Anyone having charging issues? - Droid X General

A friend of mine just picked up a Droid X today and he's having problems.
First, the charger it came with doesn't appear to charge, there is no charging indicator light.
I attempted to use a number of USB chargers, the first from my HTC Hero, another from an iPad, and a third is a cheap Chinese AC charger with a USB port that I picked up for my EVO.
The only charger that turns on the green light on the top is the cheap Chinese one.
If I plug it into my computer, I can also get the green light to come on, but it doesn't appear to be charging it. When the phone is on using the cheap charger, the phone appears to work, but says on the lock screen to plug the phone in.
Further, the lock screen is not responsive. We let it charge with the phone off for about a half hour with the green light on, the phone boot up and had a little bit of life and the screen did work, then it suddenly turned off and won't boot past the Motorola logo (just flashes for a couple of seconds then disappears.)
So, whats the verdict? Hardware problem or is anyone else experiencing this? The phone did completely die, so I wonder if that caused a problem of some kind.
Do you have a Green light when charging with the phone off? Does the light flash red when it's on and charging?
Thanks for the help!

I plugged it into my home computer and nothing happened vs. being able to charge my computer and nothing. Although the phone was about half way charged before I plugged at work, vs 10-15% at home.

Mine didn't charge while plugged into my netbook, but does charge while plugged into my PC, and definitely charges while plugged into the wall charger.

Update: After using the wall charger and fully charging it, I connected the Droid X to my computer and it now syncs up. Maybe the amount of battery power matters?

I don't think the green blinking LED is a charging indicator. Mine charges without it....but I notice when I was charging it the first time, it was going off when I had an unread text message. Is everyone sure the green LED is supposed to be a charging indicator? Mine's charging right now according to the bar on top when I turn it on while it's plugged into my computer.

I'm having a charging issue with my car charger.
When I plug it in to the car the audio volume drops to almost inaudible and the voice commands don't respond anymore.
This is with all the volume sliders set all the way up.
I have to reboot the phone in order to get it to work again.
I've charged it connected to my PC at home and work and it works fine with those.

Wow, the OP totally describe my problem i had too. I went back to Verizon and got another battery. My first battery wouldn't charge above 50% and the second came with 80% and we tried charging it at the store and it never went higher than 80%.I read on another forum that the charging indicator only reads at every 10% intervals, so that may be the problem. The rep and I at Verizon was watching it to see if it would move up to 81% so we would know it was working(beside the bubbles moving animation) and it didn't and we gave up, I will see what happens when I charge it tonite with the AC plug for the first time.

So the green LED light is not a charging indicator. Apparently, there is no charging indicator at all.
We left the phone off and plugged in with the stock charger, no light, but it did gradually move up.
I did some searching on the Motorola forums and another user ran into the same issue, he said that leaving the phone off and charging it for an extended period of time solved the problem.
I have no idea what the green light meant when it was plugged into my cheap Chinese charger, it must have been nothing.
It wasn't a text message or any other kind of notification since it was on only when the phone was completely off.
Before he left with the phone it was up to 90%. A brief press of the power button brought the phones battery state up, but didn't boot the phone.
Hope this helps anyone else with issues. Just plug it in and let it sit overnight.

I had a similar issue the first day.after overnight charge all seems normal for day two.

The only charging indicator is the lock screen part if you just turn it on it will tell you at what point it is charged.

It will occasionally show 5% intervals when it gets below 20% (I've seen 20, 15, 10, and 5% intervals).
I've noticed my phone doesn't like charging from a computer while the battery is really low. Once it's had a little bit of a boost from the wall charger, it will charge fine off the computer.

I just changed to a new one today.a friend of mine is having the sand issues. As so did i. It seems its not the battery its a short on the ground on some phones. Its pretty awkward but it has only been a handful from a batch of thousands that were released. So were in good money.

When you said charge fast you're referring to wall charge? Car charge? Or usb charge?

Stock X
Hey guys,
Figured I'd swing over here and give this a bump for a buddy of mine. Seein if this may be a slightly common issue.
The situation(for him): All on stock phone NO ROOT
- No charge on wall/home charger. Shows charge indication but does not actually charge whatsoever.
- No charge using PC usb cord to charge.
Again everything is stock and not currently running any app killers or really anything out of the ordinary as I can tell. The only thing he has purchased and is running that I am aware of is Launcher Pro. The issue has been brought to the attention of Verizon which is his carrier and he just received his 4th phone! Honestly thats the only reason I'm posting an inquiry into this hear. A simple google search results shows others with similar issues(posted link at bottom). He has purchased a new battery and wall/home charger along with another USB cord. All 3 phones he has had produced the same issue with all of the charge accessories(4th phone just received so no tests as of yet, but i put money on it doing the same thing). Verizon has been willing to replace every phone so thats not a problem but seriously! Is that the only answer?
any help is appreciated in advance

There are two charging indicators, no lights! One is on the status bar, you'll see a lightning bolt through the battery meter, and on the lock screen it will say charging as well with a %.

Absolutely, yes sir. Both indicators(lightning bolt in battery, and battery charge indicators) light up and show charging. Although once phone is unplugged it will keep whatever the charge level indicates for a random amount of time usually between 1min-15mins then the battery indicator drops immediately and shows an almost dead battery. As in charge shows 80%, unplug and within mins phone shows 10%.
Also:
- There are no other indicators of charging other than those mentioned (as it should be).
- The phone connects to PC just fine for mass storage. Files transfer with no problems.
thanx again!

So... which one is it? First you say no indicators, and now there's indicators but it just doesn't hold charge. is VZW replacing the phone or the battery? sounds like a bad battery to me.

My apologies you are correct *edited post* i meant to say it does show charging as in you see the lightning bolt and everything even the battery icon fills to show a "fuller" battery although that stat drops almost immediately after unplugging.
As in replacements they replace the phone and battery as well. I know its the 3rd phone so far with the same problem.

Question about charging the phone

Hi there! I just bought a Cingular 8525 Unlocked phone and absolutely love it! After having it for two weeks, so far i have upgraded to the 2600mah extended battery and i am currently using PDACorner v20 rom (nonRBSN)
Now to my question, is it bad for the phone i keep plugging it in randomly throughout the day on the charger or USB? I upload files sometimes and i just leave the phone plugged in the computer or I would sometimes charge the phone when it hits 70% and unplug when done and would charge again before going to bed.
Also, is it ok if i leave the phone on the charger even if the light turns green? sometimes charging would be done around times when im knocked out....and usually dont unplug it until i have to leave.
Thanks for your help/replies.

Well, I don't think that's such an easy question to answer. There have been the following reports:
1
Attempting to charge the battery with either PC USB or non approved charger (500mA) if the phone has less than 10% charge can lock up the charging circuit and result in a Red no charge LED showing.
2
Leaving the phone on charge overnight for example can result in the curious situation of having a flat battery and RED LED showing in the morning.
3
In general problems can result if 500mA 5v chargers are used instead of the 1000mA official charger - particularly if they are used when phone charge is low.
Now despite all the above, I regularly charge overnight without problems - and clearly that means the green LED is on for most of the night. I frequently top up the phone with the PC USB and do sometimes use a non standard charger. I have only ever had the RLOD red light of death once and was able to kick start it eventually.
I generally do not let the phone fall below 20% - but even when it does I have had no problems.
Mike
Thanks for the reply. I never let the phone fall below 40% so i should be ok on that. But when i bought the extended battery it came with a wall charger but its 500mA.....im guessing its ok for the battery since it was packaged with it.
But i might look into buying a charger from ATT. Leaving it charged till i wake up should be ok then....thanks!

Phone doesn't charge

When i plug my phone to either pc or ac the yellow light blinks and the battery reads 100%. Usually the yellow light is solid and the battery show as if its plugged in. Can someone please help?
Have you examined the contacts on the usb plug and where the battery snaps in?
That is usually the middle contact for the battery.
Pull the battery cover and battery out and inspect the battery connectors. My guess in the middle one is bent forward. Bend it back gently and be careful if you have to pull the battery.
The soft reset button is a better option if you just need to do a battery pull.
Are you using the standard HD2 battery that came with your phone? I bought a cheap $5 backup battery and I have this exact same issue when I try to charge it. The stock battery works perfectly though.
hot
I have the same problem, but only when I use internet on the phone for a period of time. When the antenna is used continuously it gets very warm, and I noticed that's the moment it quits loading and flashes the light. Maybe the battery gets too hot?
so what is the solution - will not charge from network charger nor from usb - when i pluged network charger for whole noght it was blinking green and orange and indicator wrote 100 percent of charge but when i looked into battery properties it showed me 9 percent and no charge - so by night it discharged fully and no answer on any doings
Some things that may indicate the flashing lights.
orange blinking is overheating.. but don't worry it does that and then it will pause charging for a bit and charge in waves rather then 1 cycle to let the phone cool down..it wont be a previous gen devices where it stops charging or gets extremely hot.

Solid green light when the device is connected to the power adaptor or a computer and the battery is fully charged.
Solid amber light when the battery is being charged.

The only solution I heard of that works is to do a soft reset.
An alternative is to switch off the phone, then after 10 minutes or so plug it into the charger. This means that the charging circuitry is only supplying power to charge the battery and not power the phone as well.

I'm not asking you to remove the battery. Either try a soft reset or charge the phone with the phone switched off ten minutes prior to charging.

[Q] Help! Battery won't charge

Need some feedback, any one has had a bad battery yet? I had mine charging up to 85% yesterday and went back to bed thinking that today (sunday) morning will wake up and do some early stuff but I woke up late and had a dead Streak next to me. I left it charging overnight (I know it was only 15%) but you never know when you're going to need that extra juice. I tried turning it on, no luck, took the batt out tried turning on with only the mains plugged in, no go, I had blinking LEDS for a short moment then it turned off and that was it until I decided to jump start the phone (I don't recommend doing this to no one) with a BB Bold Battery (3.7V 1500mAh) all of a sudden I get the battery with exclamation mark, like I had a dead battery, I've only had the device for 2 weeks, also this is a Beta Unit I bought "AS-IS" but the problem was a simple restore and not the battery. now I manage to charge the battery in a raw way, just hot wired into a 4.2v DC. now the big question...
I'm at 40% battery it is draining very little, I would even say it is under normal operation, but i can't tell I don't have a SIM on it ATM. but I checked on "spare parts" to see status of the battery and it all seems ok but the bit that says BATTERY STATUS: discharging
No matter where I plugged the wire it is discharging, the phone is being detected on windows/mac any computer I plug, the phone does detect where the source is coming it says AC when I plug into the charger that came with, if I plug it into the USB of the computer it does says USB but it will never say charging, I even transfered files to the phone to test the wire, seems to me I have a crappy battery but just need more feedback, anyone has had this problem before? on any phone should I call Michael Dell and order another batt?
P.S. I have a BB Javelin had the same problem did jump started the battery and now the mobile is charging no probs and it DOES hold charge.
UPDATE: Ok guys any of you running 2.1 (8105) on your USA Beta (probably regular too) and have this issue about not charging, I went back to 1.6 (4399) issue is gone, I also had the crazy screen couldn't unlock/answer phone, will see if that is gone too, more than likely it is but I'm not 100% sure.
if it wont charge using usb or mains but only by jump starting it, then the streaks charging circuit is most probably f***ed.

Brand new Atrix won't charge. Green LED.

I installed/flashed Gingerblur yesterday and it was working fine for the whole day. At night, I put it back into it's case because I'm still waiting for my New Screen Protector and Case to come. I take really good care of it. Then I did not use the phone for the whole day. After having a really bad day, I started up my brand new Atrix for some fun and it was already at around 5% battery left so I went ahead and tried to charge it. I noticed plugging it into the computer did not work, so I tried wall charging it and that also did not work.
To sum it up,
Symptoms:
-Green Led for 2-3 seconds when I hold down the top main button then shuts off led. Note: Only happens/works if the phone is plugged into the wall.
-Green Led for 4 or more seconds if I plug in wall charger then shuts off led.
-No visual image on screen after battery drained out at all.
What can I do? I don't think I bricked it since it was working perfectly yesterday. Is there anything I can do? I have tried removing battery with no avail, it is plugged in to the wall charger still for the past hour.
This is a very weird problem and I don't know the exact answer..I just know i bricked my atrix before (failed to flash on a full battery) and couldn't charge the dead battery even on AC.
I ended up buying a universal battery charger from radioshack and then returning it once I got my battery fully charged and flashed the rom. Haven't had any battery problems since.
Hope this helps
Thanks, I will try this but it is night time right now. I hope someone else has had experience of this before and can guide me to any other directions.
I did not fail a flash, unless the flash can fail even if Gingerblur was working 100% before it failed. I don't know if thats possible.
Are you using the usb cable/charger that came with the phone?
I know it sounds ridiculous but the phone does NOT charge on any of my existing MicroUSB cables or wall chargers (used to have a nexus one). Pretty bummed about that :/
Yeah I am using the one that came with it.
I also want to update that I've tried my sister's HTC Inspire charger and an old Samsung charger I have left around.
Both are USB to wall Adapters (I am not using the same wall power adapter for each charger) so I wonder if I need the one that plugs directly into the wall?
Yeah, you probably just have a dysfunctional battery or charger, either way, you're going to have to diagnose which one is the problem (fingers crossed that it isn't the phone)
/e:
it sounds like its not the charger, from your most recent post.
I think your phone is the problem, it's not processing how to charge the battery from the cable.
Common problem. You need at least 850mA to charge the phone, so older usb ports wont work. The wall charger is actually working. Pull the battery out, put it back in, plug in the wall charger(don't press any buttons!) and let it sit for about 30min to get a decent charge. Should boot up after that.

Hm, it's been charging for over an hour now and still hasn't turned on. But I did not do it exactly as you said. I unplugged the battery acouple times but I always try to hold the "fingerprint" on button right after plugging it in. I'll try not pressing anything this time. Thanks, I'll post back if I get any results.
The phone should turn on if charging, you don't need 850mA either. Standard USB is 500 and it just charges slower. I know this for a fact as I just charged it like that.
Take it into a store or contact where you bought it from.
Plugging in phone while off: Green LED for a bit, moto logo, battery icon
Power on, no charger : green light for a bit longer, moto logo, boot animation.
Try an at&t stores charger and see if theyll let you charge the battery.

With a dead battery you need 850 mAH. The phone needs 850 mA ti boot and it needs to boot to charge (strange yes but software controls the charge).
I would suggest trying all the chargers you can (the Moto one may be giving you to little amps) and if that does not work you can try to either 1) make a dev cable (post on how to in the dev section, though it requires soldering and such so you may not be able to do it if you don't have supplies) or 2) get a charger for the battery (one to directly charge the battery vice through the phone).
The battery method did not work, I did not try to hold the main button until 1 hour later to no avail. I'm going to Best Buy tomorrow for a replacement.
Edit: Oops..Too late to the party! I had the same issue that was fixed when I used a good quality micro-usb charger!
850ma? You sure?
I've charged and booted my phone from dead on a 700ma charger and 500ma usb on numerous occasions.
U need not worry .. put it in a wall charger .. and let it sit dere for atleast an hour .. the green led will come up when charge level reaches around 50% or more .. be patient ..

I had the exact same issue the other day. I forgot to put my phone on charge at night, and it was dead in the morning. I plugged into the wall with my Moto charger, the phone turned on and went right to CWM. I rebooted from there, the phone showed 5% battery level, and within 10-15 minutes was at 20%.
I thought it strange my phone went right to the old Tenfar CWM even though I uninstalled it after unlocking my phone and installing the latest CWM from Tenfar.
It does seem that the shut off with the battery is 5%. I am assuming this is the safety factor built into either the Android OS, or the batteries themselves, as they do have circuits in them much like mini computers to shut them off before 100% discharge, as this will kill a Lithium Ion battery.
Some simple facts regarding the Lithium Ion batteries:
•They start degrading as soon as they leave the factory. They will only last two or three years from the date of manufacture whether you use them or not.
•They are extremely sensitive to high temperatures. Heat causes lithium-ion battery packs to degrade much faster than they normally would.
•If you completely discharge a lithium-ion battery, it is ruined.
•A lithium-ion battery pack must have an on-board computer to manage the battery. This makes them even more expensive than they already are.
•There is a small chance that, if a lithium-ion battery pack fails, it will burst into flame.
What I would like to know is why some people have problems getting a charge back in the Atrix after a complete discharge. There I was at 20% after 10-15 minutes using the Moto wall charger, while other people can't even get their phones to turn on after an hour on the wall charger.
I have the same problem, tried everything and finally found a solution
Get a warranty replacement.
The phone won't turn on, so they don't know what you did to it.
Got my new phone today, popped the dead battery in and voila, it charges !
Sometimes it's like people say, it's because of the charge, but your phone probably have issue, just get a replacement
I let it charge all night and it still has the same symptoms. Going to Best Buy in an hour when it opens.
When I get my new phone, should I Gingerblur it again or am I going to face this same issue? Was this software related or hardware?
Gingerblur was relatively easy to do, but I don't want to risk killing my phone a second time.
UPDATE: Got a replacement phone. Complementing whether I want to Gingerblur it again because that's the only thing that could have caused the battery issue other than it being hardware related.

You can try it again should work fine for you. If not...
You can always use their phone and your "dead battery" and visa versa theirs into your phone. Then if same issue happens. Just warranty the phone. If your in warranty do it. I've had g1's for no reason not charge. Led says it, os says it, yet NONE of my working batteries were getting any charge off the phone. Especially when the phone was 3 days old. Warranty.... if its free do it.

Yes if warranty then ok .. But we are here to do the impossible.. I just reconditioned a new battery just so it can turn phone on in same instance for a friend. So yes batteries and phones new can have charging issues.
There is an issue with smart-phones and batteries and has been since day one. If you are here then evidently you either love these phones and want to mod them or you are like me and love playing with electronics. Real simple if you in the smart-phone world there are a few rules of thumb..
1.) Never begin working without a fully charged battery (some say 51% or better I say 100% )
2.) Buy , borrow , get an external battery charger and/or stronger wall charger
3.) Extra batteries are always good.
4.) Read the damn stickies and wiki's ... People have taken plenty of time creating them. Those who know me know I have written some myself.
5.) The biggest problem is located between the chair and the keyboard .... (lol)

[Q] Charging Problem

Hi,
By battery was running low so i turned the tablet off, plugged it in and went out. When i came back i turned it on only to find that the charge was at the same level as when i left it. I first thought it was the charger, but after testing it was fine. On plugging the charger back in the battery symbol comes up and shows that it is full, before the screen goes black for a short period before the symbol comes back up again showing it is full (Im unsure if it normally does when charged as i cant remember)
I then turned the tablet back on and left it to charge. The device charged slowly, but when i checked the battery status the tablet claimed that it was NOT charging.
Im worried that when it runs down it will not charge to turn back on. On the other hand it might recognise the battery is flat and charge normally.....
Anyone got any suggestions?
Update: I left it on and plugged in overnight and it charged back up to 100%, albeit very slowly (I woke up once and checked and it had only reached 75% after about 4 hours).
So still not sure what to do. Factory reset?
Even i had the same problem
Try changing ur usb cable,
it worked for me
Stock USB cable lasted one day for me. Absolute garbage. No problems using the stock cable from my ancient HP Touchpad.

Sorry to jump on a fairly of thread, but....
Hi Barking Mad,
Did you ever get to the bottom of your particular charging issue? I've bought a TN7from ebay, and I'm having ng exactly the same problems as you described. Not really charging when turned off and the screen showing the charging symbol for a couple of seconds before going black and then showing the same symbol again. It will charge whilst turned on, albeit it very slowly.
I was just hoping you may be able to shed some light on my problem for me!
Thanks

Sorry to jump on a fairly of thread, but....
Hi Barking Mad,
Did you ever get to the bottom of your particular charging issue? I've bought a TN7from ebay, and I'm having ng exactly the same problems as you described. make sure you use a hi capacity charger 1A plus most phone chargers are too low and will only trickle charge when the unit is off, also my four came from ebay with no power faults and I patched a QI charger inside the casing as the usb ports had failed.
I'd do that to any tn7 now as the port is just too fragile and might be needed for an emergency recovery.
