I find the 29.99 for true hotspot that can do WPA2 is worth it.. considering the same price you pay AT&T for similar service is more expensive.
the Wifi Tether app can only do WEP and seems to leave the wifi radio on when you turn it off... which drains your battery.
/b
So what's your point?
I don't care about wep or wpa, access control lists and ssh tunnels are all I need. That other stuff doesn't justify the $30 price tag.

me too. i love the hotpsot feature.. just yesterday i had a router issue but needed to get online to stream a conference,,, so i fired up the hotspot (in 3G) and had it,, a mac and my pro2 connected. 300K connection to the conference and still had some water in the pipe for the other connections..
totally worth it!

Sure, it's cheaper than MiFi or Overdrive, which is $59.99 / month
Sounds like you love giving your money away. The WiFi tethering app should do fine for nearly all of us.

Technically, it's only $29.99 for the EVO, so comparing it to other carrier's hotspot plans isn't accurate. It'd be better to use the regular price for Sprint's hotspot plan for that purpose, which is $59.99.

Currently, I have 2 iphones, and the 2 separate data plans that I have to get from AT&T for those. In addition, I also have a Verizon MIFI that I plug into my Cradlepoint router, to use as my home network for internet. Since I am capped at 5gb per month on my mifi, I really have to watch what I do each month on the internet (no streaming, etc).
I am seriously considering getting 2 EVOs instead, and ditching the iphones, and the mifi, but I would only do this, if I could truly use one of the EVOs as the main internet connection for my home. It makes sense to just have one of them with the $30 unlimited data plan, so I would only do the high volume of internet stuff when that phone was physically located in my house.
Is anyone using their EVO as their primary internet for their home?
i don't as i like my 12mpbs + comcast internet connection at home as the best i can get from my evo is 2-3mbps. you would not be in a good position if you have to rely on your evo to have internet connection. mainly, either phone has to be setup the same either either one of you leaves while the other needs internet access (and what would happen when you need leave and the other is using the internet?). secondly, what will you do for internet access while on the phone as sprint does not allow/voice & data at the same time. that is where you would benefit from the mifi as your internet is not dependent on your phone.
you would more than likely be saving money over the longterm by switching to sprint but you would not save money upfront. 2 x evo's @ $200 each = $400 + activation fee $36 = $436, cheapeast data and voice plan = $69 + $10 premium data usage = $79 + insurance/tax = $90 X 2 = $180/m for both phones
or family share plan
cheapest family plan $109 + (2x$10 premium data) = $129/m
you will save money overall in the end, but definately not upfront by switching to sprint. Does the $436 cost of paying for 2 evo's out weigh the cost of mifi for verizon? you could also look into getting a sprint mifi/hotspot instead....
Yes!!! I cancelled my stupid Comcast internet. I was paying $60 / month for a garbage connection that went down all the time. Sprint internet at least doesn't disconnect for periods of days at a time. Maybe it's not 6 mb/s YET but at least it's stable.
Basically it looks like this for me:
Before: Sprint SERO $30 + Comcast $60 = $90
Now: Sprint EPRP Family plan $45 + $30 Hotspot = $75
Cancelling Comcast: PRICELESS I despise this company so badly, that I think I would have paid more than double the price just so that I wouldn't be forced to use them. (My apt is covered by the Comcast monopoly unfortunately)
Seriously, try it out. Worst case you change your mind. I have nothing but good things to say, and I'm running only over 3G. I can't wait til 4G, it will be amazing. The only problem is, as you know, the phone must be there and not on a call. Also streaming netflix you get lower quality (not HD) video so that stinks but I am guessing on 4G it will be better.
This probably doesn't matter to you, but just so you know the pings are very decent for me at least: I range from as low as 70 ms to 150 ms if signal is bad. I've been playing games like Halo 3 and Warcraft 3 with no issues whatsoever ( and winning )
A disclaimer: I am single, living alone, so my flexibility is better. Still, if you are not in the best financial position, you have to ask yourself where the value lies in internet for $60 / month. Obviously a dedicated cable / dsl / T1 line is preferable, but is it really worth it?
Any questions feel free to ask.
After just my first post, i get 2 great contrasting posts, with useful information in both. That's awesome.
The biggest issue I see now, is the fact that you can't hotspot & send/rcv calls at the same time. That almost defeats the purpose, if I have to use my connection to work, and am either on the net, or on the cal
Is that true for tethering and the hotspot? Perhaps that is the same interface on the phone?
The cost savings would be about $50 per month, based on the config. Based on the months left in my contract, that would mean the sooner I want to switch, the better off I would be, from a monthly expense. The costs of early termination for both iphones, and my mifi, are not really that bad, and it actualloy appears that the sooner I do it, the better it gets.
Im surprised no1 has said this yet but are u aware that you can root ur phone and have free unlimited wifi tendering.
I use my evo as my main connection in my dorm. My college uses a wack internet connection in the dorms, that doesnt go above 1mb/s on wifi and 1.5 mb/s when using a landline. N on top of that they moniter ur connection, make sure u dont do illegal stuff.
So for me a evo is a gift from god
If you are not in a 4g area you could pick up an old sero plan for 30/mo and a cheapo winmo phone and tether exclusively from that, and use the evo for your main phone. When/if you get 4g, cancel or sell the sero line and use the 4g off the evo (4g is data and voice at the same time).
Was reading thru the threads and decided to try something out.Am running a rooted Evo with wireless tethering on 3g and just made a call to see if both will work at the same time and they doWe have Road Runner from Time Warner and it doesn't seem to run all that much quicker thru a wirless router than Sprint's 3g,If my wife and I tether both laptops to the Evo at the same time,it slows down a little but not too bad considering its free.
To the people talking about that Sprint does not allow Call and Data at the same time never considered 4G. You CAN do Call and 4G Data at the same time.
I ditched my Road Runner bill of about $40. Almost completed a month as my phone as my sole internet provider. I play on Xbox Live, stream from Netflix, and internet on my desktop and laptop. So far so good.. I live by my self so I don't need the internet at home all day. What I am running below:
Evo 4G (1.47.651.1 and 25% discount/month) + Root + Wireless Tether 2.0.2
I wanted to know if I can hard wire my phone to a router. One because my download speeds when I wire tether to my PC are about 1.5 to 2.0 mbs faster than when I wireless tether. And second I want to amplify my wireless signal.. make sense? lol

How is netflix over 4G? what quality do you get? HD? On 3g the picture is very standard def.
What if you try a kernel with wireless N? Not sure if it would be reflected in speeds, but in theory it should help.
having wifi N wont make anything faster except inter-network transfer, the bottleneck is the 4g, its slower than N, so anything between the phone and your laptop should be fast, but not to the outside world.

Netflix (wire tether) on PC looks the same, HD content does not look that great, maybe a hair better, but not by much. Netflix over Xbox Live is almost the same. HD content doesn't look like HD lol... but it is viewable
On a second note, trying Windows Internet Connect Sharing now. Not no expert in network by all means and first time I tried this..
But this is what I am trying to do. Wire tether to PC, ICS to Xbox 360 via eathernet cable.
Only reason I am looking for a wired solution is because it is faster. Wireless Tether 2.0.5-2 is slower than 2.0.2. On Xbox Live trying to play Modern Warfare 2 with Wireless Tether 2.0.5-2 is sloooooooow. Searching seems to take forever. Went to 2.0.2 and noticed connection speeds a lot faster. Can't play Red Dead Redemption multiplayer with any of the two. Hoping that wire tether + ICS will work.

You are correct but you need 2 things to make that work. First is 4g in your area and secondly a good/reliable 4g signal. I can't wait until sprint does evora so we dont have to have 4g
I am interested in the optional Mobile Hotspot feature and its extra-cost service. I cannot justify that expense if I have to lock it in for a whole two-year contract, but I would find it useful sometimes.
For example, if I plan to be traveling in a certain month and want to add this service for $30 for that billing cycle but drop it later, could I do so?

If you add/remove the hotspot service before your billing cycle they should be able to change it whenever you want.
Personally though, if you just root your phone, you can have free tethering whenever you want!
You don't have to commit to it, you can add and cancel whenever.
I heard that if you want to use the full-fledged mobile hotspot funstionality to connect to multiple devices, you must pay the $30 mobile broadband service, but if you just wanna tether to one device using, says, PDAnet, you don't have to buy the plan. Is it true? There are EVO users who claim that Sprint cut it off once they know you're tethering w/o plan even just to one device using PDAnet.

I believe the official statement from Sprint is that this is allowed. However, the last time I used PDAnet, it wasn't very good, and I much prefer the root approach to it, as that way you can tether via wifi as well.
The only way Sprint will actually know if you are tethering is if you are using HIGH AMOUNTS of data CONSTANTLY. Which in that case, they have the right to cut you off if its obvious you are tethering on a constant basis.
But simply tethering a few devices to browse internet, stream videos/music doesn't use up TOO much data. The most I've ever used was about 200MB when I had 3 laptops tethered to my phone for about 1.5 hours.
$30 bucks a month for tethering is ridiculous unless you plan on being tethered for days on end.
The rooted tether works perfectly on my Nexus, to connect laptops, my DSi, friends iphones/ipod touches etc and is best of all free.

Nevertheless, there is a difference between what the terms and conditions might forbid, and what you might get away with only because it is selectively enforced at the carrier's discretion. From Sprint's point of view, reading the agreement you sign, you might be considered to be cheating them out of payment for a premium service. You might think that "ridiculous," but you signed a contract.
I know about under-the-table, rooted tethering and hotspot creation. I can go to the dev forums and read about that if and when I need to. My question is about the business terms and process for following the contract.
The hotspot is $29.99 a month. You can turn it on and off all you want. If you only use it for the weekend, that's all they charge you for. I do it like twice a month with evo. I just chat with them and it takes like 3 mins. Most of the time I use USB tethering. I have 2.2 and cant root yet so I use PDAnet. Awesome little program. I have a good 4G so I use the hell out of it.
I've talk to sprint about it and the USB and Bluetooth tethering is fine. Free
Use PDAnet and it will work 4G and 3G.
If I plan to use the PS3 or Wii. Ill chat with a rep and turn the WiFi Hub on for a few days.
My wife has my old galaxy s with no data plan, I on the other hand do, when we're together I start my portable wifi hot spot, and hey presto she has internet connection !, I assume this is perfectly legal ?

Yup as long as you are willing to pay for it.
So do you have too pay for data accessed via tethering ?

Depends on your plan. If you, have the standard plan then once you go over your limit and if att catches you they will force you to get a teathering plan.
On the other hand I'm on a cheapest dumphone plan and run my SGS2 off my old Evo Sprint Wimax hotspot. Fast fast fast! No data accumulated on Att.
Isn't the WiFi tethering only available with your 3G?
Can you connect to WiFi on your phone and tether it to some other phone?
Sure.....s'what I been doing. Running my Samsung sg2 on sprints Wimax. No way I can live with ATT speeds. To gooda phone far that.
The pending Att GS2 will of course access a little better speeds on Att but I'll be hopefully back to Sprint using the Within... Or...Possibly T-Mobile Samsung Hercules. This all of course only til the Nexus Prime breaks lol!

No you're connecting with data (3G) and tethering it on.
I mean, can the phone connect to a WiFi network, then make a WiFi hotspot and let other phones connect to that? I think not.

I know I'm missing something here!... But my samsung is using wifi, (with network off) and connected to Spring Wimax...often with ITS data off.
I still make and receive calls on the Samsung.
So your phone becomes a hotspot or is an ad hoc connection to only one device?

Yeah gottcha. Same on the Evo. When Hotspotting (to my Samsung), the wifi is disengaged. Yes.
Yeh I have a 500MB data plan, and understand I'd get charged if I go over. Is great for my wife to get internet access when we're out and about without having to pay for her own data plan .
You can only create a portable hot spot with wi-fi turned off, so internet connection is only via mobile data 3G etc.. so the tethered device/s (upto 8 devices at any one time) can only access mobile data.

probably not until they have the next big Google event.
Kind of like what they did with the Nexus 7.
If they do make it 4g, it would be LTE, not Wi-Max.
Since you mention Wi-Max, you probably have Sprint? What kind of phone do you have, you can root it, get unlimited free tethering and never worry about a 3g/4g option on a tablet or laptop again! I recommend bluetooth tethering, much better on battery life.

Not to mention the cost savings. If you have unlimited data (or a significant data cap) on your phone you might as well save yourself the money a contract would set you back and just tether it.
I plan to use the Nexus 10 mostly at home on WIFI but would like the option of using it away from home, especially on holiday and cannot ever see me using it as a phone, so I just need Internet access.
I'm considering getting a MIFI which I can use when not at home and it will allow me to connect up to 5 devices and I can position the MIFI in the best place for reception whilst I use the devices where it is most comfortable. Also the reception on a MIFI seems better and you can add an antenna to improve it further.
I've tried using my phone as a hot spot on holiday but the reception indoors was not good enough.
So I'm planning to get the WIFI version and buy a MIFI for mobile use and not bother waiting for the 3g version to come out.
The difference in cost between the WIFI version plus MIFI and a 3G version is probably not much.
Has anyone else tried a MIFI + Antenna with an Android tablet and if so which one and how well did it perform?
Any reason to not just set up a phone as a mobile hotspot?

I don't want a 3g tablet so no waiting for me.
I have a 4g mobile hotspot that I can use when I need internet away from regular wifi.It is Verizon so is fast and works with everything instead of haveing several devices on a plan.It is so small I can stick it in a pocket if I needed to and have wifi anywhere on anything instead of just one device.
Unlimited LTE (w/Verizon) + FoxFi = WiFi version for me.
will it be a 3G version!?
Where have u seen that? im waiting for the 3G version as well.. its a must have to my needs :good:

No problem! Used it for the first time the other night and it worked great! I believe Sprint & AT&T have it blocked on the Play Store (if you use them). Here's the direct link to get around that http://foxfi.com/bin/
Also, WiFi mode does not work with 4.1 (except on the Verizon Galaxy Nexus). Hopefully they're working on a fix for that...

So what makes you think you'd get any better reception with the Nexus 10 if your phone isn't getting reception either? IMHO, data plans on these devices are a complete and total scam/waste of money. Get the wifi version and tether on your phone. If you are grandfathered into VZW or have the T-Mo/Sprint Unlimited plans you are golden. ATT throttles so screw them.

When I was on holiday in my flat in Spain I had to take my Note One outside on a balcony to get 3g. So I'm hoping that a MIFI with an aerial option placed on the balcony will enable me to stay inside and get 3g.
Also I have a 7.7 and a laptop which also had difficulty getting 3g inside the flat and a MIFI might solve that too with no extra cost.
An MIFI solution will not cost any more than a 3g Nexus 10 which I would need to wait for and I don't want to use the Nexus 10 for making phone calls.
The other reason I like the MIFI solution is that I can go out with my phone and the Nexus 10, 7.7 and laptop can still be used by others in the flat.
I had the same dilemma with the TF101. Luckily I didn't wait for the 3G version in the end as it was released months later.
I'm very happy with a MiFi device. Its on a 30 day contract (1GB for £7 per month) and best of all my tablet isn't consuming extra power running a 3G aerial. I use it every day for 3 hours on the train and charge it every few days.
The signal is also far better then my S3 and S2. But I guess it's designed to keep a high speed data connection open at all times.

But is there any information about a Nexus 10 with 3G/LTE capabilities???
Again, tether your 4G/LTE phone and connect via wifi for 4G speeds. If you are on an unlimited plan you'll have unlimited LTE going straight to it. If you are an unrooted phone learn to root and use FoxFi or install a custom rom with the wifi tethering baked in. If you have an iCrap it should already have the tethering option IIRC.
