I had to restore a backup because my G1 was stuck on the G1 screen. I've done restore before and it all worked fine. This time, I got an error...
1. First, I am running CM5.0.8 with 1.0.7 recovery.
2. Went into recovery and tried nand restore and got the following error telling me to running recovery via console using 'nandroid-mobile.sh restore'
3. Went into console and ran it and got the following error:
error: unable to mount /data, aborting
I've tried to use a copy of my backup files that I had on my computer by moving it to the sd card and still get the same errors.
I'm a complete noob and seem to have messed things up trying to learn more!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
It sounds like you might be having a problem with the SD card, take it out and see if the phone boots up. SD cards die all the time and give you various symptoms. If that doesn't work, put 5.0.8 on the card and re-flash it. Sometimes my nandroid restore gives me a error if I have too many backups saved, I just have to mount SD card go to nandroid folder -> (device id) folder -> and there will be a folder for each back-up you have made, get rid of all but the last 2 and run it again. This always works for me.
Sounds more like something happened to the userdata partition.. otherwise the error would indicate /sdcard or a md5sum error. (Not sure what I've seen such things but they where entirely my fault.)
From fastboot screen try running 'fastboot erase system -w' from your computer, booting recovery and trying again.
Thank you for the replies.
I think I messed something up due to user error. I was playing with turning swap on and off via a script I had installed (a great script by a member steveo I think). I turned it on correctly by using swapon30 from the terminal but I didn't turn it off correctly (used swapoff instead of swap-off I think). When the blue led wouldnt turn off, I tried rebooting and got stuck on the G1 screen. (I really have no clue if that's where I messed up but that was what I was doing when it got stuck on reboot).
Anyway, I did a wipe/factory reset then it started up fine. I then went back into recovery and restored my last backup from last night which went fine as well. Only kind of weird thing I noticed was that I had to reinstall Google Maps from the market and now it's showing as installed in "system" whereas before it was showing as "internal".
When I did a factory reset and then ran a recovery, perhaps I needed to reflash the google apps that is part of the original CM5 install?
Appreciate the replies guys!

My scenario:
I updated my N1 to 2.1-update1 by applying an update.zip from the SD card. Everything worked fine for a while until a few days later I turned off my phone. On rebooting, it got stuck at the splash screen. I managed to reboot through the bootloader and got back in but have since had problems with a couple of apps force closing on startup and have been unable to send SMS. I decided that maybe I should start from scratch so rebooted into recovery mode again and wiped data and cache and reapplied the update. My phone will now not boot at all. It consistently gets stuck at the splash screen.
It's not bricked, as I can get to the bootloader and recovery menus but:
a) adb and fastboot won't recognize the phone as being connected
b) on the recovery menu I see "E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command"
c) when going in to the bootloader it complains about not finding PASSDIAG.ZIP
Anyone have any ideas what I can do? I can't connect via adb/fastboot so am not really sure what I can try...
Did you do a nandroid if so I would try to restore and start the update from that point.
I get an error when I go to my bootloader screen asking about passdiag.zip and passdiag.nbh but it hasn't ever caused any problems, it just complains about them. I don't get the issues with the recovery menu or USB though. Fairly sure that doesn't help you, just adding my experience in the off chance it helps someone diagnose.
I don't suppose anyone has any idea what passdiag is?
No one with any idea what passdiag is or what one might do to fix this issue?
Don't worry about passdiag.zip and passdiag.nbh. These files are the ROM dumps if i remember right from Google. Just let that pass. Is your phone unlocked running a RA recovery, or are you still at stock. If unlocked you will have to reflash whatever ROM it was you were using.
So here's how I got to having that error.
Originally I was using the stock ROM. No error.
Then I unlocked/rooted using the guide here. Error started appearing.
After that I flashed Amon-Ra's Recovery: Error still present.
Following that I flashed Cyanogen's Mod. Error still present.
I really would like to get rid of the error, even if it isn't hurting anything. I don't suppose there's a place I could get the files to push to my phone or somewhere in the phone I could tell it to stop looking for them?
Hi
I have no idea but there is something wrong with my phone.
About phone – HTC Hero, rooted, MCR 3.2, apps2SD working, 8GB sdcard, partitions – SWAP-0, ext3-512, rest fat32, recovery img - recovery-RA-hero-v1.5.2.img
I have nearly 80 apps installed, some Utilities, some system apps like uninstaller, Titanium etc and rest all games for kids.
Yesterday night phone battery was almost discharged so I put it on charge, forgot to remove it when fully charged, so removed it today morning when I woke up.
A friend called, though phone was on ringing mode it didn’t ring but just vibrated – surprised.
Just after that phone got lagging problem, whatever you do, there is a long delay, got irritated so switched off & back on the phone. It then went in the loop at start of the android screen where 2 pops up with sound, it just remained in the loop.
Couldnt get out of it, so removed the battery, tried again and it booted after long delay but it was as fresh as just installing the MCR 3.2, none of my installed applications were there. All my apps were missing.
So I thought to do Nandroid restore which I took couple of days ago with EXT data.
Booted in recover, wiped Ext-partition, Dalvic-cache, and the system data. Put it in USB mode, copied Radio ROM ver - 63.18.55.06JU_6.35.09.26 and Nandroid Restore files.
Then first I restored nandroid backup, booted the phone, out of surprise, few applications were missing which were there at the time of backup.
I installed radio rom and still the apps remained missing...
Again I went into recovering mode, wiped everything again, ext partition, dalvic-cache & system data, installed nandroid restore, booted the phone, and this time some different applications were missing which were there in previous try.
I assume nandroid should restore everything properly but then why the applications keeps missing everytime,
I have this problem since I tried Villain ROM just for trying it out.
What is the solution, I m just scared to reboot the phone if anytime required because it gives me a feeling that after reboot I will miss many applications.
This problem is very unusual, is phone gone bad or its OS or anything else???
Please help.
Thanks
u may need to format ur sd card and then do a nandroid restore. If not just redownload the apps your missing
I always format SDcard, then copy the nandroid backup to it but prob still exists.. and redownloading apps all the time is not going to work out because as soon as I reboot the phone, apps starts missing...
Did you remember to wipe ext partition? you didnt mention it
Yes m8 I did wipe everything, ext3 partition, even dalvic-cache & the system data as well before doing nandroid restore...
So recently I formatted my internal storage mainly to start fresh and clear out all the crapi didn't want, but since then whenever I reboot three phone gets stuck at the splash screen and will not function again until I pull the battery, reboot recovery, format data/media again, and flash something clean. When this happens and I reboot into recovery it prompts me to enter a password as if the data is encrypted. When I open the command line to see what it says it reads E: unable to decrypt storage... Or something to that effect. In on the most updated tarp and I've tried several Roms to see if there was something going wrong there but no. I would hardly consider myself a noob, and I have exhausted all other options with the exception of back to 100% stock and start from scratch unless anyone has any input... I can't even reboot without wiping my internal storage, please help!

i had this problem as well, and only thing i found to fix it was to completly odin back to stock, since then ive had no problems.
That's what I figured I might have to do.
Much appreciated
Yes this post is correctly dated. I've had this device a LOOOONNNGGG time.
The device has been rooted since shortly after I bought it new years ago. I've had very few problems since... which is why it's never been replaced.
I believe I have the stock ROM, sorry it's been a while.
When I start the device it gets stuck at the splash screen with the sprint logo.
I can get the device to "download mode" but I don't know what to do once there and I'm not sure I can do anything from here.
I can get the device to "android system recovery."
I know I installed TWRP when I rooted and installed the rooted ROM but when I boot to recovery it doesn't go there.
I've wiped the "cache partition" but the problem remained. I'm not sure what else to do from here and still be able to salvage data.
I'm trying to salvage the data on the internal storage. I'm pretty sure I could successfully "wipe data/ factory reset" and get it to "function" again but that's not the priority. I'm going to replace it regardless of success or failure. Data recovery is the priority here. (pictures and videos of my young children as well as less important stuff like contacts.)
I have an old laptop with an old version of ubuntu I can use or a newer one with windows 7 to work with. I mention this in case it makes this easier to help?
Thank you very much if you try to take a stab at this or refer someone that might!
Update:
So I managed to install TWRP via Odin.
I booted to this recovery and my data partition appears to be empty?
When I try to back up I get the error message "unable to mount '/data'"
I tried doing a wipe, not one of the fancy extra options ones just the regular wipe and it failed.
Any guidance will be extremely appreciated.
Edit:
So I've come to the conclusion that the data isn't accessible because of encryption and my pass code. Is there any way to enter it via recovery and access this info?
Is anybody out there?
Edit 2:
I hope this helps someone someday. I haven't solved the problem but I think I'm making progress.
First I had an old version of TWRP. I installed the latest for my device and tried backing up again. I'm not sure but I think it's working. TWRP dosen't seem to need my password for the backup. I imagine I'll just need it to access the data later.
Edit 3:
No sooner did I save the last edit and my backup failed.
Process ended with error : 255
I was just in twrp when i went into a random mount setting and i couldnt exit and i wasnt able to exit so i unmounted it and went to restore incase anything went wrong but then i realised EVERYTHING was gone, system was empty, everything, it still is able to boot to recovery and bootloader but thats it.
Ive tried odin but i couldnt get a zip
Ive tried adb sideload but it never worked and did nothing
What do i do? this is my main phone
Update: Im assuming twrp is glitching out, the OS does exist, im seeing if its gonna boot and work normally or not
Bruh, its working properly but its factory resetted, can someone please what i did, all i remember was mount then everythings gone. this confusion is the are
