I've been using rustom ROM's since the first one came out.
Unfortunately in some ROM-topics people are talking about JIT.
Can please somebody explain what JIT means, what would be the added value of it and what it actually does?
Thanks in advance!
podb
JIT on Wikipedia... go have a look... it won't bite you...
just-in-time compilation (JIT), also known as dynamic translation, is a technique for improving the runtime performance .. basically it will speed up your mobile .. for more information Wiki
Thanks for the understandable explanation!
I tried to find more info on JIT but since I had no clue what it was about, I didn't know the explanation was the one I was looking for ...
So, thanks again!
so how do you install it/enable it? is it built into roms?

You install it on top of a ROM, usually provided by the maker or someone else who made a package.
it's a little update.zip that replaces a few files.
So would it be on a "3 Branded" Hero? - if not is it as simple as loading a file?
Geesss nuts'n'bolts I find Win Mo soooo mush easier

i think i read somewhere that you got 4.8 linpack using the beta version?

I am getting that kind of score on Super2 just now.
I'll get someone else to test it before release though
I'll test it. Pm me. Xxx
how come he's getting 4.5+ and your getting 3.0 (in your signature, or please update it!)??
I'm not using the jit yet...
So, any difference in real life? I didn't notice any speed improvement at all (as commented on VillainROM forum)
i have started using jit and i am now getting a much higher linpack score.
i havent noticed much of a difference in the speed, but it is smoother and more responsive.
however jit does cause some problems, making the phone a little jumpy for example, and a little less stable. worth it though imho.

Hi Guys,
I have a G1, got it from the States on eBay when they 1st come out. It was unlocked and had Cyan on it.
I have been doing updates all along and it just seems to be getting slower and slower and slower, kind of like a computer over time.
I neve installed Apps to SD or what ever it is called. I did install Taskiller but it always shows like 25 to 27 free ... so why is it so slow and what can I do to speed it up?
Thanks
Mike
Probably degrading.
Three things that should get you back to optimal speed:
1. Clear ALL caches. Do it manually through app manager in settings or get one of the apps that does it (I recommend CacheMate).
2. Clear your Dalvik Cache.
3. If those two don't help, it may be time to wipe fully and start with a fresh install of the ROM.
What is the Dalvik Cache?
just do a fresh wipe and re-install everything
Automatic task killer did it for me, and getting rid of all but one widget on my homescreen. Also I flashed from cyan to super D. It's great!
Hi Guys ...
1) How do I do a wipe?
2) Is there faster roms then Cyan?
3) Can I get just a stock 1.6 Rom?
Thanks

Just about any. Cyan is a PIG -- throws in every kind of weird experimental performance degrading thing he can come up with.

Yes, I suggest the one at developer.htc.com/adp.html
Note: There is no apps2sd on stock, nor is there tethering.

I respect the amount of work he puts into trying new things.. but that doesn't mean I'd actually want to use his releases on my phone. No need to insult the man, either way.
P.S you should have really done more research on rooted devices before buying a rooted device, because when you want to flash a new rom you'll have a lot of reading to do...
Thanks for all of the help guys ...
As for the last post ... I got the phone becuase I liked it, not becuase I wanted a rooted device. I wanted a G1 that worked in Canada as we did not have them at the time. What came from eBay was what it was and I have made it work, it has just got slower in the 2 years I had it.
I have installed the stock ROM from HTC and everything is back to they way it was, nice and quick! ... Thanks to the members who helped.
Mike
I'm not sure how fair of a statement about Cyan you made. My wife is running a Cyan ROM and it's very fast. I'm running OpenEclair 1.2.2 and while I love it, it's not nearly as fast has her Cyan ROM. Also my stock G1 1.6 was getting terribly slow even after rebooting it.

Yours is wasting TONS of CPU and RAM doing GL in SOFTWARE.
Just wait for OE1.3, then you'll see the difference.

He doesn't need a source, it's fact that we don't (quite) have GL drivers running for Eclair yet, so it's wasting a bucketload of CPU power drawing everything in software. I'm not quite so sure how much RAM it wastes and how much is overheads from the rest of the Eclair system though.. I'm reserving judgement until I see hardware GL running. I understand OE 1.3 has the hardware drivers and is in testing now, so we'll know soon enough.

I already knew that, excep the part about OpenEclair including hardware drivers. Again, what is the source of OpenEclair 1.3 fixing these issues?
I don't know the full details but compatible drivers have been released for the hero or one of those similar phones and are in the hands of the relevant people.. OE devs have stated that 1.3 will include the drivers. I can't be bothered to find the post where it was said but it's here somewhere.
Just curious, as that is why I am not putting the latest FreshToast v1 on my phone - I use the camera every day...
So, are there any overclocked ROMs with the camera?? That would be great!

OK, so I am supposed to read 10,000 pages of random comments about the custom ROMs instead of asking?
I have searched by the way, and found no definitive answer. If it's obvious and you know the answer, why not post "no" or "yes" instead of the wise-ass reply?
And if the answer is not obvious - well, that's why I posed the question.

WOW! That must be new.... there is a search on here?
putting it simply, if there was an overclocked rom with working camera, everyone would copy that and have the same thing. then it would be easy to find one. did you see any roms on the front page with working camera and overclock?
ill hijack this thread...id like to see a stable 2.1 rom with everything working but stripped of sense totally, can it happen?
Only if you run a 1.5 rom.
I released a modified boot.img and wlan.ko that you can patch gumbo 1.5c rom with.
you can find it here http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-hero-roms-hacks/10138-gumbo-1-5c-overclock.html
I made it for my own personal use and just put it out there for anyone who might want it. All I did was apply the patch to the boot.img from gumbo 1.5c tweaker edition then flashed it to my phone. I was already running gumbo 1.5c tweaker edition so it has only been tested to work flashed over that.
It most likely would flash just fine over any 1.5 rom, but it will add gumbos custom low memory killer and a script that modifies the cpu scaling. If you use it you can't use setcpu. The rom already does what setcpu does.
If you do want it, flash at your own risk, and make sure to backup first.
I could release an overclocked 1.5 kernel that does not use gumbo, or is based off another rom if there is any demand for it, but I think with 2.1 around the corner, and so many almost fully functional 2.1 roms out there, the only people that would even be interested are those who can't run a 2.1 rom due to audio loss issues. that is not too many.

no, it won't happen till htc releases the .29 kernel source. though you could overclock and have it on 1.5 working, i'm pretty sure.
and for you guys who keep telling him to search, at least give him an answer. i understand how anoying it is to see all these threads... but really. at least still help out.

I compiled the oc patch into a 1.5 boot.img based off of gumbo 1.5c tweaker. Post #9 in this thread!
I am getting similar benchmarks as a OC 2.1 rom w/o JIT.
3.1 MFLOPS on linpack
28-29 fps on neocore not killing any tasks
6535 ms on benchmark Pi.
Stock 1.5 rom was
26 fps with all tasks killed
2.36 MFLOPs linpack
10635 ms benchmark pi
Thanks for the info obelisk, justin and obchaos.
Now, was that so hard? ;-)
For the rest of you, just because the search function does not yield an answer does not mean the answer is not out there, now does it?
I had better not see any of you ever posting a question on here ;-)
In any case, I remember 2.1 did not have the camera working for a while, then someone fixed it, right? So it seems that this is not a crazy question to ask.

i dunno about overclocked ones. you could use autokiller off the market to free up a ton of ram. i know setcpu does not work on 2.1
Just been on Linpack and found this
1 41.01 Nexus One 1113.6MHz google/passion/passion/mahimahi:2.2/FRF28/34953:eng/test-keys
Looks like someone is testing an overclocked version of another FroYo release.
Anyone able to shed light on this?
FroYo is FRF44 is it not? Apart from that, it's interesting that there is someone overclocking too.
It's here: http://www.greenecomputing.com/apps/linpack/linpack-by-device/
if this was facebook i would click like, but its not, you get the point
I would say it's an earlier Froyo build.
Weird that it's popped up now, especially with the overclock too.
I wonder if Google are looking at building in an officially overclockable kernel then?
Maybe FRF44 already has it?
Not sure if it's possible but it'd be cool if someone with a build could try running setCPU and see if that kernel can be OC'd.

That's an internal debug build... built from the FroYo master branch... all final builds have release name like FRF28, FRF44 and are signed with test keys... all release build also have the release names but are signed with release keys

this is quite OT, but I was wondering how come DHDs overclocked to 1.5Ghz can achieve 3k+ Quadrant scores but the G2 needs to be OCed to 1.8 or 1.9Ghz to achieve similar scores? The extra RAM of the DHD makes so much difference?
Well its a different processor, not just lower clocked.
I dont know the specs off the top of my head but i would guess it has smaller caches. That does make a difference. I doubt ram comes into it for most of the benchmarks.

Not going to lie, I had NO idea what I was doing... but I think I just stumbled through it all.....
are the kernels dangerous.... how can I test/check to see if it is worthwhile.... will they drain the battery even more so? thx
Depending what kernel and what clock speed you set, you should be able to underclock to around 700 +/- mhz and not have any noticeable slow downs.
Just make sure you set a lower speed when your screen is off and you battery will last upwards of 24 hours.
thx, I just that 1.51 one for now.... seems to be working well, I put a profile in for screen off.... dropping it to 256-756 or whatever it is! did some light benching, angry birds, no lag or issues so far.... woke up and the phone is still alive, lol

Does the ROM work fine?
Any nitz and RIL issues?
All this slating of airbus360. However if anyone bothers to try his rom, it is much better. I've been using cm9 since the first alpha up to the most recent release. It was good, but not a patch on this. Airbus's rom is much smoother, especially when flicking between home screens. Its also a lot faster. So although he may have used Teamhacksung code, he's obviously incorporated a few improvements of his own. Before anyone criticises, they should install it. It's a step up from the current cm9 builds.

Noon Question. How to install this so called beta version. Help pls.....
Been using this since last night.
Basically, looks the same as CM9 minus a few modifications, yet the ROM is a lot smoother then CM9.
Battery for me is great, roughly 1% loss an hour. Removed all uneeded apps via Titanium Backup.
Ive noticed one slight problem with the incoming call screen, icons misplaced. BUT, Still can be used.
I've had No FC's either.
I do really reccomend this ROM
