Is there any way in hell to make this happen? I love swype for typing out long texts and emails, but it sucks for most other things like entering web addresses, looking things up in epocrates, and no speech-to-text button. So, I'm asking if there's a way to only associate the swype keyboard with certain applications.
Nope, not currently.

I am wondering if anybody knows of a good Speech to Text Program I can use on my mogul. What I am looking to do is be able to reply to text messages or emails while driving. Using a bluetooth headset would be the best way, i just want to be able to touch reply and speak the text, the touch send and not have to type on the keyboard while driving. Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you for your responses in advance.

Jott is a pretty neat service, with the basic idea being that you can call a phone number, dictate a message, and have it sent wherever you want (SMS, email, blog, etc.):

I believe they are still using human transcribers, believe it or not, rather than speech-to-text software. I suppose the benefits & drawbacks of that are debatable. It doesn't quite nail your original request, in that it's not integrated into your phone (so you couldn't hit "reply" from there) -- so that may be a deal-breaker for you. But, it's free and probably worth a try. And they keep adding lots of new features, such as "Jott Links" to things like Google Calendar:

and going the other direction, with the text-to-speech functionality of "Jott Feeds":

(or even have your Gmail read to you if you like):

Hi,
I'm looking for an app that will parse the text and recognize phone numbers (in text messages, email, calendar, and web browsing) and be able to highlight that number and then be able to one click call.
Are there any existing apps?
that would be great. like the windows mobile smartphones without touchscreen do.
i would really appreciate something like that!
yes that would be great i've been looking for somethingnlike hat. it woyld cery useful
Guys,
Any way to make this a reality? Currently, although gv text is checked as default, it isn't fully. For example, when swiping in the tw contacts lists, or when using vlingo's "text" command, samsung's text app comes up.

I haven't found a way to get Vlingo to use Google Voice to text yet, but sliding on the contacts does support Google Voice. The very first time you slide left on a contact after installing Google Voice, it'll ask you which app you want to use, GV or the built in SMS. You can check "Use this action for default." and choose GV.
I want group text with GV.
I want MMS with GV.
I want contact history with GV.
Could have sworn tw contacts couldn't do gv text as default, but it can. So that leaves vlingo. Probably hard wired in the app.

So do a lot of GV users, but what we have is what it is for now. All we can hope is for future support. For people who really need those features, they just have to pay for their carrier's texting plan.

I think this too. Hopefully they will add support in a future update.
What's the quickest way of selecting a contact from the contact list by name, if I don't want to scroll through all 600 of my contacts to find them? I could flip open the hardware keyboard, but is there a way of popping up the soft keyboard so that I can type the first couple of letters of their name?
There are dialer apps where you can search via t9. Dialer One is one of them, and so is GO Contacts.

I tried the others and TouchPal Dialer worked and looked best for me.
If I'm on any of the homescreens, I just tap the search button and enter the first few letters of the contact. It also works when in the contacts list.
do you have HTC Sense on your phone? if you do, you can use the numbers that have the letters of the contact you want to search. for example if you want to search for adam, you press 2326 and it pulls up adam
If you have the Google search widget on your desktop you can tap the "g" and tap contacts to search from there using the soft keyboard.
I'm just venting here, but I actually find it quite ridiculous that the vanilla dialer on android does not have smart dialing. The vanilla dialer is useless.

Unless i'm missing something, honeycomb tablets are missing a few features that would make the overall android experience a bit better.
1. If I'm signed into Google Voice on both devices when I click on a phone number (in browser, maps, etc...) it should ask if I want to dial with Google Voice, then ring my phone. Much like the Google Voice extension for chrome does.
2. Both my devices are Android, both of them are Samsung's (charge and galaxy tab 10.1). There should be some kind of SMS push via bluetooth or something so I can send and respond to my text messages from the tablet.
3. Sharing of links should be simpler, yes there's instapaper, dropbox, etc.. but there should be a quick way to share links, files and apps and such in a simple quick manner. Kind of like what Palm showed off for the Touchpad and Pre.
The next two are off topic but really needs to be said...
4. The market really needs to differentiate between phone and tablet optimized apps.
5. Task management in Honeycomb really needs help. There should be a faster way to switch between open apps than the clunky "windows" button with the apps that are running on the side. Apple's task switching with gestures is a faster and overall more enjoyable experience. This is Android, we can do better...
1. Google voice uses your data connection ONLY to have google establish a cellular call between you and the recipient. Since your tab does not have a cellular antenna, it cannot do this. I use GrooveIP to make and receive calls from my tablet.
2. You can use your google voice account to receive and respond to text messages. I think there are other ways as well, but my phone only uses GV.
3. Yes, sharing links should be as easy as Chrome to phone, but able to send to any of your devices, from any.
4. Yes
5. I never was much of a fan of gestures, but I would like to be able to remove applications from the multi-task list.

Im not saying to be able to make calls from the tablet, I'm saying if you click a phone number google voice should prompt you to ring your phone, similar to the way google chrome does it when you have the voice extension installed.

I take it that means that you personally will be developing for Honeycomb to try and improve upon these short-comings?

If you take it that way your sorely mistaken.
You can take it as a person who loves technology and owns a device from every major mobile os speaking on major flaw in honeycomb.
Task management in honeycomb sucks and needs to be fixed.
no need for the hostility guys. Android is great in that we can add apps and mods to make the devices better. Let's keep this thread focused on how to improve the shortcomings the op pointed out.
