I'm hoping I'm wrong, maybe I've had too much beer , or maybe just bad luck, but am I the only one noticing poor battery life while using LauncherPro ?
As much as I like it, it's the only thing that has changed on my phone in the past few days and now I'm seeing 8, maybe 9 hours battery life with actually less usage than before (I'm on vacation, I removed my Activesync push-mail account from the phone for this week) as opposed to 16 hours or so before hand.
So, is it just me?
Any feedback is appreciated!
I've notice the same with lp pro. Switched to awd.launcher and battery life improved.

Not here, I switched to launcher pro and usually get 18 hours, also using Juice Defender.
I'm gonna try Juice Defender without LauncherPro, see how much of a difference it makes, then switch back and test if it was a decent bump.
Just look at the battery use and you can find out how much LP is using
It actually didn't show ANYTHING for LP.

I haven't really noticed my battery use since I started using LP. Where can I easily check battery use by application (or what software will show this)?
so I'm using TouchWiz now, with JuiceDefender and I'm going on 15 hours uptime and I'm at 70% battery. Pretty light use tho, since it sat overnight with no use.
Been using LauncherPro since I got the phone. Not having battery life problems with it over default or adw.
When on standby (ie not using the screen), this phone lasts a pretty long time. But one you use that bright, beautiful screen it can use up some battery pretty quick.
That said, i've been listening to music on my phone for the past 7 hours, watched 42 minutes of a chuck episode, checked personal emails, browsed some websites, ran a speed test, and i'm at 25% battery now. Display ate up 64% of that battery loss.

Currently at 18h 14m on and have 68% left. Cell Standby is the top battery user with 36%.
I got the phone on launch day and have used TW half the time and LauncherPro half the time. I can't say that I have noticed any difference in the battery life since I started using LauncherPro. It showed up once in the Battery Use screen (it was at like 2%) but that was the day I was setting it up and playing around with it. Since then it hasn't made a blip on the radar.

ditto home slice!
I swear I was gonna do a write up on this today, but it looks I got beat to it. Last week I thought I was going nuts, because I too noticed better battery life while using LP. So, I decided to run a test these last few days. This past Thurs, and Fri I ran LP all day for the whole day, and got great battery life! I was able use my phone all day without recharging the battery once. This past Sat, and Sun I ran with TW with the same settings, and Widgets as I did with LP. The outcome was not good at all. On both days I would be lucky to get a half day out of my phone.
So, all and all this leads me to believe that something is up with TW, and the amount of battery power its pulling. To me it just makes no sense to me as of yet, but for now I'm just gonna keep running LP. Hope someone can shine some light on this, because I would really like to know why this is going, and what causing it?

I didn't want to mention that I kind of think that I am getting BETTER battery life with LauncherPro. I figured that it was partially due to the "new" wearing off. Since you broke the ice I will admit that I have a feeling that LP is easier on the battery.

Wow thats amazing... and your the first to make such a claim and have proof to back it up! @ days and change... wow! (hope its not photo shopped)... also running live wallpapers etc... very impressive! Still with 30 percent batt left?! What batery meter are u using btw... damn I think i might try that combo on my epic now...lol!
nice share!
but looks like very mild usage... what kind of batt do u get with moderate and heavy usage?

Sorry, I cannot do screenshot 'cos my phone is not rooted and complete stock everything, but as I posted in some other battery related thread my phone hold to 2 days 12 hours and 30 min with 3% left over Columbus day weekend.
BTW, TWS was over 50%
battery meter is in blue minimalist theme and not photo shopped i have posted other screen shots with 45 hours and so on. stud muffler if you cant go download shoot me to provide screen shots i dont believe you are getting that battery life especially because the sprint apps use the most juice and the galaxy rom is way more conservative scaling on the cpu. also no one else on stock is making the same claim as you are with that usage dont make claims you are not able to back up with proof this is android not apple. everything can be verified very easily. you do not need root for shoot me. if im not at my house where i have wifi my battery gets drained really fast on 3g with no data usage kinda sucks.
I see that the Display is at 11%. What kind of usage is this? The math says that is about 4.5 hours of being "on". I can see with the right setup those sorts of numbers being attainable. The difference being actually using the device a lot would kill more battery. What exactly is your usage pattern?
Edit: Whoops I didn't read all the way. Wifi is a big plus for battery life. I'm tempted to try out the Galaxy rom now.

so whats the point of this thread? I can do this too at my house, just hook up to wifi and the battery lasts forever, its the 3g that drains it as you said.
That's pretty amazing...I'm wondering what the 1 battery is? Car battery perhaps? LOL
I think the most I ever got with light/almost no use was around 19 hours with about 10-13% remaining battery. That's just a guess though...I wasn't trying to test the battery...just didn't talk to anyone for a day or use the phone for anything in general.
Somethings not right. Since when does the screen eat up less than any other process? Thats the top drain on all other epics

If you seldom use the phone for anything, the proportion of power used by the screen goes down, and so does total battery drain. Then you can brag that you got 60 + hours.

He still had about 4.5 hours of screen on time which is pretty damn good if you ask me. In my daily use I get around 13 hours of battery with a screen on time of about 2 hours, if I'm reading a book using kindle I get 9 or 10 hours with about 3 hours of screen on time.....so he has a higher screen on time than me and still gets like 2x more battery than me (I've seen his other screenshots) on average

Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
i also don't know where people are getting 4.5 hours of screen on time from the screenshot. It's not 11% of the total battery time on. It's 11% of the batteries overall use. It doesn't really have anything to do with the total time unplugged. Some fuzzy math going on heh.
I was at 42% battery when I just plugged in my phone tonight so it's charged up for work tomorrow.
It's not that hard to get these kind of numbers with light use.
@styckx:
How come yours saya "Unplugged for" instead of "Since unplugged"? Not saying its fake or anything, just never seen that before lol
Sent from my Epic 4G using XDA app.
Because in the SS it's charging and changes to "unplugged for". It saves the amount of time it was last unplugged for. If I unplugged it then it will say "Since unplugged" and reset the timer.
Yeah, not shopped, I'm not looking to score e-cred over cell phone screenshots.
I use my device so much my display & voice calls generally wear down battery in 6 hrs tops. used to be 10-12 but since di18 it sucks .. might be both updates idk. I'm anticipating some good reads to learn up on flashing & such so maybe ill be able 2 get better life. my browser speeds suck
Looks like a Day or Two of Airplane mode,
Im rooted and tweaked and get about 20 good hours of use-able time

OP are you using task killers? Don't. It takes up more battery for your Nexus S to re-start those apps than it does to manage them on its own.

a day and a half?? howd you pull that off? im usually charging about 10-14 hours thorough heavy use.
agree with everyone else, give it a few days.
I used some advice i found the said kill battery, charge full, kill battery, charge full, kill, charge, then use it. Charge it while it is off during that time.
First couple of charges, the battery would die after about 5-6 hours of constant "messing around" with the phone. Now it seems like it'll last a good time.
Im completely stock as well.

I dont know. I don't really game on it so maybe thats it, but I am surfing the web constantly. When I go out I turn wifi off...thats about it. Oh and the only widget I am running is a clock and the weather for the clock is set to refresh every 3 hours "simi clock" is what its called.

Like everyone else said you really need to give it some time to break in.
My first day with the Nexus the battery was dying as I left work (roughly 9 hours off the charger).
After owning the phone for about a month now it's changed dramatically.
It lasts well through the entire day, every day. Before I go to bed it's usually sitting around...
70-80% LIGHT use.
50% Moderate use
35-40% Heavy use. (Note: I don't play games, Heavy use to me is multiple short calls, many emails, many texts, IM)
I've never actually had the phone die on me.
I'm using CM7 (Latest Nightly) and the Netarchy CFS Kernel (default settings with the exception of VooDoo Color tweaks)
I don't use Juice Defender. Phone sits on 3G most of the day at the office, at home it sits on WiFi with the WiFi sleep policy set to never. (Wifi uses much less power then 3G, if you have WiFi, USE IT! and set sleep policy to never so WiFi stays on constantly instead of switching back to 3G when the phone is idle)
Do use a task manager but it didn't seem to make a huge difference.
Aside from letting your battery calibrate, you should try out juice defender. I know alot of people might scoff at a such an application but I've experienced over a two fold increase in battery life using said application. However I am running an undervolted netarchy 1.3.4 kernel with Oxygen, but said increase in battery life is with the same configuration.
Yeah it takes around a week to break in the battery. My battery life is pretty awesome. I usually charge it every other day now. It lasts a long time.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
Guys... battery break in isn't gonna change his usage from 4 hrs to 12 hrs. No battery break-in does that.
In all these cases I suggest looking at battery info in the OS itself to see if something kept the phone awake or whatever.
Sure heavy use in your first few days will always take a huge toll on battery. Calibration shouldn't totally throw off your battery life down to 4 hours either.
You guys who say heavy use, can you quantify that?
talk time per day?
texts per day?
roaming?
4g?
how many emails sent/received per day?
time on internet?
/shameless plug
try battery tweak in dev forums... i posted it in both of them

I'm in the same boat as you. Just got my Nexus S 4G on three days ago and the battery dies QUICKLY. The first day it died in 5 hours (with normal use and 4G off). By the time I unplug it and get to work, which is only a 20 minute drive, it's already down to 93%. I'm hoping everyone else is right in saying that the battery just has to be worked in a little.
I have 8 hours on battery right now with about 40% remaining in day 2 of my Nexus' usage. I made about 6 phone calls, sent out about 20 text messages, browsed the internet while waiting for a job interview and played Plants V Zombies when I was taking a dump.
I really only expect it to improve from here.
Out of curiousity, does anyone here have their "Use Wireless Networks" checked under the "Location and Security" settings (where it uses your 3G)? I have this enabled and I know this will drain my battery, but I wonder how much? The only app I have that updates my location while the screen is off is the stock News and Weather app (which only updates every 6 hours, a bug that automatically turns itself back on if you reset your phone). How much collection would Google do other than that?
Also, the other thing I have enabled is my Exchange set to push through the default Email app. However, this never really shows up on the battery usage app, so is push STILL killing the battery a lot through the stock app?
I'm just trying to see how people can get two days with 50% left after work (if just on 3G). On WIFI, MAYBE, but def not on 3G......
I flashed myns synergy rom a couple of weeks ago and have been getting decent battery life. Today my battery life is blowing me away. Going on 11 1/2 hours since being unplugged with my normal usage and still have 22% battery left. Not heavy use by any means but moderate at least. There's a great battery guide in the Q/A section, all kinds of tricks. Might find the guide to kernels there too, another way to drastically improve battery life. The new GB kernel sprint released is garbage, try netarcy-toast "brand" kernels
No where near CM7's battery life, but still very much a daily driver. I usually plugged up at around 40% battery after at least 12 hours usage.
Pretty decent for a Sense rom.
I've had my Evo unplugged for the last 2 days and still sitting at 43%. This is with sending about 60 texts, facebooked, got on frostwire for a bit, made like 12 calls, played a couple of rounds of Angry Birds and been on wifi about 95 percent of the time. Never has this happened with other roms. And I have tried a lot. Only thing disabled was 4G(none in my area)
Unplugged Sunday at about 2pm, it's now Tues at noon, I'm still at 49%.
Light to moderate usage since then, about 200 texts, a few short phone calls, and about two hours combined of facebook and twitter. VERY good life for 2 days worth of usage.
I just recently switched over from CM7 to Synergy RC1... I loved when I went away from Sense to AOSP and was reluctant to switch back. But very pleased and battery life I can confirm is excellent for me as well. My only gripe now is that I'm getting the darn unread email count showing up on my home screen icons even though there is no unread emails. I have found online that it is a known issue and mostly seen in 2.3.3? Can anyone confirm that?
Thanks!
I have tried several sense 2.1+3.0 roms, Virus Kingdom revolution, and mik g I have never been more happy than once I began using Synergy. Heck I even devoted a whole post on Google+ about it. Very stable and my battery is ridiculous. I took my phone off the charger at 6:30 am cdt its now 12:15 pm and I'm at 78%. That's with heavy usage. Great job devs.

When I first flashed I was goeeting okay battery life, the past few days has blown me away. I am used to seeing my battery drop like mad...but it does not do that anymore. I did nothing that I have not done on other ROMs, it just seems to work better after being on the phone a couple of weeks. This will be my ROM for quite some time now!
I'm really trying to get to the bottom of this display usage issue. My display usage stays extremely high compared to everything else. The more I use the phone, the higher it goes. Say if I use the phone a lot, it will be around 90%. If I barely touch the phone, it will go down to 50% but it's still a LOT higher than everything else. And it drains the hell out of my battery. If I barely use it I can get maybe 12 hours at most. If I do use it, I'll be lucky to get 7-8 hours.
It starting happening to me on MikFroyo but it didn't use to do it before. And now I'm noticing the same thing with Synergy. This is driving me nuts because it's keeping me from using my two favorite roms as a daily. I'll post three pictures. One is what my battery life/usage used to look like, one on MikFroyo 4.62, and one on Synergy RC1. I would really appreciate any insight to this.
Edit: It's only these two roms (that I've tried at least) that gives me this issue, and I think MikG if I can remember correctly. CM, Salvage-Mod, and a few other older Sense roms do not cause it.
This is with MikG 1.5, with my usual fairly heavy use.
AMAZING battery life, and 100% stable in my experience.
I have tried many, many ROMs and this one beats all.

let me start by saying that i used to think the same way your thinking untill one of the guys on the synergy post broke it down for me. it's simple, you keep thinking that the display% is an issue but it's only a number and it doesnt represent your actual battery drain. if you hardly use your phone, lets say u make a couple of calls, check some mail and browse the web. well the percentage is correct, your display was on longer than any other application. so it's going to be higher no question. the real question is are you getting good battery life or not? i'm on synergy RLC1 and after some suggestions that i upgrade my PRL, PRi, and wimax. which i did, now im getting great battery life even though my display percentage is still the highest application.

That is only the case if it's maybe a little higher than the rest of the things. It's a percentage of what has used the battery. When the display is at 90% and everything else is at 3% or less, there is a problem. And no, I am getting HORRIBLE battery life. Like I explained, on ROMs that don't have the extremely high display usage I can get 20-30 hours on one charge. The way the battery drains when I'm using it is extremely noticeable. The picture I posted that has been on for 14 hours with 48% left, that's how my battery usage should look. Granted I hadn't used the phone as much as normal that day, it still would be around the range of everything else.

ok, may i suggest that you upgrade all PRI, PRL, wimax etc.. you know all that stuff and give it 2 days to see if that helps. it made a major difference for me..
I thought I would throw this out there just because I found it quite amazing after a year of tweaking the vibrant. I just decided to swap back from Simply Honey to a 2.2x rom because I was having issues with reboots while on the phone. I had been using Bi-Winning prior to installing SH-3.9 so I went back to that but this time I installed the Bali v1.8.8UV kernel after reading some tips. I'm getting 48 hour battery life on moderate use where I was getting 18-20 before. This Bali kernel is something else. I think this setup is a keeper.
you just put on bi-winning and bali or did you undervolt as well? settings would be great cause with a 48 hour battery thats enough to get me to go back to froyo haha especially now that netflix is on froyo as well

I just put bi-winning on it, rebooted, put bali on it. I'm trying to think of anything else I did but I can't. I installed this combo friday night and I thought it was a fluke or I had forgot that I had plugged it up sometime over the weekend when I woke up monday morning with 25% battery. I made it from tuesday morning @ 7:00 until just now with 40% left. I Just plugged it up and I'm going to make an effort to actually benchmark it this time as I don't believe it either. I also just put the same combo on my wife's vibrant to see what kind of resultes it gets.
Am I subconsciously plugging my phone into the charger?
Yep, I get similar results. Currently I'm on ZenDroid 2.0.1 with Bali 1.8.8UV and I'm sitting at 35% remaining and 48 hours since unplugged. Light-moderate use I guess but with some gaming, lots of texts, several 15-20min calls, and wifi on 24/7.
ECOTOX's DragonMODz ULP kernel performs very much the same as well. I have a hard time picking between the two.

wow thats awesome, just checked out bi-winning and there are some decent themes as well. So this is with data and sync on as well?
I'm currently running on Asgard 3.1.2 (Same devs, right?) and it's running awesome.
Thought I'd upgrade to Bi-Winning 3.0 on my Vibrant.
I'm kind of new to this.. so since I'm on Asgard running the Bullet Kernel, all I have to do is flash Bi-Winning via. Odin3, right? If so, will I lose any of my apps/data?

Indeed. Full Google account sync and Facebook once daily. Data is on and using KB5 modem.
Oh and I've also started using the Screen Filter app to reduce screen brightness even more than the android minimum and it seems to be helping a lot as well. Check it out.

Just wanted to add a testimonial to the OP since I'm running exactly the same thing. Just Bi-Winning and Bali 1.8.8UV, it already comes undervolted by -25 I believe and I'm getting similar results on battery life. Kernel and ROM go very well together and it's quick, responsive and very very smooth. I'm using it with ADW EX launcher by the way.
flashed both and so far so good, battery is a little better but nothing as significant as 48 hours, do I have to wait a day or 2 to let it settle in first? Cause I know when i was on cm7 they said let bali run for a day or 2 then after that youll notice the difference
No pics, no proof
Anyone of yall use GPS at all or just moderate use....
The stock battery will not last with more than 2.5 hours (+/-) of Display use, no matter how you slice it.

Well, that's just plain wrong. I've been gaming through multiple episodes of "The Good Wife" with my family and my battery is down maybe 20%.
Now, 2 1/2 hours of an all white background on maximum brightness might kill your battery (flashlight apps), but not typical use.

I don't know exactly what "gaming through multiple episodes" means but a screen is a screen. There's no software affects the display's energy use. Like I said, the +/- depends on your brightness settings and exactly what you display on your screen. I challenge you to show me battery usage screen shot with more than 2.5 hr of display on time on a single charge (with stock battery). I don't doubt you can push 48hrs on a single charge, but chances are, the display on time is less than 3 hours
Does anybody have some screenies to prove it?

I have the exact same setup and my battery life is nowhere near as good. And this is just with data on, no bluetooth, wifi, gps, sync, etc.
Echoing the sentiments of others... Seeing is believing screen shots guys. Thanks

Well, you're in luck! I'm breaking in a new 1700mah battery and want to drain it down to 20% anyway. I'll do so with the screen on my default homepage instead of using the flashlight app. I'll run a stopwatch app in the background and get you some numbers. If you're right, I'll eat my hat!
Then again, since you said +/-, even if it lasts 72 hours, you're still right. It's just 2.5hrs +/- 69.5 hours
I'm the OP and for the last two days my battery has not been lasting nearly as long. Of course I have gone for light/moderate use to heavy use but also I'm seeing it chew through more battery when idle. I'm not sure what has changed to make this happen. I've kept wifi off. I don't think this had anything to do with it but it seemed to start using more battery as soon as I installed the google maps update but the battery profiler doesn't say anything about maps. Oh well...
Well, after 2hr30min, my battery is at 84%. Sure, it's a new battery, and the 84% is probably a little inaccurate, but I haven't stopped the test, so we'll see where it goes from there. Wifi, Bluetooth, and Data are on as well as several widgets on my homepage. I haven't done much with it except keep the screen on indefinitely and send/receive a few texts.
Anyway, the proof is in the pudding. Mmm... pudding...
So I've been using this phone since 5am (its almost 2pm now), making and receiving phone calls for the last 3 hours, using the internet while in calls (some people are boring to talk to), playing games, and listening to music off and on for a while, and I'm at 74%.
Now, to some people who really tweak their phones, this probably doesn't mean anything to them. However, I have had an Evo 3D, Droid Razr OG, and Galaxy Nexus, all of which I completely tweaked, and wasn't getting this battery life. I am rooted with a stock rom, but my hatred for TouchWiz forced me to use Apex Launcher. Other than that, no modifications at all, no flashed kernels, nothing.
I've only had this phone for a little over 24hrs, so I'm wondering, with all the reviews complaining about battery life, and even threads in various forums with users complaining about battery life, is this normal? Is the battery life great at the beginning then gradually gets worse? Or is it truly dependent on the use I give it? I'm in an HSPA+ zone at my house, but I have LTE when I actually go into town. Any ideas?
It seems like there is some debate on whether there are some people getting "good batteries" and some people getting "bad batteries". I know that my wife and I are both seeing what I'd call phenomenal battery life, and that's with no root, just disabling a few apps, and we're leaving everything except Bluetooth on all the time (and making sure it's not trying to find an LTE signal, since there is none here)... so clearly we got "good" batteries. I also ensure we don't have any rogue apps, or things running in the background that we don't really want there, but that's the extent of "tweaking" I've done. But, like I said, there's definitely reports of people seeing bad battery life, so not sure what the deal is.
that's not normal...I took mine off the charger at 7 a.m., used it for about 45 minutes worth of phone calls and by 11:30 I was down to under 70%.
My battery life sucks. No where near that. My phone has been unplugged for 2.5 hours and I'm down to 60. That sucks.
I only got into this phone because of the battery life. I may switch out. I'm not getting anywhere near the advertised life

Thanks for rubbing it in. I'm lucky to get 16hrs or moderate usage. I saw on amazon there's a three pack of batteries. Maybe I'll try those and get lucky
I'm not getting any where near that wither going in for a replacement battery soon, that and I just ordered a couple spares.

LTE makes a huge difference.
I am getting better battery life after uninstalled Chrome. But since I live and work within an LTE area, it's still not phenomenal.

Just in case. Standy used to take a toll on my other phones, particularly the Razr (which had horrible battery life, easily charged twice to three times a day), but not so much here.

How much screen-on time? Means nothing without at least that number to compare against.

I don't know man. I would definitely send it in for a replacement. Good battery life can't be good.

Honestly, not much. I had been on the phone for about three hours so the screen was mostly off during that time. About an hour or so of screen time.

So based on what you said, in 9 hours you used 26% of the battery. This would mean that the 2100mAh battery was sustained at an average of 61mA over the course of your usage. This seems almost impossible considering what type of use you put the phone through, Unless you phone is idling at under 20mA (mine is around 30-50) your battery stats might be inaccurate. If you continue using your battery at this rate and usage it should last you 34-35 hours with what looks like heavy use. You can use battery monitor widget from the play store to view your current usage and see what type of power your phone is actually consuming, as it is directly related to your battery life.

Your argument is completely valid which is why I posted this thread to begin with. I wiped battery stats and all that, so it might be giving me an inaccurate reading as I pretty much never let my phones die, although I read in some places that wiping battery stats makes no difference at all and is basically useless. I'll download the app and let it run and I'll post back. I did post a screenshot with the time I was on battery and the battery percentage that was left, but as mentioned before, since most of the actual usage was phone calls, I didn't have the screen on that much.
I've had mine for about two weeks and I consider my usage to be medium-high a lot of the time. I can't complain with these results. I'm completely stock, no root, no apps disabled.
As far as Chrome, I don't know what it does but I've read in other threads that it does drain battery.

I kept seeing Chrome use CPU even when I had all the tabs closed. Quick internet search revealed several threads about it draining battery so I decided to uninstall it until it gets out of beta.
However, my battery drained dead over night again. I did hear my notification go off prior to bed. I am now thinking the led is killing my battery so I turned off just now for notifications.

If people are having very bad battery issues it's due to how the phone is set up and syncing. Sure there are the super rare cases where the phone is actually broken in some way.
S3 has the best battery life stock behind the razr maxx on Vzw at least.
Any good current apps like "current widget"?
