I've been tether flawlessly for about a week now. Today I no success and can't figure out what's wrong. When I activate barnacle I get an error that reads: Could not set ad hoc mode eth0 Invalid argument. And there's another one that reads could not set ad hoc mode. Any ideas on how to fix this?
I did the settings change days ago, I tried the new WiFi tether and its giving me the same ad hoc error.
It work now for some reason. Does anyone remember the code to enter into the dialer to get to the phones settings?
Code?
*#*#1472365#*#*
Is this the code you're asking for?
Yup, thank u sir

Has anyone been able to get any of the root Wifi tethering apps to work with the Droid X?
I used z4root to root my Droid X running Android 2.2.1, and I tried the "Wireless Tether" and "Barnacle Wifi Tether" apps, but neither seems to work for me. They both run, and create a wireless network I can detect from a laptop, but when I try to connect, I'm able to connect briefly but then immediately get disconnected. I've tried it with and without encryption enabled, and changing channel, but nothing seems to work.
The comments for both apps seem to show hit-or-miss results, with some people like me having no luck, while it works perfectly for others. Is there something I'm missing?
I have been using Wireless tether since 2.1 and never have had issues. The latest version of Wireless tether now offers access point instead of peer to peer, very nice. What OS on the laptop?
I've tried it with two laptops running Ubuntu 10.04. Both laptops report the wireless network is "Ad hoc". With encryption disabled, they can connect briefly, but then get disconnected. With encryption enabled, and using WEP (Passphrase), they can't connect at all, reporting "bad password".
Have you installed the newest version of Wireless tether? The newest version shows as an access point not ad hoc anymore. When I run it.
Also I am running 2.3.340 on my X.
I just switched Linux network management daemons, and now I'm able to tether. I had been using Wicd, which apparently has a known bug about not being able to properly connect to ad hoc networks. I switched to Network Manager, and now I'm was able to connect.
I just updated Wifi Tether yesterday, and it was still showing as ad hoc.
Hmm mine is showing up as Infrastructure I updated today. Looks to be 2.0.6 according to the about screen.
I just got my A7 a few days ago. I did the elocity firmware, the latest dexter mod and the adhoc fix.
1. I cannot get the vpn to work. I am trying to get it to connect to my Cisco ASA at work and no matter if I try ip or dns name, it fails immediately. The connection never leaves the A7.
2. I rooted my Motorola Droid and put Barnacle on it. My laptop can wifi tether to the adhoc network off the phone with no problems. My A7 can see the adhoc, tries to obtain ip address over and over and just doesn't connect. It doesn't matter if I use proper wep or non matching wep key, same results. This is frustrating.
I have re wiped, re firmwared, re dextered several times. Out of ideas. Going on vacation i a few weeks and need to be able to tether.
Help!!!!
hi I had to do this to my samsung intercept running barnacle to make it connect. mabey it will help you.
http://androidforums.com/samsung-intercept-sprint/194068-barnacle-wont-run.html
I use the legacy version of barnacle. I think its available on authors site if not on market
scroll down page a little to see instructions for the fix in the link
Try installing googles wifi tether and run it without wep or wpa and see if you can connect that way.If you can connect then enable the Access control and set a ringtone to let you know when there is a connection, that way you can set it up to where you are the only one that can use it and know if there are any other connections besides you. Go to the link below to get the latest download and be sure to read up on it.This is what I use all the time with 0 problems. If you have any problems with it pm me and I will try to help you with it as much as I can.

Update
I did as suggested with both Barnacle and Google Wifi Tethering with wep turned off. And it works. Why is that? If I create a wep key in either Barnacle as ascii or hex, it doesn't work whether I use ascii or hex equivalent on the eLocity. With the Wifi Tethering app, it only has ascii option and still no luck. Until a new Dexter comes out that may fix this problem (at least for me), I will probably just use Barnacle with max 3 connections and by default new clients gets no nat. I will manually allow nat from the phone to control access.
What sucks is I cannot use my buddy's jail broken iphone for wifi tethering either. My velocity has the same problem passing passwords to ad-hoc networks.
As far as Ive read and been told Android will not connect with wep but what you said you were going to do will work just fine, that's basically what I do,but when Im going to be in one place for a while I will use Google's wired usb connection (link below) to connect to my laptop and then just share its internet connection with other laptops, phones, game systems etc.Either way I think its a good idea to have both the wireless and wired installed just in case and there free so what the hell.
I hope some of this will help you out. Good luck and have a good vacation.

you need a wlantest.apk of FW you are using
Have you ever used this network with another device before? And worked it? This may be that problem.. WiFi may be protected by MAC filter. Lets say if it IS protected with this filter, you have to configure your WiFi router and add MAC adress of your phone into it. If it isn't, try another ROM or try to do something with your router.
dont have any idea about MC filter but other phones (nokia 5800,95) & also samsung wave of worth Rs.7500/- is also working with it ,my lapy is also works with it plz guys help me............. http://media.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/mad.gif

this is a problem with the way your router gives ip to device
go in your router settings and reset all
then imput a new pass key
then it will work
i had problem with my ps3 haveing the same ip as my phone so when boath where online my phone no work online
a simple router reset to default and a new pass key fixed all problems
hey its my college wifi i can't edit it... is their some other way??????
If it is with what the craigboro guy said, you could use a laptop or another android device to scan the network (check the market, net scan or something) to scan the IP addresses on the network and then in advanced settings give your phone an IP that isn't being used, not ideal but hey, you're asking in the G3 section, not the g5 section, so you are bound to get general answers
I just bought a Rogers arc and everything is great so far, except the wifi. For whatever reason when i try to connect to my home network, although it recognizes it and connects i get a "limited connectivity" which effectively does not allow me to use wifi at all. ive tryed rebooting the phone and reseting my router (which is a D-link DI-524.) any help would be appreciated.
you could go in the router settings and register the phones mac address to a ip of your choice. it should do the trick i think...
I finally figured out what the problem was, i had to update the firmware on the router and then manually add the MAC address like dogggie said and after a reboot voila!
I don't want to make another thread since my problem is similar to this one. So in my school there is a hiden Wi-FI network and it has got a password, but we know Name and Password, so we can connect to Wi-Fi. But here is the thing: My friend who has SGS2 connect's without any problems, but everytime I try to connect to Wi-FI i get "Limited Connectivity" mesage. Is there any way to fix this? Can I somehow get Gateway and Netmask from router, so I can set static IP on my phone or sometheing like that?
Thanks for answers.

Zanimivo, na kero šolo hodš?
I have the same problem. Hidden Wi-Fi in school, limited connectivity. Works for some people, doesn't for most.
I have used CM7 for some time and the Wi-Fi worked with it, but I flashed the stock ROM back and now, again, it doesn't work.
Oo, another one form Slovenia Lep pozdrav. Šola je pa TŠC Kranj.
It also worked for me when I was testing Offical Beta ICS, but now I am back on stock 2.3.4 and all I can get is limited conectivity

Same school.
Today it works. I have just manual set gateway, DNS servers, netmask and my own IP.
Cool. Mind sharing the values you used?
Hey guys,
Hopeing someone has some usefully information. I've been looking online and the forums for any help but haven't been able to find any answers that I'm looking for in reguards to the built in Wi-fi hotpsot for andriod 2.2.1 stock release. I use my hotspot at work a lot and was wondering if anyone knows of any ways to disconnected or premanently block someone off of my network. The hotspot doesn't seem to have any way of booting someone off of of my network outside of setting it to onle 1 connection available and hoping some **** doesn't beat me to the connection while my computer connects. Theres someone in the office that has their phone to just simply connect to any network I'm guessing and he continues to latch on to my hotspot even though its WPA encrypted. If anyone has any useful info or can recommend a program to use with an un-rooted phone I would be very thankful.
Thanks guys!
Does anyone have any info that can help me?
If your hotspot is encrypted, he can't use it. He can try to connect to it, but he won't get his network working.
And you can use the "Manage users" feature of the hotspot in Sense, and enable MAC address confirmation for each user - so he won't even get allowed to connect.
Well thats the thing, I've been looking through the manage users option and it only gives me the Mac address of the **** trying to connect to my network. It doesn't give me the option to do anything except "hers their mac and their ip" and most of the time it just shows "ip: not available" THere are only 2 options that I see and thats "Allowed users only" and "Max. Connections" Where in sense would my MAC filter option be available?
usb tether?
Before turning on the hot spot, go to portable wifi hotspot settings. There you can set it to where you need a password to connect to your network.
I use wep security. You can put whatever password you want.
