I don't know if this is worthy of a new thread or not, if you guys find it not to be then you can delete it. I just wanted to post this so that i can vent my anger out on Sprint and no one besides you guys at XDA would probably care. I am very upset with Sprint and all of their products that i have so far. I got into the smartphone scene with a palm and i had that for quite a while, things worked great on it. Then i made the switch to the HTC Diamond. I was excited for the phone until i got it. It had a huge battery problem, i would probably get 5 hours most on the phone, and it lagged severely. To me, that is a huge problem so if i were with Sprint and HTC i would have fixed that right away. But, alas sprint is not that kind of company, so they left it. Thanks to the developers, they fixed Sprint and HTCs problem.
I then switched to the HTC Hero, again i was very excited for this phone and i saved for quite a while to purchase it. But again, when i got it i was disappointed. The phone lagged more than i expected and again, there was a battery issue. HTC get the hint already, fix your battery scripting. So i did the most sensible thing, i rooted my phone and upgraded with developer roms because it seems developers care more than Sprint.
Now i sit here waiting for Android 2.1 which sprint promises that they will release. I hear so many dates, first one said it was suppose to be released on March 23 and now i hear April 9th. And to make matters even worse, they are now releasing 2 new phones to their lineup. I am excited for these new phones, the nexus one and the EVO, but what the heck sprint, fix your current problems!
I am very interested in the EVO, from what i read, it is suppose to have quite a few cool things. But, i am not going to let the appearance fool me, this phone seems so powerful that sprint isnt gonna be able to handle it and they will release some great looking phone with a ton of problems, and instead of fixing these problems, they'll probably just try to push another phone on us. The Evo says it will have an 8 megapixel camera, seems impressive but the Hero has a 5 megapixel camera, that honestly, is **** without some tweeking to it. So i think an 8 megapixel camera will probably be the same with no fix from sprint or htc. Next, they promise a great processor, this sounds good but to me it sounds like another phone with 5 hours of battery life. I may be wrong but so far htc's previous products are all the same in this field.
I may just ranting but i really needed to get this out, i still don't know why i stick with sprint and htc, i guess i am loyal and i have faith that one day they will listen to their customers and fix their stuff. I don't know if anyone else feels this way too but this is what i have noticed since i got onboard with htc and sprint.

haha thats great, thanks i need that, haha. if crying gets things fixed with these companies then i am there.
I would imagine that all smartphone get terrible battery life. They are basically pocket-sized computers. It's not just HTC's. They improved the Hero a ton with the US version compared to the Euro one. Maybe switching to a non-smartphone might be your option? I don't know. I can tell you that with 2.1, our Heroes will have better battery life once we get the update. Because these leaked ROMs already do. Anyways, I don't really think Sprint is the problem with the phone. They are just the carrier minus the few apps they install. Do you live in a spot that has good coverage from Sprint? Because I will tell you this...If you have bad coverage, you won't get good battery life. Maybe switching carriers would help. Just my opinion.

if you're not satisfied..then go get yourself an iPhone.....end of thread..
well one reason i was upset is with the diamond i had about 4 hours to 5 hours with the phone, sleep or active. I then learned about rooting the phone and i installed a rom that fixed that problem. so my guess was it was some type of scripting error that the companies just never got around to fixing. And i live in AZ, sprint and verizon have the best coverage, the rest suck out here so i wouldnt consider any of them.
What kind of battery problem are you having with the hero? I can easily get through the day on a charge most of the time.
And even when I can't, keeping a second usb cable at my office so I can plug in there every now and then isn't a big deal. I consider it more than a fair trade-off for being able to carry that much computing power in my pocket.
It wasn't all that many years ago that I owned a desktop computer that had a slower processor, less ram, less storage, crappier screen and MUCH slower internet access than what my hero has.
I really don't understand why so many people ***** about "only" one day of battery life. What's so freakin' inconvenient about having your phone plugged in while you sleep?
Hell, when I carried a Treo 650 I had to have my phone plus two spare batteries fully charged when I left the house in the morning if I expected to get through just to the end of the workday. Didn't really bother me, it's just the trade-off I had to make to have the capabilities that it gave me.
It's just basic physics. More processing power uses more electricity. More functionality means that processing power is being utilized even when you're not using the phone. That also costs electricity. Larger screen, you guessed it, needs more electricity. And yet people still demand that their phones be slim and sexy.
You want a phone that does all this cool ****? Well, then be prepared to plug it in every once in awhile. If they made these things with the ability to go 17 days between charges they'd have to be the size of a phone book to accomodate the battery.

No reason to be short, I am glad to hear others opinions on Sprint and HTC in general.
On another note, I could never be more satisfied with my phone, rom, battery life, stability, coverage, and rate plan.
Except Im switching to Evo. Lol!
This shows the value and worth of the developer forum. If it had not have been for the developer forums I would have stopped getting smartphones a long time ago.

Find me one that says "would you like CHEESE with that WHINE?" Lol
Btah
Im sorry experience is so horrible. I dont reccomend an iphone, however, perhaps live with it until Evo or N1? Im quite sure whatever phone you chose will have as many bad reports as good. Keep your chin up kid, this is Android!
well with the hero i had alright battery life, i would get 8 hours to 10 hours until i rooted and switched to the roms which get me a days worth and that is more than enough for me. And i am glad opinions can be shot down with a "purchase the iphone," seems like anyones solution to anything is an iphone

My friend, opinions can only be shot down if you let them. Dont feed those trolls, theyll evwntually go away.
Like I said, im sorry to hear your experience has been so bad, but I doubt youll find better.
Besides, the Hero is the hottest topic at any dinner table, with just the name alone.
"what kind of phone do you have?"
"oh, this old thing? this is the HERO!"

iphone isn't a bad device, it's popular for a reason. It just wasn't for me. I've generally had good experiences with my hero. Mostly because of xda and a lot of my own work on roms. Android really is an excellent operating platform.

Well, to be fair, it is what everything seems to get compared to.
In all honesty after having carried one for two years, I have to say it's a great phone for its target audience. It's a reasonably capable smartphone that "just works". For non-geeks who want a phone that does all the "cool stuff", I think it's a good fit.
For people like me and the others who seek out forums like this one, it's just about the most frustrating damn phone in the world, though. It sucks having all that processing power in your fingertips but not being able to utilize it fully because Apple has the iPhone ecosystem locked down so tight. Not to mention that if I wanted to write my own software for it, I had to go out and buy a Mac! I had my first basic Android app loaded and running on my hero the same night I brought it home.
As far as your frustration with Sprint and HTC being slow with updates.... Just throw a 2.1 rom from this forum on it and stop worrying. I'm running DamageControl on mine, and I can honestly say I'm not the least bit interested in the official 2.1 update from sprint. There's nothing interesting even rumored to be in it that I don't already have.
Thanks, trust me, i love the hero. And i love XDA, i enjoy coming on this website to find what cool new roms are out and testing them. I think that the EVO may be an even better dinner table discussion, i can picture it now, "hey, is that an HDMI cable input?" "Oh this old thing, yea it is" haha

Well first I am sure Sprint is trying to work with HTC to fix all the bugs in 2.1. Other phones like Motorola Droid do not come with the sense UI, so HTC needs to have time to incorporate that. I am sure the original date may have been March 23, but like everyone knows some deadlines cant be met. We are not even supposed to know it was to be released that day or April 9. Someone leaks this information and that causes all the problems. Most of the time they dont even know a release date until all the beta testing is done. Stop paying attention to the dates people post. Plus if Sprint released this with bugs everyone would complain. i know one time with the HTC Touch Pro sprint released a ROM early and had to recall it. I dont think they want to do that sort of thing again.
For battery life, get an extended battery. The Sprint Hero uses the same has the HTC TP2 battery and they have a 2000mah battery that is the same size as stock for like $10 and its 500mah more.
As for technology, once you buy the Evo, it will be outdated just like the Hero. Thats part of technology life. be happy if you get 6 month out of your device before there is a better replacement.

6 months?
I've had my hero for just over 2 weeks now, and in that time it's been officially announced that the N1 and EVO are on their way to Sprint.
I couldn't wait any longer, though. My wife and I have been doing without cell phones for awhile since we moved to a new town. I now live a 5 mile drive from even the slightest hint of an AT&T signal, not a good deal for our iPhones. I've been holding out to see what got announced this spring, but nobody was saying anything and impatience finally got the better of me and I decided the Hero would be "just fine". (Which worked out, because none of the announced phones will be on the shelf soon enough that I could have waited anyway.)

Official Sprint Evo 4G Commercial
Love the execution and idea behind the commercial. You made us wait, but it was worth it. Excellent job, Sprint!
nice! I like it! no splashing on any other carriers, just saying they have a first!
The idea is good, but once again, the average person (NOT COUNTING PEOPLE ON XDA DEVELOPERS!!!!)
Doesn't even know what 4G is, instead of showing the device for more than 2 seconds in the commercial, they are not appealing to the average consumer.
Their advertising is aimed at saying we are the first mobile company with 4G technology, instead of showing their devices to make the average consumer want them.
The iPhone commercials make you want them after seeing them
And now, Good for Motorola they have it down.
The droid is doing it too.
The Droid commercial talks about how fast it is, how many apps their are, in the commerical they show icons of hundreds of apps, they show you how it multitasks, and it shows you what droid does.
But sprint decided not to show off the 1 ghz processor or how fast it it, how large the screen is (compared to other phones) or in general, how fast 4G is, and all the apps you can get.
IMO Sprint's advertising sucks ass.
The pre's advertising from sprint's end sucked.
Think about your average person (remember someone not on phone forums) and think which device would they think is cool.
The iPhone that shows only the device, and all the cool things it does
The Droid, that shows all the apps available, and core features of the OS and the phone (touchscreen and physical KB)
And then the EVO, which shows brickmills, and other old stuff, and then the phone for 2 seconds
Now I know motorola did that with the Droid at first, but with the iPhone release coming up soon, Sprint is not in the same position as Motorola to advertise that way.
They need to show off how cool the DEVICE is ASAP. Before the iPhone and Apple's advertising kills the EVO
I no this is a long post, but Sprint needs to advertise better, because the more they advertise, the more people buy it, the more developers develop for it

More apps/games for us.

You have to imagine ... these are just 30 second spots. Yeah, Sprint could have used the 30 seconds to talk about all the features of the phone, the problem is ... there are several phones out that sound the same, on paper, as the Evo. You have to do your research before you really start to understand how different it is. If Sprint aired a commercial talking about: 4.3" LCD screen and 1GHz snapdragon processor and Android 2.1 ... a lot of people would simply say, "That sounds just like the HD2 or the Droid Incredible or the Nexus One ... what the hell is so special about THIS phone???". So by making the commercial as they did, Sprint managed to stir up interest in the phone to make people want to Google it and find out more about it. Then they'll really see why it's such an amazing phone.
If they don't show what the phone can do then its fail. They should be copying apples marketing strategy.

No, not at all.
Thats what the droid did.
In this commercial they are advertising Sprint's network, not the EVO. The Evo was showsn and mentioned for 2 seconds.
Again the Droid did that with the ships launching from the sky and people saying what the heck is that, and then saying the Droid in the writing on the screen.
But again, Sprint didn't leave that impression on people, you have to think about the average consumer.
The new iPhone is supposed to be announced 3 days after the EVO release.
Sprint doesn't have the time to advertise this way.
I understand what your saying, but with the iPhone coming so soon, it will be more popular and bigger.
Every non techie adult over 35 that I have encountered thinks my hero, or older touchscreen phones is the iPhone.
Thats how popular it is.
Sprint should have advertised like this a month ago, and then showed the cool features now or a week ago?
you know?

And I get what you're saying as well ... thing is, nobody will be able to topple Apple, regardless of how amazing the commercial is. Sprint could literally steal an Apple commercial and simply replace anything "Apple" with Sprint, and it would still fail against a real Apple product. Not because the Apple is "better" but because Apple has its loyal fanbase.
That was also my point, but which form of advertising is more effecient right now??
The droid's current approach
or
This one.
Nothing will kill or become more popular then the iPhone, but the EVO has potential to become a strong rival, and sell alot, but using this form of advertising less than a week away from the next iPhone's announcement will make them sell less phones.
I was at Best buy in december, my brother was getting his hero, and we were waiting for sprint to help us out with an update, for the phone.
Anyways I overheard and saw a 40 yr old woman approach one of the salesman and ask "my daughter told me about a network card, that lets me get internet wherever I am with one little plug"
She was referring to a mobile broadband card or device. He was kind and told her that Sprint, Verizon and AT&T all have them, Her response was which one is the best?
Then he explained about the data capa, meaning 5gb, 2gb, or however much each network had, and she had no idea what he was talking about.
The average consumers want the WOW factor in the 30 seconds they hold the phone, and during the 30 seconds on commercial time, that is why the iPhone kills, and now the Droid is starting to do that too.
I'll give you another example I was in t-mobile checking out the HD2, and some girl wanted to replace her G1 because "when you have contacts open, it shows the persons name and their number right under it" She obviously wanted to hide the number and just display the contacts.
The Point is the average consumers don't do 1/5th of the research people on here do, and with sprint advertising like this, the EVO sales will suffer.
The commercials should mention it's the first 4G phone, but that's not the ONLY thing it should mention! Most consumers aren't in 4G markets yet anyway. Talk about how beautiful the phone is or everything else it can do and how it runs Google's Android OS.
The fact of the matter is Sprint has never really been aggressive on marketing their phones however what they do spend their time and money on is product placement as well as sponsorships. How many public places do you see Sprints logo plastered over it; Movies, Nascar, Hell even on Gaming Consoles. As someone else stated they could list a bunch of features that the Evo has however realistically Verizon has already done that with their Droid commercials and no matter how much I or anyone else prefer the Evo to the Incredible, they are similar phones in specs and features. They could invest tons of money in a me too type commercial just to visually stimulate mindless consumers or they could do what they do best and make a subtle, simple commercial illustrating what does actually make the phone standout. The only other things I could say they could boast about in a commercial would be Qik video calls as well as the hotspot feature. Other than that everything else has been done already. And this is just their "First" as the title states, ad campaigns normally have a couple different commercials highlighting different areas of the product. And while I do agree the average consumers aren't as knowledgeable as most of the people on these forums, they know what 3G is so all they need to see is that 4G and they know 4 is bigger than 3 so it must be better. The rest is up to capturing their curiosity and their search for information regarding the phone. I personally like the commercial it was simple and continues Sprints emphasis on their 4G network.
I do not believe this was "just" a commercial for the EVO, yes it did mention it but this was a sprint network commercial as all of them are. We may see a true EVO commercial but im sure that will be after the release.
IMO they have done a great job making people see where sprint is trying to go, and from the recent numbers for sprint it seems to be working
Umm, that was underwhelming!
everybody knows what an iPhone can do and how to use it from their commercials. All I got out of this is it's the first 4g phone, so what. Just because it's 4g doesn't mean it's good at anything.
they plainly should have multiple commericals that ginder to everyone. its not like sprint doesn't have money for marketing although they did waste a ton of money on the palm pre (woops).
show someone in a tight spot and need to use the phone has a hotspot while doing a video conference with qik, show another commerical for a soccer mom entertaining her kids with a movie, show another commerical for the young crowd on the qik chat and how you can take a picture, upload it to myspace, facebook and send a text message within 10 secs and then re-tweet it...
for goodness sake, just get some advertising out there and stop sitting on your lazy bum. heck get HTC or google reps to show up in a few major cities and demo the phone and the 4g network. just do something that is equivalent to superness of this phone......
i have yet to recieve an email from sprint.com after signing up for updates on the evo... yet again lazyness
How many of us like to be first? First in line, first evo poster, first one with root, first in soccer league, first to skydive out of your buddies, first to get on a new roller coaster, and anything else you can think of.........
We all do, after all we are selfish people! (for the most part)
So I think they drove one point home with this commercial........ we are the FIRST to offer 4g and if you want that the Evo 4g is the way to go.
Now you can't tell me when you hear "first" it doesn't make you listen a little bit more?
EDIT: We are all commenting on a thread that was tittled "FIRST Evo 4g Commercial, note the word First brought you in.
How about this idea y'all.... It was the FIRST commercial. Perhaps???

"....The campaign, which will also include print, outdoor and digital ads, is centered on the idea of cellphone users wanting to be “first” to use the HTC Evo 4G and thereby benefit from the speed and other benefits of the new handset.
In the digital realm, the idea of being first will be played up with social media elements evocative of Foursquare, the location-based online service. Consumers in 4G markets will be able to playfully compete against each other to complete “4G first” tasks like being the first to upload a video clip using 4G or the first to send a Twitter message in 4G.
The campaign is indicative of the increasing focus on technology features and details by marketers. In some ways, the attention lavished on the technological aspects of products serves the same purpose to differentiate brands as the focus on “secret ingredients” like AT-7 (Dial soap) or Retsyn (Certs mints) in advertising for packaged goods during the 1950s and 1960s.
The Sprint campaign is meant to be “the payoff of what the 4G promise has been” in the previous ads, Mike Goff, vice president for corporate marketing at Sprint in Overland Park, Kan., said in an interview by phone on Wednesday.
“Now, the fact we’ve got the Evo 4G, the first 4G handset, means we are taking it to a new level,” he added...."

everyone apparently wants Michale Bay to direct spirnts commercials. I like how they are just simple commercials, they aren't trying go puff their chest out, or taking stabs at one anther. Its like name calling and bickering girls. I guarantee (for those of us who aren't on sprint and know nothing about 4g, At&t, and Verizon, and Tmob will be getting this question in the near future. "when are you guys getting 4G" from their costumers.
it's kind of funny someone mentioned sprint should follow apple's advertisting strategy and show the product/features more, considering one of apple's first and one of the most influencial/groundbreaking commercials EVER (the 1984 commercial) doesn't even show the product AT ALL.
the commercial is intriguing because it shows a bunch of technological advances everyone can relate to, and implying the evo is the next in the line of all these familiar devices makes people who might not even know what 4g is ask their friends. i'm not saying this commercial is anywhere near the level of the famous apple ad, but i think it's really good for the average person.
Terrible....
i got a feeling t-mobile and htc aren't that serious about this phone. but since im still withing my 14 day, im gonna cancel my 2year contract, dust off my trusty g1 and go pre-paid while i wait and see how this goes. on a sidenote. i think its sad that t-mobile, who brought out the first android phone that started the whole frenzy of bringing iphone and RIM to their knees does not embrace their android devices. especially since they brought out a successor, it was just another phone to them i guess. i mean in comparison to apples iphone and att, and motorolas droid line-up and verizon, sprint and their evo. t-mobile and..... and.... wtf???

We're just messing with you. If you're really unsatisfied with the G2 and seeing how you really like the other phones with other carriers why not get an HD2? Off-contract of course through craigslist. You can put just about any build into it. They're dirt cheap, like $200. Until t-mobile releases more to your liking.
LOL! Nice.

No way in anyway was the G1 junk. That phone paved the road for Android, Rooting, and everything else. I still love the G1.
G2 is by far the best phone out for android. My personal opinion is it craps on the vibrant which is its only close competitor. As far as the g1.... only reason id see you going back is if your the type of person who loves to flash roms constantly... the g2 stock is just as good as roms I've loaded. Its very tolerable to me and I usually hate stock android. But soon devs will have perm root (gl guys!) and we will be able to get our roms back all in due time. Could you imagine the g2 with custom firmware? This thing is a beast on stock froyo.... so go figure.

well anything would have been rough being on the ground floor for android and Abd like that, this is true, but, that was some jacked up hardware, hinges, trackball, and keybboard, u gotta admit. Felt like Shat in your hand
I sold my rooted (and only rooted, nothing else) G1 to some idiot I work with in the army for 150 bucks.... last week. Oh, I hooked him up with some badass stock apps too like amazon mp3. And a high end bodyglove hard case that tmobile had on sale for 1.99.

I still like my G1, but now my son is enjoying it with CM 6.1
I'm not sure why so many are frustrated with the G2. I'm really loving it!
To each their own. I was happy to have been part of Android since it's beginning. But Verizon really marketed the Android phone, which would save T-Mobile a lot of marketing expenses to help familiarize people with the brand. Still, T-Mobile needs more advertising for this phone and not those dumb ads aimed at Moms.
I feel insulted.
T-Mobile should have reclaimed the G2 as a successer to the orignal with better hardware (dual core, and FF camera) and features to solidify their place as the Android King, because Verizon is stealing it.
Even though I think Android will peak by the next 2 iterations, it's downhill from there. If T-Mobile doesn't make it's position known as the king of the OS, then it's going to be downhill for them.
Next iteration of phone MUST implement the dual core processsor and more features to make this a top of the line phone. I don't want a phone that runs slower (stock G2) than an already released phone like the Galaxy S.
Step it up T-Mobile, this is my warning to you if you want to stay alive after Q1 FY11. Operations over there must be changing their target audience to Moms. Not good my friend T-Mobile... not good. Unfortunately their smartphone audience that is keeping them afloat are Android lovers and devs and the ability for us to grandfather data plans.
Be the first to release the dual core processor phone, with a projector, and front facing camera. Be the first!!! Be the first to come out with something spectaculary new, and you wont need to worry about marketing as much.
Then you can let Verizon market it for you by releasing a phone of their own with similar features. Once they set their prices, with your limited budget, you will advertise your phone with those features for less money.
Then you'll be all set. Thanks T-Mo and thanks OP for letting me ramble in your thread.
I loved the G1... the hinges made it pretty awesome and unique in my opinion. The keyboard was also pretty awesome... I go through hundreds of SMS a day and it made is so comfortable.
Still getting used to the G2... I like it so far except for the lack of FFC and weak hinges but hey what can I do about that.

I really like most Android Phones but disagree the G2 is the best Android Phone. I just dropped VZW for T-Mobile. My Droid X was just as nice if not better than the G2. I picked up the HD2 but now miss Android. So I am thinking about doing the G2 or MT 4G.
In the end he has his opinion but when it comes to prepaid the 3G coverage drops to a smaller area in my area.
As for the G1 I wasn't a big fan of the phone and the G2 is a far superior look and operating phone.
I like my EVO very much, best device that I had and last me more then any other phone in the market(besides iPhone) and there is one thing the bugs the hell out of me tho and is fragmentation, specially this week, we got another EVO, epic and a shift 4G(all good phones btw) in our family but since I rooted mine and I was running cm7 and the stock Evo has sense so I forgot how different they are when you use them, trying to explain something was a pain in the butt so I have to flash a sense rom to give them the right direction(person the got the EVO came from blackberry and he was lost of what to do) , well after that I'm at work and someone had a mytouch (original) and still diference , the worse part is the moto, Sammy and HTC all use different layout in buttons! Why don't they have a set up one for all Google devices? ?? I mean the EVO makes more sense to me but for my friend thinks the epic does, this is something the Google should have control from the beggining, like I said I love Android but some stuff needs to changed
I have an iPhone3GS as well and if a iPhone 4 user asked me about settings or set ups is the same but if someone ask me how to use the mail app in HTC EVO with sense is different from the email app he aosp roms come with, I know how to do it no problem for me but a lot new comers are having problem with this kind of problems . I help that much the I can
And lets no talk about updates to new version cause that's another crazy topic, man the hero got 2.1 after almost 6 months and that was it, the epic (power phone) got official froyo 6 months later, and all those little android devices lmade by LG, Samsung, etc will probably never get froyo or gingerbread .
Anyways Gizmodo just published this article about Android fragmentation and it looks like finally Google will work on it

Man I hope so.
I have no problems with putting a "skin" over top of android, but, it HAS to be a limit. This is a prefect way for Google to slap back at the companies that are or are getting ready to lock their phones down (HTC! ><).
It is definitely getting out of hand and needs to be put in check for the sake of Android.

The skin is all good but like tethering it should be free for all froyo and all carriers block it, 4G tethering is nice when it works but I do t use it enough to pay so that's one of the reason I rooted

I don't really see your argument. Yeah fragmentation sucks, but to the average Joe it doesn't mattter. The example you used of your rooted EVO was terrible. Your EVO, had it not been modified by you would look and be exactly the same as your friends brand new EVO.
The majority of people don't even know what version of Android their phone is running. They don't even know there is a new version available until their phone tells them its time to update.
Androids fragmentation has improved greatly with the release of froyo. It becomes a double edged sword when it comes to OEMs having the ability to modify Android. It gives us consumers choice, at the expense of receiving slower updates. The problem is people need to vote with their wallets if they want change. People are voting with their wallets because they are buying phones with motoblur, sense, and touchwiz.

People are buying phones with motoblur, sense and touchwiz because for the majority.. that's all there is.
Where are the phones with Vanilla Android? Not everyone has access to a Nexus S or even knows what the difference is. That is definitely why Google needs to step in and show what Android really is.
Skins/UI's are fine and choice is always great. It just needs to be done in a cleaner, less bloated way. I really hope google reins it in a little bit..

normally, I would agree with this statement, except this:
MOST people don't choose to go to a carrier because of a phone (or skin on said phone), they already have a carrier they have a relationship with, and get whatever phone the rep says is "the best thing right now", and "hey, it's an android!", without knowing what that really means.
then they often find that the phone they purchased has very little in common with their friends android, diminishing the inclusiveness a shared brand should have. (think iphone) among other things mentioned previously like support, updates, etc.

Yeah well is just diferrent stuff Guys be open minded on what people wants, I know most here like to work for our phone and I say this cause we flash, modify, and do all sort of crazy stuff and I like it but no everyone is like that some people want something the works for them, a smartphone should help you to make your life easier and replace multiple devices, books and sometimes aagendas and to get this experience right Google needs to step up and make it happen(gingerbread got the copy and paste updated and works better then froyo or eclair) , HTC is clearly the first one going the right direction with sense and then everybody thought they have something better like motoblur and touchwiz and just makes a lot difference for the user using it , Google needs to drive they experience and should make sure manufactures updates their devices the way everyone has the great experience that we (xda users do)

This is just a random banter, but I have to say that of all smartphones I've used or tinkered with, this one to me has had the most love. I can't help but notice how all the awesome and devoted devs here on XDA are still porting and creating ROMs for this amazing phone. The EVO is what got me into Android and modifying ROMs of my own. Now that the EVO has been discontinued, let us take a moment to reflect on its majestic legacy, and see it off the way it deserves. Some key moments I remember are:
-When I saw the commercial for the EVO and it blew my mind.
-Waiting three weeks for mine to come in stock.
-When I finally bought it: August 8, 2010.
-When I learned about rooting and nervously tried it for myself.
-When I found XDA, with a whole section devoted to the EVO.
-When I tried the unlocked hotspot for the first time.
-When I accepted an OTA and lost root, not knowing what I just did.
-Waiting impatiently for 4.24 to gain root.
-Learning 4.24 had finally gained root, and leaving work early so I could root my EVO.
These are just a few moments, but there are many more. I know this post probably sounds crazy, but I know there are other people who feel this way too. If so, please feel free to share your experiences with "The People's Smartphone".
I would agree, I've had mine for over a year. Sure I want a new phone but nothing out has made me want to get rid of my evo yet.
We're comin from a pure power source.
Ahhh, to reminisce..
The EVO was my very first smartphone. I came from a LG Rumor. My EVO is still my daily driver. I got mine on Aug. 3rd 2010, just a couple months after its release. I got into the root and mod scene a few months after that.
The EVO is definately a historical device. It was the first for so many things. Most notibly for me was it was the first iPhone killer. The first real offering for iDevice haters like myself.
I have a lot of good memories with my EVO. It'll remain my current device until my contract is fullfilled. Reason being so I can carrier unlock it and continue to use it for whatever I want thereafter. Even without service it still makes a great mini tablet on wifi lol. I'll keep my EVO and use it for as long as it runs. The day it dies will be a sad day; however I still wont get rid of it lol. It'll make a snazzy paperweight! Maybe I'll make a shrine for it haha -shrugs-
I've babied my EVO so much that it still looks like it did the day it came out of the box. Not a scratch or ding on it. Still looks and performs new!

+1 to all of that. +1000 for the EVO being the 1st iPhone killer!
Wife and I decided to fire AT&T, sold both of our iphone 3s, got our Evo 4Gs and never looked back. +1 to all the comments so far. Sent a lot of data through this bad boy via 3G, Wifi and sdcard.. now have 5 Roms loaded on it at once and switch with a single reboot.. simply amazing.
It will be a sad day when they hang on our Christmas tree though.
I both mine in September 2010 , from that time I burn two of them (sprint sponsored) . This is my the third one.

You know something else I love about this phone.. even tho it's EOL and no longer in production; it is still technologically superior to 95% of the current offerings available.
Yes it has a single-core processor, and has half the RAM and ROM space available compared to many top-notch phones today. Take for instance tho the screen size and resolution, and it's 8MP camera. Most current phones can't beat it.
The EVO is aging, but it can still hold it's own. And of the EVO family of devices, it's second to only the 3D when it comes to performance and features in my opinion.
There's just so much to rave about when it comes to our beloved classic EVOs. It really set the standard for top-of-the-line smartphones, and it set that standard very high. HTC forever has a fan in me.
So what is a 10 month old EVO actually worth today? Its an 8-9 on a scale of 1-10.
I gotta give props to the OG. I had mine for almost a year and gave it to my daughter when I got my 3D. She rocks it and absolutely loves it to death. It is still beast.

And here's one I took from over at pdadb.net's comparer. 3D stats on left, 4G on right.
My Evo
I rather enjoy my Evo as well. Only reason i'm considering upgrading is to get dual core action. There are some good dev's making roms and stuff for this phone still too. I think this phone is going to get plenty of action for a long time
absolutely the "People's Smartphone"..for a long time during the Windows Mobile days I would switch phones endlessly. The Evo is the only phone to hold my attention for so long. For me, it's not just the device. It's the community. The tweaking. The endless hours of fun on the couch just goofing around with this thing. It's a cheap hobby. Major props to all the fantastic Devs that keep this thing alive and major props to the rest of us that keep this community one of the most active on XDA.
I agree... I had the Hero and I thought that HTC couldn't build a phone, then I got the Evo. It is a stable and powerful phone still. It will be interesting to see what comes up next. They will have to top the Evo, which will be pretty sweet phone.

I wouldn't say they failed, it's just a part of business. Consumers en masse want the "next best thing" you know how it goes. So you gotta fill business contracts, get people buying the new stuff, new stuff equals new accessories, new contracts etc etc.
It's a beast of a phone and can still hang with lots of devices today, it's just gotten a little long in the tooth. I honestly think after my daughter runs through my old Evo, my son will get it. I'm sure it will still be a winner in a year or two.Natural progression my man, it is what it is.
