I have the Hero and like everyone else here am drooling over the Evo. Can't upgrade till October though, but it didn't hurt to ask for a little exception from the CEO himself.
Here's a link to my story of trying to upgrade early:

EDIT: Bottom line, if you're not eligible for upgrade, you're not getting an upgrade price. No exceptions. But, they're willing to buy your phone back for about $80 if it's a Hero.

Or you could sell it on eBay for $200 buy-it-now and purchase the Evo retail ($450-200 = $250)
Not much more than a new contract price!

... interesting...
I hadn't even thought of that. Although I seriously doubt anyone would pay $200 for a used hero but if so mine is still pristine.
Thanks for the suggestion.
I'm not up for an upgrade till February so for the time being i love my hero and have no complaints except one. Why if ur making a phone would u put only a few hundred mb internal memory on it. I mean i can buy a flash drive for 5 or 10 bucks and it be 4 to 8 gigs. Kinda retarded if u ask me. That and keyboard lag.
Back on subject...if I really wanted to go to evo I'm sure I could call sprint and convince them. I've been with them for 13 years and it's always worked in the past if u threaten to go to metro pcs. I'm sure my account has some interesting notes in it cause I always get my way. Ill debate them until they get tired of me. Morons lmao

Your lucky if you get $100 for the hero now. Im not due for an upgrade until november and im sure by then there will be a better phone out than the evo. It's an endless cycle.

I've read various users on here selling their's for $200 BIN, although this was probably a little less than a month ago. With the ever-looming release of the Evo, this may have gone down..Although I wouldn't assume you would get any less than $150, especially since Best Buy is offering $211 (Last I checked) store credit for it.
Personally, I love my Hero. Running Fresh Toast, I benchmark only 1 mflop less than an N1 with 2.1...Perfectly acceptable to me. I'll pass on the Evo and see what comes after

I had a similiar issue about moving the upgrade date up, but I was only asking for a month. It took 3 calls and me talking to a supervisor to get them to give me the early upgrade. I think it helped that I was only 5 months away from being with them for 10 years. Either way, it was a real big hassle and we almost told them to stick it......But I held me ground and we did get the ealry upgrade. Ended up betting 2 heros for $99

Yes!! Dual-Core 1.5GHz Snapdragon phones!!! I may just hold out for these. Supposedly the first ones are due out by the end of this year. Contract upgrade time baby!
So sad that I am second guessing the EVO now. I love Top Of The Line stuff, but sadly with cell phones they get snuffed out quickly.
I think my problem is too many addicitions to spread my money around on. I need to get off the Coke and Meth....i've said too much.
Yes, from what I have been told they cannot give early upgrades but they can do other things. If anything, call them and tell them that if you can’t get an EVO you will terminate your contract and pay the fee. They’ll try to keep you with other options. I did this when the Hero came out and they gave me $20/mo off our plan for the next 24 months. Not too shabby. I don’t even feel bad because Sprint will rape you if you let them.
As far as the EVO, I’m waiting until Xmas to see what HTC releases. I would hate to get the EVO, only to find out that HTC rushed it so it could be the first 4G phone and releases one way better in December or the first quarter of 2011.

Man, I have gotten what I want out of Sprint every time I've tried (but I don't think I've ever asked for something unreasonable ) EXCEPT the time I tried to get my upgrade ONE DAY EARLY. Best Buy was doing a crazy sale and I spent 40 minutes outside outside the store on the phone with Sprint to no avail. Luckily the manager at BB was willing to honor the sale the following day and I ended up getting an unheard of deal on 2 hero's and a blackberry curve
i called in right before they released 2.1 and told them i was canceling becasue of the problems with 1.5(lmao) if they didnt reset my upgrade date and they did on the spot no problem

Simple as that? Wish i could talk to the people you did.
I got a a Touch Pro 2 in November of 2009 and I hate the friggin thing. It's slow as hell and no way compares the to X. I called Verizon and they said I was not able to upgrade until August 2011. I simply can't have that. So does anyone have any advice as to what I can do to get this amazing phone within the next couple weeks. I am almost desperate enough to sign up for another plan just to get this phone.
Hell if your going to sign up for another plan you mas as well just pay full retail for the phone because its going to eat you up with early termination fees. Or you can always hit up ebay you might find a new never opened clean esn phone
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
You may be able to buy a cheap dumbphone on craigslist (verizon branded) and have that activate don your main line (change ESN) then you can call customer service and tell them you no longer need the unlimited data for your current plan (so they drop the $30 a month) So then you're basically just paying for your minutes and any extra features you may have such as texting etc.
THEN, go to a verizon store or Best Buy and add a line to your account with the droid X, this will run you $9.99 + $30 a month on top of what you were paying for just minutes and text.
In essence if you get the data package canceled on the first line, then added on a second line, you will only be paying $10 more a month plus the price of the droid x, which can be offset by selling your touch pro 2
I agree with everyone here, but don't worry about getting a dumb phone to replace your tp2. When I got my incredible I went in the store ready to pay full retail, they said just open a new line and we can place a fake esn on your line. Just depends on where you go. And I'm glad I didn't pay full retail, cuz I wouldn't have been able to get it replaced with a droid x.
I actually still have my old Chocolate and an old LG phone that I can't remember the name of, so should I just use those? And will VZW just let me cancel the $30 data plan?

I AM IN THE EXACT SAME BOAT AS YOU, Explodee. I bought the TP2 the day it came out for Verizon; before I had actually seen one. It was so hyped up that I thought it would be the best phone to EVER grace Vzw. Well turns out its a complete and total DUD. WinMo is by far the worst OS and I have only found about 3 apps that are worthwhile, while android has TONS of apps.
But, I know how you can get the X for the 2 year price. Just add a line. I added my family onto my account and they all got brand new BB's for the 2 year price, while my phone number didn't get any upgrade. I would just put a dummy phone on your current line, take off the data package, then open up a new line on your account with the Droid X, and switch to a family share plan.
I just switched my entire family over to my plan from Sprint, so I told the Vzw people I wanted an early upgrade if they were going to get 4 extra phone lines from their competitor. They agreed, thank god! I couldn't go another year with this TP2.
Good luck!
I should have mentioned this earlier. I am already on a family plan with my mom, bro and sis. None of them are eligible for upgrades for about a year as well. I also wanted my number to be on the X and if I had to sign up for a new account I would want to get the X for the new one, then immediately switch the service between the phones. Is that possible?
Also, would I be able to sign up for the X and cancel the data package and put the dummy phone on the X account?
Look lol I've screwed Verizon over every way possible lol, I've had EVERY Droid branded phone they made (yes even the eris ewww) and have never paid over the two year price for them and have kept the same line everytime. It just depends on how much the rep you talk to wants your business. I go to the same guy everytime, so I get a really good deal everytime. Your best bet is to make friends with someone at your local corporate store and go from there, or just add a line with the x, switch a dummy esn to that line and cancel the data package. Then switch the x to your original line, and your done. You don't even have to take the data plan off your line that way. Hope this has been helpful.

I have to chuckle every time someone posts that they have screwed a cell company.
Really? Keep reminding yourself that every month when you pay the bill.
I've been on VZW for a long time, have numerous lines with them, and have convinced them to give me early upgrades on several occasions. Not once did I think I had screwed them. At 'BEST' I felt like I got a little recognition for being a long time customer. I'm pretty sure they are still very profitable on our business.

Zaphod, you have a point. Cell phone companies make all their profit in their monthly bills, not in selling cell phones. If they did, you could get a new phone every day if you wanted.
My buddy works at walmart in the electronics department, and I had mentioned the Droid x to him. He said that a guy came in and bought a X for full retail price, 500 something dollars from him. On the register he can look up and see what how much Walmart made off of the transaction (percentage value and only for certain electronics like computers, tvs and carrier based cell phones). He told me that even at full retail, Walmart still lost money.
Vzw screws you over every month, we just help take the edge off the price by giving them 200 bucks towards a droid x
With all these crazy new phones being announced with their super screens and dual core processors, it got me thinking.. Sprint premier customers can upgrade every year. Assuming we got it on day one (me me), do you think we could sell it in craigslist or ebay around late june or early july and make $200? My phone has a spot where anything on a white screen shows up kinda spot burned and the camera lens cover falls off. I'm gonna save these to get a replacement and then sell it. How well would it retain its value in another 6 months? If phones can stay above the 200 mark for a year, then can't we upgrade indefinitely for virtually free (activation fees size)

Lol 300+ would be intense but I'd be super happy with 200. I'm sure we could at LEAST get 150 cause that's about how much hero is going for a year and 3 months after launch. Can't wait for those new dual core phones, lets hope sprint grabs one!

Edit: Although I do love me some HTC. I'm personally hoping for a CDMA variant of the Playstation Phone or some other Android smartphone with a gamepad!
Wouldnt suprise me if you got $300 - $350. I sold a hero with accessories for $250.00 on ebay about 3 months ago.
Sorry to derail... I was laughing at the "A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on the IPhone. We now have the Htc Evo." sig, not the price. I agree with the price.
It's not unheard of to get more than you paid for it, because you're selling it with no contract obligations. The comparable "new" price is $450, not $200. That said, a lot of people won't recognize that unless you spell it out for them and think you're ripping them off. But there is unquestionably value in a phone that does not require a contract extension or use of upgrade eligibility.
After a year though, with newer, better phones out, it'll lose some value. But even if you don't "break even," you have to consider the value of having the phone for the year you used it, as well as the value of having the latest and greatest new one. Whatever it's worth on the market at the time you decide to upgrade, I look at it as a bonus.
As much as I'd love to do the same, I don't think I could ever get rid of my EVO

No way, nice! That thing is ancient I made a long post earlier but I guess it didn't go through, I was saying I'll sell my evo a few weeks before the next big sprint phone comes out, or when we know something is coming but it's only leaks and it's not announced to the public yet, that way the evo is still one if the more in demand phones retaining it's value. All about timing, even if it's not before july!

This is my plan as well. Right now you can get like 300. I am expecting 150-200 by summer as others have mentioned. I'd be very happy with that.
Gotta love Sprint. If you're a phone lover and want fast upgrades, it can't be beat. Just wish they had more super phones to choose from instead of just 1 or 2.
On a side note, I can still sell my old HTC Touch for over $50 on eBay, but I kinda like it for nostalgia.

It's going to be a long time before the evo drops in price, at work we have a pretty excellent contract with Sprint and the evo is the only device we don't get a discount on. We can get -literary - any other device for free... but not the evo. I had to beg to get one...
Just fwiw. I wouldn't mind a drop in price though, my wife's 12 months are almost up and she's sick of her moment

Through a fun glitch with Best Buy and my upgrade I got my Evo for $50. The phone was $200 and I sold my Moment to a coworker who was not eligible for an upgrade for $150.
They were selling for 200+ on ebay at the time, and she offered $200 but she just had a baby and I'm a nice guy.
Just got done doing planogram in my store and it looks like the EVO 4g phone has been bumped down to $99.
Nice! Never thought about the fact that my phone would one day become almost entry level
LOL

I feel like i been robbed. i left metro a couple months ago and paid 200 for mine also. Should have been just a bit more patient but my wife had the shift.. Maybe i was a lil jealous... lol
Is the perfect gift to my brother birthday.
Ok, so I have a question....
I added my wife's best friend to our plan about 2.5 weeks ago and she got the Nexus S. She hates it (reception issues). She is going to return it and get the Evo 4g (my wife has this phone, and so she knows it works and likes it). I was wondering if anyone had any idea how to return it to the sprint store, then go get the evo from best buy (LOL). This way, she gets 200 dollars back and has to pay 0.
The only way I can think of is to cancel the line altogether, then open a new line at BB, but she just started giving that new number to everyone and I don't think she wants to go through it again.
So if I have an upgrade I can go get a free evo? My brother has been wanting me to flash my evo to cricket and sell it to him and get another Evo. I won't be getting the 3d anytime because I have a tablet now and the EVO does enough for me. Don't see the point in having a really nice 7 inch tablet and really nice evo3d.
Nice to know!
MM
the evo is also free at http://wireless.amazon.com with new account. i bought it night before last and should be here any minute
I got mine free last week at best buy, with a 1 year upgrade, since they took away my Premier Gold status.
Nice, I'll go buy another one right now since it's so cheap , oh but I'm only half way through my 2-year, so I'll buy another one next year when it's $50!
I am trying to talk my girlfriend into getting an Evo, but she is Crackberry faithful, and thinks the Evo is too big to fit in her pocket at work. She is the last hold out in a house full of Androids.
I just scored one for my wife for $75 from Sprint Corporate. I have no idea how it arrived at that price so don't ask! ;-)
I just bought an Evo 3G yesterday for $150 at a Sprint store. Can I get a $50 credit from them or do I have to completely return it and buy another one?
Well that was easy. Called the store and they put a $50 credit on my account, took about 3 minutes.
Of course lol
Gotta be a sign that something better is coming out. If they're dropping prices this much for an EVO trying to rid quantity, a new phone upgraded EVO must be around corner. And no the 3d isn't it.

Seriously just found it today (after reading an article that says its $50 on there), I gave it a shot and if you do a new VZW contract or do it as an upgrade the phone is $0.01 . Of course I STILL can't get it because my upgrade isn't for another month and no matter how much I ask VZW to do it early they won't (my Motorola Droid's keyboard is literally falling off as the glue holding the keys on melts from the heat of the processor, I tried gluing back on with no luck it melted away).
I'm sure this deal will still be around then but I'm getting antsy, and picking my keys up off the ground is annoying.

On a side note, the earliest that VZW will let you upgrade early is 1 week before your upgrade date.
Try and ask them that if they can hold the offer price for you when you upgrade in a month.
My carrier had an offer that saved 380~ dollars plus the savings from contracts, and it only lasted a week. Good thing my brother and I got ourselves brand new phones each
My courier let's you upgrade 4months in advance if you threaten to cancel the contract and resign with another company. Maybe that's what you should do.

Spoke to them today and they are giving me an early upgrade (good news) but I need to do it at the VZW store (bad news). VZW currently has it for $99 which is still a good deal (and I will probably get a $30 credit bringing it to $69) but to get it for a penny would be better. I'm going to call Amazon in the AM to see if they can see it on my account and do it for me, otherwise I'll head to the store and see what I can do. Considering how annoying the keypad screwing up on my droid is I may just eat the cost to have it a month earlier than planned.
Just to give an epilogue to this story, Amazon would not do the early upgrade (I don't blame them, it wasn't their authorization). Went to the VZW store, paid $150 with a $50 mail in rebate, no new every 2 credit (would have had to wait till Sept) so I lost $30 there, then sold my OG Droid to a recycler for $61 so my net cost is $39.
If I had waited I would have gotten the phone for a penny and made back the phone recycle cost (however I noticed those fluctuate a lot so who knows if I would have gotten $61 in a month, It was $80 2 months ago!). So really my net cost could be more, but my old phone was pissing me off to no end, so the price and the fact I'm having a blast with this phone already made it worth it.
PS I almost walked away from the deal because of the difference in price but realized in a month I don't even know if this phone will be available. They literally had 1 in the store, covered in dust and the Verizon guy said hes never even had anyone ask about the phone let alone buy it.
I bought my XP from Amazonwireless for $50, renewed my 2 year contract several months ahead of time
Amazon wouldn't let me do the purchase until I called VZW and told them I wanted a new phone and would get it through Amazon. My contact/every 2 wasn't over until 10/15/2011 or so. I called VZW, they lifted the resitriction and I purchased the phone from Amazon for $50. All I told Verizon was that I was going to get a new phone and renew my contract, I guess it helps that I'm a 10+ year customer.
Then I sold my OG Droid with GPA15 on ebay for $120.

true, a deal is a deal
They did this for me when I purchased my Droid from Amazon a few years ago also. I'm not aggressive or anything when I call, I just bring up a few facts (never late, long time, renewing) and they cut me some slack.

Ok cool well at least now I know for next time I will definitely try this approach, I don't recall that i specifically mentioned that I wanted to buy through Amazon.
