How is this possible? - Vibrant General

My friend has an unlocked vibrant, that she uses on AT&T. She loved the phone but hated edge. within 24 hours of having it on AT&T it started to show 3G! I ran a speed test just to make sure it wasnt a fluke. The download speeds were above 1.4 mb/s! I took a picture of it with my droid x anyone have an answer for this?
http://yfrog.com/jbvibrantj

more then likely, Att found out that he was using a Vibrant and added a data plan to his account if he didn't have one already. Also the Vibrant has the bands for Att for 3g, but the Captivate does not have t-mobiles bands for 3g. There is another forum on this same topic, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=735461

Confirmed! I got a code from unlockadic on EBay and now have my Vibrant on ATT! FU TMobile!
Could you not have just bought a captivate?
Sure, but wanted a Vibrant and got one used much cheaper. Plus, I don't have a contract and don't want to have one.

Yeah I am confused, what is the benefit of having a vibrant on AT&T as opposed to just getting a captivate? Aren't you basically running the same phone but without 3G?
We're all happy for you, not sure why though.
Plus, I need to use it out of the country and att wouldn't unlock the Captivate for 10 months, even if bought at full price. What do you mean no 3g? I am using 3g on it no prob.
Being that there have been several people wanting to unlock it without success, I figured I would let everyone know that this source is confirmed to work. If you aren't concerned, why bother posting that you don't care?

Really? That is interesting I have always been told that the tmo and AT&T 3G networks weren't compatible, and my unlocked mytouch has no 3G access.
Edit; It isn't that I didn't care I was just confused at the benefit of doing it considering the availability of nearly the same device on the network you are using it on.
maybe you should give Simple Mobile a try since it's unlocked. $60 a month for unlimited everything, no contract. An additional $10 gets you international calling. Sorta like Boost Mobile, except you supply your own unlocked GSM phone. There's a one time $12.99 fee to get their SIM.
I went this route with my daughter as I was able to get her a cheap used slider phone for practically nothing.
And the reason why this worked for him is the Vibrant supports the UMTS1900 band that AT&T uses. One of the rare T-Mobile phones that does.
I am confused how you are using 3G? ATT uses 850mhz band for their 3G and the Vibrant only is able to use 3G on either 1700mhz or 2100mhz. Am I missing something here?

Yep, 3g is working. The places I will be spending time in out of the USA don't have many options for service. Basically I buy prepaid sims and don't use data.
I have been with ATT so long that I still have the $15/mo unlimted data. Which is low enough to warrant leaving the account on while I am out of the country.
So to recap, ATT would not let me unlock the Captivate for 10 months even if I bought it outright. (I spent a long time talking to them to find this out as I was about to purchase a Captivate)
I do not want to get into a new contract
I need to use it out of the country.
I got a Vibrant used at a good deal.
That Simple Mobile looks like a good deal! If I didn't have the $15/mo unlimited data now, I would give them a shot.

I don't know but it is working. I have crappy service at my house (for all carriers) and it goes back and forth between "3G" and "E". When I have a descent signal, it sure seems pretty snappy so I believe it is 3G. I will try a speed test when I am in a good signal location. Aren't the Captivate and Vibrant the same hardware wise? Wouldn't it make sense that it would work with ATT 3G if that is the case?
They area similar hardware but the radios are carrier specific. I am pretty sure it won't work on 3G on ATT for the same reason the iPhone doesn't work on T-Mo's 3G. You must be seeing some sort of glitch on your phone. Definitely try a speed test while you are on 3G and let us know!

I had to take a drive to test. Solid 5 bars, 3G indicator and tested on DSL reports and mobilespeedtest.com, both gave same numbers 1127kbps.
Get the speedtest.com app in the market.that is a more reliable speed test app.

I see speedtest by xtreme labs, speedtest.net speed test, and mordax speedtest. No speedtest.com app shows up.

Got it. I will test tomorrow and post the results.
I am confused about the Vibrant's 3G capabilities on ATT network as well...
When I had my Nokia N95 unlocked it didn't work on TMO's 3G but did on ATT's network. The same deal with iPhones, they won't work on TMO's 3G and limited to EDGE.
Well, I will have TMO unlock my Vibrant and pop my blackberry's ATT card in to see what's the deal.
You should of got an iphone... Lol.
Good luck with working it all out!

Using the Omni 2 with T-Mobile?

I’ve done a lot of research on other websites but I can’t seem to find much about using the Omni 2 with T-mobile on XDA. I was going to buy an unlocked version of the Omni 2 on Ebay and use it with my T-Mobile account. I previously had a Touch Pro 2, but I’m sick of it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
i'm assuming you mean t-mobile in the US? i'm using one with them for about 2 months without any problems so far, granted t-mobile's 3g band is 1700mhz so i don't have 3g speeds, which is fine with me since i don't have a data plan anyways (i use wifi where i can). was a little tricky setting up the mms settings to receive pictures full size though. either way i don't have any complaints, other than the fact i won't be able to use their 3g network.
i have an I8000L from canada btw, which means the 3g bands are 850/1900mhz which at&t uses, so i'm thinking of switching to them since i'm not on contract with t-mobile anymore, so i can take advantage of their 3g.
hope that helps a little. just noticed you posted this almost a month ago so maybe you already made a decision..
I am using an Omnia II in the UK (through resellers, because T-Mobile didn't have this handset). And 3G is fine where I am, no trouble with that here.

Should I get a replacement for my hardware locked vibrant?

I just got a vibrant and I just found out it was hardware locked. I'm wondering, should I get a replacement since I'm still under warranty and remorse period?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
No. Trade it for a G2 and I'll send you my non-hardware locked one.
didn't read but yes, call them up and trade it in for a new one, ur phone is considered defective, if u bring it in the store they'll prob just laugh at you and not help since they're all dealerships, call them
If you're looking to unlock a Vibrant so that you can use it on AT&T, problem is that HSPA (3G) frequencies are different, so data speeds are limited to 2G. I just bought a Captivate to run on T-Mobile and have the opposite problem. Interested in a trade?

Not true. In the Los Angeles area, I get 3G if I plug in my AT&T SIM in the Vibrant. I get higher download speeds on the Vibrant from AT&T than on T-Mobile.
But the international Galaxy S, which works with AT&T at 3G speeds, did not work on T-Mobile's 3G, dropping to 2G instead.

TMobile LTE Dayton Ohio

I thought there was a dedicated TMobile One thread here. Now I don't see it and running late today, so--
A sales rep told me a tech said Dayton will turn on LTE in July. Cincinnati will not for now. He said TMobile says to start selling that info here for phone purchases. So, may be pretty accurate. Have known him for awhile. Don't know if that will help anyone like me waiting for much better signal here. I am on fence staying with TMO or going ATT. And don't want to buy phone till I can test the One on TMO LTE where I need the better performance here for business appts. I have other reasons, but not important to this thread.
I know I can get dev edition, but not sure on it's optimization for att as opposed to att one as far as signal reception. I know that can open a bucket of worms for discussion. But, again as OP, not really wanting to get in to that here.
This is basically just FYI--
For what its worth,I've been seeing 3G and H data on my international one X in many parts of dayton,Kettering, beavercreek, moraine,Huber heights, riverside. Working on my att jetstream and inspire as well.
Wonder if they'll have the holes filled in by July when they flip on LTE?
Been debating this phone vs the butterfly, and now that the refarm is creeping in,not sure if I go with t mobile or the dev edition if I go with the one
Thanks for the info

Thanks Scotty,
Yeah, the holes are their biggest problem. Not enough towers. May be same with lte.
They offer could pricing, but not great coverage.
I am still not sure on lte here in July, when you look at how little they have done compared to att this year. Will see--
If you are buying any of the HTC One Developer Edition 32GB or 64GB the only problem that you might run into is with T-Mobile Because they still have 1700Mhz in use in some areas where they dont have 3G or HSPS on 1900Mhz. But as of today they have Re-frame most of there network in almost 48 cities with 1900Mhz so you will be able to use there 3G or HSPS with Downloads of 14MB and Uploads 6MB. As for my case I got the 64GB HTC One Developer Edition and Im now seing the 1900Mhz in some parts of Jacksonville FL. Your phone will also support LTE 1900Mhz on T-Mobile Lte ones they roll it out. So far I love my phone its Bloatware free with lots of Gigs. I hope this help.

I will probably go att, since tmo towers or less in number than att. Since Dayton still doesn't have att lte and they have been very agressive, i am doubting lte for tmo in july. att is set for this summer for sure. I am torn on dev or not. Would like to see someone in Dayton with it, but i will probably decide before either have lte here.
has anyone been able to determine if team mobile turned LTE on in dayton?
ATT did this week.
Call a store and ask most would have att phones here. Att is working great.

ive had lte in Springfield for about 3 weeks i was told that t mobile flipped it on in Springfield the same time

[Q] Verizon LG G2 to T-mobile LTE?

I have read a lot already on this site about my issue just wanted to clear up a few unanswered questions.
I am looking to switch from Verizon to t-mobile because of prices and terrible reception where I'm living in Riverside Ca. So I know that I can simply put in a t-mobile sim and change to the correct gsm settings and get cell reception (correct me if I'm wrong) but what about getting LTE from t-mobile? I have looked to see if the new 700 mhz band covers here and Ventura County Ca. (where I am when I'm not in Riverside) and it does so I should get LTE without having to put in a custom Rom, correct?
I'm a novice when coming to roms (plus a failed attempt) so i would like to avoid them as much as I can. Will do it if I have to though... All about saving $$$$
Thanks for the replies.
@mjmjpfaff
I know what your saying about saving $$$ phones these days are almost the half of a old car/price of a motorcycle.
If your Verizon phone is not simlocked and also has support for the LTE bands which T-Mobile is using then it's possible to get LTE working without the need to buy another phone. If it's mentioned on internet on multiple sites that the G2 supports that LTE band then you can get it without a custom rom.
In my eyes it's possible to have working LTE from T-Mobile on your verizon phone, but to be 100% sure I would contact Verizon support about your question.
I also had many fail attempts with custom roms first but after you get how it works, you can flash anything as smooth as butter:good:
you could also wait for a VS980 G2 user who had the same issue as you but I think that it would take you more time awaiting for a reaction from somebody since not many people are browsing the Q&A section.

I found this on another thread:
"I just switched from a Verizon Galaxy Note 2 to the G2 since all I can get from it with t-mobile is H+ speeds (about 4mbs-6mbs). I inserted the t-mobile sim into the verizon g2 and it automatically switched to global mode and I then went in to edit the apn settings to fast.t-mobile.com. 4G LTE is working just fine on stock rom kitkat update (I'm in L.A. suburb). Speeds range from 15mbs to 30mbs+ depending on where I am in the city. Here are some screenshots"
This guy is pretty much in my area and sounds like he did not do anything other switch in a t-mobile sim...

I will DM him to get some more insight.
Thanks for your reply.
I'm using my droid mini on tmobile and am getting LTE speeds. You should see them if you're in an area where the network was refarmed to 1900mhz
Keep in mind the fastest speeds you will see is 21Mbps unless you swap for the Tmobile Verizon which goes up to 42Mbps and higher.
