Hi all,
I have searched Google and this forum but cannot find a solution to a problem that I thought would be a little more common.
I have created an application from a guide in a book I am reading but when I try to run the app in the AVD I receive the following error:

This is not much help so I looked into logcat and found the following error:

E/dalvikvm( 493): Unable to open stack trace file '/data/anr/traces.txt': Permission denied
I don't know if this is the cause of my problem or maybe a second problem. I am running the AVD on Linux and there is no /data directory in the root of the filesystem. I (relucantly) created the directories in questions and set the permissions to 777. However this has not resolved the problem.
Is anyone able to help me understand what these errors mean?

Hi all,
Love my HTC Desire so much i bought a Witstech A81E Android 2.2 Tablet. Which is pretty buggy to say the least though on the whole works well.
The one thing that is driving me crazy is a number of apps dont install with the logcat error:
"packagename.apk requires unavailable shared library com.google.android.maps"
Now from what i have read apparently this device does not come with Google Maps API so my question is how do i add it?
Can it be done? Do i need to modify a ROM to do it? can i push it via adb or apk?
A little help would be greatly appreciated.
It would need to have google apps installed to be able to access the libraries. Best bet is to find out if it has been rooted yet and try to install the proprietary applications they can't ship the device with.

the unit already has google maps 5.0 installed but apparently doesnt have the API's.
Any idea what im looking for? will it be an APK or just some files i need to put in a system folder?

additionally i have searched for any com.google.android.maps related data on my desire and have found the following:

If the application is installed correctly it should work because the api is stored in the data. Is the application on the tablet installed to the /system/ or /data/ partition. It might be looking for the data in /system/
not sure what you mean about where the application resides? you mean the app i am trying to install? The app i am trying to install is Tasker.
i have been doing some googling and saw someone else have the same problem and he managed to fix it:
When trying to install some apps, I would see this error message in logcat:
requires unavailable shared library com.google.android.maps
I had the Google Maps app installed and working, but that didn’t fix the issue. It turns out, I had to add two other files and restart the phone. I found those files in the google zip from Cyanogenmod. It took a little fiddling, but I was able to use these instructions to remount /system in write mode. First step was to take the following two files from the google apps zip (gapps-hdpi-20101114-signed.zip) and put them onto my sd card.
/system/etc/permissions/com.google.android.maps.xml
/system/framework/com.google.android.maps.jar
Then to load them onto the phone, I opened the terminal emulator and ran:
su
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cp /mnt/sdcard/com.google.android.maps.xml /system/etc/permissions/
cp /mnt/sdcard/com.google.android.maps.jar /system/framework/
Then after I rebooted the phone, I was able to install apps that depend on Google Maps. I can now check bus and train times, and do all kinds of other cool stuff with maps!

i simply used root explorer to copy it across though still not working. surely someone smarter than me can tell me what i am doing wrong.
is copying with root explorer essentially the same as above?

Well did you try using terminal emulator? And do what he did? B/c that looks like a remount to system to me easy as pie just do what he did you can find the files with root explorer or do it on your pc doesnt really matter. You can Not achieve what he did just using root explorer you need terminal emulator!

I don't know how much it will help (or if its 100 percent true) but I was just told recently that moving a file via root explorer is the same as pushing it via adb.

I did try to cook the original ROM though unyaffs couldnt extract the img.

I haven't thought about IDE integration. What do you have in mind exactly?
What I'm working on is automatically opening the result in a browser when processing done (already in the source code, although I tested only in osx at the moment).
Another functionality in progress (not uploaded yet) is to use ADB to automatically save a bugreport. So you would just execute

and it will save the bugreport, analyze it and open the result in a browser (as a bonus a screenshot is saved as well).
When this would be implemented I think it would be easy to add it as an external tool in eclipse and launch it from there.

One possible IDE integration would be for the report to have linkable parts to the source code when applicable.
Also selecting the process from a windows, having UI buttons starting and stopping the capture of profiling data would be a bonus.
Anyway, the application works very well, and thumbs up for open sourcing this tool .

Regarding the resource errors: did you used the precompiled binary or compiled the source code yourself? If it's the later one, how did you compile it? While developing I use eclipse, and I have the "res" folder added a source folder as well. This way the contents of the res folder will be copied to the jar. If you compiled it in some other way, then probably the resources from "res" where not packed into the jar. Building with the ant file should work as well ("ant -f chkbugreport.xml" if I remember correctly)
Regarding the IDE integration: yes, linking/binding the source code would be nice. For tracing data there is already something in progress: running "chkbugreport -t adb://" will show a window to select a process and start/stop it's profiling, but since that code uses code from the android sdk, I need to check how I can link the two codes together (since one of the codes is GPL, the other is Apache) before I can publish it.
I uploaded the changes for adb support. Now an extra jar file is needed: ddmlib.jar. You can find this either in the source code repo, or in the android sdk (a recent one is needed).
I updated the wrapper script as well, to use ddmlib.jar. However if the ddmlib.jar is missing, then the tool will still work like before, simply the new functionality will be missing, which is:

The above command will run the bugreport tool on the phone (if it's connected to the PC, of course), processes it and open the result in the browser. As extra bonus, a screenshot is saved as well ;-)

This will show a window, where you can select which process to trace. Click START then STOP, and the tracefile will be created and processed (and opened in the browser). BUT: there are some limitations:
* adb must be run as root (the tracefile is saved to the /data partition), which means either run en ENG build or USERDEBUG (but then you must first execute "adb root")
* it seems that the fileformat for traceview files have changed, the tool currently supports only version 1, so this will not work if you have a recent android version. I'll fix this later.

I compiled my own using IDEA, but since I didn't get any errors during compilation (I think) I didn't assume I was missing something in the compilation process.
About the other changes, why not output the traces to /sdcard ? Since that one is always R/W to all users should work right? I say this without actually having looked at the code behind the magic, so perhaps is not a valid suggestion.
I am planning to add support for that as well (i.e. the user can select where to save the tracelogs). AFAIK the sdcard is only readable for everyone by default, apps need to have a certain permission (something with WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE) in order to be able to write to sdcard. But if you are debugging your own app, that's not a problem.
I haven't updated this thread in a looong time. I'm pretty close to put up some more detailed documentation and examples, hopefully I can do it tomorrow.

The shell user does have permissions to write to sdcard, so if you're doing that via adb it should be good.

Hi, what are these colorful icons mean in the VM traces info?
Been trying to get this to work for hours, followed endless amounts of tutorials, I've hit a brick wall and am finally at the point I need to ask for more specific help.
I have 32gb Nexus 7 wifi only
Version: 4.2.1
Kernal: Motley's kernal 3.1.10-motley-v3+
Build Number:JOP40D
I started with CifsManager, couldn't get it to work because of no/wrong modules, tried many I found in tutorials around the net, eventually found I needed a new kernal, settled on Motley's, this finally allowed cifs to mount the folder, but the folder is always empty.
Came across Mount Manager, set it up, same problem.
Here's what my settings look like:
CifsManager:
Share Path: 192.168.1.18/y
Mount Point: /mnt/sdcard/cifs/pcY
Username: Comp1
Password: Password
Options: iocharset=utf8
I have tried it with options blank, same thing, yes my share is called y, Comp1 is the account I set up to access shares, no my password is not really password but you get the idea. I can access this share fine from other devices including my wii using the same settings.
Mount manager is basically the same except I made the mount point /compY because I didn't know if it would conflict, and it has file_mode and dir_mode = 0777.

I found out how chainfire solved this problem. (And did not said how ) I think my thread got lost ist the Android General section.... I should have posted it in the Nexus 7 General. (I tested it on my Nexus 7)

I am very new to this, I can't quite follow what I am supposed to do, I think start the file debuggerd as a system service? I can find the file, but I can't find out how to start it, I've done a few searches on this site and google but have come up empty, could you please explain exactly what I need to do to make this solution work?

The "debuggerd" is an "debugger daemon". It can be started with "start debuggerd" and stopped with "stop debuggerd". I think errors at excecution are posted in dmesg or logcat.
The main thought behind this, that the debuggerd is started by "start" with higher privileges even then our normal su. (Or it does mount something, I don't know) So, if you backup the original /system/bin/debuggerd and write your own commands into that file and start it via "start debuggerd" these commands are executed with these "high privileges". For example, if you write these content in debuggerd and start it, the share should be available for all apps. (Well, only if "others" have r (? wx ?) permissions on server...)

Well, you can't use this with the manager, because the manager needs to be changed to support this.

Here's a solution that can be implemented by ROMs or kernels to fix app mount support in Android 4.2 without requiring modifications to CifsManager or other apps.
I'd recommend asking your favorite ROM to incorporate the dalvik/init.rc patches.

What's happening is that the debuggerd process is spawned directly by init, which uses the default mount namespace, so any mount operations are shared with/visible to all other processes.
The problem is that when an app calls "su" to mount a file system, it's already walled off in a separate mount namespace by virtue of the app itself having been spawned from zygote. Basically, any process whose ancestry can be traced back to zygote can't mount file systems visible to other apps. Those whose process ancestry don't include zygote can. Which is why manually mounting file systems from adb (with either "su" or "adb root") also works.
After all this time nobody has updated any app to fix this problem?

Well, I'm a little bit sad that this unit doesn't have a unique CPU like the others. That was really the easiest differentiator. I guess we'll need more information about this one in comparison with the S150 to make it easy to differentiate between the two.
Do you actually have this unit? Because if you do, I'd like for you to run a few apps to verify specifications and make it easier to create a dedicate wiki page for it.

Please install Android System Info. Click on the "System" tab, click on the application (overflow) menu and export results to file. Go through it, its a simple html file in /mnt/sdcard directory and censor any information that want to hide like accounts names and SSID then upload it as an attachment.
Also, if you can install CPU / RAM / DEVICE Identifier and check the CPU discovered. If it is unspecific or seems misidentified the please sent the report back to Davy Bartoloni. He's very good at identifying the exact processor and can usually give you feedback within 48 hours. A screenshot would also be nice.

I installed a virtual button app.. and found the overflow menu.... however I cannot see the html file that it creates in that folder.... so I am at a loss. It says it saved the file but I am unable to find it. Thoughts?

Excellent. I was trying to figure out how you're supposed to be able to trigger it with an app. But, all the ones I found required root and I wasn't sure if you had this access yet.
Anyways, the default file location is the /mnt/sdcard/AndroidSystemInfo directory. The nomencalture of the file should be something like "asi-system-infos-{year#}-{mo#da#}-{pid#}.html"
As for the CPU / RAM / DEVICE Identifier, I noticed that it required detection to be improved. Can you please hit the evaluate button and once it is over there should be a "Send Info" button. This will use your email client to attach a report to the developer, Davy Bartoloni. He'll be able to determine the correct information specific to your unit with 48 hours.

I just rolled back to 2.3.4 to try use those apps because for some reason I couldn't see anywhere where the files were written. so couldn't upload the html file

I wish you would have been more vocal. I could have given you a command to use to find the file with a terminal app, like Terminal Emulator.

Can you maybe try it again but use the terminal emulator to find the file? Maybe show me the output of "ls -l -d /mnt/sdcard/AndroidSystemInfo/" and "ls -l /mnt/sdcard/AndroidSystemInfo/" commands? Btw, do you have root access on this device? Sometimes you cannot see the file because of the app's ID is different from the one that you are using to locate it.

finally a thread for the Cusptech Navigation devices, YAY
I own one that i purchased mid last year. Unfortunately I must say it is really buggy. I would love to get CN MOD on them instead of stock "garbage".
As I am a little bit techy, I already gathered some Infos about the Navi:
The devices are based on Mainboards created by cusptech and sntron (sntron.com). The Mainboard incorporates different Modules/Interfaces for Bluetooth, FM-Radio, DVB-T Television and DVD. The Modules are controlled through Android Apps (SNT-FM, SNT-BT and so on). There is a main hardware audioswitch on the Mainboard that switches the sound between the different Interfaces(from BT to FM to Android Media...). Unfortunately the Output levels are not all equal. For example in my case, the BT and FM-Radio is way louder than Android Media. I already tried to access the Volume Control through Tasker, sadly Tasker has only control of the Android Media Sound. The BT-Module is not as usually found on android devices, it is fully controlled by the SNT Software and is not accessible through android itself in the settings nor can one send files through it for example. The sound quality of the BT-Interface is not really good and the Software itself is buggy and often crashes. I don't use it anymore.
I will install Android System Info and if i can find the files I put them here. Btw. I am using 2.3.4 because android 4 is still in early beta. As I know the device is rooted, at least that's what Root-Checker tells me. Although sometimes, some apps are complaining about missing root rights, like Tasker. I don't know why.

Well, if you can install a terminal app; like Terminal Emulator, then type "su" and the command prompt changes from "$" to "#" then you have root.
As for your other programs telling you that it cannot access root, that is usually with a problem with mismatched_uid symlinks in the app's /data/data/{package.name}/* directories. The symptom is often caused by an incomplete update where package manager saw a uid mismatch in the settings and file system. So, you may see symlink references like the following.

The above is showing that PM has found a user id mismatch from the settings "10037" with the apps user files "1000". However, since the /mismatched_uid/settings_10037/fs_1000 directory path doesn't actually exist the app isn't able to use its files. If you have busybox AND a terminal app installed. You can run the following command to see if this is the case with any of the currently installed apps.

The above command uses find to search through all the apps symlinks and uses long listing to show you their links. Grep is used to filter out for the word "mismatch" to make the list smaller. If the command shows nothing at all then try removing the " | grep mismatch" to get the full output. The fix is pretty easy. Uninstall the program make sure its directory in /data/data/{package.name} is gone then reinstall.

Today my Tasker crashed after using Google Maps. Unfortunately Maps is not quit stable on the device. Seems that Android is trying to close Tasker and ban it from the status bar. Even with correct Configuration in Tasker. Must check this because I created a Profile which controls the Backlight of the unit based on Sunset/Sunrise and location. Anyway.
Attached is the file that I found in /sdcard/AndroidSystemInfo/ . Just black labled the IMEI and MAC.

Excellent. But, you might have to post it on a file sharing host; like Dropbox, Skydrive or Google Drive. I think you need to have at least 10 posts before you can post attachments and linkable URLs. You can get around the URL parser by just surrounding the URL with underscores; like _https://www.dropbox.com/s/8suzxlgcdv640n8/old.google.maps.apk_ which will allow you to post an non-clickable link that can be copy & pasted into the URL bar of a browser.
(or you can copy and paste the context of the file into a post)
