I searched around and couldn't get a clear answer. I'm a noob at anything command prompt/terminal related.
I was screwing around with adb last night after figuring out that I can remove program .apks with the rm <com.whatever.program> command. I got a little trigger happy and removed things that I don't use, just to test it out. I made a nandroid backup before I started. The phone runs fine, but now the Market won't download anything. It just sits on the Starting download... screen.
One of the .apks I removed was GmailProvider.apk. Whether this is the problem or not, I'd like to reinstall it for practice. I can always nand restore later.
So my question is... How can I use adb push to reinstall an apk?
I tried:
Code:
adb push C:\GmailProvider.apk
adb install C:\GmailProvider.apk
adb install C:\GmailProvider.apk \system\app
And about every variation of the 3, in and out of the adb shell.
It didn't work, and I'm at a loss to do anything else. So does anyone have any suggestions?
EDIT: I think my "\" should be "/". I got this
Code:
BusyBox v1.15.2 <2009-12-02 TIME EST> multi-call binary
Usage: install [-cdDsp] [-o USER] [-g GRP] [-m MODE] [source] dest|directory
Copy files and set attributes
Options:
Then some usage stuff here.
Then I looked at the command prompt and made a face like .
Suggestions?
It might help to say that I'm using EvilEris 2.0.1, Windows 7.
Just reflash your ROM after doing a titanium backup. Easiest fix.
try this after putting GmailProvider.apk in your sdk\tools dir:
Code:
adb remount
adb push GmailProvider.apk /system/app
remount marks the system directory as read/write

Beat me to it. ADB is powerful and pretty cool if you know some good commands, but you can really mess up your phone if you know what I mean. Not mess up like brick (unless you really try) but more like phone won't load gmail now, phone won't get past the htc screen. As long as you have a nandroid backup you SHOULD be fine, the push, pull and rm commands are really the first step of rom building. If you know what files you pushed and rm'd you can make your dream rom.

You do not have to do anything after an adb push.
What rom? Some roms have been modified to the point some htc apps will not work. Addionally a copy of the htcfacebook.apk from an eris build may not work on a sprint based or g1 based roms do to signature variations

I am rooted with the Liberated ROM and using unrevoked tool. I tried sideloading an app I downloaded from my phone's browser and it said the phone was still locked outside of the marketplace apps. Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks
if windows and assuming you have installed the Android SDK, rename the SDK folder to simply c:\android
then run this little batch file (save it via notepad as whateveryouwant.bat), alternatively execute line by line the commands below
cd\android\tools
adb remount
adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db settings.db
echo update secure set value = 1 where name = 'install_non_market_apps';|sqlite3 settings.db
adb push settings.db /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
pause 1
adb reboot
You need to enable sideloading separately. Refer to this post, specifically the section entitled "Also, enable installation of non-Market (untrusted) apps (sideloading)."

NOTES:
You MUST have root access on the phone in order for this to work
You must have the tools directory from the Android SDK installed.
sqlite3 is included in the Android SDK tools, so this would be the best way:
Windows:
Enable USB debugging (settings > applications > development > USB Debugging)
From the command prompt, change to the sdk/tools directory.
adb remount
adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db settings.db
echo update secure set value = 1 where name = 'install_non_market_apps';|sqlite3 settings.db
adb push settings.db /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
Optional test for success:
adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db settings.db
echo select value from secure where name = 'install_non_market_apps';|sqlite3 settings.db
If the last command returns 1, then your change is successful.
Linux/OS X
Enable USB debugging (settings > applications > development > USB Debugging)
From a superuser command prompt, change to the /sdk/tools directory
./adb remount
./adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db settings.db
echo "update secure set value = 1 where name = 'install_non_market_apps';"|./sqlite3 settings.db
./adb push settings.db /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
Optional test for success:
./adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db settings.db
echo "select value from secure where name = 'install_non_market_apps';"|./sqlite3 settings.db
If the last command returns 1, then your change is successful.
Reboot phone and sideloading works. (thanks fluffyarmada)

worked perfectly! thanks for that! i just ran line for line in cmd prompt and i can now sideload just fine on the phone. now, just need to find apps to sideload!!! already installed swype and tried the wifi tether thing, but after that, i dont know what else to load up! i guess its back to more forum searching. but thanks so much!
sorry for the noobish question...
is sideloading the same as installing and running apps from the SD card? and, i have also heard that if you run anything from the SD card, you should go with a Class 6 SD.
im holding off on the root for now... but these are some of the few questions i had in regards to it

No, it is not. That is referred to as apps2sd. That is not currently available on the Aria, and once it is, a class 2 Samsung works just fine.

I have an HTC Aria, rooted with Clockwork, an 003 rom version installed.
The annoying AT&T startup was replaced as stated elsewhere, yet I see the AT&T files it was suppose to delete are still present.
(Debugging in Settings is on, and signature verification is off in Clockwork)
I'm unclear why the AT&T files still remain after running the 003 rom, or how to manually remove them.
More importantly...
I'm confused on what the step by step means are to get my Aria to accept unapproved apps.
Exactly how do I make the modifications you posted to allow non-Market apps to be installed on my Aria?
After installing Adroid SDK, ran Sqlite3.exe, and typed in this on my Windows Vista pc -
sqlite> adb remount (enter)
adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db settings.db (enter)
echo update secure set value = 1 where name = 'install_non_market_apps';|sqlite3 settings.db (enter)
adb push settings.db /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db (enter)
I then x'ed out of Sqlite and rebooted the Aria.
I obviously missed something, because after downloading a non-Market app to the Aria successfully, when I clicked to install it, I'm still getting the same message that it's not allowed.
What do I need to correctly make the code work???
Best solution I could find for installing non market apps. http://forum.androidcentral.com/showthread.php?p=236589#post236589
I've worked on this a few hrs now. I got Clockwork Recovery to work. Figured out HTC Sync was reverting the phone to stock recovery somehow. Removed that though...
Have rerun Unrevoked, and I can get into clockwork. I'm not interested in changing to different ROM now, just removing ATT crap.
When I try sideloading instructions/alternate method for removing ATT stuff, I get an error in cmd:
C:\android\tools>adb remount
remount failed: Operation not permitted
adb devices returns:
List of devices attached:
<myserial#> device
Any ideas? Have I not completed the root access procedure? I thought it was part of the Unrevoked process.

Remember to run all this from within the android-sdk-linux_86/tools directory. For users that have modified their path, adb can be run from anywhere, but these commands won't work properly.
Thanks for the guide! Seems to have worked properly.
Great! The problem was the drive. I had to cd to the device drive (h: in my case) to get it to find the files. Thanks again.
I got the Swype apk, installed it, and it's working perfectly!
Quick question. Does the phone have to be operating in a boot mode via Clockwork OR on and operating normally when you do this. Once connected via USB does it have to be set for Charge only, Sync, or Disk drive when this is done. I know it should be set for USB debugging. My phone is rooted but still has the original ROM. I am getting a permission denied error when I run the adb remount command.

I figured out my problem. The instructions for linux say
Code:
adb push settings.db /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases settings.db
when it should be
Code:
adb push settings.db /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
There was a space, instead of / between databases and settings.db

getting error:
adb remount
remount failed: Operation not permitted
when trying to set the sideloading as mentioned by attn1.
inWindows Vista, after rooting using unrevoked process.
Note that I have both the SU app showing up in All apps on phone and the ClockworkMod and ran adb from the \tools directory.
Anyone know what the problem is?
Since it took me over an hour to finally get this to work, I figured I would make a new post. (That's a long time to just change a 0 to a 1)
If you want to use your stock Rom but are rooted then this is the easiest way to be able to install non-market apps. I take no credit for this as it is from a post from Attn1 (thanks!).
HTC Sync does not have a choice to add apps in the latest version that I have, I don't know if did before, but I could not get it working. We can all thank AT&T
for this!
Put your phone into Recovery mode.
Goto advanced>mount system and mount data.
Make sure your phone is recognized by adb devices in
your Terminal program.
If not you can use adb kill-server then adb start-server
If you're using linux then you need to precede the adb command
with ./adb
Follow the directions below and you will installing non-market apps
in no time.

After 2 days of testing i think i have a clean solution to fix the mobile data drain by setting the preferred network mode to 1 (GSM only). No need to delete or rename anything. Just update the db that is already there .
You need a rooted device for this.
Extract the sqlite3.zip and push to your device with the following commands:
Code:
adb shell mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 /system
adb push sqlite3 /system/bin
adb shell chmod 6755 /system/bin/sqlite3
adb shell
su (to gain root permissions)
sqlite3 /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db 'update secure set value="1" where name="preferred_network_mode"'
reboot
I'll give this a try. Thanks
Edit: Is it possible I can do this on the device without adb? Adb doesn't want to detect my tablet with debugging enabled.

This updates the database configuration setting that causes the phone to not to look for 3G networks only 2G (GSM which includes GPRS and EDGE). I'll let the OP elaborate more, but this config change must reduce the battery usage by causing the phone and telephony services to chill out out a bit when in standy mode.

couldn't describe it better
2g = only poll cell if request is made that needs cell, 3g = poll all the time, which means that if you change to only 2g then it should not check for cell if you are in wifi range.

Just out of curiosity (Yes, I fully acknowledge I should have done something like "select * from secure where name='preferred_network_mode'" beforehand! ) what is the default value of "preferred_network_mode" before this modification sets it to "1"?

I am getting the same error; I also am rooted, running ADB from Windows 7 (and Mac OS X - tried both, same error). I also have latest drivers, and latest ADB.
I get "operation not permited error." Did you have any luck on getting further?
try this instead as a work around:
adb push sqlite3 /sdcard/sqlite3
adb shell
$ su
# mount -o remount,rw /system
# cp /sdcard/sqlite3 /system/bin/sqlite3
# chmod 6755 /system/bin/sqlite3
# sqlite3 /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db 'update secure set value="1" where name="preferred_network_mode"'
# reboot
I've never been able to use root level adb cmnds with this device from outside the adb shell env, I think you need to update the default.prop, but this gets overwritten on reboot, I'm sure there is a way to fix this, and has proabably been discussed in another thread I've been too lazy to go find lol.

Hello XDA Giants of the Modding world I guess I'll start by saying i am a sorta work in progress rather than a noob. i say that for 2 reasons. a) I have converted over here for awhile from (hopefully you call us this) your friends over at modmyobile. i have burned myself out on my good old cliq 2 and have actually surpassed some very well known devs over there on the modding of the mb611. But sadly, that is close to my extent of knowledge; well that and the nook color aka encore and the cliq mb200 a little. and b) when i went into this section (the q & a thread) i got a headache real fast. But i would suppose i belong here to give someone else a headache until i dont have post restrictions. ok, on to my ordeal...
Through here I successfully downgraded and temp rooted howevs my giant devs, i cannot seem to figure out what it is im missing to the last steps. let me try to do specifics here- i followed this - [GUIDE] Downgrade G2 (2.3.X) & DZ (2.3.X) & mT4g (2.3.4) & DHD w/ S-ON to Stock Froyo. i was not able to get the platform tool kit or whatever its called but i found files elsewhere to ride it out andd low and behold i got all the way to Android 2.2.1 and ready to s-off perm root this baby im stuck here-

Yup, this site is awesome! Thanks Garleest for that quick and accurate response so I've checked out a few roms so far and I'm clear on the annoying question "what's the best rom?" So I guess I'll just twist it a little and ask, are there a few that stand out from all these gazillions of choices here that u or anyone would recommend I try out? I might get these names wrong but I am on the darkside cm 7.2 right now. And I tried out (very shortly) ummm, lets see here... darkhorse was one, packable and aospx or something like that... thanks in advance
