Glad to hear for you if it's true
I went to the Sprint store in Santa Monica and the sales guy told me LA coverage was gonna be widespread in 3 months... He sounded like a guy just trying to make another sale...
I was told they are coming to Tucson as well, not in phoenix.
They said they will do Tucson because is a smaller city it will take less to set up and they can claim AZ is covered.
We see how it goes

Awesome news guys!
The more 4g towers in America the better! Can't wait till 4g is the new "standard" and 3g is old news
The crew at my local Sprint store in the Phoenix area said the same thing a bit back (that they've heard rumors that it was coming soon). Glad to hear it's true.

Sprint and Clear appear to be making a big push right now. It's already reported that people have hit 4g at various places in LA
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk
I have heard the same rumors from various people and even talked to a rep from clearwire. I still have my doubts for Phoenix getting WiMax this year. The Tucson thing kinda makes sense and I wouldn't be surprised if it happens to be the first 4G city in AZ and possibly only 4G city in AZ this year.
Without sprint or clearwire making an official announcement for 4G in Phoenix or Tucson for that matter I have a hard time buying an EVO right now and paying the extra 10 bucks being that I live in Gilbert, a suburb of Phoenix.

yeah phoenix is a very large area to cover, they would be doing gilbert, tempe, scottsdale, phoenix, chandler, avondale.
One can hope.
i was told maybe january 2011. But being with sprint for 12 years i know that they usually know less than the forums do.
In houston clearwire partnered with airband and clear built additional towers. I would assume the same could be happening in phoenix
Keep in mind that Phoenix houses how many people? We have a pretty dense population as far as people per square mile goes. Makes sense to put 4G in the Phoenix metro area at least.
I came across this thread while researching when we might get 4G in Tucson. FWIW, during that search, I saw a December 09 job advertisement for a General Manager/Sales gig with Clearwire in Tucson...I hope that is a good sign that it's headed this way.
Please, please, please, pleeease have 4g in phoenix at least by years end (well, lets have have 4g in tempe, those guys in tucson don't deserve it )/

That's way too far north. You'll never get 4G up there...
hey guys
Let me put all the "rumors" to bed. I work for the Bechtel Corporation here in Glendale. We ARE building in Phoenix and ARE going to be up and running by year end. I'm not part of Clearwire, but the guys that I have drinks with on Fridays are.
If you have any serious questions, I'll see if I can ask for you.
Thanks

Meh, Phoenix. Land of "people who don't pay their mortgages." Worse yet, people who buy a cheaper house, then stop paying on their old house.
I think that city is on the decline now, especially with major employers moving out and outsourcing as much as possible. And the crime is getting bad - 50% of all drugs that enter the United States come through Phoenix.

What's the area of coverage going to be?

I was wondering if anyone was in the DC (specifically Fairfax, VA) area, and had 4g. I've seen a few posts with people claiming they're getting good coverage, but I wanted to make sure. I'm going to college there in the Fall, and it woulld sweet if they had it.
Thanks!
Depending on the specific area, 'tis true. They turned it on in the DC area last week.
I see you're in NOVA. Is there any 4G reaching out into Courthouse in Arlington at all?
Hopefully I'll be getting my EVO soon (shipping said 1-2 weeks to ship and then 2 day delivery) and then I can actually write my own experiences.

My boy just got his and works near Ballston mall which is not far off from Arlington Courthouse and he's got 4G there.
I talked to my local sprint store representative about when they are going to have a Samsung Epic demonstration model available. After some digging he found that they are having a pair of Epics shipped to them by the 26th and will have them up for demonstration by the 27th of August.
I just thought I would share this with anyone who is interested in the phone, but wants a hands on with it. I am not sure if other areas will be putting up the phone for demo the same day, but this is what i was told in the sacramento area.
If your in NYC, go to the AOL Time Warner center on the 3rd floor. They have the Samsung Experience exhibition where all the latest Samsung products are demonstrated. You can have full access to everything in the "store". There are no sales representatives and thus absolutely no sales pressure. Its like going to a convention center, except its right in the city. There are people who can answer questions about the devices.
I'm sure the Epic 4G as well as the other Galaxy S devices will be demonstrated/featured in that place. Its a really nice place to go to just hang out as they have fun contests and giveaways from time to time. Sometimes even live bands go their and perform. Really cool.

cool, im in sac too, i guess ill be hitting up the sprint store and checking out the epic. Only thing that sucks is i dont get my upgrade til oct 1st, ima try and ask the employees if i can upgrade early not sure if it will work though.
Very cool. I'm definitely interested but would like to see it first before I shell out the money. I'll have to call my local store

I don't think I honestly care enough to drive to a Sprint store just to play with it for a minute. Its less than 3 days away now.

They are, they're just not allowed to say. Cognitive is right though, we're putting out the demo models Monday night, after hours.
I apologize everyone, i realize that the demo models were not put out on the 27th, the sprint rep i spoke was misinformed and once he found out that they were going to get the Epic on the 26th he assumed they would set it up on the 27th. This was not the case, as i found out yesterday when i went to the store. Luckily, when i went in the sprint store manager was playing with one and said he wasn't supposed to show me the phone, but since i seemed enthusiastic he would anyway. I only toyed with it for about 5 minutes, but a few things i noticed were...
1) the keyboard is very comfortable and easy to type on, and in my opinion is about as good as the touch pro 2 in usability
2)the screen dwarfs in comparison to the evos
3)touchwiz is very smooth and had no lag in my use
4)the still pictures look fantastic as does the video recording
5)build quality and sturdiness seemed inferior to the evo, but then again the evo has no moving parts like the keyboard and we all know about the supposed glass separation, so idk
Anyway i know a lot of this has been covered, but these were just major things that i noticed.
On a final note, as much as i told the sprint manager i was interested in buying the Epic, he was very keen on trying to sell me the Evo right then and there. I wonder why?

I found the epic to be more comfortable in my hand, however this is not to say the evo was uncomfortable, just that i prefer the epic.
My only problem with the Epic's keyboard is muscle memory. Coming from a TP2, the shift button is above the FN button. On the Epic the FN button is above the shift button.
Over the course of a few days, it's resulted in more than a few odd typos.
Given time I'll get used to it. Otherwise initial impressions of the keyboard are good.

So I looked at sprints coverage map again, and noticed that same as before for me, they show I should have full bar 4G coverage on my 1 acre property. I don't get any 4G at all until I go down the street a couple hundred feet.
I called them tonight, finally pissed off about it, and the first guy told me tough sh!t, that coverage maps were a total guestimate and didn't matter. Finally ending up talking to this girl who actually helped me out. She told me I would need to go by a sprint repair shop, thankfully one is 2 mins down the road from where I work, and have them check it out, and if they say it is fine, or replace my phone, and I still cannot connect, they will see what can be done next.
Background.
At first they went to tell me about the 30 days and so forth. I pointed out how I broke a $300 ETF to move to sprint, and then paid another 200 for my phone, and another 120 for my bill, all within the first 30 days of start of service with sprint. I also pointed out that the moment I did that, I lost my unlimited data plan with AT&T.
So I have unrooted my phone, and I am sad cause my phone feels so lame running stock sense 2.2 when I had a awesome 2.3.2 CM7 and will be like that until I go by the sprint store tomorrow evening. So I am hoping they somehow make good on their end when I get back home, and still get no 4G coverage, just like the other 4 evos that have been at my house my friends have get no coverage.
anyone else have issues like this? I was really just ranting cause I want to either have 4G or a carrier that I actually get 4G with at my house, when they say I will.

well I ended up going way up sprint somehow. And eventually I talked to some manager who started cursing me out and calling me names and lying to my face. He said the only reason I have connection problems at my house was because I don't turn my phone off for extended periods of time during the day. lol... Needless to say I had his manager listen to that call and next thing I know I have no ETF, a sprint EVO 4G to sell, and an HTC thunderbolt that is so fast it isn't funny.

not where I am either, but I'm sayin' for the rest of the folks that aren't so lucky.
Clearwire is in trouble. They were considering skipping their debt payment this month, which can't mean anything good. They had a $237M debt (actually just an interest) payment due, and sprint gave them $1.6B. That's less than 7 months of interest payments, assuming the payment is a constant $237M each month, and not counting costs of running the company day to day. I have a feeling Sprint just set fire to $1.6B. I guess it's better than having the 4G service just shut off, before Sprint has a chance to get off the ground with their LTE network.
Sprint should have just built their own network, instead of partnering with companies that are damaged goods.
Edit: Most of the first paragraph was originally based on the payment being for both principal and interest. Since it's only for interest....clearwire is screwed. Say goodbye to wimax in a few months. I give it until April, and then clear files for bankruptcy, and their assets are sold off shortly thereafter.

so I log in to check my bill at sprint.com, wanted to browse as i am looking for another phone to play with.. LOl
it's been a year, got my deposit back! wahoot!
seeing a little credit in there is nice, I have to say form all the stories i have heard about sprint being on these boards for almost a year, I have had a pleasurable experience with them, the financing department is first class, had some billing issues with them and they were as pleasant as can be. I do feel their service can be better in their stores, as My trusty evo's charging port let go back in november, and i had some rough spots tryin to get sprint to help me, so i went to htc and they resolved my issue no problems, so in a nutshell i am a happy customer!
now, do i want a design4g, epic4g touch, or photon4g? LOL
Totally agree with you. I have had a very pleasant experience with Sprint as well. Had a couple small billing issues that were fixed very quickly and drop less calls now than with Verizon. I used Verizon for 9 years but the cost was getting out of control. So far over the last 20 months, I have saved $2256 by switching. Total win
Sprint is great for the price. Just wait til network vision rolls out and coverage increases.

Grats! I remember when I got my deposit back...was stoked to have 2 free months of service basically. As far as upgrading your phone I would hold off on that. I just recently purchased the EVO 4G because I really wasn't too impressed with the newer phones. Granted they are better than the EVO but just slightly which to me isn't worth either the upgrade credit or the extra cash. Wait for some more ICS phones and then upgrade....i'm betting Samsung and HTC will come out with something great.

Brad, I would wait until MWC. I am having the same debate, I am going to wait for my 2 years to officially upgrade but if I get the chance to try a different handset I will. My wife needs a replacement EVO but I am kind of hoping they wont have one and we will have to get something else... we will see. But HTC is going to be launching something BIG this year!
I'm waiting it out too. Galaxy Nexus, sure it has LTE but it is last year's technology. I have very high hopes for MWC and shall be revealed there.
Out of Design, Photon, or Epic Touch?
Design has basically no development community. Smaller screen, and single core just doesn't cut it for me.
Photon has Motoblur and it is a worldphone, if you're into that kind of thing. It has a small but quality development community, jokersax has put out some good stuff for them. Unlocking the bootloader borks 4G. You can relock to fix 4G, and you can't relock with custom kernels.
Epic Touch used to have Loss of Signal, which was an absolute pain. It is pretty much gone now. Took a while to get AOSP on it, but they have accomplished. They have the strongest development community out of the three. I think it is BML but I'm not sure. If it is, hopefully they will be able to convert it to MTD sometime in the near future.
OR wait
i can never wait for my upgrade i have about 4 months til my contract is up ... sadly i maybe switching to the evil empire (at&t) :/

Have you considered calling them and letting them know that you have no service at your house. I was having the same problem as I live in a small town in southern california and they sent me a free airave. Granted its not the best solution in the world but it will provide you with coverage in your home as long as you have high speed internet.
I've had a few minor ups and down with Sprint as far as billing went, but next to nil issues with repairs or phone service. I wish it was my first year again. I've been with Sprint for close to a decade now.
As far as a new phone goes, I'm with one of the previous posters. There's yet to been a phone released that has made me want to make the switch. Especially due to many of the awesome ROMS that been developed for our phones in the past year or so. In some cases, it's literally like having a new phone every few months. lol
