Hello everyone I was wondering if there was some kind of app out that could keep track of where we receive 4G? I think it would really help out because sometimes I find myself Looking at the taskbar when I'm driving. It would also let me shut off the radio when I know its not around saving the battery. If anyone knows thank you in advance.
sprint has a coverage map....
Unfortunately for cities that aren't supposed to have 4G yet (I'm looking at you, Los Angeles) there's really no coverage map for us.. I've been looking for a good clearwire/wimax coverage google maps mashup myself for awhile...
Perhaps someone could write a 4G wardriving app for our phone =D
Yeah well their map shows all of Kansas city highlighted when in fact it is hit or miss.. Kansas city is a very spread out metropolitan area. I find that their coverage map is inaccurate..
There are two Market apps that I have found for mapping cell coverage.
1)CellMapper
2)CDMA, GSM & WiFi Map Viewer (yes that is the full name as it appears in Market)
(1) says it supports 4G, but I haven't used the app extensively.
(2) does not specifically mention 4G, but their back-end servers can probably tell the difference. I found it more enjoyable to use, and it has more existing data available. (Look at San Francisco; there is a lot of data for all of the big 4 carriers) Just remember that it only tracks your coverage in the foreground, unless you specifically put it in background mode. Also, you'll probably want to disable "passive scanning" which will eat up your battery.
Whatever you choose, I would recommend only using them while driving so you can keep the phone on the charger while mapping. It eats a ton of battery. Plus, there's not really any point to mapping coverage while you're stationary!
thanks dude Im gonna try these today.. appreciate the info.
Any updates on what you tried, any results?
Yea, Sprint's coverage map is a joke. In most places around here, you have to shorten the border of 4G by about 1500-3000 feet of where you'll actually get coverage.

So today I was trying to kill my battery after wiping all data to rebuild the battery stats and randomly turned on 4G to help kill the battery, but found that it connected to Clearwire, rather than Sprint. Now I will have to drive around and try and locate the broadcast point.
I live in Wolcott, CT and small town in New Haven County that boarders Hartford County, next to Waterbury. This was a fluke that I turned on 4G but was surprised to see that it connected.
My speeds are crap but have gotten it up to 6mbps down, nothing better than 3G upload speeds though ~0.33mbps up.
Here are some pictures to show.
I live in stamford, no luck with 4g here.

i see your 4g bars, dont seem to much!
Sprint and Clearwire
I thought Sprint used Clearwire's WiMax network. (i.e. Sprint 4G is really a rebranded Clearwire WiMax) Not to mention Sprint owns the majority interest in Clearwire.
In Orange County California I came across a small pocket of 4G coverage. The weak signal only allowed about 1.65 Mbs down and 0.48 up which is far below the 4G spec but better than the usual 3G (altho also below the 3G spec).

Clearwire is Sprint's 4G provider. I have just never seen Clearwire listed as the ISP while in labeled 4G areas thats all...
What I find funny is Clearwire does not list any active broadcast location in CT, so I wonder why I am picking anything up...
A quick google finds that Clearwire is hiring in the Hartford, CT area. Everyone from customer support to RF Engineers. Perhaps you were close to their Hartford location.
last time I was in hartford (at the club lol) I got like 3-4 bars of 4G, it was AWESOME! That's the only place I've ever had 4g, since I live in the springfield area (I wouldn't give my city, that's just stupid. Even though I use my real name as my username and you could easily find me via google. lol)
anyways I was getting like 8mbps down and 2-3mbps up
That's pretty cool and all, but do you really want to post a map to your home on the internet?

Hartford is about 20-25 miles away from Wolcott, but I have noticed that they were hiring here.

I'm really not that worried, user name is my real name, and if you or anyone else really feels the need to come visit me have at it... Nothing a quick search on the internet wouldn't pull up anyways.
Im in manchester, I tracked down the tower...right in back of the sprint store...got nearly 12mbit on mobile speed test...at my house 1.5 miles away I couldn't even get a signal. I think its in low-power test mode. The signal drops like a rock as you drive away...what's wimax range? I thought it was many many miles, 20 to 30 if you still had a good line of sight....?

I will track down the broadcast point. There are a couple large cell towers in my area that I will start with.
I found the broadcast point, it was were I thought it would be, top of route 69. Was getting almost 11mbps down and around 1.5mbps up. Kind of weird that there is 4G in this area now.
I had 1 bar in new haven not to long ago and got a little over 4 mbps down and about 1 mbps up.
4G Waterbury CT
Hello everyone. Found this post searching around and figured I would join this great forum.
I found out earlier today that 4g service was started up in Waterbury. I saw that the OP is in wolcott. Flip on ur 4G and give it a minute to set up.
With speedtest.net Im getting an average of 9.25 down and 1.75 up.
The internet flies on this phone at those speeds. Web pages load in a second or so compared to 10 secs on 3g.
Finally we get our 10 bucks out of the deal, lol.
4g is all over newhaven and hartford
It's also available in stamford, ct - there is a tower on the TOP of the new Trump building.
Just google "4g stamford" or "4g your town here"
download the sensorly app on your phone and you can see real time reports of it down to road level.
You have to zoom in on this link before it gets accurate
http://www.sensorly.com/Map/4G/USA/Sprint/wimax-sp
nobody tried sensorly?
That sensorly map seems to be inaccurate for me at my current location, it says I should have 4g coverage but I do not. Back at home in seattle though I do have 4g almost everywhere so I am used to having it.
Edit: I stand corrected by the fact that if you download the app and zoom in really close (better then you can on the website) it shows I do not have coverage.

I get 4G throughout E.Hartford and Manchester. None in Glastonbury though. I get 5-8 Down in E.Ha.
There are pockets of 4g in Rocky Hill & Newington. Conveniently, the Newington Sprint Store has 4g coverage ;-)
Not the fastest 4G but like I said, it's still in the rollout phase....
Before Columbia?!! Ughhh. Congrats though!
anybody know when Columbia, SC will be getting 4G coverage?
Cool, I didn't think Sprint was still rolling out Wimax.
We have had it here in Atlanta for a while. Its so spotty and is always looking for signal. I never even use 4G.

I can testify to this statement. 4g coverage here in Ga is pretty much a joke, I actually called Sprint expressing my frustration for lack of connection at my house (inside and out) when their coverage map says its so great. All they did was put in a service call, I gave them radio numbers etc etc and after all that they told me "the area you live in is subject to a weak signal and that is why you have 4g issues, we will notify Clear Wire about the issue". In other words they told me that I live in a ****ty reception area and I am SOL.
Its to a point now I don't care if a port/custom rom doesn't have 4g, I can't use it anyway.
Same here 4G in Tampa. Spotty, useless "poor" or never connects at all. Not worth it. Outdoors is sometimes ok, but in a car or indoors forget it.
It's actually decent in San Antonio, but we were one of the launch cities for Clear internet so maybe that's why. When I'm outside or in the car, even when moving, it pretty much stays connected until you hit the city outskirts. I work in a metal building inside a warehouse, so in here I get no connection but that's understandable.
4G is up and running in Clinton Township I think the tower is in front of 7/11 on 18 and Hayes. I had 4G spuratic from Clinton River and Hayes all the way past 59. Anyone else notice this??
Funny as i used to live in macomb and worked at lakeside mall for 9 years. Good too see former neighbors on xda. I miss it over there.
If u look at senorly 4g is poping up all over, I check it every couple days and everytime I check it looks like one of those zombie outbreak maps where the infection keeps spreading and showing up in new places

They are adding a ton of areas but if my town is an example, it's hardly worth it. They added 4G here recently but it only covers one tiny area of town. I honestly think they just stuck it on one tower. It's in the shopping/everything else district but really no one lives down there. So it's not like anyone is getting 4G at home.
Clinton Township? Really? Wonder why they chose to drop a tower there? Nothing against that area, just wondering why it's there instead of Ann Arbor, of or Lansing.....some place a little busier?
They are throwing up a ton of single towers everywhere to just show the FCC they are using their spectrum. Very simple to see if you look around the maps on clear.com.
They need to do Jackson
They are spectrum holding towers to ensure that clear doesn't lose their licenses. Check out clear.com/coverage to see all the areas that are popping up. These may not be full power or full bandwidth sites, so YMMV

Lansing downtown does have 4g
Great news for Port St. Lucie, FL. We now have 4G!
I just drove down US-1 to see if it was true and all be damned. I have an app, Sensorly Map Viewer, that maps out the coverage areas for a couple different signals, such as 4G, CDMA, GSM and WiFi. and I've been keeping an eye on the 4G, anxiously awaiting.
A few days ago I looked and it was showing an area that covers US-1 (from about White City, down to Port St. Lucie) and extends inward stretching down Floresta Dr. (Prima Vista Rd., down to Port St. Lucie Blvd).
So today I had to run out and do some errands over off US-1 and was finally able to find out if it was true or not. I was so excited when I connected and ran a speed test, 6 megs download. That's what I get with being on my home WiFi.
Now the ****ty part for me is that the coverage, according to the map, ends just a handful of blocks north of my house. It's ok though, like I said, my Wifi is the same.
So if there's anyone down here, that I was able to bring a smile to, hit the thanks button.
Also, IF there is anyone around here, hit me up if you would like to share info about our beloved phone. I have so much knowledge but I would love to meet someone that knows how to theme or something.
PEACE TO ALL
Cool story bro.
May want to change the title so the rest of the country doesn't read the thread.
I'm going to try out that app as I'm curious to my local coverage, thanks

Yea, I was hoping that at least one person would find it useful. I've been watching the map ever since I downloaded the app. The closest 4G was about 40 minutes south of me for the longest. I was beginning to wonder when they were going to reach us. Glad I could help.
Swyped From My Work Of Art
So I have no coverage at home. I am 0.1 miles from coverage. The coverage map shows my whole area as full 2G coverage. However from appx my location to the end of the road (not to mention many more areas) I have zero reception. Again, these are all areas that show good coverage.
I have talked at length with AT&T and StraightTalk and made no progress towards a positive resolution. I have even installed an app that is supposed to boost signal in hopes to squeeze out just enough juice to bust through the small dead area between myself and signal range with no success.
I have also purchased a MicroCell after AT&T said my ST phone should be able to ride off the MicroCell. The catch is I have to activate it on an AT&T post paid account. I have no friends who have AT&T as Verizon has pretty much cornered the market in my area.
I do, however, remember a friend whom I've since lost contact with being able to access the Internet at my house. I am almost certain they had an AT&T phone.
Does anyone have any experience with similar StraightTalk issues and have suggestions? I am not the expert so I will not bother with speculation. I am using CM 10.1 however I had the same issue on stock OS. I am using a StraightTalk SIM in case anyone might want to travel down that road. I have tinkered with the APN settings however I do not think that path will work because I went to detect networks and I see nothing, not even foreign networks.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
If you don't have a signal you don't have a signal, no app or software tweak is going to get you access.
If it was no internet or MMS the APN might be the issue, signal is very basic it either works or it doesn't and it's not the straight talk Sim if you get access down the street.
Getting your microcell activated is your best bet, maybe an at&t store could help?

Are there hills around you? Lots of trees? How far away are the towers? Those coverage maps are always estimates. YMMV.

I'm in the mountains. I know that begs the response "well duh!" I was just hoping something I could try...
As far as the MicroCell goes: been there, done that. I would need someone who has AT&T to log into their account, add my MicroCell serial number and add my cell phone to the access list. If someone wants to work with me on that by all means let me know. I will thank you warmly and up your thanks meter if you post something to the ring of "I'm on it" as a reply.
Thanks guys 'n' gals.
Truthfully, activating your microcell on someone else's account would only cause problems in the long run. As a tech support rep of ATT myself, if you don't have the coverage your best bet is to just go with Verizon if you do have coverage with them. Would save you a headache, hours of phonecalls potentially troubleshooting the failure that is a microcell, and probably lots of wasted money you could've put forth towards something that does work.
