Factory data reset and phone contacts - Vibrant General

Will factory reset delete my phone contacts not the ones which are synced from gmail but the ones that are stored on the phone?

Yes. It resets it to the same way it came out of the box. Complete data wipe. Hence the "Factory" Reset.

Any good way to backup the contacts?

You should try using Google Contacts...open up a gmail account and save your contacts there. Then when you set up gmail on your phone, you'll have the option to sync all your contacts over the air.
I stopped storing contacts directly onto my phone or SIM a long time ago...Google Contacts and syncing is wayyyyyyy more convenient and secure IMO...

Synching Contacts

Has anyone else had problems lately synching their contacts? I wiped my phone the other day to load JFv1.41 and I backed up my contacts using MyBackup (from the Market.)
When I re-synched with google I got my contacts back but I noticed that none of them had images. I restored using MyBackup (it said it would overwrite any existing data.)
That was 3 days ago. After it synched the first time I had duplicate contacts on my phone so I removed the dupes. When I went to sync again it said syncing was having problems and I should try again. That was on the 25th and it hasn't synced since. I remember it saying there were too may deletions made (77 I think.)
Just now, I logged into gmail on the web and I had 8 contacts! (I have 107 on my phone.)
Not sure where to go next with this. Should I re-back up my contacts, re-associate my phone with my google account (with an empty contact list) restore the backup and re-sync?
sorry no issue here, mine sync up fine after the new JFv1.41
It was definitely due to the MyBackup program. Apparently they say to not use google sync and restore from their program (so what's the point?)
I removed all contacts on the phone, all contacts in gmail.com then restored from their backup. My contacts wound up in gmail but I still get the error in data synchronization!
I'll have to make some changes and try to force it again.
So, basically, dont use MyBackup to backup your contacts.

I'll probably have to wipe the phone and re-sign up with google to really fix it. Uhg.

correction dont restore your contacts, backing up is fine, especially if you want to switch gmail accounts
One should only use MyBackup to backup contacts if one isn't using a Google account. Otherwise, just use the built-in contact sync.
If you made the mistake, as I once did, of trying to use both then you just need to clear the contacts out of your G1 by dumping the data (http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f12/delete-limit-exceeded-10275/) -- not deleting them, as those deletes may then sync to your Gmail and delete the contacts there. Then you can just re-sync.
If they've gotten cleared out of Gmail then you're hosed.

[Q] Contacts in Phone/SIM/Gmail

When I try to create a new contact, either manually or after I receive call from a new number, I see option to store on Phone/GMail/SIM. It always defaults to GMail.
1) I don't use GMail and so I don't need it. What's the point of doing so? maybe it is just that it will be synced with GMail contacts?
2) Gmail contacts list is empty, meaning that all my contacts that were synced from Outlook, are phone contacts and not Gmail contacts. Am I correct?
3) And if I am correct, how can I change the default behaviour? to always store on phone by default instead of Gmail?
If you use the Market you need a Google account, whether or not you use it for email is your choice.
If you think of the Gmail account as a safe way to store your contacts online.
If you were unfortunate enough to lose or have your DHD stolen then you lose all your contacts stored on the phone & SIM.
Other than choosing the other options from the drop down menu, I don't know of any other way.

Yes, I hamy gmail account just for the market.
If I lose my phone, etc., all my contacts are still in Outlook and hence in all of my backups.
So if this is the only benefit of storing contacts in gmail, how can I change default behaviour to phone?

You can't.
Then, what would be the difference if for some new contacts I forget to change to phone and for some I don't and as a result, half my contacts are in gmail and half in phone?
I don't understand your question, as you seemed to answer it yourself.
If you forget to change where the contact is saved then the contact will be added to your Gmail contacts.
They will still appear in your contact list as normal.

[Q] How do I delete all my contacts?

My nexus s put 3 of each of my contacts on it and I was just wondering is there any way of deleting more than one contact at a time?
Do it from your gmail account.
google.com/contacts
You can clear data on contacts or search market for delete contacts

Contact Remover from the Market. Free. Easy.
you can go to contacts then menu and hit delete then select all.

Hm, I don't see a delete button after hitting Menu in the Contact list.
Sounds like you pulled the contacts from your sim card. If they have already synced what I recommend is logging into your gmail account. Then go to contacts, you can merge contacts. So if you have 3 contacts for each person merge them and edit them to be nice and pretty.
While doing this I would recommend having auto sync turned off on the phone. My preference is then to just do a factory reset on the phone. It will then pull the contacts from your google account.
There are other ways to do it, but this worked well for me. The bonehead at the Best Buy mobile store decided to import my contacts from my sim. I told her not to and instead of clearing it out she left it.
I was furious and explained to her I just came in here with a G1, why on earth would you import from my sim when you know it will just sync from my google account?
Factory reset is retarded. Just clear data under contacts or use one of the many alloys apps mentioned here. You don't need to even do that though because the sync will fix it.

Almost as retarded as installing an app to clear contacts? My assumption is that the poster just got the phone and imported form the sim so there is really no harm. It takes only a couple minutes to get everything back in place. It's pretty painless.
Just go on your computer to gmail, clean up all your contacts under my contacts, and let the auto sync work its magic.

Delete all contacts

so ive done some digging and cant find the answer. the phone on froyo would save contacts to the phone AND all accounts. we have multiple accounts for these phones and would like them to be synced with only the outlook account. what i want to do is delete all phone numbers saved on to phone memory at once. then re sync with outlook so all is good. we have hundreds of numbers so i dont want to do it one by one. any help would be much appreciated, thanks.
btw i cannot do a factory reset. ive seen in the past you go to manage apps-and clear data from contacts storage, but that option is greyed out....
I would think the first thing to do is go to menu>settings>accounts and uncheck the sync contacts option for each account. Then go to settings>apps>manage apps>all and find contacts. On my phone (apex gb) I can select clear data.

[Q] Deleting all contacts

Rooted KF, I want to setup contacts to sync with google using the contact sync adapter. I read that the contacts should be cleared out first so they don't duplicate with google. Is there an easy way to delete all the contacts? I tried deleting contacts cache and data and that didn't work.
THANKS

Nevermind, I am good... I did a little trick, when started the contacts on the kf syncing with google contacts I did get the duplicates in GC. Then I accessed GC over the web and did a restore to an hour ago, when the kf synched again the duplicates are all gone.
