hi i have windows 7 and each time i connect my htc hd2 on my win7 laptop in diskdrive mode rather than active sync, the computer makes the usb noise, but no drive or any icon shows up on my computer, active sync works perfect and the mode also works on my xp pc
when you open my computer when the phone is in hard driver mode, don't forget the drive doesn't show up in the same area of the window as when it is in active sync mode, it shows up as "local drive" if I remember correctly. I have a card reader and the sd card shows up by them in dd mode, but right down at the bottom in as mode.
It might be that the drive letter assigned for the Phone is taken by some other USB/Network drive, and windows just does not know what to do.
Windows assigns the first available drive letter to the device the first time you connect the device, and remembers what letter was assigned to this device.
If you connect the device again, it would get the same drive letter.
But - if you disconnect the drive, and connect another device, the new device might not get this (same) drive letter, and when you connect the phone, it's drive letter is occupied and windows gives up.
What to do ?
(I dont know windows 7, but - on Windows XP it goes like this
Click Start->Settings->ControlPanel
Double Click AdministrativeTools
Double Click Computer Management
On the left tree view - select "Disk Management"
See the list of elements
Look For a volume without a letter
Right click this drive and select "Change Drive Letter"
(if you get a "list" of drive letters that is not selectable drop-down list)Click "Change"
Select one of the unassigned drive letters
---- click OK
---- Click OK (again)
Close Computer management
See if you have the new drive under "My computer"
Hi, when you are in ActiveSync mode do you also get your phone loaded as a Portable Device giving you seperate access to the Device storage and your Storage card? I think that Som3one might be correct as I've had device issues in the past (not with Windows 7 yet though) related to removable drive mapping. I actually prefer ActivSync mode as all storage is shown in Windows 7 whilst only the SD card is shown in Disk mode.

just to see if it is recognized there (preferably with XP)

On you laptop, does the little thingy appear on the right-hand of the bottom task bar so that you can eject the drive with a right click? If the thingy ain't there, the drive ain't there.

there should be an option to directly upload to Facebook -- like they have with youtube.

If it is mac os you need to put the phone's usb in debug mode. You can do this from adjustments, applications, development.

im using windows 7 64 bit
do I still need to put it into debug mode?
basically i want to know the steps/directions on how to a) attach my phone with the USB
and then b) to go through my phones files and select the stuff I want to download to my pc
why is it so hard for me? it's super frustrating
I honestly don't think it should be this difficult...
when you go to mass storage you must still mount
follow the steps below hope it helps
1. plug usb in
2. select mass storage
3. pull the menu down and click on usb connected then mount
4. open the removable disk (your phone)
5. go to the folder with the files you want to copy
6. either copy paste if u want the files still on the phone or move to a new location on your computer
( camera pictures are in my DCIM folder then camera other files u need are some one eles not sure)
7. after ever thing is done and your finished transferring data to your computer
open the menu again selected usb then turn off .
your done.
dropbox said before is a site you can use to upload files to your computer on the go
say someone at home wants to see the pictures you just took on your trip its as simple as putting the pics in the folder dropbox and then there viewable on your computer i love the idea personally hope this helps
I use bluetooth.
If they're just short videos and you don't want to go through the USB process, then just upload them via Dropbox if you have a good internet connection. Google it, get an account, get the Android app.
You're missing step 3 in Bobler420's post. That is, after selecting mass storage, pull the notification drawer down and click on "USB connected".
Exactly, you have to mount SD card on your phone via pull-down menu.
Another way (if you have home wifi network) is to do it with EStrongs File Explorer where you can directly copy/paste from/to your phone over wifi connection.
Why not upload it via the facebook app? If that's what you are wanting to do.

I do it via sugarsync (https://www.sugarsync.com/) - works nicely, even if the client could use some additional work....
you've gotta mount your usb from the notifications menu after plugging in your cable.
or use dropbox.
or email attachment.
or upload it straight to facebook.
I tend to use Dropbox since I'm such an utter slob I can never be bothered digging out the nano-USB cable...

I used to plug my GTab into my Windows computer (I'm not using Kies, and don't want to) and it would show up as a drive with all of my respective folders (photos, videos, etc.)
I recently replaced my hard drive, and now when I plug my GTab in, it shows up in My Computer as a camera icon labeled: GT-P7510
When I double-click the icon it opens a window with about 25 folders, but the folders aren't labeled and have nothing in them. What gives?
could try reinstalling the samsung drivers (not kies)
The drivers can be found in the development section in the how to root video walkthrough thread.
Also check you do not have USB debugging mode enabled on the TAB

windows may have assigned a driv eletter in the past to a camera you once plugged in. if the tablet has now been assigned the same drive letter it may be taking on the same properties, hence the camera icon etc.
presume you have windows 7...
go to your start menu, right click computer, choose manage, under storage, click disk management, it should show you your tablet a drive. along with your hard drives and any other storage attached.
in the top section, right click your tablet and click "change drive letter and paths".
choose a drive letter youve never used before for your tablet. fingers crossed it should be back to a normal drive behaviour now...

When I plugged my GTab into my computer, I got a message saying that windows had found new hardware, and then it proceeded to install the necessary Samsung drivers. It indicated that everything had gone OK.

Thanks, but my drive is not showing up under disk management, although my Tab is saying USB Connected, and MTP Connected. I am using Windows XP, btw.
Problem Solved!
OK, after a lengthy phone call to Samsung Support, I finally got my computer to recognize my Galaxy Tab.
He first had me download the USB drivers from Support/Software page. However, when I tried to install it, I got a message saying it couldn't be installed (don't ask me why).
Yet, when I went into the Device Manager, the Samsung drivers were listed under USB controllers and it indicated that they were working properly.
To make a long story short, the Support person determined that I must have had an old version of Windows Media Player on my computer (I did, version 9). He told me to update to the latest version (version 11).
When I did that, Windows recognized my GTab as a mass storage device and everything works properly now.
So, make a note: If you ever replace your hard drive, and you're using an old operating system like I am (Windows XP), make sure you update your Windows Media Player to the latest version.
Lately my Windows 7 computer will not recognize my tablet over USB, unless I remove and reinstall all the drivers, but then it will only recognize the tablet once and then I have to do it all over again.
I thought it was a Windows 7 error, but this issue is also accompanied by a process.android.media force close on my tablet whenever the MTP is initializing. (Actually I get this error alot anyway, but I also get it when hooking up via USB).
I don't know if the two are related, but I would appreciate any help anyone has to get rid of the forcclose on the tab so that I can start troubleshooting my Windows computer.

Ok it looks like I fixed the Windows 7 issue by using USB dev view to delete all old drivers, and reinstalling the Samsung driver.
Now I also figured out that the media storage app is causing the force close errors, and I cleared the data. It seems to work so far.
A more detailed how to or a step by step would help many people on this forum. I've seen many people having this problem and nowhere to go to figure it out except reading too many posts and a lot of google searches.
Any chance you could do this for everyone?
it looks like you had to figure it all out on your own so it be great if you could help others here.

Here is what I had to do to fix my issue. Hopefully this helps someone else.
I had more than one issue with my Galaxy Tab 10.1 connecting to Windows 7. When I connected my tablet, I would always have to reinstall the driver for Windows 7 to recognize my tablet. I also had constant android.process.media force closes.
After searching Google for hours, I came across this website..
On your Windows 7 computer

First, scroll down to the bottom of the web page and look for the **Optional** section and download the USB Deview app. I extracted the .rar file to my desktop.
Right click on the USBDeview.exe app and Run as Administrator.
This will open a list of all the different USB drivers on your system. I uninstalled every Android device, every Samsung device, and every ADB device on the system. If it was Android related, I deleted it.
Next, I scrolled back up to the One-Click USB Driver Installation: section of the Android Simplicity website, and followed those directions to reinstall the driver.
Finally, Open the settings on your Galaxy Tab. Click on Applications, manage applications. Select the All heading, and scroll down to, and select Media Storage. Then Clear the media storage data.
Now you can connect your tablet to your computer, and Windows 7 should install the correct driver.
Your galaxy tab should now connect to Windows 7 and the android.process.media force closes should all be gone.
As a side note, if you are rooted you can also use Bloat freezer to freeze the media storage app and stop the media scanner from running completely.

How do I connect my Nexus 4 to a Windows PC, so as to transfer my files ? I cant use LG PC Suite V, even though its a LG device ! So my question is it possible to manage my Nexxi with a pc suite, Like I used to do it with my previous android devices ? :cyclops:
This is my first Nexus device(which is by far the super awesome device i have ever had), so please dont mind if I am missing something very obvious.
Just use a USB cable and connect your N4 to your windows PC. You should be able to transfer files using window explorer.
As far as I know all the suites you are talking about are made by the manufacturers for phones running their own UI's, Sense, TouchWiz, etc. I use Windows Media Player to sync music, photos and videos with my N4. You can also just drag and drop files into it if need be. While WMP doesn't quite do all that a suite does, backup is one thing, it is sufficient for what I need to get done.
If both the pc and cell are connected to wireless use airdroid. Cant get any easier than that.

Yes. I did that, but nothing came up i could not browse through the phone memory.. Although there was a eject nexus 4 in the right bottom bar ( like it comes when you connect a pen drive or an external hard disk), but i don't see nothing connected to browse in my computer.

If you do a search on pdanet, you'll see it's an app that has almost every freaking driver imaginable.
Did it finnaly ! I could connect it VIA AirDroid with USB tethering ON. Just like wireless connection, Airdroid supports connection via USB too.
Actually you should be able to just plug it in and browse the phone through windows explorer (kinda like a usb hard drive). Dont think air droid is necessary for usb.
Especially since you have the option to eject it from your pc i don't think its a driver issue.
I once had a similiar issue to yours and what i did was go into settings > storage > the menu button (the 3 vertical dots in the upper right) > usb computer connection > and check MTP. For some reason it was not checked.

Yes, but the actually problem, some time ago I had installed the ADB drivers, thinking that I had to install some driver to connect my device. Yesterday, Saw that this caused the problem and neither the windows media player nor the explorer could browser through the phone memory.
After uninstalling that driver for good, I could connect easily, although it shows as a media device and I cannot get to see the list of folders in explorer, hence I started searching for AirDroid using USB. And Voila !!
So let me get this straight... I just bought my Nexus 4. The last Android phone I had was a Galaxy Nexus, and I could simply open Windows Explorer, and drag n drop any file I pleased. Simple.
Now with this phone, I can't do that. For example, a zip file, keep getting the error "Cannot Copy Item". This is with MTP on. I haven't tried the cable that the phone came with, but would that really make a difference? I tried different folders too.
Am I missing something?
UPDATE: So I tried a new text file, and it worked... My zip file was 11mb. I'm guessing it only recognizes certain file types in MTP? If so, guess I'll have to use something like AirDroid
I can see most of the things that are on my phone from the desktop, but it seems like a lot of stuff is missing...
I checked in the connection settings, MTP is selected, and on my desktop I selected "Show hidden files". I can access the N4 from My Computer, and I see a lot of folders, music shows up fine. But for example I can't see web pages that I've saved using OffBrowser. From the phone I can use the X-Plore app to view the files I have in the phone's memory, and from there I can see that OffBroswer has saved over 250 MBs worth of web pages. But when I try to drag-and-drop them to the desktop, Windows Explorer tells me the OffBroswer has 1 byte of storage in use.
As I said, I made sure to show any hidden files, so why aren't all of the files showing up. Anyone have any idea?
EDIT:
Same with the Opera browser. I've been saving a handful of webpages using Opera Mobile and I wanted to copy them onto my desktop, but they don't seem to show up in Windows Explorer, I just see a lot of TMP files in the Opera folder.
Screw it. I just use Airdroid now. So easy and great features.

this might help : To connect nexus 4 to computer via usb:
plug in the usb , connect usb to phone . it will display the charging icon as battery will be charning. Go to settings -storage -on top right you will see 3 vertical “square dots” click it will say “usb computer connection” then it will give you two options a. MTP and PTP. Simply select MTP and you are good to go. It will now show nexus 4 as a usb drive on my computer.
