I was out tonight at a friends house and experienced very rapid battery drain as compared to any other day I have the phone.
At one point were were playing a board game and the phone was on the table. Screen was off and I had no programs (that I know of) running except for a couple of widgets. I checked the battery ever 5 minutes or less, and it had gone down at least two percent every time I checked it.
I have had the battery down this low several times before, and had slower drains that this while playing games, so something was not right.
I turned the phone off and back on, and the battery drain slowed down significantly and acted in lien with what I had experienced before.
This is my first android phone, and first smartphone, and I know that I don't know much. My question is, should this sort of thing recur, what can I do to figure out the cause and stop it? What would you have done in this situation?
If it's that major, it's probably an app sitting in the background doing something.
Try uninstalling things until it stops.

I don't know what all your experiences are, but I noticed the past few days that my epic is getting hot on the back.
I also noticed that my battery is draining more so than usual. When I got the update last week my battery life sucked, but now since this overheat thing it's gotten worse. It drops a lot even when in standby.
I do not have gps, wifi, anything else on. I am not rooted. Didn't do any battery tweaks. This is completely stock di18.
This is normal use with 3g. It's getting annoying and I'm hoping someone has an answer. Thanks!
Do you have any email accounts configured in the mail application?
This happened once or twice - I rebooted the phone and all was peachy.
Sounds like you have a rogue process wearin it out.
Yeah my phone overheated yesterday while charging....this phone has a few more steps to go before it really beats my hero...

I partly found out what the problem was, but it seems you guys are ahead of me. I had some process keeping my CPU running at 95-100% nonstop. I still haven't figured out what the process was, as now it is back to the normal 5-15%, but I'll have to keep an eye on it now.
the task manager widget turns red and it shows you what process was causing it...for me it was the xda app...a few times.
I think my problem was not backing out of WordFeud. I didn't notice anything on the task manager though. Hasn't happened since that one time.
this happens to me when i'm plugged in and using gmail. screen flickers and then shuts off. the screen-off battery indicator shows the batt. gauge and a little thermometer sign next to it indicating it's too hot.
wtf?!?! this has to be a defect. anyway, is there any official word on this? any pr from sammy/sprint?
i have read elsewhere about some epics resetting themselves a few times a day which could indicate an issue with heating (at least on a pc). so if you think it might be hardware its possible. otherwise keep doing what your doing, monitor your processes for anything thats eating it up, go to about phone > battery use > cell standby to see your time without signal. the higher this is the more battery use. also, might want to consider a startup manager to prevent the 2 DRM files (search forums) from running as this can affect batt life too
you can also use setcpu even (free on here, search it) to throttle your cpu down when it hits a certain temp.
This is very interesting... My wife and I both have this phone, she has had this happen several times after the last update (I though she was just crazy). Me on the other hand... No problem!

The only time my epic's battery gets hot is during heavy use or gps. Gps/Nav makes it heat up like a mofo. But other than that... *knocks on wood* Its all good, no problems. As far at battery life, I am rooted and using SetCPU to turn down the processor while the screen is off, helps a ton. Not using anything other than that... was using juicedefender but then I started not getting calls or text...

One thing, I learned, that didn't help my battery was putting my phone in the locker at work. That thing must have killed my TWS and ate my battery alive.
i feel like this thread will start to die but i had a weird somewhat related issue last night. i too have had maybe 3-4 times where i woke up to my charging phone with the red LED and a screen that would not turn on, battery pull, worked fine.
however, THIS morning my phone would freeze like 30 seconds after boot EVERY time. tried a few things to no avail until I wiped, reinstalled my ROM (aosp 0.4.1) and the data from a previous backup (which was the way i got that ROM to first boot successfully according to tips in that thread).
so this worked, but i couldnt figure out why my other steps wouldnt. had to be something in the data partition of my system at the time, since changing that worked. the only thing i could think of is that app watchdog which someone mentioned to track processor usage by apps. anyone else ever experience this?
I have experienced this once when I was playing Robodefense while the phone was charging. My phone tends to get a little warm when it charges, and hot if I run something intensive while its charging. Wondering if this will be an issue when I use this phone for GPS nav while plugged into my car.

I dont have anything on, no wifi, gps, or any 4g (lol only if I could find it)...I even got rid of my facebook/twitter/weather updater widgets. The only thing that updates is email, and that's only if I click on it. The battery has been dying a lot faster and I charge my phone next to the window now because its like 20 degrees outside here in Chicago, so that brings down my phones temp lol....and today, my phone's battery life went from 100 to 5 percent in about three hours of barely using it...wtf?!
Also, another problem...sometimes when I lock my phone and unlock it after taking it out my pocket or something, the screen doesn't seem to respond...I keep swiping my finger over it to put in my password and it wont do anything and it only works when I slide up my phone for the horizontal view. This happens like 4 out of every 10 times I open phone.
Very embarrassing especially if your trying to get someones number down, I stopped showing off the phone now ...lol

I've been searching various forums for a fortnight now to try and diagnose an SII issue I've been having and Google inevitably brings me here. Unfortunately, the numerous threads on battery drain don't match the problem I've had and the solutions haven't helped.
Around two weeks ago I noticed the battery life on my handset was really terrible, draining in hours. I had been using it quite a bit at the time so assumed this was the cause. However, lately it has been draining within around 6-10 hours even when idle, usually dying completely overnight despite a full charge just before then. I don't have a huge number of apps installed - maybe 20, fairly standard ones like Twitter, Facebook, Amazon, no games and no 'battery defender' style apps. It's not rooted (it's 4.0.3) and I can't root it for other reasons.
The battery drain was a nightmare, basically going from power point to power point just to keep it topped up enough to use and it was draining during idle time and deep sleep. I very rarely ever have 3G, GPS or Bluetooth switched on. Wireless is on most of the time and it generally does have a signal in the two places I spend most time (home and work). It also has a strong Vodafone signal since I'm living in a major city centre.
I tried a few things:
1. Uninstalled all but the most-used apps I had. No change.
2. Uninstalled everything it was possible to uninstall. No change.
3. Installed BetterBatteryStats and CPU Spy. BBS plus many hours of searching kernel/partial wakelocks and so on showed nothing that looked odd at all, certainly nothing taking up a lot of time or regularly stirring the phone. CPU Spy showed it did deep sleep when idle.
4. Factory reset. This included no app installations except BBS, disabling the likes of Social Hub, Gaming Hub and all other stock apps I could. No tethering or wifi sharing, no wifi, no 3G, no GPS, no Bluetooth, nothing running. It was basically a handset sitting there doing nothing. BBS showed nothing odd that I could see but the battery still drains in hours. No partial wakelocks and a tiny number of kernel wakelocks taking up next to no time and occurring a handful of times. No change.
5. I charged it before bed, took the battery out and left it until morning. In the morning it was down at 79%. This seemed weird so I bought a brand new genuine Samsung battery and gave that a try. No change in the 6-10 hour drain but taking the battery out overnight showed no drain now.
6. The weirdest of all. I charged it fully before bed, switched it off over night and it was drained completely by morning. That seems crazy to me. I can fully understand poor software or bugs draining a battery but not when a handset is switched off.
I am lucky enough to be able to get a new handset through work but this issue really annoys me. I took very good care of the phone, never installed anything crazy, didn't over charge it, the handset never got warm at any time, I'm careful with Wifi/GPS/Bluetooth/3G and location services, yet I ended up with an effectively useless "mobile" phone.
Is there anything that comes to mind that could have caused this? Point 5 above made me think it was simply a battery issue and maybe it partly was (with two batteries, how unlucky) but point 6 is just crazy. What could cause a handset to drain a battery under these circumstances?

Take the phone to Samsung Service Centre. No phone should drain that quick when un-rooted and a full wipe has been done

Um...widgets? Some widgets on stock Samsung ROMs kills your battery - I remember AP mobile news is a huge drainer. Try limiting the number of widgets you put on your homescreens maybe?

I sugges too full reflash the stock rom and after count the batter time. If it does not help, it cold be HW error too - maybe it isn't.

Reading the thread of Jamal's Google Play Edition 4.4 ROM, i noticed some users were saying they could get 4 hours of screen on time. Sadly enough this wasn't the case for me, and I think many other users can confirm. On a full charge, i can barely get 2hours of screen on time out of it, which is of course unacceptable. I decided to analyse the battery usage.
What I've got after a full discharge is illustrated in the attachment. If you know how I used my phone during this period, the curve is very surprising and hard to explain. The first hours I had my 4G on for extended periods and I noticed pretty decent battery life, i.e. 25% gone after 1 hour of screen on time. That's surely an acceptable score and would give me also that beautiful 4 hours. But suddenly, the phone made a weird change. You can see that the phone starts discharging much faster with a new and constant slope. I tried stopping it but it didn't change at all. My 4G and wifi were all set to off, even my location settings were turned off. Nothing changed.
I started searching the web if some applications were not optimised for android 4.4 yet, but didn't find anything significant. But then I found topics about the Exchange issue which already gave many android 4.4 users headaches. I read about a constant error-looping that could cause fast battery drain and, sneaky enough, doesn't start immediately when the phone boots but can start after a period of several hours. I decided to shut the whole thing off and deleted my Exchange account. Rebooted the phone and the issue was gone.
Hopefully a fix will be brought out soon!
I know I had another post about my horrible battery life, however I was able to finally resolve that. This time however I have a new issue with it that just started a few days ago so I figured I would make a separate post.
I will say, on a side note, I'm super close to crushing my Turbo 2 in a bench vise at this point, Motorola and Verizon are quickly getting themselves to the top of my **** list......
I'm having an issue with a wakelock by the name of "ConnectivityService" that is keeping the phone awake and causing the "Android System" to be at the top of my battery drain list at 70%. This only seems to start draining the battery when I'm not connected to wifi. If I shut off wifi completely it gets worse.
Connectivity Service is holding the phone awake constantly and draining my battery down completely in just a few hours. I can't seem to figure out if there is an app or setting that can disable that wakelock, but I haven't installed anything new lately and there haven't been any app updates that I have seen.
The other issue is when I restart my phone, the battery level drops by 10% every time.
And for what its worth, with my past battery post "fix" I was only able to increase my battery to last around 20 hours on a single charge with 1.5 hours of screen on time. Still not great but this new issue is pretty much rendering the phone useless.
Any suggestions or should I put a deer slug through this phone?

Recently, since about a week, i've been experiencing sudden random reboots. Often when starting apps (especially the Camera is a real culprit here, but also Google Photo's). When entering pin-code all seems fine again. and sometimes i can just use the camera like normal. But sometimes it keeps rebooting and the only way to stop it is to quickly turn off battery saver (seems a solution till now for a while)
Searching online didn't really help much, as i found a few people with the same issue end of march also on Oreo update, but no solution yet.
Also the battery indicator seems off. it often drains reaallly slow (85% at the end of the day) and then at a random percentage (like 60%) just turns off. When turning it back on it only has 3%. So it could be battery related.
What i tried:
- Let the phone drain completely, then recharge to 100% overnight.
- Remove all apps installed in the last few weeks + all unnecessary apps.
I don't want to do a factory reset, because our IT then has to set up the Authenticator again which is a pain for them (and i already had them do that a few weeks ago :angel: )
Any tips on how to troubleshoot some more or more people seeing this behaviour?

That sounds kind of like a battery that's failing.
What's the age of the phone? And did you primarily use Huawei's supercharge brick or other methods / chargers? (I ask the second, because charging at 4.5A can be bad for the battery on a regular basis.)
I'd load up something like Ampere and watch the charge / discharge rates. I'd expect a normal discharge rate around 150-350mA, but it depends a lot on what you're doing. (GPS and moderate graphics will keep it up in the 800mA-1A discharge range, the rear camera with just the viewfinder seems to push 1.2A current draw.)
I'll give Ampère a try. I used both chargers but the phone is just over a year old. Nothing to warrant a bad battery already.
Besides that, recent discoveries lead to believe slow charging could actually cause more heat and be worse for battery. But again: it's a bit soon for something like that I think. I'll try Ampère first. But i doubt that's the issue.
I've noticed my phone gets toasty when fast charging. If it's hooked up to any charger other than Huawei's, it tends to stay cool.
And it happened again. More then 50 percent and then it turned off and only had 3 percent

That's what it looks like to me.
Fortunately, the batteries aren't that expensive to find (Google popped up a bunch for <$20), and actually getting in isn't too difficult either, if you want to swap it yourself.
Just to close this topic properly:
The issue got worse, but i was on holiday. Ordered a new battery with a toolkit to replace the battery for 30 euro's.
When i got back from my holiday i notices the battery had already pushed the screen loose. So getting the screen off was easy. Swapped the battery in just 5 minutes and now everything is working great again. The screen used to have some bright spots and those are gone aswell. I guess it was a giveaway of things to come.
