Sorry for another noob question, but i own a blackstone for 2 weeks now and
i'm trying to realize why there are so many different ROMs out there.
* i'm not asking a "which rom question", just trying to learn more.
So.. i have a new blackstone with WM6.1 and TF3d. why do i need to install
a ROM anyway? i know i don't have to, but i see many people talking about it
and i feel that i'm missing something.
I would say... if you are happy with your ROM, there's no reason to change. In general, the usual reasons are:
- Your ROM is branded (Orange, T-Mobile...) and you don't need the 'extras' that your carrier has included in default ROM.
- You want to make some 'tuning' or your device and someone has cooked a ROM which includes all the patches, tricks and regisitry changes that will make your device better
- There are new versions of TF3D, camera program, or any other default program and HTC does not offer these updates to you, are only included in a new device; however you will always find a cooked ROM where these updates are included.
- Customization: Some cooked ROMs include nice TF3D customization, wallpapers, and a set of finger-friendly applications pre-installed. If you are bored with default settings and you don't like to spend much time downloading & trying things, a new ROM could be an option.
I'm still using the ROM that came with my unit.
My personal reason to flash a new (custom) rom, is to get more out of the HD then HTC give me originally. I just knew it had more potential (and I was right ). Plus, I like to play around with PC's, gadgets etc.
What's all this about newer radio versions?
Why do people rebuild old cars? why add 4-barrel carb and headers ect. Many reasons many cooked roms preform better than stock. other include apps in the rom not included by your vender. Others flash just to tinker, its fun to try the newest latest. Mosttly its to customize what you have and make it diffrent from the 100,000 other HDs
I would be very cautious about flashing your device with unofficial ROMs. While making a few improvements they carry a potentially large number of glitches. So if you're an adventurous type, go for it. Otherwise stick to the official ROM.

Link to new radio's thread here and flashing radio's in wiki here
The radio provides improvements on the GSM radio stack and this has effect on the GSM signal, AT command interface, GSM data modem (3G, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, etc...) functionality that is controlled by the Radio Interface Layer (RIL). The radio stack has nothing to do with WiFi or bluetooth -- it is only for the GSM/WCDMA(3G) part of the device.
Newer radio's our released which may improve GSM signal, although certain radio's work better for different countries/areas.
Ok now i get it.
I have the original ROM that came with my device and after i've found out why
people change their ROMs i think it doesn't really worth it.
The only thing i've found useful is changing my radio version, which works really
good. so now i have radio v1.12 installed.
Of course i like to tweak my device and configure it to my own needs, but for
this reason i've installed many apps without flashing a cooked ROM.

There is also some fixes which have been released by HTC for screen flickering etc which can be found on their website here
If you install a new ROM version, is possible the to put the old (original) version back to your HTC (abd howw to do that) or is too late then ?

Installed these fixes as well, but i wish HTC had more stuff in their website to download. Like newer radio versions for example?
Anyway i'm glad we can find all these things here on XDA-developers.

Welcome to xda developers!!
What a warm welcome that guy got.
It answered most of the question I have about using cooked (non-official) roms too.
If we are using non official ROMs can we still change the TF3D theme's and look of the Touch HD?
I am having trouble finding the best set of applications to replace the calendar, mail, SMS etc etc... I guess this is a regular question, BUT any suggestions?

Not to make you feel left out....Welcome to xda developers!!
There are numerous different themes and applications you can use to change your phones appearance. They can all be found in the applications forum located here. Do a general search for what you are looking for i.e. themes or calendar and see what threads aleady exist before creating any new ones. An example of a thread is this one Customizing TF3D - The Collection!
Hope this helps

Also check out the wiki
Tweaks section which offers advice on:

I have no idea where to start, with there being so many different custom ROMS on this site.
Can anybody recommend a good, reliable, ROM to install?
I'm totally new to Windows Mobile so I have no idea which have a good reputation.
Not looking for any features in particular, although I'd like to keep HTC Sense.
If any ROMs have fixed the SMS lag, or more importantly, the stuck in outbox problem, then that would be great. Even the new SMS fix hasn't stopped them getting stuck for me, and now HTC messaging seems to crash.
If you are bored of the stock one and want to try a lighter custom ROM then my suggestion is:
1. Topix 1.1.6
2. Kumar's Leo 2.1

There's apparently a fix for the SMS problem coming this month, from HTC. You can always remove HTC messaging, as it's that that causes the problem - not the OS or the phone.
If I were you, I'd stick with what you've got, unless you're looking for something specific. Bear in mind that applying a new ROM may invalidate your warranty.
Otherwise, just read up in the ROM section and find one you like the look and sound of. The only way to know is to try

The Artemis HD2 ROM thread currently has 39 pages- you'd be much better advised reading that and posting a question there.
have any one found a STABLE ROM that thay used for 2-3 days without soft reset ?
im trying to find most stable ROM possible, preferably 6.5.3 or above, but the one i can trust not to hang for 2,3 days of hard core use as Music Player, Web Browser and Online connection to MSN/Skype for 24Houers.
with or without HTC Sence.
at the moment im not that concern about performance as any rom is still faster then my old treo pro lol
yup, a stock one.
I´m using the official one and no problems.
1.48 or 1.66 ? if 1.48 then why not 1.66 ?

You should try the Official 1.66.405.2 WWE ... it's most stable ROM for daily usage... it's included all the fixes from HTC ... so there is no problem... try it
just installed 1.66 ... installing all the soft i use, just installed Smaberg White 1 percent battery thing that makes % appear above the battery, now i have little black square next to it... but i guess that a different issue

In my opinion.... if you use the official ROM... just install BsB Tweaks and then it's fine...
Hi,
Where can I find "Install BsB Tweaks"
Thanks

will try that soon prob on Monday, i been using freyberry Premium_nomess V6 or whatever the latest one is, for a while (i hate HTC messaging) but it hangs occasional especially over night, i have to do a soft reset every morning for some reason which make it useless as alarm clock (although i have suspicion it maybe due to someting i install or combination of stuff i install coz no one else seems to have that problem)
but i kinda need HTC Album (facebook uploading) i guess its not in bearbone so i will try WMPhone version or something

next time do a search
Dutty's HG V.08. actually in HD2 i never get stuck..
Two weeks without a softreset that's thruly amazing especially
if you consider that WM 6.5.5 is not official and beta.
No mather which rom I use but everyday I do a softreset, kind of a habbit.
Currently I'm using the 2.07 T-Mob.
@Vladimir, no offence but I don't think you can open a thread like this and pick a rom based on the experiences people tell you here.
I think you need to test yourself as everyone has a different use/experience with a rom.
Just my 2 cents

I'm using MIRI's 6.5 ROM.
I have found it to be completely stable. I have to avoid 6.5.x ROMs 'cos Memory Map doesn't work properly on them.
The stock ROM is stable, but it's a mess! They should have included a way to tidy the cluttered start menu. Things are improved by installing BSB Tweaks.
IMHO there is no such thing as the perfect ROM!
There are number of factors to consider that can effect the overall stabilty of a ROM be it stock or cooked, a ROM that one person might find it to be flawless, the other might have issues, remember not all bugs are ROM related so consider the following points:-
- The 3rd party apps you use
- The network you are on
- The radio version you use or combination of the radio & rom
I'm currently using stock 1.66 ROM not that it's the best but it's been the most stable for my apps and daily use!
One thing that frustrates me is the lack of constructive feedback you get from people flashing various stock or cooked ROM's it's allways comments like "This ROM is very fast and stable" or "this the best ROM I've tried" what's funny is that you get these comments when they've only used the ROM for couple of hours or in some cases just 5 minutes!!!!
IMHO you must use the ROM for at least couple of days if not a week and once you've installed all your apps then you can establish how good the ROM is in your daily use only then you should give your feedback so that others can have a better idea of how the ROM really performs!!!
There may be a good chance that this thread maybe closed... but I'll ask it anyway...
What ROM are you using and why?
I'm asking as sometimes, reading threads like this exposes people to an idea/function/app/etc that they didn't consider in another ROM...
I'm using BlackSTONEhenge because it's really fast and not too heavy on the memory usage...

I was using cloudys rom, this is close to stock, very stable and fast, also low on memory useage.
I used to use his rom on my diamond back in the day.
Now flashed back to XannyTech Grid Leo 2.6 rom, as this rom is perfect for me. Fast, lots of tabs, eye candy, apps installed etc....
I am using XannyTech Grid Leo 2.4 as the version 2.5 and 2.6 seems to be a bit buggy to me.
I'll allow this thread to continue (for now), but I'll move it to general discussion forum as its not about rom development
As for which rom I use....see my sig ......as for why I use it, you'll just have to flash it to find out!!!
Rick
p.s. I have 2 HD's, one for general use, one for the constant flasher (me) who wants to try the latest builds. My sig only represents my everyday rom
I was using T2M rom v23544! It's very nice!! free RAM 60MB....!
Using ROM in signature.
Stable, not too many unneeded programs cooked, all programs I need (see signature) work...
After installation of everything I need I still have over 74 MB program memory free...
Oh, and Manila 2.1, which I like more than 2.5
I use Topix 3.5 wm6.1. Super fast ROM, after restart 68perc free RAM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=460640
1.56.405.1 [43972] WWE
WM 6.1 today screen with launcher 79% free ram or 153 mb after reset, don't have to close anything, don't have to soft reset...maybe once a week...if that, most reliable OEM rom I've used in nearly ten years of ppc/WM use.
boring huh....just the way I like it
Occasionally google maps will have glitch where the screen doesn't refresh properly after the sip has been on there, but thats about it
XannyTech Grid Leo 2.4 is used here for the same reason as wind79, but in addition it's the only rom I've come across that can control the song playback forward and backward via volum control when the screen is turned off. XT lost something on the way from 2.4 onward. =(
Any other roms around that do the volume/song selection trick?
I am use:Rom..kwbrs Topix 3.5.10 [Sense 2.5.2012][5.2.21897] without hTC messaging
Stable and good battery..45% memories after softreset. good performances...
I'm using Miniterror's.
I liked Miri's, but something (can't remember now what), made me look for better, tried Energyrom, but the Cookie thing messed with my volume buttons, and was a hassle to fix.
I expected Cloudyfa's to be amazing, but the radio was bad for me and I tried Miniterror on a whim.
I'm very happy. I just wish he included some of the apps (like GPS stuff and the action screen) like in the Energy ROM, then it would be perfect.
I'm planning on going to the current release, but so far, I'm problem free so I'm slow to move...

Using this one too. Tried several WM 6.5 ROMs. I do not see what do I gain with WM 6.5 but see clearly what I lose: A lot of RAM and speed.
in Topix 3.5 WM6.1 I start with 35% RAM used and with Opera opened it's on 55%, not 80% like WM 6.5.
BareBones (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=472972)
6.1, Extremely fast, stable, doesn't include all the stuff I don't need (specifically Manila which really slows the HD, even if not in use), and it's open so I can easily modify the ROM and add the stuff I like!
I wish there was a 6.5 ROM with the same benefits out there, but honestly I'm very happy with my current ROM and don't see much of a reason to change it.
I'm a Dutty rom fan... see my current rom in my signature. This rom seems to endure anything, it's fast, reliable and I found no bugs whatsoever! You just need to take it easy on installing apps and pay some attention to running processes and close useless ones from time to time. With this rom seem to work any Sense 2.5 mod (and I tried allot of them). Oh, I'm not a wm6.5.x follower (don't like that stupid bottom bar, and also that stupidly narrow taskbar) so I'll stick to 6.5, it's more appropriate for our Blascktone.
stock! stock! stock! 1.59.707 (48753) WWE - the fastest ROM I've ever seen

Hi danim, where can i download this ROM? I went to the link you provided, but can't find the download link...
please advice
energy rom use on my HD why? simply i dont no.......eny beter sugest...
I was using miris until he stopped support for them.
I also had GPS problems (maybe it was my radio...) 5 seconds lock - 5 seconds no lock - really frustrating.
Reflashed with latest radio and energys latest titanium last weekend (I like my HD minimal)
It's got 90% of the apps I need (I added pocket player and SKTools), is super fast, and I get a GPS lock within seconds everywhere now - great because I work abroad (and I get lost a lot).
Miris roms served me well, but this new energy rom is even faster - very very happy with it so far.

I use the same Duttys ROM ....... really fast and stable .... I did last soft reset about 3 weeks ago and my ram load is still only 58% ....... that's why I have always used only Duttys ROM.
P.S. I have tried many ROMs myself, but none so stable.
i would like to speed up my TMO HD2, i have already flashed the HSPL3, just want to know what are the best ROMs. I dont really have much of an issue with my device, i have read alot of post of users who are very upset with the HD2, i am a very happy user. I do have the data connection issue, which seams pretty close to the IPHONE problem.
So if there is a list of the best apps, or if someone can give me a little more insight on which ROMs, are the best, and what they will give me in return.
Thank You
Best rom answers are subjective... A lot of people like the Energy roms...
I use bsb tweaks and Cookies Home Tab. Both work great and help out tremendously. A good task manager is key to keeping your hd2 running well, I use Dutty's but there are others. Your reception issues are decidedly different than the iphone. Try other radio images out, but be careful of the so-called .51 radios as they will brick your device.
omega and elegancia
ok,
1st, what are Radio ROMs?
2nd, i use the cookies home tab, and the CHTE, those are .cab, i use a the DUtty task manager, works well, have a few .cab i installed from xda
3rd, what are energy ROMS,
are all the ROMs, just modified versions of current running ROMs on the Phone
you really should just go into the rom section there are descriptions and walk throughs
the radios are what control the reception and quality of calls and affect the battery.
the rom is the actual OS and there is the updated 6.5.3 stock on the hd2 is 6.5.1
plus there are little updates and many tweaks that just make it faster and better and roms include different customizers and programs
how do i tell which radio i currently use for my HD2,
go to settings, system, device info.
and make sure you hard spl before flashing anything. go read the guides
