Considering trading in my Nexus One with T-Mobile for an EVO with Sprint mainly becuase I'm sick of always being on edge with T-Mobile but I will be highly dissapointed if I face the same situation with Sprint. Anyone have experience with Sprint in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area? Is 3g coverage pretty consistent or will I contantly be forced down to 2g like I currently am with T-Mobile?
Thanks for any advice.
sprint is great in miami/broward i never have connection problems, i have only ever had problems inside my actual home because of the postions of the towers in relation to my actual house, but every where else i have between 3-5 bars, and when i use to work at dolphin stadium all the way on the bottom floor i had full signal so yeah.
sprint is great in miami/broward..and i agree t-mobile is pretty slow for us
S Fl is one of Sprint's strongest markets. I was in Hollywood/Pembroke, and got nothing but great signal from there up to Jupiter.
Sprint on average is very strong in florida. I wouldn't worry.
I live in Miramar, and I usually get decent coverage outside...
..that being said, I can't get a single bar of coverage inside this house. Getting an Airave delivered to solve that problem. Make sure you test whether you'll really get good reception in the area where you live, because I'm supposedly right across the street from one of Sprint's towers.
Sprint in my opinion, has better coverage on 3G in S. Florida than at&t and all their hype. I moved from at&t back to Sprint and gave up my iPhone because the service from at&t was so bad. With Sprint, I can be anywhere and I always get my calls and the voice clarity is second to none. Don't hesitate to switch to Sprint. If you can't get good signal in your home, you can buy a femtocell from Sprint that hooks into your Broadband and you get a solid signal. They'll help you out. It's not the Sprint it used to be years ago, that's for sure.

Crap, are you serious? On a side note I had my phones activated and delivered from Wirefly; do you think a PRL update would resolve this coverage problem?

I don't know man, since i flash android in my vogue, i haven't got in roaming anymore.
my mom lives in goulds (aka cutler ridge), i live in hollywood, go to school in boca, and work in miramar. not a single problem theres a single dead spot on 175 and weston for like 10 seconds lol but thats about it. ive driven to orlando and tampa nothing! my at&t phone tends to drop signal like crazy when i travel. and if your buying your phone from sprint pm me go to my damn store lol
Thanks for the info everyone. I went ahead and pre-ordered from Sprint's employee program (Save 10 bucks a month that way). Just got off the phone with the girl, looks like I most likely won't get the phone until Saturday unless Sprint decides to ship the phone early, crossing my fingers but not getting my hopes up on that one LOL
4g will be nice but I will be happy if I can just stay connected to 3g and not constantly be forced onto the older 2g/edge service like is constantly happening to me on T-Mobile.
wait since when was sprint doing pre-orders???
I actually heard a rumor a good chunk of FL gets 4g come the first half of next year. Heard from a sprint rep that could actually count higher than 12.
So the magic question is when will Sprint light up the 4G towers in Miami? Do we really have to wait until next year? If so then it makes little sense for me to jump to Sprint now. Atleast in the North Miami/Aventura area, the 3g signal/downloads speeds were pretty bad compared to Verizon/ATT. This was using a Sprint Express card for notebook.
I'm at&t user right now and considering to buy htc evo 4g with sprint.
All of my friends are using either at&t or verizon so I don't have any idea about sprint.
Is sprint 3g coverage in columbus ohio good enough to use?
Thanks for any advice.
on the sprint official website they have a coverage map.
When I went to Easton, the 3G works just fine. It works well in the Lancaster area also.
I seen somewhere that Columbus / Cincinnati are suppose to get 4G this year..
nice i'm in cincinnati oh
Cinci and Cleveland are first in Ohio, sprint.com/4g for more info.... good to know I'll have 4G when I come back to see the family.

I live in Licking County and for the most part coverage is very good. I get a couple bad spots when driving across the county...
I work in Columbus and get very good service but it can get spotty when inside buildings when in downtown Columbus. The weird thing is I'll be standing next to someone with at&t or verizon and their service is good.... I'm starting to think sprints signal is weaker and has trouble penetrating buildings bc of this! It happens to me all the time bc I'm downtown ALOT. Once outside of the buildings, my Sprint service is great and pretty decent 3G speeds.
I live in Columbus (westerville) and got an HTC HERO for my wife and used it for a few days, no coverage problems thoughout the easton(ish) area and also drive up past marysville on 33 and no problems on the drive.
I have since given her HERO up and am awaiting the EVO
To the poster above me: what sprint phone are you currently on and what phones were the other people using? You would be surprised on how much difference a phone can make in reception, not just the network
Im also near the cincinnati area in butler county ohio. Ive been wondering how far the 4g coverage would extend. In between cincinnati and dayton. ?? Any ideas?

I have seen near the same results from the samsung instinct to my current Palm Pre. With me Pre getting a little better signal than the instinct.
When noticing the differences with Sprint coverage versus at&t & the iphone 3G and the Droid on Verizon. I have noticed them getting much stronger signals indoors downtown columbus in a few different locations.
It kinda rubs me the wrong way but with the difference in $$$, I get over it b/c indoors in downtown columbus is my worst spot....I've already contacted Sprint about each location and they've marked it for a ticket and will research it.
So I have been trying to fix my radio all day and just called sprint to see if they had any outages. The rep told me they were doing some 4g work in Chicago today and mumbled something about Austin also.
Any one having 4g problems around the city?
I live around the O'hare area and the coverage isn't impressive at all. I hope it's just due to them working on the stability, because if that's the best they're going to roll out, it's pretty sad.
I work and travel in and around the washington dc area and I live in frederick maryland. when I first got the evo (day one), the 3g speeds in my area were really good. Say 2MB up and 2MB down. Now I get between 512K down and it's really erratic. Today I'm traveling and am in the NJ area and the speeds are horrible here too.
These are major markets for any carrier. Anyone noticing the same? Could it be congestion perhaps??
Haven't really been checking exact speeds, but just using the browser I have noticed it being slower lately. I was getting nervous it was something internal that might have changed from flashing all these different roms. I doubt it though, hopefully its the network getting ready for 4g!!
same here. when I first got the evo, very quick data speeds. close to 2mb down at work and still descent speeds at home. Now Im roaming in my house half the time, ran a speed test last night and twice got 25kbs, before I would give 750kbs - 1mbs! Called Sprint twice now and they said they have outages through Pennsylvania. Not sure whats up but they said it will be fixed soon. initially they claimed no issues then after prodding them to check the tower, they changed their tune a little. I do get good data in most places but clearly they are having problems in certain areas of Pittsburgh.
been really slow in philly past few days 3g and 4g. seems to have gotten better this morning... 4mbps on 4g and 1.2 on 3g
Blame the world cup
Pretty sure the drop on network speeds is from everyone watching the world cup on sprint tv...
Notice the same... very fast 3g (2mbpsish) speeds June 4th to 6th... after prl update and ota update... very slow (about 500ish)... I went into Samsclub the other day to get a second evo for gf... and noticed 2mbps on 3g again...
My geography hasn't changed...
I work in Hunt Valley, Maryland. The first week, my data was snappy. Now my 3g is crawling. CS did say there were towers down in that area. I live in York, Pa and my data still runs fast there so I'm guessing it is a tower issue. Hopefully they get this fixed ASAP...

I live in Jacksonville Florida and have the same issues. DL is about 300 kbps average. This really sucks. Hopefully they are tweaking the towers for 4G or something. We have 4G now sprinkled around Jacksonville and Orange Park Florida. Rumor has it that Sprint is going to fully unleash 4G in August (Jacksonville).
I'm in the Denver Tech Center area and it seems like Sprint is fixing the 3G issues. I'm seeing about 1.5Mbps average now.
My girlfriend had to exchange her EVO 4G yesterday at an official Sprint service center, and she was told that a lot of the problems we are having around here is because they've been working on the towers to upgrade them to 4G. The guy said they were doing it 'quietly, not announcing anything yet'.
Hope he's telling the truth! So far the closest 4G to here is Richmond, VA. It will be nice to see if this phone actually does 4G, or if that's just what they've been telling me.
I think your GF was feed a load of ____!
Clearwire hasn't been expanding due to money problems and a spat with Sprint. WiMax also runs at 2.5ghz and it's separate from Sprint's CDMA network. Clearwire wouldn't need to touch Sprint's hardware to launch WiMax in any area.
Now if it were Sprint upgrading their base station with their Network Vision plan, that could cause outages since all new hardware is being installed. Still that wouldn't be it because Sprint has publicly stated they will not start those changes till the 2nd half of this year.
If you're lucky, it could be Sprint making the change to Network Vision, in your area, for testing. I doubt that's it though.

False. Clear water is still expanding for the first half of the year. After that they are out of money.

You should have better confirmation before you make a post declaring the 4G is coming Hampton Roads area. I've been getting that same line since I bought my EVO in June. And now since Clearwire is broke and they CEO just resigned, it doesn't look good for WiMax rollouts.
I got all hyped when I read the thead title. Come back when you have something official.
WAVY 10, our local news channel did some investigating in reference to the crappy sms and web service we have been dealing with. What they found was that Sprint network in our area can't handle the amount of new smart phone customers they have signed up with the evo and the epic. They are fixing the system and expect it to be back online correctly by April 1st. We will see!
They have been saying that forever too. Whenever there is a problem, give it a few weeks....then two months go by, and nothing.
4G is already in Hampton Roads. Downtown Norfolk has testing going on. It's not the greatest but it's something. I used it about a week ago while I was on Colley Ave. Coverage was in and out as I drove through downtown but it is working.
I too have been told, by a Sprint Rep in Norfolk at the JANAF shoppong center, that the network outages are caused by the area being upgraded to 4G and for support for more 4G phones. He told me that areas of Norfolk have 4G up unofficially for testing, and an announcment will be made in April.
I decided to test the 4G at a StarBucks near Colley and Princess Anne and it connected. The connection was spotty and Speedtest.net would not connect. The trajic part is as soon as I drove away from the Starbucks I lost the 4G connection and it told me disconnected but radio antenna still on. Its not like Richmond but its a step in the right direction.
We ahve it here in Raleigh and I enjoy it in the spots where it is available. Yeee Haaa, post #10, now I can actually post something usefull.
No 4G in VB yet..at least at lynhaven area 3G data speeds are horrifying though.

Hampton
i havent gotten any 4g service they few times ive been to norfolk lately. Im in Hampton and i cant wait for 4g. But i honestly dont care if we get it. im sure i wouldnt use it alot cause of the battery anyways
look at clear's coverage map.....it shows a section of norfolk and gloucester as having 4g coverage
I live in Norfolk near the airport. i have never gotten any 4g connection. This weekend, I drove all through downtown and still did not get any 4g connection despite the claims in other posts. I will say that my 3g service has been really crappy lately. so i contacted sprint and they told me 4 towers were being worked on and should be fixed by april 1. The agent told me that she was annotating my call in my record and will be giving me a discount on my next month's bill because of failed service. She couldnt say how much but anything is better than nothing Yall should call as well. I'm just saying!

This is true. Whenever I get off work and I'm stuck in traffic going westbound through the downtown tunnel, my Evo connects to 4G with full bars. The speed test results I saw were nothing special though. I only pulled 2.5Mbps down, but that's still better than my 3G speeds of around 200kbps....

It is true! It is true! There is 4g downtown Norfolk. I followed Tidewater drive... to Little creek... made a left on Grandby. I followed Granby to 27th then Colley. The second I hit Colley I had 4 bars at 4g. I pulled over at the Golden Nugget Chinese Restaurant and ran a couple of speed tests. The results 7m down 2mb up Wow! That is awesome comparing to Norfolk's typical 3g service ranging from 200k-700k! I had service from the original find of 9:30 PM to 9:45PM then the signal died. I am not sprint so have no explanation why it went away. I confirmed that it was not a wireless connection..it was in fact 4g. Sprint, when is it coming to the rest of Hampton Roads?
Have you tried to tether with wimax? if so what speeds do you get? The reason I ask is because while downtown i connected to 4g, turned on tethering, then connected with my ipad 2. i was getting crappy crappy speeds like 200k while on the phone i was getting 7mb simultaneously

4G is in parts newport news, norfolk, and of virginia beach. If you can download the sensorly app (in the android market) and find the spots.

Or you can look at Clearwire's coverage map. As of today on the Peninsula it shows Clearwire / Sprint 4G coverage in parts of Williamsburg, Gloucester, and Newport News. In SHR it looks like there's some coverage around downtown Norfolk and in Virginia Beach (around Town Center and Oceana).
