely.

There is no question that it sucks, but you are basically "investing" in Sprint's/Clearwire's rollout of 4g. Eventually 4g will be "free", which means the cost will just be folded into all plans.

I never said anyone is suing the government. I said that this is a waste of our taxpayer money. You do know that we the taxpayers pay for the courts where the case will be tried, don't you?
I also never said that the government spends money wisely. I said the same idiots that think sprint should be sued over this are probably the same ones that would cry that their taxes are too high and that government doesn't spend money wisely.
Why do people think that they should use the tax payer supported court system to go after sprint when they could have easily just not bought a phone that required the fee? This attitude that because you think something that you agreed to is unfair, that we the taxpayers should fund the judge, jury, court room, and other infrastructure is what is truly unfair. Because see, the rest of us taxpayers don't have any choice but to fund the court that will hear this stupid lawsuit while you had a choice to not pay the fee but getting a diffetent phone. Those that participate in this lawsuit are the ones that are being unfair to the rest of us taxpayers.

Sprint says it's for a more robust experience due to things like the super fast 1ghz processor and what not. What does the processor speed have to do with 4G and if the $10 fee isn't for 4G, as Sprint says, why is it only charged on phones that have 4G capabilities?
Personally, I think they should make 4G access an opt-in thing like they do with the Hotspot feature. Especially since Wimax is pretty much non existent for most people. And even where it is available, there's to many holes. Holes as in it doesn't work (To me it doesn't work if the access is spotty or the speeds aren't any better then their 3G service) once you walk into most builds/homes and who wants to stand outside to just use 4G?
Based on Sprints reason on why they charge a $10 fee on their 4G phones, why is everyone paying a monthly fee when they've already paid for the phone upfront? It's not like the Epic or Evo are priced like the Optimus.
BTW, from that I read, I think Sprint pays $4.50 to Clearwire for every 4G capable phone but is currently trying to renegotiating their contract with Clearwire to only pay the fee on phones sold in 4G areas. It seems to me Sprint feels is unfair to pay for something that's not available for all their phones, but wants it's customers to do what they don't want to do themselves.

So I should be penalized for wanting to have a good, powerful phone. I see. Clearly, I chose this phone because it was a good phone not because it had 4g. I argued for an hour with the sprint rep and told him that I did NOT agree with the charge nor did I accept his bull**** about it coming soon to my area. At every step of the way, I have been clear with Sprint that I wanted a powerful phone but do not care about 4g. How can I contest the charge? Cancel my service and pay a cancellation fee? How is it not a violation of my rights as a consumer to force me to pay a fee for wanting a good phone and have my only other option be a hefty cancellation fee? As a fellow tax-payer I am offended by your unjustified self-righteousness.
Yes, the government pays for the courts, I'm quite aware of that. But they pay for every case of someone claiming "whiplash" in a car accident when the reality is a person just trying to screw the insurance company. They pay for every case where someone who is breaking into a home gets injured and sues the homeowner. I deserve my justice much more than those people and the hundreds of millions of others who abuse the judiciary system. And you don't deserve to ***** about it. =)
It's pretty simple folks, you want a "premium" phone then you pay the "premium fee" nobody forced you to buy the phone but if you did then you agree to pay any associated fees. End of discussion

No I am not just "doomsday guessing" as you said. I am speaking from experience. I was a AT&T customer about 3 years ago and I had a very bad experience with them. So I paid my cancellation fee and moved on. I was only with them for not quite a year and just got feed up with them. My mom just last week had her phone and my step fathers phone turned off and went to a prepaid service. My mom was a AT&T customer for 21 years, she had her home phone and cellphones through AT&T. She had her numbers disconnected cause she had been calling AT&T's costumer service and going to her local AT&t for 6 months straight to try to get a better deal on her cell phone plans cause she was paying $280 dollars a month for her service and she or my step dad did not have smartphones. They both had dumb phones and nether one of them used there phone for any kind of internet, instant messaging, or multimedia messaging. Heck my mom and step father barely new how to even use the dumb phones they had. Plus the reception they got at their house was terrible, could not even stand inside the house to talk on the phone. Both of their phones where pieces of **** and AT&T would not offer her any other dumb phones for a decent price. Like I said my mom was a customer with AT&T for 21 years. and they treated her like ****. So don't come at me with "Cause it sure seems like a lot of T-mobile customers magically know more about ATT than the actual, you know, customers" crap. I know plenty about AT&T. And I know they just want T-Mobiles network they could give a crap less about keeping their customers.
Plus one, not to mention that most tmobile customers used to be on att and ran from them.

Now here's the interesting part. That number doesn't make sense unless they had an unlimited minutes plan with more than 2 phones or a 4000 minute plan with Canada calling. So it sounds like either a salesperson talked them into an expensive plan or they chose a Canada package or were given one.
In either case, they could have changed plans. And no, I don't believe that they weren't allowed. That just sounds like bull****.
Your facts are wrong about ATT, they've been around way longer than 10 years...the U.S. government made them break up over 20 years ago because they were a monopoly..Cingular was born, and after the dust settled, ATT quietly bought them back.

monopolies are never good.
Although I agree that monopolies or the such almost never benefit the consumer, the probability that AT&T will buy T-Mobile increases every given day with the recent AT&T ads that advocate their point being aired. So, if T-Mobile is up for grabs, I as a consumer would rather have Google own the brand instead of it being absorbed into another carrier. At least then, T-Mobile would have a little more leverage in the market with Nexus device exclusivity and the likes. I mean, Verizon has 1) Tons of coverage across the country and 2) both the iPhone and Android devices. Sprint's selling point is that they have some of the most innovative HTC devices out there so if T-Mobile had exclusivity rights with Google directly, then they could be propelled back into a competitive spot as a national carrier. Sorry for the post being so long, but T-Mobile was the first carrier to adopt Android, as many fans will tell you, and it pains me to see them tank just because other carriers are snatching up some of the best devices from the best manufacturers hence my aforementioned standpoint.
Google buying tmobile would be retarded. That awesome customer service that T is known for....gone. You guys need to face the facts...DT is selling T because it's losing money and costumers regularly now. It's not worth it to them to invest in the deployment of faster service anymore. They see T as having the best shot of profitabilty as a sale. If att buys it they buy it at a decent price. If it fails....it goes to tne next highedt bidder(s). So instead of ending up with awesome coverage with higher prices we will more than likely end up with whatever 4th rate carrier piggybacks on att network in your area.
Google is advertising company...what makes you think they are qualified to run a mobile phone and data service? They couldnt even provide CS for the N1.
Remember, tmobile will be sold...either as a company or as spectrum.

Why would it be retarded for google to buy t-mobile? First they have the money needed to make a company like that profitable, and losing money to google is probably like pissing water, they are gigantic.
And if they did buy T-Mobile, why would Google phones only be available through "Google Mobile"? Google could sell to every person and have exclusive phones for their GMobile service... Haha GMobile niceeee....
By having a company like T-Mobile around this entire time it has kept ATT and Verizon at bay with pricing and competition. T-Mobile has a large enough customer base, and network built up that if someone was unhappy with one of the two big guys you would just go to T-Mobile and smile at the end of the day not realizing why you didn't go with T-Mobile in the first place and save some money so you could buy a few extra bags of weed. Sheesh.

Why would it be retarded for google to buy t-mobile? First they have the money needed to make a company like that profitable, and losing money to google is probably like pissing water, they are gigantic.

Because Google is not a mobile phone company, nor a telephone company. Their products are continually in beta. Do you not remember the customer service people had with the nexus one? There's a reason they don't sell phones directly anymore. Google buying Tmobile would make me switch faster than when ATT buys them.

If they bought T-Mobile they wouldn't have terrible customer service. You're implying all of the current staff of t-mobile would just vanish, which I doubt would happen if they bought T-Mobile. They would probably keep most everything the same. They would be buying the company, not just changing the name.

It would be retarded because:
A) There is no rumor, no speculation of google EVER buying any carrier.
B) Google would obviously want to promote their own carrier, so most of their phones that are flagships would be their carriers only, which would make other carriers jealous.
C) ATT is buying TMO get the **** over it. Dont like it? Go move to Verzion, sprint or even... METRO.

I agree with C. I just switched over to AT&T, and they're not even bad. Plus they have a good deal going on where you basically get unlimited minutes for the price of their cheapest minute plan.

Sorry to butt in but B is the only point that starts to helps your argument. A states why it's not likely, which was never part of the discussion, and C is the reality of it.

Straight Talk selling SIM cards for BYOP!!

Okay. So this isn't really a question as much as a head's up. But I'd like to hear personal experiences either way. Straight Talk is now selling SIM cards for activation using your own phone! This is a website-only offer. So if anyone happens to try this out, please, do tell!

I guess you're in the us to get this excited? In Europe this has been available for 20 years...

awesome! now i dont have to buy a $50 phone just to get the sim...this just gets easier and easier!!
In US, can you not buy your mobilephone one place, and the data/sms/voice subscription another? Do you have to get locked in to a long deal with dataplans and so on, only to buy the phone you want? Maybe I understand it wrong. That would be illegal here (in Norway), due to customers right to chose freely where they want to purchase services. Its also the same system all over the country, so all phones can be used in all networks.
I have wondered for a while, how is this in USA and other countries?
No this is just the case with straight talk, a cheap prepaid provider.
Edit: Though carrier phones do come locked to that carrier.

Ok, that is the same here, with prepaid service and locked phones, in order to get it for a lower price if you are willing to buy a provider-locked phone.
My speeds aren't great with AT&T around 2 down and 1 up. Are straight talk speeds comparable?

Missed delivery of my Straight Talk sim card yesterday...have to wait til Monday. My unlocked Note should be here end of next week early following week.
Super excited about this. Granted I'm just doing it to try out the International Note before Verizon's "Journal" comes along, but I'm going to use my RAZR hotspot for data, but I will report back with speeds using Straight Talk, once I get it.
I'd really like to see how that turns out. Please keep us posted!

Will do...I may push the data usage a bit and see how much I can get away with. Nothing major mind you.
I'm in Baltimore, Maryland and I used the old sim swapping way to get straight talk service. So far I'm impressed. I'm getting a consistent 3-4+ M down and 1.5 Up. Thats way higher than the 1M down and 100k up I was getting on T-mobile with my sensation 4g and the 150k down 100k up I was getting when I had an Evo on Sprint.
In the mobile phone world, the US seem so far behind! I often see in US movies people using flip open phones with an antenna stub, or even a pull up antenna. Phones we had in the '90s.
"You can get hold of me on my cell..."
Of course! Like a week after I buy a phone for ~$123 (including shipping) from Wal Mart.
I wonder if I can return this one to Wal Mart. I hope so.
I put a thread together here that shows how to set this up. (Or will these SIMs work without having to change all this stuff?)
There are currently three different types of SIM cards Straight Talk is offering; SIM cards for locked AT&T phones, SIM cards for locked T-Mobile phones, and SIM cards for unlocked phones. As long as you buy the appropriate card for your type of phone, you should be able to get full service.
And as for the US's current state of mobile technology, I rarely see anyone other than drug dealers using prepaid flip phones. The main problem with mobile service in the US is the carriers. Carriers don't sell unlocked phones. Most carriers have no truly unlimited data plan to speak of. And plan pricing, for the most part, is outrageous... especially with AT&T. The reason this Straight Talk SIM card business is such a big deal is simple. My AT&T plan is $90/mo. It includes 450 minutes, unlimited text, and 2GB of data. With Straight Talk for $45/mo., I can get unlimited minutes, unlimited text, and unlimited data. I can get unlimited everything for two phones on Straight Talk for the same monthly rate that AT&T charges for one phone. And AT&T doesn't even have an unlimited smartphone data plan... at all!

That used to be the case, but no so much anymore. You do still see 90s style phones on cheap prepaid operators like Tracfone, but the top end phones on the big carriers are pretty much the same as we get in Europe.
Plan costs and data allowances are often dreadful though!

This is definitely an awesome deal for people in the US. That's why my Straight Talk SIM should be here today. I've been dealing with using Edge on Simple Mobile because I wasn't going to give in and pay $180 a month for two lines on AT&T.
I'm definitely hoping for some decent data speeds.

Straight Talk Sim card just showed up...now waiting on my Note ....getting anxious.
Hmm, I was considering adding another line just so I could keep my iphone and the Note, both with data instead of switching between the two, but I didn't want the additional voice plan with At&t. This sound pretty sweet. Since I mainly want the unlimited data, $45 for it is not bad at all. If the data speeds are not that great, I just won't renew after a month. Definitely going to try this.
Had my GN for a week now, rooted and ready for a new rom. My Straight Talk sim will be arriving in 2 days so I can test out the data speeds around my area in the suburbs of NYC. Well worth the $45 30day plan with no contracts. IMO.
I will be driving down to Florida (20 hours) next week so this is also a good opportunity to test the data speeds along Interstate 95. If this works well, I will definitively port my Sprint # to Straight Talk and cut my bill more than half.
No, for the most part, if you don't go prepay, you have to go to a carrier, which LOCKS the phone to their network. Even if you put a different SIM card in the phone, it will not work, unless they unlock it (or you use an online unlock service).
Most of the time, I've had no issues getting the carrier to unlock the SIM card, after you have either been on their service a while, or, are a good standing customer (bills paid on time). I just tell them I'm going out of country, need an international SIM, and the code shows up in my email within 24 hours.
The reason the U.S. market is the way it is, was the business model that the carriers adopted a long time ago. They offer you a "free" or "reduced" price
phone, by showing you the alleged retail price. You "think" you are getting
a huge bargain, but, they lock you into a 2 year contract, which more than
makes up whatever reduced price you are receiving on the phone.
We all know, the "retail" price of the phone isn't what the manufacturer pays,
since they buy in bulk. Heck, the "49.99" phone they sell you, is most likely
what they paid for it in the first place, and the carriers laugh all the way to
the bank! But, the moron consumers in the USA, who never have been taught
economics, think they are getting a bargain, so they come into a carrier store,
and the carrier drones just toss a line, hook em and reel them in.
