Los Angeles 4G Speed Test :-) - EVO 4G General

Well, I can't post images in sites so I cant post the badge - but just did a speed test at 6 mbps down 1.3 upload - so I just wanted to brag a bit! I'm over by the beverly center waiting for a client of mine to get to his house...
Beautiful!
EDIT:
Okay so I just re-speed tested and the results were exciting
8.40 Down
1.0 Upload!
YAYYYY Exciting.

Woah Woah Woah LA has 4G already? Maybe I gotta drive up this weekend.

i want 4g

It's not a full roll-out it looks like they are testing the network out and probably doing a kind of beta test... it's only in certain areas... so far I have received signals in:
Downtown LA (1st and Alameda) - where I used to live... that was nice
West LA - Pico & 405 FWY
Beverly Center - Right now I'm parked about half mile from beverly center and I get one bar of 4g service w/ 6 mbps internet speeds - I'm posting this from it inside of my car actually while streaming music from grooveshark.com, chatting on facebook, and on skype
I've heard that Beverly Hills has service - but I haven't found it and almost all my clients live there - so I think that's a rumor (other then by the beverly center I guess... but that's technically West Hollywood area)
Hopefully this means their full roll-out will be in the coming month or two though! I see clearwire towers EVERYWHERE now-a-days! They are quite easy to spot.

Really? What do they look like?
A co-worker was just telling me that he got 4G with his Overdrive in LA, and also in Modesto and Sacramento. I gotta drive up to test my EVO too haha.

I guess I'm a little salty but being that you were the only one on the network, I guess you would get speeds that quick. Once everybody jumps on it, I imagine it won't be so good....
Good Luck tho...
filtfh...flarn...filth...
- Bill Cosby cursing...

Interestingly enough... after surfing the web, streaming music, amongst other things. 15-20 into it the 4g mysteriously dissapeared... haha they probably realized it was public and shut it down.

LA 4g
So I picked up the EVO June 4th and had 4g up until 10 min ago.
I work at 1st and Hope and picked up one bar of 4g but speed tests always hover at 2.2Mbps down and .98Mbps Up. I was teathered to my Laptop because a co-worker wanted to stream the world cup concert but 500Mb later and i get disconnected. Not sure if they blocked me (or solar flare haha) under 4g status it keeps changing the status between "searching" and "connecting to sprint" but never establishes. Restarted the phone and all. I have internet but only on "3g"
wierd

Well either that or since it's not officially live, the network will probably be unstable until it is. They are free to take it down, power down equipment, reboot, update, do whatever while it's getting deployed.
I would think they also might want to prevent others from using it from some tests, it all depends on what the policy is.
Hopefully it will come back up soon

Oh, I'm glad it's not just me then. Right now I just tried to connect here in Downtown and it does not connect.

They probably took the network down city-wide... I bet they are getting ready for a city-wide release... testing reboots, etc. You can probably expect it gets more and more intermittent as they will be testing how long their network takes to reboot, etc.

O_O Awesome!

Sprint WiMax 4G Live in St. Louis 05/27/2010!!

Just for fun I thought I'd try out the 4G radio on the EVO while here in St. Louis.
Turns out, it's live!!
Here are some screen shots to prove it!
Had to resize images to fit upload requirements here.

2.1 mbs down?
if so im not impressed... at all
I'm on the edge of the city, and inside, and they haven't announced the launch yet, so who knows how fast it will go. I'll take a drive this afternoon and see if I can get a better signal.

Wow, that's awesome news! I live in St. Louis (Southwest Garden area) and I'm getting the Evo next week, but I was hoping I wouldn't have to wait too long before getting 4G. I figured it'd probably be later summer before I'd have it, but if your phone is correct, sounds like they've already started installing it. Hopefully it's just the beginning and the signal will continue to get better.
My only concern, I've read somewhere that some Radio Shacks are setting up WiMax hotspots. Maybe there's a Radio Shack nearby that you're getting the signal from? Just a thought, could be wrong. It'll be interesting to see what happens when you venture out in the city to see if you continue to get the 4G signal and if it improves or gets worse.
Thanks for the update! Please keep us posted!

Wow, I wasn't expecting STL to get 4G any time soon. I am so excited that you found this out. I am getting my phone on the 4th, and can't wait to test the speeds. I am in the southwest part of STL, in the boones. So I don't know how well it will work for me.

For some reason I'm getting better speeds on 4G via WiFi hotspot on my Win7 PC. Could be an issue with the speedtest.net app for android or a hardware issue or something.
Anyhow, this has been typical of tests from my PC via 4G hotspot.
4.5mbps
Why oh why must they wait til the 4th to release this phone. All along though, I had a feeling that 4g would be going by yht time the phone was released.
I bet Sprint just started working on it, so it might not be for a while until it's fully live, but it's still exciting that it sounds like it works to an extent. Does the 4G seem much faster than the 3G? Have you by chance tried it near South Kingshighway/Vandeventer/Southwest? or near the Botanical Gardens?
Has anyone tested the Metro East area? Fairview Heights/O'Fallon Area?
hmmmm interesting... I am in STL close downtown and the last couple of days my Hero have seemed much quicker with data transfers. I have no idea if this has anything to do with it but WOW, cool, thanks for the news. I did not expect to hear this at all. I figured it would be some lame excuse why it wasnt hear at the end of June.

From what I have been told, radioshacks just have repeaters in them. They basically just take a weak signal and boost it so it reaches more of the city.
So, WE DO HAVE 4G!!!
God, I can't wait till the 4th, and with the ability to use the sprint hot spot feature for free for a bit, ill be pushing large amounts of data through their network.

I'm interested in that, too, and how 4G will reach a bit farther south, like Belleville.
I'm guessing 4G will blanket the area just fine, but it would be nice to have some actual tests!
4G FULL service near the new River City Casino. Clocked about 3.3Mbps
Detected 4G (low signal) on I-64E at about Hwy 157 in Illinois, but then it dropped and cannot get a signal any further east.
I'm getting 4g signal in my home in Dogtown. That said, speeds aren't much better than the current 3g which is lightning fast on the Evo. I'm getting > 2mbps on it.

*************EDIT************
Sorry for misspeaking for the masses when saying chicagoland area, although my observations for SOME of the area seems to be right, according to this thread it may not be entirely accurate for the entire area. However NWI - Portage and surround areas to the west seem to get this good signal. Sorry guys =(

Hey guys! I can hardly contain myself. Since launch day I was plagued with HORRIBLE cell reception and had the 3g/edge switching issue. New radios always seemed to help little by little as they were rolled out, and eventually I just gave up and went to WiFi at home all the time. Dropped calls and such happened frequently.
The cell signal for the past 3 weeks-ish has been weird and flaky. I've never since January have been able to get more than 800kbs and that was full bars. More times than not it was 300-400kbs.
As of this week.... 1700kbs!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jesus Christ this thing flies now. I've been missing out on a lot. THANK YOU TMOBILE!
If anyone else has some awesome success stories with the N1, post in this thread =)
congrats, hope they upgrade the Las Vegas area soon.

What part of town are you in? I never had any problems with reception in Lincoln Park, through max download speed was around 800 kilobits.
Edit: Just saw that you said Chicagoland..never mind.

Talcott and Harlem pushing 1300kb myself
I wonder how long it will be before it hits down here in Bloomington/Normal
Although were not that big, we have a lot down here. Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan University, State Farm Headquarters, Country Companies, Nestle, Mitsubishi Motors

I was in Roger's Park and my downstream was 800kbps~. I recently moved to River West, (like Grand/Halstead), and my speed was around 2.7mbps. My upstream is the same as before 350kbps~.
In westside Los Angeles, getting around 2.8mbps down. It's damn nice that TMO is stepping it up.
Just checked, I'm getting ~50KB/s down up. Slower than before.
I'm in the western suburbs.
In the Oak Lawn/Alsip area and speeds are the same as always 800kbps is peak but usually slower.
Well I live in Portage area and took the SS in the other day and was fairly consistent on the way. Perhaps I should get this edited. Sorry guys, I could of sworn it was rolled out for the rest of ya.
As for the complaints and such about low speed/choppy speeds. Its night and day. I had it and now I don't, ever. So I can see how big of an ordeal it would have been to straighten out this signal issue from tmobile-google as its not consistent
Where are you in Chicagoland area? I don't notice a difference. I frequent Chicago/Buffalo Grove/Highland Park areas.

4G and the Laker Parade

So yesterday I went to the Laker parade. While I was there I was trying to use my 3G connection and it was horrible! It pretty much didn't work which doesn't surprise me because of how many people were there. Then I realized that I had read something about 4G being available in downtown LA. I turned on the 4G connection and BAM I got it! Then I tried doing some internet stuff to see how fast it was and it was very fast and smooth! I love how we have the only 4G phone so I had no problem doing online stuff while I'm sure that everyone else there that did not have our phone was screwed! Love this phone! I also did a speed test and got 3.6 down and 1.0 up. And that's the with the unofficial 4G there! Can't wait for official!
Sweeet!! Where were you?
I was about 15-20 ft away from the fence at the beginning of it.
I wasn't there... what streets were you on? Also how strong was the signal?
Actually I started a custom Google Maps to map out the 4G findings in LA...

I was right next to the Staples Center and honestly don't know what street I was on. The signal seemed to be 1 and sometimes 2 bars. But considering that it's not officially out yet I'm not complaining. I was getting 3.6/1.0 speeds.
Sweeeet, this is all good news
I was in LA last week for E3 (at the Convention Center/Staples Center), and 4G was humming away live and well! I live in Orange County though, so I hope it makes it's way further south sooner than later.
I was out on the 10 freeway today in Los Angeles, the best I was able to get was 3.3up
Hopefully be much faster after final release...

WTF!!! Calling anyone in CT that can connect to 4G

So today I was trying to kill my battery after wiping all data to rebuild the battery stats and randomly turned on 4G to help kill the battery, but found that it connected to Clearwire, rather than Sprint. Now I will have to drive around and try and locate the broadcast point.
I live in Wolcott, CT and small town in New Haven County that boarders Hartford County, next to Waterbury. This was a fluke that I turned on 4G but was surprised to see that it connected.
My speeds are crap but have gotten it up to 6mbps down, nothing better than 3G upload speeds though ~0.33mbps up.
Here are some pictures to show.
I live in stamford, no luck with 4g here.

Sprint and Clearwire
I thought Sprint used Clearwire's WiMax network. (i.e. Sprint 4G is really a rebranded Clearwire WiMax) Not to mention Sprint owns the majority interest in Clearwire.
In Orange County California I came across a small pocket of 4G coverage. The weak signal only allowed about 1.65 Mbs down and 0.48 up which is far below the 4G spec but better than the usual 3G (altho also below the 3G spec).

Clearwire is Sprint's 4G provider. I have just never seen Clearwire listed as the ISP while in labeled 4G areas thats all...
What I find funny is Clearwire does not list any active broadcast location in CT, so I wonder why I am picking anything up...
A quick google finds that Clearwire is hiring in the Hartford, CT area. Everyone from customer support to RF Engineers. Perhaps you were close to their Hartford location.

I will track down the broadcast point. There are a couple large cell towers in my area that I will start with.
I found the broadcast point, it was were I thought it would be, top of route 69. Was getting almost 11mbps down and around 1.5mbps up. Kind of weird that there is 4G in this area now.
I had 1 bar in new haven not to long ago and got a little over 4 mbps down and about 1 mbps up.
4G Waterbury CT
Hello everyone. Found this post searching around and figured I would join this great forum.
I found out earlier today that 4g service was started up in Waterbury. I saw that the OP is in wolcott. Flip on ur 4G and give it a minute to set up.
With speedtest.net Im getting an average of 9.25 down and 1.75 up.
The internet flies on this phone at those speeds. Web pages load in a second or so compared to 10 secs on 3g.
Finally we get our 10 bucks out of the deal, lol.
4g is all over newhaven and hartford
It's also available in stamford, ct - there is a tower on the TOP of the new Trump building.
Just google "4g stamford" or "4g your town here"
download the sensorly app on your phone and you can see real time reports of it down to road level.
You have to zoom in on this link before it gets accurate
http://www.sensorly.com/Map/4G/USA/Sprint/wimax-sp
nobody tried sensorly?
That sensorly map seems to be inaccurate for me at my current location, it says I should have 4g coverage but I do not. Back at home in seattle though I do have 4g almost everywhere so I am used to having it.
Edit: I stand corrected by the fact that if you download the app and zoom in really close (better then you can on the website) it shows I do not have coverage.

I get 4G throughout E.Hartford and Manchester. None in Glastonbury though. I get 5-8 Down in E.Ha.

Reason for the San Francisco 4G Delays

I live in Berkeley, and I know for a fact that tower wouldn't serve me. I have yet to hear anything about service in the East Bay. Anyone have a clue?

that sucks! people there complain about anything even if its for their benefit! if they dont want it to be there, maybe clearwire should find another place to put their antennas on! i want my 4G here in sf...
Well I'm out in the flatlands of the East bay in Concord, and the closest 4G is the small downtown area of Nut Creek. Sprint, hook us up!!
This is frustrating as **** for those of us who have been waiting, and waiting for these assholes to get their **** together. Yeah, we know San Francisco has a crazy permit and building process - but this is ridiculous. What about San Mateo County? We're total 4G-less while Santa Clara County is almost all the way lit up.
Embarrassing.

I've left my radio on to search since I got the phone, and only one phantom hit until today.
It's dropped a couple times now, but it keeps coming back. Almost an hour of 4g at this location.

Not that impressed with the speed tests so far, but the upload is crazy fast...for a cell phone.

Not much better than the 3g, really.

Well...it seems to have gotten better. It's still access going about the same as the 3g... And tethering is SLOW. I'd say slower than with 3g, which is weird, but other people have reported the danger thing... I just looked.
So far, I'm not impressed. The icon looks cool, but I had better performance with 3g on average.
Maybe it's dialed down for testing before an official release?
My girlfriend said she got a 4G signal today in the FiDi, near 2nd and Mission. Think I might switch to a Sense ROM for a few days...

That's pretty good! I am going to be driving there in a bit, might try it out.
What part of Fremont have you been getting 4G? I've been getting a signal in Union City but only during the day strangely.
