Mario Live Wallpaper - Desire Themes and Apps

Don't know if other people check the other forums around here but a dev called pikipirs have developed a LW based on Mario. Quite brilliant to be honest.
Check out the thread. [Click!]

I love this wallpaper, turned it down to 10fps tho to save some battery life.

If you check the statistics dialling *#*#4636#*#* , live wallpapers typically account for less than 1% of CPU based battery usage for me, so I wouldn't bother reducing the fps in any futile effort to save battery

Live wallpaper for everyday use

I have no prior experience with live wallpapers before getting my Vibrant. Do any nexus one users or other 2.1 early adopters have experience with battery life and using a live wallpaper for everyday use?
My battery info shows that the live wallpaper only uses about 2% of the battery but my screen takes up like 40%, isn't there some sort of connection?
What is your question?
-bZj
I'm using the "Ocean Waves" live wallpaper and haven't had any problems with short battery life or low system resources because of it. It's fun to play with and great for showing off to people and has made one iPhone 4 user actually hang his head in shame after talking about how great it was that he can have a background on his phone now.
I use nexus works fine battery life is good

I don't know exactly how you find that info buy under battery usage, "magic smoke" set to red and it says my display has only used 9% of the battery... but I think that's not even close to the values you are giving...
EDIT: Yeah, that's the wrong stats... where do you get that info?
I have had good battery life with this thing so far (as much as I play with it), but that is only in comparison of a g1 I got just after they first came out that has been hacked to hell and back...
i like the ocean waves one...
Thanks for the feedback guys. I plan on keeping my live wallpaper. After using them, its hard to go back to static wallpapers.
If you want maximum battery saving from your wallpaper... true black doesnt use any battery. Google true black in your phone browser, save, set as wallpaper. I havent had any problems with battery from live wallpapers though..

what about new ones? or only stock ones available ? New live ones would be cool that use less power etc.

[Q] Cost in battery life to use live wallpaper?

Has anyone done a quantitative comparison of how much a live wallpaper, such as the standard "Water" or "Ocean Waves," eats up in battery life compared to a simple, static wallpaper?
Well for me it's really sucking my battery when using live wallpapers so after that i hadn't tried using it again. I'm using a wallpaper which is completely black just for the sake of the phone's battery even if it's boring. lol
I'm using anipet aquarium and I don't think the hit is too bad. Maybe instead of 40% at the end of the day, I'm at 30%.
I didn't want to start a new thread or hijack yours, but I cannot find the "grass" or "water" Lwp 's anywhere, not in a rom or apk. So if anyone has those apks please post them.

That's about my experience as well. If you can easily make it through a day without LWP, you'll make it through the day with it.

Better battery life!

Hey guys & gals just wanted 2 share something with u. I recently decided 2 uninstall cetcpu from my phone & decided 2 go with cpu tuner instead. In doing so i've noticed my battery life improve significantly with some profile tweaking of course. If you've run the virtuous htc sence rom with the pershoot o.c kernal u know how disgusting the battery life can b.It literally sucks the juice out of your battery like "Debbie" from Debbie does Dallas sucks the juice out of...well u know. Anyway,i also noticed how little juice the system resources now use up. I included a screenshot of the battery status screen.Hope this helps anyone with battery issues especially if your running the rom & kernal mentioned above, it worked 4 maybe it can work 4 u. P.S I have the screen set to 20% brightness, gps, wifi, blutooth, autosync all disabled.Only reason i mention this is because even with all these things disabled along with a few other,b4 installing cpu tuner my battery would still drain like crazy. Thx.
That's some horrible grammar.

Liek ma grammarz?
Anyway, Your saying the cpu tuner helps the battery life? I'll give this a go but I don't use any of the sense roms. I'm all for better battery life although I do get 15h on pershoots kernel running cm 6.1 stable.

i have almost the exact same info on mine with setcpu oc to 1ghz on CM6.1 and i get atleast a full day of use with frequent music and texts. alot better then any other android phone.
I don't know how you guys are having such bad battery life. Currently at the moment I am at 22h 11m 51s since unplugged with 57% left. This is all with CM6.1 RC4 w/ wifi + wifi calling on all the time when I am home, autosync on for everything, auto brightness, and some use of gps. I listen to music on my phone for atleast 3+ hours walking to and from class + texting, browsing, facebook, twitter, fantasy league during class and the occasional call, pretty good usage. with setcpu on oc to 1ghz with some profiles set up.
what if im not running sense?
If it works with sense I would think it'd work with most everything else.

Is the phone not quick enough at 1Ghz? I keep mines on stock speeds, have setcpu installed but don't use, and have CyanogensMod on it. I get the whole days worth plus more of battery. I can't even kill it when I want to recalibrate it.
A whole day for me is about 16-20 hours for me without charging. This is MADNESS!

Not that the phone is not fast enough. It's placebo effect where people "feel" that it needs to be faster when they overclock it at crazy speed. The G2 has already proved itself a speed monster, none of the android phones out there can top it right now. As for the battery life, I honestly don't notice any considerable improvement.

So what settings exactly are you using on the cpu tuner? Just wanted to know so I can replicate it.
My settings.
@quierotacobell...Under "Current" i have governor set to:conservative,Max:1094Ghz,Min:768Mhz.
"Profiles":
Performancendemand-Max:1097Ghz,Min:768Mhz
Good:conservative-Max:1094Ghz,Min:768Mhz
Normal:conservative-Max:1094Ghz,Min:768Mhz
Power save:conservative-Max:1094Ghz,Min:768Mhz(services set to 2g)
Screen off:conservative-Max:768Mhz,Min:768Mhz
Extreme Power save:conservative-Max:768Mhz,Min:768Mhz(services set to 2g)
Keep in mind i have wifi, blutooth, & sync disabled all across the board. Also i'm simply stating what worked for me it's no guarantee it's going to work for you.
Hmm how can you get better battery life with CPU Tuner because the lowest you can go to minimum is 768?
Will try that out Utorrent, thanks.

I have great battery life on CM7. There are a number of things that affect your battery life that all need to be taken into consideration.
ROM
- Find something by a reputable team like CyanogenMod and Team Royal. Their ROMs don't have HTC's SenseUI overlay and aren't bogegd down by the extra framework and overhead needed for Sense.
Kernel and CPU Clocking
- If the ROM supports changing the CPU clock speed, you can have your device run at lower clock speeds when idle (such as when the screen turns off), theoretically saving battery during those times. There are some great kernels by faux123 in the Development section.
- You can also try an undervolted kernel. Performance is no different than a stock voltage version of the same kernel, it just uses less battery to do the same functions.
The Screen
- This eats up battery like a beast. I don't use automatic brightness as most of the time a low setting is good enough (i.e. indoors).
- Gaming and other graphic-intensive activities will chew up battery
- I also use relatively dark-colored backgrounds because I think (can't prove) that it's requires less effort for the screen to show darker colors. Somewhere I read that it's easier to read light text on dark than dark text on light, so there's that too.
Connections
- GPS takes lots of power to use, so keep it off until you need it.
- Wi-Fi and bluetooth will continuously scan for connections while they are on, so leave those off while you aren't using them.
- In areas with poor network signal strength, your phone uses more energy than in areas with great signal strength.
Apps
- Be selective about which apps you install and run, especially ones designed to run all the time. I like to have something that can monitor CPU usage so that I can see when something is hogging system resources. Kind of like the Task Manager in Windows.
TasKillers - DON'T USE THEM!!!
- TasKillers cause more problems than they solve. Android is better at closing idle/unnecessary tasks than any TasKiller app.
- Killing tasks with TasKillers also adversely affects the stability of your device.
- Many of the things killed by TasKillers end up restarting anyway because they're needed for something, so you're repeatedly killing and starting the same apps over and over again. Guess how much battery that saves (hint: less than zero).
- If anything, use AutoKiller Memory Optimizer. This doesn't kill apps, it changes settings in Android that determine when to start closing apps to free memory.
Thanks you very much!!1
The biggest deal that has to do with battery life is how hard you push the phone. It has nothing to do with ROM or kernels...
If you truely wanted to test a ROM to see how the the battery life stack against each other you'd have to have x amount of devices with the SAME EXACT settings within the given ROM. Each phone running a different ROM. I ran a Sense ROM over the weekend and got HORRIBLE battery life. but other claim Cyanogen is the pits.

its good practice to save battery to turn refresh interval for apps that access the web for updates such as social media, new readers, etc to manual to help save battery life as most of these apps refresh on a pretty regular interval and defiantly eat up alot of battery
If you notice especially high battery drain and recently used your GPS or Camera they can occasionally stay on with no visible signs. Also please remember the battery stats is HIGHLY inaccurate. A Phone reboot usually fixes this.
Never keep apps like Skype, IRC, etc that stay running and keep your CPU on they drain battery especially fast!
One big battery saver is to not wake your phone to just check the time. Let the CPU stay in deep-sleep as long as possible to preserve power until you actually need your phone for something.
One MAJOR thing to save power is DO NOT MESS WITH CPU SETTINGS!
Do not use 3rd party apps like Voltage Control or SetCPU or even the built in Performance settings as modifying the settings will increase the minimum clock to 200MHz which will greatly reduce battery life than NOT messing with them. This is a known issue and will be addressed in a future release!

If you DO decide to run a custom kernel, (NOT, I repeat NOT recommended or supported by CM9 devs) I'd suggest Control Freak. I ended up with a 200mhz min, and with that app managed to get deep sleep and 100mhz back. WITH uv and some minor oc. My battery life is great.
Head on over to the app thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1072403
Another thing that can save battery, Screen Filter from the Market (Play Store now I guess) can dim our screens lower than the lowest stock increment. Useful for dark environments. (Movies, night outside etc.)
This should be obvious, and has been stated already, but it bears repeating: TURN OFF DATA AND ALL OTHER MODEMS if you're not using them.
Thanks to all the devs and everyone who contributes.
YES!!! It seems a little bit more snappy or is it just me?
And thanks for the advice not to run custom kernels...
Without a doubt, the biggest battery saver for me, is to turn off data until I want to use it.
I simply cannot believe the difference. Makes me think I'm gonna have to go out and get Juice Defender, and let it turn off data when I put the phone to sleep, it is just that dramatic.
I can call text, and play hours of games, and still have the battery have more juice remaining than it did over the same timeframe with just a call or two for usage with the data on.

Rather than installing an additional app to control brightness, why not just tweak the settings yourself?
System Settings / Display / Automatic Backlight
Check "Use custom" and set a lower Screen dim level. Use "Edit other levels..." to adjust the steps for auto brightness if you use that feature.
This is a fantastic feature if you use the phone in low light conditions.

This first and foremost for me.
I took my phone to a basketball game the other night and turned data off. From when I left work to when I got home was about 7 hours, and I didn't plug in for another few hours later and still had some juice. Compare this to last night when I went to class and had my phone in my pocket with 4g on for a few hours, I arrived home and my phone died 15 minutes later. Total time elapsed, 3 hours 46 minutes.
Particularly 4G data is offensive in it's battery consumption.
I have also found that putting the display on Auto Brightness saps my battery. I just adjust it whenever I need to, keeping it on the lowest setting most of the day since I'm inside a lot.
The mmc_delayed_work and deleted_wake_locks are driving me crazy. I know they've been reported as "false blames," but something, whether MMC or otherwise, definitely causes seemingly unnecessary wake locks, and there is a very clear pattern between high report percentage and battery drain.
I don't mean to take away from the optimizations suggested; they're definitely useful if you're looking to stretch the battery life out longer than typical stock capability. But for many of us, something wakes the phone a little too often, and it's very difficult to debug without disabling every single application and testing one at a time.
I guess the point is, has anyone else found a better way to figure out these wake locks?
Why is awake time in Android OS always more than double the display on time? That sounds like serious wake locks. What can I do to reduce that?

Don't overlook the AudioOut_1 wakelock. Its my number one offender at the moment.
Minimize it by turning off screen selection sounds... System Settings / Sound / Touch sounds.
We need to figure out what the problem is with that.
On the good side, my mmc and deleted wake locks are negligible so far on beta.

Just spend a day with CM9 Beta 0. It's a great rom with lots of promise. Great feel and look, very fast, ICS is fantastic.
That said, the battery life is not there yet. I basically set it up the same way I set up the stock rom. Email on Exchange push notification, EVERYTHING ELSE on manual sync. On a stock rom I usually am at about 40% after 12 hours of moderate use. About 5% drop an hour. On this rom I was at 75% after 2 hours. About 12% an hour. This is with the "stock" 1800 mAh battery.
If the devs can match the battery life of stock GB I'll be back. It really is a great rom, I just can't recharge twice a day, and I'm not carrying around a 3500mAh battery in my pocket either.
Seriously, great work to all the devs who have taken it this far. Looking forward to the next couple releases.

I use JD for this and run it in extreme mode, which disables data until you physically enable it yourself (and after you enable it, it will disable again when the screen is off). Using it, I get a huge improvement in battery life, especially on CM9. It's kind of annoying having to enable it everytime you turn the screen back on, especially since it takes 4-5 seconds before data works again, but if it can give me the type of battery life it does, I am all for it. Other than the slightly noticeable lag I get compared to CM7 and other ROMs such as CleanGB (I know I can install supercharger, but I am talking pure stock CM9 here), I have no problems at all. Major props to all the developers involved for breathing new life into our OG Epics.
