hi,
today i tried to "stress test" my g1's battery. everything on, max display brightness, nearly the whole time turned on, running a few apps etc.
and now after 6h 10m it is at 8%. the surprising part of this is that cell standby drains 27% battery life. the second highest consumer is no less surprising, phone idle, 18%. then wifi, display and android os with about 15%.
this seems wrong somehow. is it normal that cell standby consumes so much battery?
i am running cm5.0.7 test1 which i remember to have an issue with battery life. somewhere i read that i only had to turn off the percentage-counter in the status bar (which i did). is the high cell standby consumption related to that? is there maybe another radio version Oo? (using: 2_22_23_02)

I know battery issues have been discussed over and over in this forum, but I have a question that I couldn't find the answer to in this forum.
I have an unlocked rogers x10 that's updated to R2BA020 that I'm using on Fido network, the phone is always roaming because I'm on Fido.
I'm thinking this is why my battery life sucks. I tried everything, task killers, juice defender, dim screen, full discharge.
Does the phone use more juice if it's roaming?
Yes, but it doesn't make a very large difference. If you're worried about constantly roaming, take a look at android, which let's you turn off Amsterdam on 3G.

Have you tried spare parts or something similar to check your battery usage? It lets you see what component is using the most battery. Even the Battery Usage option under Settings->About Phone should tell you where your juice is draining.

If he doesn't want to download spare parts, he could just dial *#*#4636#*#* (did I get that right?) in his dialer to get to the same menus.

I'm still having battery life issues as well on my Rogers x10a.
I was at 100% as of 12:00pm and it's now at 87% 5:00pm.
According to the battery info I've used:
Voice Calls - 30% (10m 35s)
Cell Standby - 28%
Phone Idle - 22%
Display - 11%
Android System - 4%
ADW.Launcher - 3%
3G on, WIFI off, BT off
No idea what is draining my battery so much
I'm on Fido as well, though I don't see a roaming icon anywhere.
Are you sure you're roaming?

2.6%/hr with actual use (not sleeping overnight) is not bad at all. a 4inch screen, 3g connected all the time smartphone will not get great battery life if you actually use it. many people talk about how they get a couple of days or more on a single charge but there is no possible way for this to happen unless you are barely touching your phone. the best i can hope for is a full days use as i use my phone all day and evening.
sometimes an app sits in the background and uses lots of juice, so if you want to make sure that is not happening you might want to do a hard reset and not install any apps for a day and see how battery life it. you can add back apps slowly so that you will be able to tell if one is causing your phone to use too much juice.
the other things you can try is not to use widgets that auto update all the time or try locking your phone to 2g for the day, turning screen brightness down to the lowest level when possible. stuff like that will help. since i updated to the r2 generic rom my battery life has been good enough. i could always use more, but i use my phone too much to expect more.
Thanks I use my phone a lot as well but hearing all these awesome battery life stories had me expecting more. Guess I'll live with what I have.

It drives me nuts too but the reality is that we all use our phones differently so while some people are happy getting two days of use by barely using their phone I just can't do that. I rely on my phone for too many different things, so if I can get through one day I am fine. It was a shock for me initially as I was using a blackberry 9700 and it had a very small screen and long battery life

I took my phone off charge 6 hours ago and I have 79% left as I type.
I did a 5 minute phone call, 10 minutes browsing, 2 minute YouTube video and I turned on WiFi for 30 minutes and Bluetooth for 45 minutes.
I checked the settings and it says:
Display 48%
Standby 18
Phone Idle 13%
Voice call 13%
I've been switching options on and off for the last few weeks that I have x10 and the conclusion is => turn of APN when you don't use it and the battery last for 3 days. Only problem I can think of is mail push but you can always check mail every 30min. There is this "APN on/off" widget that makes switching APN on and off pretty easy so there shouldn't be too much problems.
Doesnt make a difference here.. wifi and 3g cane my battery!!

Update:
I removed JuiceDefender, and I installed advanced task killer, and APN on/off widget and the battery life is much better now. I turn data off when I'm not using the phone and I kill tasks about 3-4 times a day. The screen is dimmed to 15%.
As per Android system info:
Up time: 1 days, 3 hours, 1 minutes, 59 seconds
Up time (without sleep): 0 days, 4 hours, 23 minutes, 8 seconds
17 % battery life left
I checked the settings and it says:
Display 40% (time on 2h 33m 58s)
Standby 29%
Phone Idle 22%
Wifi 4%
Android System 3%
Broswer 2%
Quick question for advanced users, I noticed that Android sys info says up time without sleep is just over 4 huors while the phone settings says 2h 33m, any idea which one is more accurate? I'm assuming up time without sleep = time screen is on.
Switch off GPS. I read about it and how it improved batteries. Bloody true. Its great advice.

Time without sleep = time screen is on
IF nothing isn't keeping the phone awake.
The phone setting says 2h 33m because it counts the time that the phone was asleep AND the screen was off.
The real percentage is the one Android sys info gives you.
It is rather normal for the phone to have slightly more awake time that screen on time, as some applications work even when the screen is off (push Gmail, the clock, some widget etc...).
As long as your wake time is not 100%, you're just fine.

Thanks for the info. Good to know that Android sys info is accurate, almost 5 hours of up time is amazing.
I had my phone charged last night and it died before i woke up in the morning. Now i just finished my charge almost 1 hour and 20 minutes ago, and its already 90 percent. And i have nothing but gtalk running, and a fresh install. Is this possible its a battery problem?
Did you check your battery use in the settings menu under phone status? It breaks down what used all your charge. If you already hooked it up and charged it full, it might be too late to tell since it wipes the last charge's results off.
Keep an eye on that and see if there is something in that list killing your battery more than normal. If everything in there looks ok, it's possible your battery is bad.
1hour 40 min since uplugged
Display 43% 8min
Cell Standby 28% 1h 38min
Phone Idle 19% 1h 30min
And now its 89 percent

That seems normal.
Maybe you have the problem where an SMS is received and the screen stay on? Some people were reporting that problem in another thread. That would definitely kill your battery if you received a message sometime during the night.
I'm at:
Display: 52% 37min
Cell Standby 15% 3hr
Beautiful Widgets 13%
Phone Idle 13% 2hr20min
Bah that sucks, is there a fix for that sms thing? I havent seem it once yet. So basically 10 percent in 2 hours of no use is normal? I thought this phone could be on idle for days. eh.

Sorry, I missed the part where you stated the battery is at 89%...
My phone, on the first charge, lasted 28 hours with moderate to heavy usage. It should last a lot longer if it's just in standby.
Do you think i should go tomorrow to get my battery replaced?

How long have you had your phone? I'd give it a few days of fully charging/discharging to break in the battery and go from there. But the phone should definitely last you at least all day with moderate use.
I have had it since the night of the 18th. Well i mean i can try that, but it feels like its not the case. I dont know... bah
Display 57%
Cell Standby 14%
Phone Idle 9%
Voice Calls 8%

Of course it doesn't talk about the 30minutes of Wifi, the 30 or so minutes of watching some videos. Nor does it address surfing the net for around 60minutes and various emails through out the day.
Uptime 17:26:38
Battery 32%
Last night around this same time I had around 20%.
So it does seem to be improving a bit. Of course I wont know until tomorrow's usage.
I unplugged it around 6am and now its 11:37pm. So its lasting as long as I have so far. When I hit the sack I'll plug it in and go for it again tomorrow. As long as it has power when I go to bed then we will get a long just fine.

Remove widgets, lower your brightness, turn off GPS, turn off WiFi, set your notifications to a later time, and close unused running programs and see if that helps.
Personally if I'm below 75% and I have access to a charger, I just keep it plugged in to charge.
I had a fresh reinstall last night, and i lost 32 percent battery from 11pm to 10am without using the phone but for maybe 5 text messages.
I dont think this is normal...

+1.... Welcome to the inconsistencies of Android.
- Widgets off
- GPS in the task bar on. It only fires it up when it needs it anyways
- Screen Brightness I don't know I think its set to around 17-25% or so
- I turn off all that haptic feedback nonsense
- 3G off
- Wifi off
- Regular background
- I'm not running exchange or anything fancy that constantly looks for email, good old Gmail.
At least thats what I have my phone set up for. "What do you mean you don't have 3G on. Edge is so slow" Yeah its so useful when your phone is laying there doing nothing.
Same i have all that crap turned off. But i get bad battery times. Im thinking of returning and getting my battery replaced today. It wont hurt
Install Battery Graph and see how fast your battery drains at certain time intervals. You can probably tell if it's an app or not causing the problem if you see a big drop in a short time interval.
I was having the same issues for the first three day however I spent A LOT of time playing and tweaking as this is my first Andriod... I would unplug it at 6am and by 8am (with little to no use) I was down to about 65% but I was still thinking about replacing it.
I did the GPS Update and it seems to have helped a TON... Dunno what the coloration is (maybe the bad GPS signal was constantly looking and draining the battery) but it seems to really help.
Hope this helps some.
What is the GPS Update? You mean the fix in the Development section?
Another HD user here on a mission to maximise battery life!
I think you have to accept that whatever features you want to use will take a big chunk of battery when actually using the device especially with this screen, so looking at minimising the battery drain while the phone is in standby which it is for me the vast majority of the time.
So far I have turned off any wireless service except cell phone and use push email on a couple of email accounts that are not particularly busy. Other apps I use I have set to only sync when I choose it and there are only system processes left running.
By removing and disabling various apps and functions I have managed to get my CPU utilisation down to around 0.7% on average when in standby. Left alone my battery life drops by about 5% per hour meaning if I do nothing with the phone I get about 20 hours of standby max.
Has anyone else looked at this and managed to get a lower standby CPU utilisation?
I'm using Systempanel to monitor the process history.
Hello
If you root your phone either temp or perm then you can use Set Cpu. With this you can push the processor speed right down when screen off. Using this my battery only drains 1-2% per hour while on standby.
Great tip. Thanks very much. I shall give it a try
5% drained in standby, wifi off, mobile net off? That sounds like something else is eating it. Dont you have network signal quality problems? I used to have such drainage when the antenna was covered, poor signal. Then in battery usage, cell standby rocketed up. If i take care that antenna is not covered this goes away. This on htc z. I could run the phone in standby for about five or six days. (No wifi, no net, just voice).

I am experiencing extremely bad battery drain while my hd2 is off. I have a brand new factory battery, and am running a gingerbread edition of Nandroid. Cell standby seams to be the culprit. My drains about 15 percent an hour when left in normal mode, a. k. a. not air plain or data disabled mode. When I enable air plain mode, the standby usage decreases to 2%. I live in an area that t-mobile rates as excellent and is partially covered by their 4g network. what can I do beside leaving my phone in air plain mode (defeating the point of a phone, because you won't know when people call or text you) to actually get usable battery life?
The attached picture is after a standard day where the phone was asleep for the majority of the time.
Your rom ?
you can try adjust the brightness, switch to 2g,disable data in background.
Try downloading battery monitor widget to find your mah drain. Mine battery usage is usually 60% display
