[REQ] 3D Math app - Android Software Development

What I would like is a Maple/Mathematica in the palm of my hands. First I tried contacting Spacetime (http://www.spacetime.us/) since they have a great app for WinMo and iPhone but it seems they aren't going to do an Android port. What? Millions of android geeks and no serious math app?
I have found a powerful open source program and maybe that can be the basis of an Android app (though it is much harder to use)

there's an old port attempt of scilab...but it's in Chinese

[DEV] WinMo based apps VS iPhone based apps..

Seems that WinMo lack of good stuffs... You know that WinMo based devices are equipped with touch screen, but why. WHY even the same app, the iPhone one got really nice GUI than WinMo one?
Try to google some apps that available on both iPhone and WinMo. Even though they got same functionality, the iPhone one got nicer GUI than WinMo.
The WinMo one always got SUCK GUI... That's really not right...
and I hope the first answer isn't just: Buy iPhone instead of complaining. And if you call yourselves a bunch of good programmer then make a program with nice interface like iPhone's apps instead of ordinary conventional WinMo apps...
the only ewplanation dude is that WM phones are corporate oriented instead of the Iphone.
Apple also spend lot of money in advertising to let people know about the iphone and hire lots of sbcontractors in order to develop games and apps.... so that is why lots of programmer and designer are working with the Iphone...
But I think this is going to change in the next future as HTC finally understood that the need to spent money on advertising
Nice answer... thanks... ^^
But, you know moTweets right?
The super cheap Twitter client (only US$3.99) that Panoramic Software developed.
It has a very nice GUI like iPhone, got complete and perfectly-working feature as well.
And this morning I asked Panoramic to develop Facebook application as well, since there is no single good/decent Facebook application for WinMo yet.
I asked them to make Facebook application for WinMo with nice GUI like moTweets and the functionality like Facebook for BlackBerry.
And here's their answer to my idea (we had conversation via Twitter) @PanoramicSoft: "We will definitely consider creating a Facebook app for WinMo. Thanks."
So, just tweet them and give them a vote.
They're surveying whether they need to develop this app or not.

Yes there is. Microsoft developed one.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/downloads/facebook.mspx
Yup, I'm aware of that software. But is it a good one? It just a failure I think. Can't even load the NewsFeed properly, need manual refresh to get the current feed. What I mean is: the one that got feature like BlackBerry's Facebok program and nice iPhone-like GUI.
And forgot to tell you. Do you notice that Microsoft's Facebook app just stuck at 1.0.0.7p with no future development?
Me, personally won't count it a program, its a complete failure and crap that Microsoft released to fulfill user's demand for Facebook app. Am I wrong? ^^
Cheers... ^^
Hy,
i think that apple has a brilliant marketing strategie for iphone. But not more!!!
No, you're wrong. We, as a bunch of good developer, surely can make programs like iPhone one. isn't the GUI just a drawings after all? If we can skin our ordinary apps into something eyecatching like iPhone's app, then why not?
You know the fact: Blackberry got nice working Facebook app, iPhone also got one. What about our so called legendary OS WinMo? The oldest even before iPhone. Not even single decent Facebook app!!!
Am I wrong?
If you count the Microsoft's Facebook app as the good one, then I guess it can't be helped. But I'm really not satisfied with that not-working program.
Some men see things as they are and say why - I dream things that never were and say why not.
Since the first reply was not just go get an Iphone, this reply should be good enough. Just get an Iphone then
Well, WM is much older, so most apps out there are still ugly and stylus-dependent.
Also it was first made for businessmen, not the common user, we just adapted it to our needs with TONS of amateur freeware here.
And since the iPhone is new (and because of that, vastly superior on video card and CPU), there arent ppl around with old hardware.
And dont get me started on the games department... stop making frikking puzzles and start making quakes!
I think the main issue is the SDK. There are a lot of easy libraries for the iPhone that make it easy to make a nice looking program for the iPhone. WinMo is starting to add some nicer looking buttons and stuff to it's library, so hopefully around WM7 time, people will be creating stuff on an equal scale.
The other big issue for WinMo as opposed to iPhone, is that when you are devoloping for the iPhone, you only have 1 screen size, and 1 hardware spec to deal with. With WinMo, you have to account for all of the different phones and different hardware.
Where is this nice GUI for the iPhone you have been talking about? I have yet to see anything but a bunch of icon for a GUI?
So if you look at these two images you would chose the iPhone GUI over the WinMobile one? Long story short, we can make our WinMobile's look like an iPhone but can they make there iPhone's look like WinMobile? Yes there is a lot of new cool stuff out there for iPhone as far as apps go but how much of it is free and how much of it is actually useful?

I agree totaly with TS. All the winmobile applications looks like crap, they look the same they did like 4-5 years ago, there is a "arcade pack" for touch pro, and seriously I think nintendo 8bit has better graphics. Every application always looks like crap games look and work like crap. You guys always say that HTC phones are mostly made for office people but seriously have many of you actully are office people and not techis like me? I love the htc phones, the idea of having a mobile with windows is teh ****. I think winmobile phones could be 100% better then Iphone, it's been around alot longer then iphone, iphone has been around for 2 years and it kicks htc's asssss!

Agreed! I think so too!
This argument isn't over which platform is better for everyday use, it's only about the UI of applications. There's no doubt, the *average* program on the iPhone looks a lot better than the *average* program on WM.

But now, it's used as a standard PDA-Phone instead of businessman.
And most of my friend use WinMo PDAs like TP2, but they only use it for game, facebook, and stuffs.
About hardware, the iPhone's hardware isn't better than today's PDA. Well, the big issue maybe the VGA driver. Today's WinMo isn't equipped with decent VGA drivers. But, blame on the PDA's maker for it.
And about game, I totally agree with you. Stop making those card and tetris game. That's why WinMo isn't well developed. Developers just need to start making those 3D games like -again- iPhone's. There's no better games than iPhone's.
We got far more superior hardware, but why? Why ppl never utilize it? They only make those card and tetris and puzzle game. 2D ugly boring game.
And one question: Can the devs just make a new app with futuristic GUI? Again: Panoramic's moTweets got nice GUI. iPhone like GUI indeed.

About screen, I guess you're right. But what I'm talking about isn't the screen size. It's about make those button image looks futuristic and more eye catching. It's about art and graphic design right?
And not to speak bad about MS. I simply lost faith in MS. MS' simple program, their Facebook program for example, can you count it as a good program?
Isn't that just a matter of making the graphics? Is it really need a SDK to create those graphics?

Yes, its the ICON and buttons and sort of that things actually needed in WinMo's apps.
You see that we got far more superior hardware than iPhone. But why wasting that resource?
As developers, we can make something useful (not like a bunch of useless crap in iPhone) but in such an artistic way. Just replace those old button with glossy button and more futuristic shape. Isn't that just a matter of making the graphics? Is it really need a SDK to create those graphics?
Another example: Palringo messaging got nice GUI as well. So y'all know I'm not promoting moTweets.

How slow, even Microsoft don't have any good intention to upgrade such a small program like their Facebook program. And I really laugh about WinMo 7. More bugs will come while the old bugs still there.
The WinMo 7 will got nice GUI indeed, but we're talking about the apps. Take the SMS app for example. It just like the oooolllllldddd WinMo's SMS GUI. Look at iPhone's one. Even though we got threading SMS as well but the INTERFACE is really ugly.

The question is: Is it really hard to make a good buttons and icons and you know; just to mention a few of it: some nice messaging box, glossy and round-edged button, transparent icon, remove the left-right and up-down old navigation bar that used for scrolling and replace it with kinetic-scrolling, etc etc..

I think I miss Windows Mobile 6! Tell me I'm crazy...

I'm a former user of an HTC Touch Diamond. Thanks to these forums, I was able to customize nearly anything and everything on that device. I retired my Diamond about a month ago when I got my Xperia X10, and I found myself missing my Diamond.
Xperia Pros:
The Screen! The display is huge and amazing!
Android market. So many great apps to choose from.
Android OS. The stock apps and launchers seem really great to use. Lots of features and eye candy out of the box.
Xperia Cons:
Micro-USB / Connector Cover. It has made my 6 mini-usb cables and charger useless, and the cover is annoying to open.
Touch Screen. I found myself annoyed by the capacitive screen. I'm a guy, and I don't feel the need to have soft moist hands. The capacitive screen has given me so much grief, while I never had any problems with any resistive screens in the past.
Battery. I know every complains about battery life, but it was pretty much the same as my Diamond. The only difference is that my Diamond has a huge extended battery available for purchase.
Android market. Tons of "little" apps, but no real powerhouse apps that fit my own needs. I found I needed to download/buy 3 different apps that did the job of one Windows Mobile app.
Voice Dialing. Where is it? My city just enforced some crazy cellphone laws, and I really need this. It sucks on the Xperia. Big time.
Diamond Pros:
Fantastic Apps! S2U2 is amazing. It's a lockscreen that gives you so much access to viewing info (email, sms, etc) without a risk of unlocking your phone accidentally. Magicall let me have push email without the battery use, as well as many other fantastic calling and SMS features.
OpnMarket. Tons of great apps available from FreewarePPC.
Resistive screen. So much better for me than the capacitive screen.
Amazing customizability. Not just the ROMs, since I'm sure the X10 will get a few soon, but everything seemed to be easier to customize and change in Windows. Maybe I just need to learn more about Android.
Diamond Cons:
Tiny tiny tiny screen. This is the only reason I didn't go back.
Windows Mobile stock OS really sucks, and needs all the apps to add the eye candy and features.
Sometimes sluggish with all the hacks, patches, and customizations.
Strangely enough, I find myself sorely missing Windows Mobile. I really wish I could at least find an app exactly like S2U2 on Android. I've tried a few lockscreens, and they don't even lock the device properly. They seem to be just homescreen replacements. Lack of a proper voicedial app on the Xperia is also a huge con. Any other recent Windows Mobile converts feel the same way?

No you're not CRAZY!
100,000 Apps for Android? I think that smartphone users today don't understand that App is short for Application and they're being pretty liberal calling most of what's available an Application.
The simple fact that Google doesn't offer a fast and easy solution for Outlook sync is plain stupid. Even the iPhone will sync with Outlook. The Google "Cloud" sync takes far more user input than WinMo does so it's far from effective.
When WinMo 7 is up and running I'll be putting this Android fiasco behind me.
P.S. if you're a teenage girl then Android should be right for you.
Battery life on the diamond with extended battery and latest stock rom was total and utter **** if you ask me, it was the most useless batterylife of any device i've ever experienced and the diamond overall... ok i did like it when i first got it but that phone felt outdated within 3 months, i love my new x10 and my battery is great, even amazing compared to diamonds. In fact i could drain both the original and the extended on diamond within 32h and the x10 battery ticks way over 48h now with normal useage

I agree to some of it. The lousy not so touch friendly UI of WM never really bothered me as we get to use it less. I love the level of customization that can be done to WM like Panels, Today screen, smart dialer, etc.
I think most of the current generation mobile OS got the luxury of faster processors, more memory to feel more fluid. Each never version is basically trying to catch up with WM capability but with touch friendly UI.
I think the failure story of WM wouldn't have been this bad if only Microsoft invested time to improve their default browser years back and made the menu's, buttons, etc more bigger so they are more user friendly.
I played with my friends HD2 and like it a lot except for the browser.
First of all I bought an Android device because I never thought they were that great but felt it was unfair to criticise without having used one a for a period of time.
Now that I am an owner of several WinMo devices and one Android device I feel I can point out the differences fairly – Sorry in advance to the Android Fanboys.
For someone that is more interested in a useful device for business applications and uses a Windows based PC’s then WinMo is the clear winner. For someone that wants to have a toy for social networking then Android is the clear winner.
I’m sure there are many people on the planet that are so important that they need to Facebook and Twitter/Buzz every single move they make during the day and hopefully they use Latitude so everyone knows exactly where this tremdously important event took place.
Bottom line is that they are 2 different platforms that cater to 2 different groups of people. One isn’t better than the other, they’re just different. WinMo users read newspapers, Android users read comic books. Neither is better than the other, they’re just different.
I’ve spent 2 weeks looking at “Top 10” and “Must have Android Apps” blogs as well as spending time on AppBrain. I’m not saying there aren’t any useful Android Apps but they certainly don’t number in the thousands or even the hundreds. Below is what I found to be somewhat useful but I can still do better on a WinMo device running 6.1 pro.
Astro File Manager
BetterKeyboard
ChompSMS
eBay
GDocs
Imap Weather
IMDB
IP Cam Viewer
K-9 Mail
MyRogers
NetCounter
Newsrob
Quick Reboot
Remote VNC
Roboform
Speedtest.net
SwiFTP
TD Bank
Titanium Backup
Weather Bug
XDA
Wikidroid for Wikipedia
P.S. Using Remote VNC on the Android is like torture. On the WinMo device I can login, do a few quick things and logout while sitting at a red light. To do the same thing with the Android VNC viewer it would be faster to drive home and use the keyboard.

My point exactly
Just enter the discussion, I still own my HD2 with custom ROM. As Izzy said, if you are a business person WM is the best for you, Even after I purchased Moxier with Widget and stuff its not anywhere close to WM even 6.1. WM is more solid and it is because it has been around for longer and android might be there one day. But reason I chose Android was to go with a different approach and I still like it and not regretting it. As you start developing more things and gets updated to higher Android Version you may become more satisfied.
Part of our problem is SE by locking the phone with their junk which is not useful to all of us. In WM phone you have option to go either with WM solid or their customized UI.
At the end, I am not a person stick to my phone for any longer than 6 to 10 months so in case I need to move to another platform then no problem. Right now, I don't want to go back to 6.5 even with missing option on Android.

I feel the same too. I used to have a HTC Universal, and there were so many power apps/applications (Whatever you want to call them), that Android doesn't have yet. I didn't even use most of them, as I didn't have a need for them, but at least there was a choice available.
I think Android may soon have this 'choice' that I'm talking about, but I do understand what you mean (@ big_raji).
I share your sentiments regarding winmo 6.1/6.5. Winmo is such a mature platform just like symbian and palmOS. These bad boys of the old gen were not pretty to look at, but they got stuff done.
What boggles my mind is how Android failed to support system wide copy/paste; especially in their native gmail app. Only recently did they start to address this (2.2 update).
Another annoyance I have with Android is its connectivity capabilities. Why can't it do things like tether, bluetooth file transfer, and sync with local storage out of the box?
I know that some of my complaints can be solved with apps in the market, but the thing is many of these features should be standard. That's my problem with the new gen of mobile OS's. They don't look to the past to see what made phones "smart".
I'm in no way downplaying what innovations have been brought to smartphones. I just think that phones these days are more just multimedia consumption devices rather than the productivity assistants they grew up from. That is why I am so nervous about windows phone 7. If microsoft screws that up, all that will be left of the old guard that "just works" as a work tool will be blackberry and symbian^3.
I know I've said a lot. I'm sure people will disagree and take offense, but know that my definition of a smartphone is a device which lets me be productive while being mobile. If it has decent multimedia capabilities, that's also good.

Tell me about it. The first day I started with Android I paired my Bluetooth earpiece, pressed the call button and waited for the X10 to come alive and wait for a voice dial command. After pressing it several times, reconnecting, I googled to discover that Android doesn't do that. Are you freaking kidding me? My 5 year old RAZR does voice dial! Maybe they should have focused on the tools before the toys?

Thinking of switching OS's

I'm currently the owner of a Samsung Epic 4G & although I really like the device I was strongly considering switching OS from Android to webOS or maybe WP7. Well as far as APP developing goes... WP7 has a wider developing network so IF your okay with webOS and its limited APP selection and lack of any modern APPS being updated/released for it then go ahead and switch to webOS.
WP7.1 (Mango) should be releases sometime this year with more powerful phones so if you decide to switch to WP7 i would suggest waiting it out and see what better devices are named in the lunch event and who knows HP might mention something regarding new phones during that time frame
Whats holding webOS back is the lack of any innovative or at lease powerful phones to compete with Android or Apple. So if developers don't see any real competition between phones they won't develop for that platform and customers would be turned away
I've used all OS's
iOS has the largest collection of High Quality Apps, and that gets peoples attention
Android has the best selection of phones with a Good APP market and gives people Options
WP7 has decent Phones and as far as APPs go.. its OK
webOS defines MultiTasking, but virtually no app support and weak phones. People walk by a Pre and don't know what it is so they don't get it
iOS is Apple and everybody wants an Apple product (mostly)
Android is Google and who hasn't heard about them
WP7 is Microsoft and has promoted it better then Palm/HP has ever done
webos has no backbone or software Giant to back it up
___________________________________________________
Me Personally would choose WP7 i like the overall Feel of it and the HD7. The Pre3 looks good but in the Long Run i have better options with WP7 as far as apps go. If HP licenses webOS and HTC puts it on their Phones, Hell will brake loose on the competition
Should you or Shouldn't you is all personal Preference "To each their Own" some people would say WP7!! or will do the same with Android and webOS but the best we can do is open the doors and tell you whats on the other side but only you make the decision of which door to walk thru
I've got an Android T-Mobile G2 (aka HTC Desire Z) and an original Palm pre. Here's my comparison of these two:
Android has more apps, and doesn't have the country restrictions that webOS has.
Most of the Android apps suck. 90% of the apps I download on Android I delete because they're so bad.
Android has better apps, but webOS has more useful apps. I'm looking through my apps on each. Android has apps like Stupid Zombies and Google Goggles which are really cool apps, but I don't use them very often and don't miss them now that I'm using my pre (yes I'm using the 2 years older device).
Android has Google apps (or better versions at least). Google maps is crippled on webOS compared to Android. Android also has Goggles, Latitude, Navigation, Talk.
Android phones have better screen resolutions and therefore look nicer.
webOS phone screens work better in strong sunlight. 20% brightness on my pre is clearer than 100% on my G2.
webOS screen is more responsive to touch input. This surprised me, because it has a smaller screen I thought it would be worse.
Hardware keyboards are both excellent. If you like physical buttons (e.g. call/end) you have options with Android.
Camera is better quality on G2.
No memory expansion on webOS devices. I can put in up to a 32GB microSD on my G2.
webOS is faster. I was surprised to find that my 2 year old pre is just as fast as my new G2. I even thought there was a fault with my G2, but checked it with my supplier and they said it's fine. I think that the background apps and services on Android slow it down so that the better hardware is crippled.
Battery life is better on my pre. Probably because of all the background apps on Android. The smaller screen probably helps too.
Customising webOS is easier than customising Android. For starters you don't need to root the device. I haven't come across any restrictions on webOS.
webOS backups are better than Android. webOS automatically backs up every setting and app you've installed from the App Catalogue. Android backs up some, but not all, and I can't figure out which ones.
Facebook app, synchronising, and notifications are better on webOS.
Synergy on webOS manages your contacts, calendars and e-mails better than Android.
Searching is better on webOS (Just Type). On Android it's inconsistent.
Dialing a contact is quicker and easier on webOS. You can search your contacts from the phone pad, or even cards view (kind of the webOS version of a home page).
Multitasking is waaaaaaay better on webOS.
I tried to keep this unbiased, but I want to say one thing that is very personal and biased. My Android phone frustrates me, my webOS phone doesn't. Android has some amazing stand-out features, but I think it lacks focus on the little things. WebOS may not have all the big features of Android, but what it does it does well, and with attention to detail.
Edit: I just remembered that Palm Pixi Plus' are selling on Amazon for only US$52. That's cheap enough for me that I'd get one just to try it. Thought you might be interested.
Ill have to admit I loved webos when I had it...... that is when it wasn't lagging, freezing, resetting. Which seemed to be on a daily basis. Multitasking at its best! But performance and app selection is far from android or ios. My personal opinion would be to stick with android simply because of the personalization and performance aspects. If we could see support for webos on some HTC phones I would make the jump and never look back, assuming app development progressed!

i have a friend here that has a palm pre 2... which is so beautiful... i fell inlove with the multi tasking... and its not just like it minimizes the application its really running the apps... i even tried running 4 games and a couple of web browsers... it was lagging ofcourse but still its amazing... and its easier to root the phone and warranty does not get voided coz you could still put it back very easy... but it has some updates it still needs... like it does not have yet a virtual keyboard which is weird but soon to be applied
If HP treats Web OS right, Web Os can grow enormously.
I Have a palm pre and an htc hd2, And being able to run both android and wp7 on it, i know what both are like. WP7 is very smooth, and quite a nice OS, although I'm still in love with android. WebOS is GREAT beside its lack of development/app support, so it gets very boring. Overall i'd say just stick with android, you can do a lot of fun/cool things with it and development for it is rapidly growing. Android is my favorite OS and will remain that way. Just my oppinion, Hope it helps!
My GF has a Pre Plus webos 1.4.5, and I have a Xperia X10 Android 2.1. Her Pre drives me nuts, the only thing I like about it is the multitasking.
I've got a lot more apps, and they are way more useful than the ones available on her phone. Granted, if the rumors surrounding the possibility that Samsung will start producing Webos phones then it might see more good apps.
The touch sensor on her pre is better than my X10, and too a crazy degree.
Her phone is a whole lot slower than my phone, web, apps, you name it. And her phone's battery only lasts 6-8 hours before it is dead.
Finally, she has gone through two Pre Plus phones, and they are both buggy as hell.
I've had a Pre with WebOs and can say I miss the quick flipping through apps and easily closing them. No need for apps to monitor what's still open so you know to kill it.
I thought WebOs was the most intuitive OS out there. Andam looking forward to it on something other than a Pre. If it was flashable onto an epic I would probably do it.
I enjoy the flexibility of android but haven't found anything webos wasn't able to do as good. It is only the hardware holding webos back.

I too first started with a palm pre plus for my first smart phone and found webOS is far superior to Android.. it just lacked the developers. Would be nice if Android had a ui like webOS..

HP only canned the hardware, not the OS itself. I would say they shot themselves in the foot, but webOS is still alive and kicking. Just look at the increase in traffic in these forums.
gotta say since getting an android phone after having a windows mobile and an iphone i personally prefer android but i do wanna try out webos

Windows phone vs Android

A little off-topic guys.
Christmas is coming and telephone operators are throwing really very "nasty" offers. I have a choice to get Samsung Galaxy S2 or Nokia Lumia 800 for 0€. Inspite of really nice SG2 phone I'm so tempted to get to Microsoft camp and get a taste of Mango. Damn it's hard to decide.
The only big drawback of Nokia phone I find is missing option of usb mass storage. So dumb! What they were thinking off?
SG2 only drawback is that it's already getting old, and yeah, it's Android
Nokia Lumia 800
Samsung Galaxy S2
Your choice?
Keep the Hero
If I need to choose betwein those 2, the android one, but I would not pick either.
Thanks for your opinion. I would pick Galaxy Nexus, but unfortunately it is out of my budget.

That is the one I want, not that any pocket in any pants I got is big enough for it. The hero hardly fits and no not really a handbag person... And yes I am tiny.. so I got tiny pants
---------- Post added at 09:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:52 PM ----------
Just want to add something. How I think on getting new stuff. If I want something new. I want to make sure it is the thing that I want. And not a thing that is maybe cheaper but not the thing that I want. In this case that is an android phone that runs 2.3 I do not want that. I want to start with 4.0. But some say the GPS on the Nexus is crap. Not that I know of. but I will see what I will get in like 4 months or so. Happy with this device.
I would pick android. Think of what has made ur hero last this long. It is because you can tweak and customize it and upgrade to newer os versions even though it's old.
sent with love from me to you
LOL you shouldn't have to think about that really IMHO.. The lumia is plainly UGLY and windows phone is CRAP.. the sgs2 all the way. Android hands down mate, plus the sgs2 beats the lumia specs wise too. It's a win win situation.

dude the lumia is absolutely GORGEOUS! It's so pretty I am genuinely considering dealing with all the poor specs just to wrap my unworthy hands around it.
I just can't give a serieus answer, isn't it obvious which one to choose? SGS II is better in every way and believe me when windows phone 8.0 comes out you are going to be so sorry for choosing the lumia instead of the SGS II, in the future you can update the SGS II with and without a custom rom to android 4.0 and up. There aint much to think about just saying..
Lumia is a nice phone and Mango has sorted much of the issues with wp 7, though on long run (2 yrs) i'm considering if i'd be happy with it. kinda in the same spot looking what to get, but i'm between Sensation and incredible S (affordable) on the android front and Lumia and Titan on the wp7 front.
I would pick Samsung Galaxy S2 ... just because i don't like the interface of a Windows Phone . The OS is ugly as hell, I was in a store last week looking at some phones and I almost puked after 30 seconds of looking at Windows Phones but I recovered while looking at the Home Screen of my HTC Hero. Android's interface is great and by far the best... but that's my opinion and everyone likes different things.
Stick to Android alot more customizable
Even though m getting a sensation still wanna learn more abt Android, n my hero is probably the best testing ground

The sgs2 is an awesome phone, but have you considered the new Sony erricson? The arc s.. it's in your budget and with a whopping 1.4ghz processor and impressive looks in comparison to the sgs2 you can't go wrong
Sent from my Hero using xda premium
I would go for SGS2 as it is still among the best android phone available atm.
Plus, there is plenty of development interest going on for SGS2, with lot's of flashing around so you won't be bored for a long time.
It still has got the best available specs for hardwarewise.
It does not have the Arc's dreaded housing crack problem.
It does not have the HTC's Sensation and like models of dust under the screen as faced by some users.
The only thing you may miss is there's no Sense.
Or..if not
Just grab the one that has got the highest resale value.
Sell it off when it's new to finance your purchase of your dream phone (a Galaxy Nexus perhaps?).
Don't dismiss WP7 until you've tried it. I think windows phone has got a bad reputation from previous versions but after using WP7 on a HTC Mozart I think that it is incredible. It is so unique and I only know one other person who has one. For me, I think I'm going towards WP7
There is serious reason I want to quit Android camp.
The problem with android is that it is too open. There is a limit with providing good SDK and allowing to make apps based only on it or allowing to do whatever you want and making crapload of ****. Android programmer base is so dumb, they don't know anything about performance or battery optimization or background task handling. Android market is blunt loaded with web page scrappers, wrappers and xml parsers. To make a some mobile web page wrapper takes me 5 min and some don't even have any shame to ask money for that. Majority of Android app devs are just amateurs, weekend java programmers or ex web developers with no any clue what mobile platform is and that there is some limit in available RAM, processing power, storage and etc.
Android market maybe is a lot bigger than windows market, but when you look at quality then we come down to the same number or even worse.
Sorry for rant, but 2 years ago I put big fate in Android and Google which totally failed me by providing competitive mobile platform. Android, even with ICS 4.0 today is still 2 years behind iOS and now also WM7. They need 2 dual core most powerful CPUs in a world to accomplish the same task what WM7 can do with single core and half RAM and even then they fail.
Oh well .....
iOS vs Android vs Window Phone
This is a major problem these days. I was thinking to get a new phone these days to...so i spent a lot of time in reading about the new features the platforms have to offer and it seems that there are lot of tiny parts in every os that make every day use to be more exciting and easy.
I will start to make a comparison on every os on what is has or what's missing
1.Windows Phone
-it's snappy
-interesting interface
-facebook and tweeter integrated
-easy to use
-microsoft servers with 30 GB space to store media
-no OTA updates
-no usb storage (you need a program to do that)
-limited hardware (this is because microsoft made a decision on this part)
-multitasking is not in real time
-the number of app is limited (~35k)
-not open sourced...so if your phone gets old, it's harder to make some custom roms
2.Android
-snappy but sometimes laggy
-usb storage
-full customization of the screens
-real time multitasking
-since 4.0 we have a better browsing experience
-lot's of app
-easy to make a rom or flash one
-Google apps (Maps + navigation = damn i'm in love )
-the new gen of phones get big screens and that's very stupid (as lira said...it can't fit in the pocket and i fully agree)
-i hate the part when a new version of android appears and it takes months to get an updated phone
-in some roms we have to much apps from the developer (take htc for example)
-i think the system needs better and better hardware so you can get a better experience
3.iOs
-snappy
-the os with the biggets number of apps
-very easy to use
-every new version can be installed after it appears (if your phone can handle it)
-since we talk about iOs we talk about iphone and on thing that i like is that is has a 3.5 screen
-it has siri and it's fun and useful
-good browsing
-no usb storage...but i heard that you don't need iTunes if you need to transfer a document or things like that (not sure there)
-no customization on the screen, just icons of the programs that you have
-no OTA updates
-can't make a custom rom
@ every rom - maybe i missed some stuff
@whitealien -> not into nokia (WP7.5) since it has stupid limitation and to much social stuff (i don't use facebook or things like that)
-SGS II is a good phone, lot's of people use it and want it and since i know some friends that had an iPhone and now have a SGS II and are more pleased with it
-sometimes i think why buy a phone and not a tablet, that's better thank a phone from more points : starting from gaming and finishing with watching movies.
The choice is your...i'm tempted to get a new phone and change the platform to see new things but i realize that android gets new and new features every day.
I think that it's better to wait for the release of the SGS III and the new qualcomm S4 chips or tegra III on phones [but why need these chips when you can do your every day use with a dual core phone without any problems??]

I will a little argue with this. No OTA updates - there is updates and Nokia is taking it very serious. They just rolled one out on 7 dec.
- limited HW, you mean a little outdated? Thats true, only single core and 512RAM, but seems to be enough
- multitasking is not in real time - not entirely true, it depends how apps are programmed. They can work in bg if they are programmed to
- the number of app is limited (~35k) - are you serious , I never had more than 50 apps installed
- my very 1st smartphone was HTC Touch Polaris with WM6.5 so I know what closed source is
I found 5 major flaws in Lumia 800
1. only 16Gb integrated storage
2. no usb mass storage
3. no front camera (really, these days?)
4. no notification LEDS, not even one single led, lol.
5. Pentile Amoled display
And yeah SG2 is not perfect too. Build quality is so poor. Back cover is cheap and fragile. Have seen broken ones. Also whole construction is fragile, including big screen. Don't ever put it in your jeans back pocket or you will regret

Well, if they were not obsessed with huge phones, enormous screens, poor battery life, sad build style (all gray or black) and somehow over blunted Sense (comon, why there is weather animation everywhere, even in lockscreen) maybe I would go HTC. My 1st idea was to take HTC Radar, but at closer look I find it kinda too big for offered screen size (the bottom part is so long). White is cool so.

I was thinking on a a HTC radar too but it's not so speedy... and from the part that hardware is old, this isn't a problem, it's a thing made by microsoft and it seems that apps work very well:d

you will not be as happy if you leave android imho.
I'm surprised this is even a serious discussion.
Here are my personal reasons why I say that, after using ios and android devices full time professionally for a while and briefly dabbling in winphone7:
It's becoming increasingly accepted by unpartial reviewer and testers...
(except by:
those who have never used android for a useful length of time
or for those who are looking for very simple user experience without any interest in customization or for "power user" features
)
... that iOS is quite inferior to Android in many ways.
Apple notifications were almost useless until ios 5 and even now are only scratching the surface of what android notifications provide.
ios gives you app icons on your home screen. that's it. no widgets or spaces or custom layouts or sources of useful dynamic information (other htan completely USELESS counters on each icon showing outstanding notification events that have passed wihtout your knowledge because of how crappy iOS's notifications are).
ios gives you no customization other than crappy ordering control which is forgetful
I work wtih an ipad daily and it is a PAIN IN THE ASS - I have learned to hate iOS, specially for tablets or power users, but even for a phone os it is truly annoying and very limited.
windows phone is cool but also limiting, very very limiting, and has rather poor app support at the moment compared to either of the big ones.
there are several reasons why android has become the most popular mobile phone OS - and it isn't just because google gives it away for free.
It's also because Android is the only one that is fully customizable. windows phone is SORT of but not nearly as truly customizable as android.
IMHO the windows phone launcher fake app for android (in the market) is actually superior to the real windows phone device I was playing with because it supported android widgets. But if you want to try out windows phone 7, get that launcher - it truly does give you the winphone7 experience with all it's boring limitations.
the thing that's great about apple devices is the huge and still superior application/game support (if you spend the bucks or jailbreak it then install installous and cydia).
I used to say that iOS was better for little kids. but my little kids (2 and 5 at the time) used android tablets without ANY trouble at all. my little kids (now 3 and 6) use an iPAD without many issues either but do get confused when holding a finger too long on an icon and then out of hte blue they all start wiggling and next thing I know apps are being deleted by little fingers. Android turns out to be far more intuitive in this regard compared to iOS. sometimes dumbing down the OS can be taken to the point of making it more complex to understand. It's an either or situation here, but typically in other ways I do think iOS is easier for very very simplistic minds to accept. This should not be a benefit for anyone here however LoL.
the thing that makes android superior for adults is it's ability to be completely and easily customized for everyone who uses it. it's YOUR phone, use it how you like. don't let apple tell you that you can't sync on this computer wtih this itunes on this day in this weather - I swear to god it is nearly that flaky and limiting to use iOS devices. you have music on your phone and want to copy it to your friend's phone? nope. you want your frien'ds music? nope. not unless you're lugging your laptop around so you can copy the files to/from your itunes folder, NOT directly to/from the device.
also android has a free terminal emulator app in the market. it works perfectly and runs bash as well as my desktop. iOS runs somehting similar but makes it incredibly hard to get that sort of control, even after jailbreaking and installing tons of underground apps it is still a kludgy and unreliable bash prompt control system you get in ios which requires a separate terminal emulator to control it (even a term app on your same device will get you there, but that alone is pretty annoying to have to deal with since you first have to actually get your low level underlying linux type system working on the iOS device....)
maybe some of my iOS negative points are improved in ios 5 but it is still light years behind the flexibility that we are all imho owed by buying the device and buying a license to use the operating system in the first place. I OWN my files. I can put them on my phone or my friend's phone if I choose to.
I buy a mac or a windows computer and I can get at all parts of the OS and mess around with it completely. why can't I do that on an iPAD that costs 2 to 3 times as much as a similar android tablet which is a full linux-based computer right from the get go?
I have a lot of inside info and have watched the devices and OSes grow and change over the years. Historically, in many ways, the best os for smart phones was palm webOS. but the hardware/company were slow/moronic respectively (which is why my brother quit as VP of Engineering of PalmSource... check this link for an interview with him back when things were still early and exciting at palm's mobile operating system dev company: http://www.linuxfordevices.com/c/a/...w-Michael-Kelley-and-John-Cook-of-PalmSource/ )
Anyway - android is quite literally the only way to go for a mobile OS at this time if you dont' want to be tied down to a specific vendor/company of hardware and don't want to be given one user interface with one way to operate the phone.
Ever noticed now winphone7 uses only about 60% of your display for it's main UI? annoying, at best.
yes, they're quick, iOS and winmo7 devices. and yes every brand has good hardware (and bad in some cases). however htc android devices do reign supreme in popularity and market share for a good reason (as outlined above by me and others). but even stock android devices are way cool.
having worked with android tables/phones and ios tablets/phones I have decided very definitely that I will never buy an ios device. having worked with winphone7 for a short time I found it quite acceptable, like iOS. but extremely uninspiring and it's customizability is even worse than iOS's.

[Q] My thoughts on Android vs iOS apps

I recently got myself a Nexus 4, my first Android phone, and had been using it as my main phone for the past five days. I come from the iOS world (keen jailbreaker) and my initial reactions were very positive:
Love widgets and how convenient they can be
Love the extent of customisation
Love the big screen and clean UI in general
Love the hardware (camera and speed)
Love Google service integration (maps, contact, calendar) = just works
However, there is one aspect that really bothers me and I wanted to hear what other people think.
APPS.
iOS apps are often more polished than their Android equivalent, in another word they contain less bugs. I find Android apps crash more often and some of the functions don’t always work. Example: I found a bug in Skype that the ringing tone continues to sound even after the call is connected. Skype has been around for so many years and yet there is a bug?
.
Android don’t always get the newest or most updated apps because it is easier for developers to create apps on iOS. This can lead to some core function of an apps missing compare to their equivalent on iOS. Example: I have a Synology NAS at home that acts as my media hub, which can be remotely accessed by Synology-made streaming apps on the iOS. On Android, the video app isn’t available and the music app is very buggy and lacks some very core functions.
.
Due to the ever increasing range of Android devices, that is at a pace faster than iOS devices, I feel there is a greater chance of an Android device becoming unsupported by an app than an iOS device. This means potentially one has to upgrade to a new Android device sooner than they can afford or wish to.
.
There is a greater range of apps, including games, on iOS. Example: I really would like a decent photo editing app, such as Snapseed, on my Android but can’t seem to find one that I like. Official Simplenotes app is also unavailable on Android.
I suspect the defragmentation of the Android ecosystem is, in part, responsible for the problems I mentioned and it’s something I don’t see Google can do much about anytime soon. Therefore, in my mind, the situation is likely to remain the same for a while which makes Android less appealing to me. Understandably, it is a complex and widespread issue that is inherent in the Android world.
Sorry about my boring post but I have two days left to refund my Nexus 4. Should I keep it or refund it?
Thanks guys

Sure, it's easy to develop a "polished" app with no bugs when your consumer audience is using a handful of IOS-based devices. The reason Android apps SEEM more buggy is that there are hundreds of different devices that use the Android OS. Problems are going to arise due to differences in hardware, but a good developer nails these problems and their app will evolve into a polished, bug-free work of art.

To answer your question, though, you should keep it. There's not a WHOLE lot going on with the nexus yet because of availability issues, but bugs will be squashed. Have patience. As more devs get their hands on it, it will get a lot better.
Refund it - that is one more device available for us on the play store ?

I won't tell you that you're a fan boy, or that you're stupid for thinking the way you do. It's clear.
Ask yourself this: are apps what you need to make your phone productive and useful?
I asked myself this question and found out, no. I use core apps like chrome, power amp, twitter and they're all well polished apps.
The freedom of the OS matters more to me than the apps, then again android apps are that bad.
Good luck
Return it. You want to just use the phone, as a phone.
ios is for you.

Here comes a list of photo apps I hope you will like. I have them all installed on my Note 2 and am often forced to use more than one of them to get the results i wish. This does not however bother me. Nor does it bother me that some cost over a whole $1 to buy.
PicsPlayPro + great for making basic adjustments - no sharpness or fine rotation
Pixlr - this is brand new and very promising. Has both fine rotation and sharpness - no historgram or curves like PicsPlayPro
TouchRetouch +fantastic at removing annoying objects or people from plain backgrounds - you must know it's limits
Afterfocus + the best I know of for getting that shallow portrait depth of field.
Aviary
SketchBookPro - this is more of an art program but you can import pictures add layers, text and paint to retouch. - you need the S-Pen
PicSayPro: lots of gimmicky filters and effect +++layer masks!!
The following are a collection that are both camera and filters or just cameras
Vignette
LittlePhoto
MagicHour
HDRPro ProHDR? +++very good for landscapes, interior architecture -don't try photo people
Picturesque + some amazing effects can be achieved with this app. Check out #picturesque on Instagram
Lastly Cymera needs to be mention for its 5 different cameras, its fun filters
Hope this helps. Welcome to android.
Oh, I almost forgot my favourite camera FV-5. Silly name great camera.
I would never get an Android tablet because of the lack of premium quality apps. I would want apps like Garage Band which Android has nothing remotely close to. Like on a PC the app selection for a tablet is the most important aspect of the device, and iOS crushes Android in that department.
I can live with the limited premium app selection for a phone because I dont use my phone as a computer or for doing serious tasks.

After some thoughts and insightful opinions from other android users - I have decided to keep the device. You are right, the availability is an issue at the moment and I believe android apps are only going to be come more polished as time pasts.

You've made some very good points and I seemed to have forgotten the key here is how I intend to use the device. All the core apps I use are all very polished on Android and, in fact, I like them more than on iOS because of all the available customization options. iOS at the moment has no jailbreak for many of their new devices and I foresee jailbreaking becoming more and more difficult. I enjoy the freedom on Android. Thanks for your advice :good:

WOW! THANK YOU! That has saved me so much time and they all look very intriguing! One of the positive things about Android is that there seems to always be a lite version to try out before one decides to upgrade to the full version. I may be wrong with what I said earlier about couldn't find a good photo editing app. Again, much appreciated for your recommendations :good:

I know what you mean - i got an ipad and that is what I use if there is an iOS app that I really want to try out. Its very hard to give up ios completely.
After reading the responses I got from this thread, I have decided not to return my N4. Here goes why:
None of the android apps is buggy to the extent that they are unusable. I suspect since JB has only just been released, bugs will be ironed out gradually. Android apps may not have all the functions as their iOS equivalent but the missing functions are not absolutely vital to me. There are usually some work around for the missing feature, such as use another app or just simply use a laptop. Many of the core apps I regularly use on my phone are polished on Android. In fact, I actually prefer the experience of these core apps on Android more than on iOS. The amount of tweaking I can do is simply too much to give up after having enjoyed the freedom of doing so. When I first unzipped a file on the N4, oh my, I was like “sweet!”.
I had forgotten that the key to my choice between iOS and Android was how I intended to use my phone. Having recognized this the choice between the two systems was an easy one - Android was clearly better (for me):
gmail and youtube apps were both better
video playback supported more format
reading experience was amazing thanks to the amazing screen
web browsing was wayyyyy smoother
apps were better integrated into each other
Looks like the N4 is here to stay
Thanks everyone for your input!

I am exactly the opposite. I can't really do anything on iPad since what I do need jailbreak at least. I need a Tab that could run Linux, or access one. I'm waiting for the day it comes to some Android Tablet and then buy 1. I now have an iPad that is sitting somewhere. Ever since I received my Nexus 4 I have never touched the iPad again. I don't have an Android tab to compare, but my friend's tab are pretty bland. It's pretty much a blown up version of the phone.
You can run Ubuntu on N7.

I would defiantly agree with you. iOS apps are more polished on the whole. While this isn't 100% true, I feel like many apps on iOS are more trustworthy and more likely to just work. Android on the other hand you have to filter through a ton of crap...
But then a polished Android app is just as functional as a polished iOS app. There is no reason why a well made app for iOS would be better than a well made Android app.

I think you feel this way because you come from the Apple ecosystem. As a quick and dirty Apple developer I find myself getting increasingly frustrated with our newer OS updates breaking things. Even pulling sysinfo seems to be different with every OS they release.
Google as well as their app developers are both well aware that most of the android community is still running on Gingerbread, so I don't think you'll see your Nexus 4 go out of style anytime soon. Keep in mind that you also have a Nexus device, and will in all likeliness be one of the first to taste Key Lime Pie whenever it's released.

You chose well. I had every iPhone from the original to the 4s and I do agree with you that apps seem more polished, but that's not everything. I've actually read articles where iOS apps crash more than android, but apple's way of programming will hold a still of the last image on the screen until the app restarts, all without the user knowing... Now, I have no proof of this, it's just something I read.
As for android, there's just more that can be done even without rooting. I was so tired of the jailbreak cat and mouse game with apple, but everything that I couldn't get on iOS, is all right there on android.
My last point in beating this dead horse I'd that this entire response was easily written by using Google's stock swiping keyboard! Nothing like that with apple....

I consider myself lucky to have a jail broken ipad 3. Jailbreak is declining and it's a pity.
