More impressed with 4g than i initially was. - EVO 4G General
First day i had my phone i tried out 4g and wasnt too impressed.. It was having big problems keeping a connection and at times was actually slower than 3g. Well today i decided to put it to the test with some WiFi Tethering. I was able to download an 800 meg torrent file in about 20 minutes. My download peaked at 8.14 megs per second. A lot better than i thought it would be.. Was averaging 4-5 megs per second.

holy crap!
of course, that'll probably drop once more people clog up the 4g network, but lord that's awesome!
You gotta also figure that the 4g network is only going to get better. It will gradually get deeper and wider. I'm coming from At&t and where I am, their coverage is king. It is extremely rare that I would get less than full signal no matter where I went with my Nokia GSM phone. So, its a little new for me to look down at my Sprint Evo and see less than full connection. But so far, it has been solid. It is consistently low but I haven't had any dropped calls and everything seems to be working fine. I've only encountered one area that completely lacked signal (and people say that this is impossible with the sprint/verizon network?....psshaw). I'm still not entirely sold on the network but I think I'm going to keep it.
Sitting here at home, my main signal is one or two bars down but 4g is a solid 1 or 2 bars. Kind of weird...
Yeah, 4g has been increasing in speed since I first tested it. First it was 1mb now it's around 3!

That sounds wrong...
800/5 = 160
160/60 = 2 and a half minutes.
I can see you getting 8.14 mbps in a speed test, but not an 800mb file taking 20min when downloading at 4-5 mbps.
I'm going off the figures that WiFi tether was spitting out. The actual torrent file was downloading at about 500k- 600k. Even on my home broadband connection which tests to about 12mbs per second I rarely get a torrent file downloaded at more than about 1mb per. Sec. I wish bit torrent downloaded at 12 megs per second. Someone else would have to explain it to you, because I can't tell you why your connection can be 8megs a sec and you only download 600k per sec. I assume it has something to do with bittorrent being a file sharing program. Either way, my download was WAY faster than tethering with 3g.
Not too mention 3g and 4g isn't as consistent bandwidth as what comes out of your cable modem. I gave you my peak and a rough average.
Wow I'm gonna have to try that because I haven't been impressed with the 4g yet but I don't use it much because of the battery issues

There is a difference between bytes and bits.
800 megabytes. OP was getting 4-5 megabits per second.
800 megabytes / 20 minutes * 60 seconds = 0.67 megabytes per second or 5.33 megabits per seconds, which is consistent with the 4-5 megabits quote.

Yep, a byte is 8 bits, so 8 megabits per second equals 1 megabyte per second.

Figured everyone knew this.... kinda something you need to look into when you are buying internet for your home or doing speed tests.

Comparison between G2 and HD2 power hunger, strange result.
I did a comparison today between my two phones both running Android Gingerbread (GingerVillain on G2 and CM7 Nightly on HD2). As I suspected the G2 needs/takes more power than the HD2. Strange! Can someone explain why the G2 takes much more power than my HD2? This is how I set things up: Both on Gingerbread (as mentioned above), with Conservative govenor set to exactly the same. HTC Vision G2 set to 245-806 MHz in SetCPU and HTC HD2 set to 245-960 MHz in SetCPU. I have exact the same apps installed on both phones. I have used the same version of Battery Monitor Widget on both phones for measuring the power. Test 1: HTC HD2 with 3G active, HTC Vision G2 without SIM-card, both with WLAN active, Bluetooth inactive, Sync off, Screen off. Measured values (mA) Time: / G2: / HD2: 14:52 / -35 / -8 14:53 / -35 / -8 14:54 / -38 / -38 14:55 / -38 / -20 14:56 / -35 / -72 14:57 / -35 / -13 14:58 / -38 / -67 Average: -36,3 / -32,3 Diff: 11% Test 2: Both phones in Airplane mode, Screen off. Measured values (mA) Time: / G2: / HD2: 15:21 / -43 / -6 15:22 / -42 / -8 15:23 / -42 / -8 15:24 / -42 / -9 15:25 / -42 / -9 15:26 / -42 / -64 15:27 / -42 / -35 Average: -42,1 / -19,9 Diff: 53% Conclusion: Under almost exact the same preferences the G2 needs 11-53% more power than the HD2. And the G2 doesn't even have a SIM card in it, also it's clocked lower than the HD2?? Today I also tried near stock FroYo ROMS and CM 6.1 ROMS on the G2 with approximately the same power hunger. There must be a way to make the G2 take less power? Does your G2's take as much power as mine? I'd be very happy for examples of other ROMs/settings to make the G2 last longer on battery. It should easily outlast my HD2 I think.
ill write you a little tutorial if you like ? i am using stock but i have changed loads of settings to make it last 30hours thats with around 30mins of calls 20 texts 30 mins of gaming (NOVA) 30 mins of xda viewing sent 3 emails facebook for 10 mins internet for 30 mins and listening to music if you want me to then just reply or send me a personal message
Yeah the G2 last a whole lot longer than the HD2 in battery. Its also more powerful too. Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
I am not an expert, so don't know how can i post the stats posted here, but I can say that from the behavior of my G2, I have a feeling that my battery doesn't last longer than 9-10 hours in total. I have an iPhone4 and G2, both are fully charged at the same time, I have to charge my G2 twice when iPhone is still at 25%. I know they both are different and uses different resources but still, I can easily get a day off iPhone but G2 will require atleast a couple of charges per day. Still... I love my G2 more than any other phones I have used in past...
Is it possible for you to post that battery use chart? That would tell us a little more about how you use it. I'm easily getting a full day on my G2 with like 40 percent remaining. Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
i've been very happily surprised at the battery (stock) of my g2. I can currently easily get 30-40 hours of use out of it, on EDGE. 3G/hspa = 28-30. wifi, i dunno, i never use wifi that much. bluetooth ? that's a 30 second at a time thing. I'm using #6 of cyanogenmod's nightly builds. screen set to automagic. maybe your battery is junk ? it happens.
I am at 15% at 12 hours at the most, sometimes 10 hours. But I probably have 30-60 mins of voice, wifi on always, 60 mins of browsing, 30 mins email, 30 mins games, 15 mins Facebook If I start using Maps of GPS though forget it, dead in 5 hours...but same with any phone I had including the HD2 before this. My iPhone lasted longer but I hated it so didn't use it much!

i to noticed that the battery doesn't last long. is it just me or does it take forever to charge? I still love it though
has anyone tried the HTC evo trick i have and it actually works turn the phone on and charge for 8 hours (overnight i did) unplug and turn phone off with the phone turned off plug the charger in and charge it for 1 hour (clockworkmod may start up... just leave it on) unplug and turn the phone on leave it for 10 mins turn it off with the phone turned off plug the charger in and charge it for another hour unplug the charger and turn the phone on it might work.. mine certainly stays at 100% for ages before moving down
after reading up for the past few weeks on here and rooting then getting the proper rom/radio/kernel and setting right my G2's battery is not an issue at all for me. I also noticed it definitely improved as it cycled it when I first got it a few times.
deffo, i agree... after about a weeks use the battery life improves dramatically
One other thing to consider is the strength of the cell signal where you. Despite all the power-saving tricks in the world, if I am at work where the 3G signal is crap (-103 dBm) and the phone is constantly flicking back and forth between 2G & 3G, then my battery life is just horrible. I struggle to make it through my 12hr shift (unless I keep it on 2G, and switch 3G on when I need it). Whereas at home, connected to wifi all the time and my 3G signal is something like -85 dBm, I can easily get through 24hrs usually. The one thing I've hated about Android since my G1 is having to micro-manage stupid things like 2G/3G, screen brightness, etc. I wish I could just leave my phone to sort all that stuff out itself without worrying about my battery, like I did with my old Nokia N73 (admittedly, that phone was horrible in so many other ways compared). With my G1 I resorted to carrying a spare battery around, and that is just a joke. As for the original question "Why does the G2 use more power than the HD2" - who knows? If all else identical except the CPU/hardware then I guess that is the only explanation.

Battery test
well i decided to give my phone a break and left it on minimum usage for almost 4 days now, other than some calls here and there, a bout of angry birds and checking mail via gprs and wifi. after 4 days battery level is at 51%, (using battery indicator pro) and this is quite impressive considering my minimum usage and now am wondering how long it will go. 8days? maybe? this is on stock JPY...no root or lag fixes.
Interesting, Battery Standard battery, Li-Ion 1500 mAh Stand-by Up to 750 h (2G) / Up to 576 h (3G) Talk time Up to 13 h 30 min (2G) / Up to 6 h 30 min (3G) thats the offical line in the specs

Wifi speed drops to 1mbps after a period of time
Does anyone have the issue where if their nexus has been on for a period of time the wifi performance becomes pathetic? Using speedtest.net I clocked my wifi this morning at a little over 1mbps. Rebooting the device brings it back up to satisfactory levels. Within 5 minutes or so it dropped back down to a consistent 2mbps. It's making watching any kind of streaming video on the device impossible, which makes the device pretty useless to me as that was it's primary function.
Bleeding Data
Greetings folks, First month with the s4 and rogers sent me $50 in data overage charges. I checked the phone and was shocked to see 8 Gb's of data use in 1 month. I noticed that playing youtube or streaming on the video player runs through the data at a very high rate. Does 500 Mb of data in less then 30 minutes of streaming seem normal for this phone ?? With the note 2 I had to work really hard to hit 4gb's an would usually run about 2.5 - 3 with heavy use.
streaming video will rocket you toward your data limit. seriously. youtube in 720 or 1080 will burn through a gig in an hour. use wifi for streaming.
Thanks glad to know I am not defective. I want my Note 2 back !
How the hell did Anandtech get 8.7 hours of web browsing?
they say the test is run with the screen at 200 nits. 8.7 hours of screen on time is about twice as much as what I get and what everyone else claims they are getting. what gives?

I then tried another straight hour on the same site(different pages) and I lost 14% and both times the phone was on 44% manual brightness.
