Can a ROM interfere with HTC Sense? - HD2 General

First I apologize if this has been answered in a prior thread but my phone is my only internet access at the moment and my Sense has crashed making it VERY difficult to do any searching.
So anyway, today I went to unlock my phone and it was frozen. I did a soft reset and when it came on Sense would not work. I've been running the Elegancia GTX ROM for over a week now just perfectly then today sense crashed. So i wanted to know if reflashing the ROM could fix it or if its a hardware issue? any input would be MOST appreciated. Or any fixes you know of. Thanks.

Try this...

if your having that much problems with the rom, flash a new rom,
(i prefer core cell series) and when you flash it do a hard reset...
and it should be fine, maybe a program you installed ain't compatible with sense.

If the only issue is with sense (i.e. everything works just fine when sense is off), then it's defintely software related and not hardware, so you can rule that out.
What's probably happend is that one or more of the manila files that sense is "made of" has gotten corrupted or deleted. There's over 3000 of those files (if I remember correctly), so finding exactly which ones is probably impractical.
I would start by uninstalling any recently installed apps/tweaks. This may not solve the problem, but it's the easiest thing to try first. If that doesn't work, then hard-reset the current ROM you're on now...just backup any crucial data from the phone first, and catalog your installed cabs etc for reapplying afterwards. Then, if you still can't get sense to behave, go hunting for another ROM to try.
Also note that any time you flash a ROM to your phone, it's always a good idea to do a hard-reset immediately, before using the new ROM, just to help insure stability of the flash.

Hey thanks Phunkee,
I got it figured out. What it was... I was using the Co0kies HTE that came with the ROM and when I changed the 'custom operator text' and the 'main text color' (to red) it messes with sense. I dont know why. But yesterday I did a hard reset, it fixed it. So before I installed anything I decided to try that same step again and what do ya know...Sense crashed.
I think I saw something about using Red in the forum last night as I was looking for a new ROM but I may have dreamed that haha. Either way, I now know not to do that again. Im running the Omega Series Alexander ROM now, I changed the 'custom user text' (not to red, but still custom) and so far all is well.
Great advice though, thanks for the help! And ya I ALWAYS do the hard reset after flashing, and Task 29 PRIOR to flashing. Yesterday I was oping to avoid a hard reset just because I hate having to re-setup everything back to the way I like it.

i had that happen twice on elegancia gtx last week and no i didnt mess with my operator text

Did you mention it to Steve? It might help him to fix it if more than one person is experiencing it...
For now I switched to Omega Series, getting the same speed and performance so its working out pretty well so far.

il let him know, i switched to omega gtx as well, much better battery so far

Calendar question

A time ago I updated my original HTC ROM, which solved the TF3D 'calendar problem' (Didn't refresh at 0.00 hour).
With the new original HTC ROM it worked perfect.
Since 2 weeks the calendar refresh problem is back again..
Does someone know how to solve this problem again without comple re-installing of the HTC ROM?
Have you tried backing up all your data via Activesync and then hard resetting the Touch HD ? Hard reset works wonders!

I was wondering if there is any option without resetting ;-)
i have the same problem.
after the update, it worked fine, but now it's the same as before.
my appointments for today are displayd as a appointment for tomorrow.
i wonder: is this problem solved in a cooked rom ? this should be a reason to upgrade to a cooked one, but my experience with my previous phones is: a cooked rom always created another problem, like bluetooth, wifi, volumesettings.. etc etc
Others will probably have better arguments, but I got to give a thumbs-up for the ROMs on this board. I find flashing extremely useful. I did briefly enjoy re-flashing to a newer stock ROM, but soon returned to the cooks of the ROMs you most hear mentioned on this board, as they have tweaked their creations to near-perfection.
(I usually flash mine once every months/two months, by the way, mainly because I find it straightforward and not *too* time-consuming, and returns the HD to the pristine conditions of a brand new device (useful if you try out lots of different apps).

Why does phone hard reset so often?

No matter what rom I use, somehow something eventually goes astray (at least I am assuming) or hangs and the phone reboots back to setup.
Sometimes I can go a day or so before it hard resets. I thought maybe it was an isolated rom issue, yet it happens with any room. This also happens to another person I know with a HD2.
Why does this happen? Is there a way to prevent this damn "fail-safe" mechanism? I grow tired of reinstalling all my stuff again and again.
Hi DrewX2,
You'll probably find that a program or tweak (or anything that you can install on your phone) is actually causing these "hard resets" and not the device itself.
I have been using a stock Rom for approximately 1 month and my phone has never hard reset. To be honest I think I've just been lucky this time with what I have chosen to install onto my device.
My best advice is to install programs 1 by 1 and test them for a period of time (personally I would be patient and wait for 1 day). That way you can isolate which program is causing the hard reset.
Of course there is a very very slim chance that it could be a hardware fault, but I wouldn't bank on this. Hope this helps
Sounds like you have problematic hardware to me. I'd try and get a replacement
registry changes
i had big problem when activating some apps to do there recomended registry changes ie
Pocket mechanic professional or sktools
so now i only got sktools running but newer edition for other uses not to try and change any registry stuffs.
iv stock rom and it now runs well but im still very reserved and careful as i think i know the pain your experiencing > makes one feel like throwing it out the window
Try re-flashing to a stock ROM, and see if the problem goes away.
Thanks for all the responses.
Let's just pretend it is some .cab I have installed (I mostly install a few visual modification cabs).
Does the response my phone is having seem like a normal response? Or does your phone never hard reset because of some .cab that has been installed.
I am gonna lay off on adding new stuff to my phone to see if that can prevent these hard resets.
Never had my phone do a hard reset in all the many years I've owned Winmo phones, and my HD2 is no exception.
My own guess is it's a hardware issue but nonetheless I'd try running the phone for a few days with minimal or no third party apps on it, just in case one of them is being nasty, but I've never heard of an app spontaneously causing a hard reset, TBH.
It's nothing to do with apps you have intstalled and nothing to do with your device. You say every rom you instal does this, but I'm willing to bet the stock roms aren't?
As I understand it, it's something to do with the implementation of SSPL. My best suggestion to you would be to flash the new Hard SPL and then to be safe flash a stock rom (1.61 for the newest radio) and then flash your custom rom of choice. I can almost guarantee you your problem will be sorted.
Let us know how it goes
I had spontaneous hard resets on my X1 with Itje's and Valkyrie's ROMs. Wow, it was annoying. I never pinned it down - mainly because I didn't have the time and needed my phone to be working. I flashed Energy ROMs and never had a problem with any of them.
I've also not had any problems with my Leo but I'm still on 1.48 with only a few visual mods.

No it's really not mate! Sorry but that is just unnecessary Microsoft bashing!
I was having exactly the same problems last week and reflashing a stock rom before the custom rom fixed it.
Never had this problem!
I've had my phone for about 3 weeks now and have never had this happen even once! I am running a TUR 1.61 ROM which I changed to after a week on stock Tmobile UK ROM
You wouldn't have a problem Creed. The Turkish 1.61 rom is a stock rom.
I suppose it's time to flash hardspl and perhaps upgrade the radio to see if that will fix it. And yes this only occurs with custom roms to my knowledge (in my case).

Well you should upgrade the radio anyway, because the battery life is much better, but definitely HardSPL and if you want to be safe flash a stock rom before the cooked one and always remember to hard reset after the initial install. It may seem like a pain in the arse, having to do all that, but it sure beats the frustration of unexpected hard resets.

Frozen screen when calling

Hi. I've had these problems with my htc hd2, I've had the sms probs, but that got fixed after talking to you guys And now when people call me, or I call other people it freezes, im able to stop the conversation (which doesn't actually start), reset the machine (red button on the back or pull-out-battery) and then call back... This is really annoying, it has happened twice today, one time yesterday, and one time every day before.. I don't call people or receive alot of calls, but always the first call "****s up". Then its ok for the next call. Doesn't happen to anything else (yet), only calling. It's not that big of a problem, but my bills are keeping to get longer seeing that I have to call back all the time. :/

I think the information you are providing is just a bit to little. you have explained your problem but you are not telling what radio and rom you are using.
in general have you tried a hard reset? or is the problem also there with your sd card in the phone? people have problems with phone freezes because of sd cards. especially the larger cards.
Oh yeah, sorry, I'm abit new to this.
Rom: 1.66.409.1 (NOR)
OS: 5.2.21869
Radio: 2.06.51.07
I always use a SD-card which is the standard 2gb which came with the phone, i could go some days without, and see if it works. Unless you have any other ideas?
Haven't tried a hard reset, doesn't that mean I'd have to upgrade it again?
I suffered from this last week & almost tested the bounciness of the phone I got so annoyed with it. As you'll see from my postcount I am an absolute noob but...I removed a couple of custom taskbars I had installed & bizzarrely everything returne to normal. probably a complete coincidence which I'm sure the experts here will confirm
Clever.. But "Custom taskbars" what did you mean by that, I'm more of a noob than you ;b
Hi, the taskbar is the info' strip display at the top of the phone. The standard one is a "clunky" black & white design. I installed some fancy, coloured ones which I now know should only be installed on HD2s with winmo6.5."whatever number it's at now" installed. Mine is a stock 1.66 ROM with winmo 6.5 device. Like I said the two may be completely unconnected but - touch wood(Ooh err missus), I've not had a call freeze since uninstalling them. I can't believe I've been outnoobed either lol! Best of luck...
Oh, yeah I've got the stock "black 'n white chunky" one :/ so there must be something else
I'll keep an eye on this thread for updates, of course I tempted sodding fate & the bloody thing locked up on me about half an hour after posting my reply. Cover off & soft reset & we're off again but this is soooooooooooo annoying when it does happen. best of luck to you.
Dunno if this is alowed, but Bump? (bring up my post )

what upgrades are you talking about? if you've installed any apps or customisations then you'll have to reinstall those after a hard reset, but otherwise it will just blow away all your info and give you a clean slate to start from with whatever ROM/Radio combo you have. definitely worth doing if you haven't done that yet.
otherwise maybe try upgrading the radio? or another ROM if that doesn't work...

Try flashing to one of the latest Radios.
I had this problem when I was on a very old Radio 2.04 with the latest custom Roms.
Well, I have the latest rom, and thats the only rom I can get :S and isn't the radio upgraded with the rom ? if not, where do I upgrade the radio ? (radio: 2.06.51.07)
radios are in one of the stickies in the ROM forum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611787
if you want info on how to flash it then read thru the relevant stickies
Finally understood and downloaded/flashed a new radio (2.08), after hours of reading and decrypting "nerd language" (no offence of course). We'll see if it helped tomorrow, if I have no probs tomorrow it *might* have been fixed!
TMOUS user here. Have had the HD2 for a total of 5 days. Making phone calls, it freezes repeatedly. I will receive a phone call(feel it vibrate, try to answer, and it just locks. Can still hit the Home button and hit HD2SoftReset, but this really sucks.
R:2.08.50.08?2
G 15.34.50.07U
D 2.10.82076 8G
Hopefully that's the radio info you need. It is a stock TMOUS rom. Installed a handful of Apps, and loaded up some music on my microSD card. Any suggestions?

Just an answer to my question.

Phone freezes no matter what I try. Stumped
I have a question that seems not to be able to get answered where ever I post it. so please forgive me for posting here if this is not the correct place. I have been trying android from the beginning and I've tried everyones builds. from winmo to droid and different radios to find the right combination. The problem i keep running into is that my phone freezes up no matter what i do. I tried the letama .2 & .3. This problem even occurs in winmo even with the sd out. I may get a full day out of it with no problems then the problem returns. Right know i'm running MDJ Froyo revolution v.1.3 and winmo ozrom 5.10 wwe and radio 2.10.50.26. Also, wipe the sd clean every time i switch builds or upgrade. Haven't figured out how to do logs yet. still searching and reading to try and teach myself how to be more useful around the forums. Thanks and I appreciate all the hard work the DEVS put in. That's why i follow the rules except this time.

Obey the rules!
Naa, just kidding. But if your phone's freezing even in WinMo there's something really messed up. Did you try to make a task 29 and flash your ROM again? That might be helpful.. If not, turn your phone back to original standards (ROM, HSPL, Radio must be as given by the factory) and go to your retailor to use your guarantee if you still have.

I like you sense of humor. thank you for taking the time and commenting. there has been 30+ people that have viewed this and haven't even responded. But, some can ask like where is the download link and we all now where its at. always at the beginning of the thread, but they get all kind of replies. It just makes no sense to me when someone has a legit question they can't get much help. don't really understand that. Thought we were here to help each other.I don't believe that its an issue hardware issue. i believe its more software than anything. It comes and goes. My phone was going thru a period where it would reboot all by itself with no apparent reason. Then all of a sudden it stopped it and hasn't done that for 4 to 6 weeks.
really 97 views and no insight.
you tried the stock factory rom?? It might be hardware. You will be surprised a tiny drop of water inside your phone will slowly mess up your phone through a long period of time.
Are you on tmobile? I will try to look for a stock rom for you.
BTW, what do you mean by freezing? it hiccups or you have to do a battery pull.

btw, your title is a curious one, that is why you have many views and received little to no response. If they can't help you they won't post anything. But I will try my best to see whats going on.
if your suffering from the freezes in winmo and android then you I think that you need to forget about android for the time being and concentrate on getting a stable WM set up........
If you havent already done so then try a hard reset and see if that helps.......
try booting and running your phone with and without your sd card........
with and without your sim card........
if it still happens after the hard reset then you will need to reflash your WM rom, if you plan on using the phone mostly for android then I would opt for a basic rom like the energy reference series or one of duttys roms.....
there are many reasons why your phone might freeze and you need to spend time trying all situations to figure out what makes it freeze..........
if it still happens after the reset/reflash then we can only assume that it is a serious problem which may well require a warranty replacement.....

I have tried all that you have suggested. The curious thing to me is that it seems to come and go. It first started with the energy rom and it's also happened with dutty's as well. if you guys know how to pull logs that devs need is possible you could give me a run down on how and then maybe i can find out if it is hardware. My phone has never been near water. i'm very careful about that. I'm using ozrom now. This is the 3rd HD2 i've had. the last one lost all touch response. I just have a feeling its software, but i just have a gut feeling on that. Thanks everyone though for your input i greatly appreciate it and keep it coming.
BTW, what do you mean by freezing? it hiccups or you have to do a battery pull.
I have to pull the battery. Then i may have to leave it out for a minute or two maybe longer then replace battery before it will load windows. it will just show the splash screen.
was this happening even when you were running the stock rom?
Have you tried to reformat your SD Card? I have two, and when I used my original card received with my HD2, TMOUSA, it would freeze. Since I reformatted and use new and old card, no problems for over a month.

YES

yes. I have two the 16 that came with it and an 8. it happens with both. I reformat every time i switch builds.
I see that your using radio 2.10 and that caused my HD2 to freeze a lot. change your radio to 2.12 or 2.14
I use the same Android build as you but with the elegancia gtx wm rom with radio 2.14 and after upgrading the radio the freezing (SOD) stopped.
I started using the radio 2.15.50 and have had no problems whatsoever. Also unchecking auto rotate and auto britghtness helps. Sometimes redownloading and installing your Android helps if you got a bad download the first time.
Update
now runnning enery extreme from 11/5 and mdj desire hd with his newest kernel smartass and the only time it freezes in during a call. usually anywhere from 5 - 15 minutes into the call. Anyone have any insight two a possible solution?
This is what I would do:
1. Task 29
2. Flash a slim WM ROM such as the one mentioned in my signature.
3. Flash a NEW RADIO...at least 2.12 or even higher.
3a. Install NOTHING. NOTHING AT ALL. Just answer and make calls. Period.
4. Test that build for two days. If I have freezups, then my phone is bad and I would flash the stock rom and radio and return it. If it does not freezup goto 5.
5. Completely reformat my SD card to Fat32 32kb (or 64kb if you think it affects stuttering in music).
6. Since you and I are both in the US, I recommend getting an Android that has a built in TMO MMS fix such as the new MDJ build (with link to MMS fix) or the fine MooMoo build or even Bluetopia.
7. Test the basic features in Android for two days minimum and see if I get freezeups (after disabling auto-rotate and wi-fi on the Android build as well as completely shutting off all radios in WM).
8. Be glad I got this far, and slowly reinstall my apps, testing each thoroughly for freezing.

Thanks for taking the time to post this i appreciate it. I have tried it all. It appears to be getting better. I have been using MDJ's kernels since he posted them with his desire hd build. I have always felt that it was software related and not hardware. It appears to me to be caused maybe by the data drops from ppp. Not sure though till i teach myself how to do that. thanks again though.
Turned out to be a hardware issue. Got my new replacement and it works flawless. Can't believe the fun I was missing. At least it was a great learning experience.

[Q] Random problem forces hard reset

Since flashing Duttys WM6.5 Leo Holy Grail ROM to my HD I have been very impressed with it's performance, 99% of the time it is responsive and stable and seems happy even though several programs are running. It has made my HD a really nice phone.
But every now and again something weird will happen, usually activesync reports a problem, or all of my contacts vanish, sometimes files on the device (not SD) cannot be accessed. So I soft reset and it doesn't boot, it will get stuck on the orange splash screen.
In total it has happened about 4 times since I flashed the ROM on Dec 29. It happened last night and eventually the device loaded the background picture, then popped up an error dialogue saying something about being unable to open a file, there was no mention of the file name. I did a soft reset and it then automatically performed a hard reset.
The other times the phone just hangs on the orange splash screen every time, causing me to perform a hard reset manually. Sometimes it will work fine for a good few days, or sometimes fail after only 1 day.
Its really annoying. I cant seem to get a HTC that works at the moment. My TP2 is rubbish, I've tried several ROM's and it is consistently unstable, so I go back to my HD which was always reliable... And now this happens.
please Help or I'll be forced to turn to the darkside and get an iphone and I really don't want to do that!
Why not just return to the "reliable" firmware version used previously?
I'm not a fan of custom roms or 6.5, especially on this underpowered model, it's definitely the most reliable handheld I own or have owned with oem roms though, especially without it's resource gobbling pretty face on.
Not really the most helpful answer, but i suppose i cannot argue the reasoning behind it.
In defence of this ROM it is BRILLIANT when it is working, i'd actually argue that the device feels smoother with this ROM than it did with the stock Orange UK ROM.

Have you tried asking your question in one of Duttys threads. You may get a better response. Also, try flashing a different rom
Thanks.
Since posting the message the problem has not come back.
I have been thinking that there is a possibility that my server was hacked, i noticed a few things had changed on the server, i also had notices when i logged in to facebook and paypal, informing me that someone from New York had accessed my account. the server and facebook used to have the same password.
Is it possible that the problem i had was caused by a hacker on my exchange server issuing a command to reset the device? i know it can do something like this to protect data in the event of a phone going missing.
what does the device do if exchange server performs this routine?
Please help me find this problem... i dont want to buy an Iphone!
Ok I tried a different Rom, this time i used one of KWBR's:
http://media.celogeek.com/roms/kwbr/..._5.7_Sense.rar
a month down the line and its just started to go wrong again.
this time, i find that the device slows down a little bit, prompting me to soft reset, when it boots i find that my contacts are missing, active sync will not load properly, it briefly flashes on screen but lower 1/3rd of active sync window is missing (appears transparent or black) only way to get contacts back and active sync working again is hard reset!
Anyone got any ideas what might be going on?
its been doing this now on both ROM's but i have no idea what may be causing it, as far as additional software i only install a few apps: Slimcontrol 1.5, Core player & GcZ2 (geocaching tool) which all have been running fine before.
