I left mine for a Nexus One
But considering getting the EVO 4g soon as long as I can figure out how to use wiimote app with Sense UI for emulator gaming
Wouldn't hurt either to have some 4g coverage in SoCal...

I want to use my Wiimote This is BULLCRAP. But its awesome regardless.
I left the 3G for the Evo, but might be begging AT&T to take me back and forgive me sometime soon. Dealing with dropped calls left and right just isn't worth it.
Haven't had one drop call. I used to have about 5 drops a day with AT&T and I only talked a combine total of about 20 minutes a day. I haven't had a drop since I've had this phone and I'm in NJ.

Yeah the EVO is an awesome phone. If it had stock android I would get it today... but it doesn't so I need to find a workaround for Sense blocking the wiimote. If not I'll just have to wait for the next big thing (4.3' + dual camera + kickstand + 4g) that has Stock Android instead of Sense

Thank you for the response
I thought though that turning off the sense and running stock droid launcher only changes the way your home screen looks. But that the phone still is running sense everywhere else (which stops the wiimote emulator gaming in its tracks )
yeah but it doens't matter because htc phones have an oldet BT stack or something that doesn't allow stuff like wiimotes to work with the phone. i imagine using AOSP 2.1 or 2.2 might work but were not there yet so yeah.

i left a 3g for a hero and now the EVO
but, a great device is only as powerful as its network and service plans, and unfortunately both plans and service on AT&T blow more than the iphone is great...
$30 extra dollars per month just to own an iphone? LOL, now thats a business model (for at&t & apple)
I pay as much for my evo, hero and a candybar phone for my parents as I was for 1 iphone...
there are some things that are more refined on the iphone because they are about to release their 4th gen OS so they have time on their side, but its not enough...
R
I dumped my 3GS for the Evo, and I'm honestly not that impressed with iPhone OS 4. Did you notice the video chat is WiFi only, that because AT&T network can't handle it!

Wow. You FAIL. Do realize that when you go back to AT&T you aren't going to be able to use the Unlimited iPhone Data plan? That plan expired today 06/07/2010 and the new plan is $15 for 200MB or $25 for 2GB ($10 for every 1 GB you go over).
When they do JB the new iPhone you will be able to use the video calling over 3G most likely but do you think those 2 plans will suffice? SMH
Rule of Thumb: Do you research.
I left the iPhone 3GS for my Evo...new iPhone is too little, too late. Bye Steve!

So my dad is a photographer and uses google calendar for all his events. My mom is his assistant. After I got my g1, he loved it so much he got a mytouch 3g. His mytouch is god-awful slow, worse than my g1 when it wasn't rooted. As a result he doesn't use it much. I proposed the idea of rooting it and putting cyanogen on, but he's not so keen on the idea of roms and everything. So what phone should we get with my mom's 2 year upgrade for him? (we would give the mytouch to my mom (after I rooted it of course))
Nexus *cough**cough*
Yell him to wait on line at A&TT and get that IPhone 4GS and pick up a Ipad and a dock for it.
Just joking...The mytouch-Slide might be good since it will have espresso.
I suggest an Acer Liquid
It looks quite nice, its cheaper than all the other SnapDragons
Underclocked yes, but still quite speedy
Its a big improvement over the old G1 I had

Hi all,
First post, but I've been lurking for a bit.
Anyway, I just got my Hero with Sprint about a week ago and am running DamageControl's current ROM. It's a killer phone, but from what I understand the Droid has more processing power. I've got another 3 weeks to give back everything and get free Droids with Verizon.
I know this is a Hero forum, but I wondered if anybody knew of a "benchmarking" resource for all Android phones.....
thanks!
PS You guys are amazing! I can't believe the amount of product that comes out of this board.
as we all know, the hero was obsolete was 6 months before it came out. youll go broke trying to keep up. save up your months with sprint and get the evo when it comes out, you wont regret it ;-)

i like the hero and am willing to stick with it until the evo, and as for whatever comes out after that...i dont know. (android, htc, ect) will eventually release their own iPad, im sure, but i guess its a matter of what YOU want. i got a great plan with sprint (54$ for unlmtd everything) with great coverage (detroit it a major city, its bound to be set up good for the 3G user) and a highly customizable phone to say the least (ill admit i was disappointed when i got the hero, learned of the nexus and all the new upncumins) and am excited to move onto the evo, and can wait patiently.

I was able to see the evo up and running the other day.... WOW. Slim and sleek and very fast... took about a 1/3 or less of the time it took the Hero to open stuff. It was running on 2.1 as well and look really similar to Damages 2.1v5 ROM. This handset is going to really help out Sprint. Only thing the one I saw lacking was they hadn't activated the 4g on it yet.

Yeah, after studying competing prices, I don't know that I could stomach what everybody else is charging. I just don't get how anybody is competing with Sprint at this point!
I'm paying $129 -%15 for two lines, 1500 minutes, web, txt, and mobile-to-mobile. ANYBODY else charges $40-80 a month more!
I guess it's good for us they're so desperate for customers
PS I'm curious as to the price of the EVO. Any guesses?

I came over from a 3GS as well, and I might not have, if it wasn't for the iOS4 update. My 3GS was jailbroken, and set up really well, but I'm a big cycling fan (loved seeing HTC-Columbia featured in that Desire video, even if I did have to watch that tool Cavendish win...like I don't have to see that enough already), and the Tour de France app was crashing on 3.1.1, so I had to "upgrade". Even after jailbreaking iOS4, it was just never the same. Except for the camera and display, my 3GS would have handed the new iPhone its ass, in terms of functionality.
That said, I'm a longtime linux geek, and I did want an android phone, plus the school I go to, their website is in flash, and I do homework through it sometimes...very doable on the Evo, impossible on the iPhone.
Oh, and now I get through phone conversations without losing the call.

Of course they will, the inspire and the thunderbolt are the same phones in which both are basically a carbon copy of the evo which been out for 8 months with the exception of a few differences(mainly updated snapdragon and the newer version of sense). Anyway, sprint has too much riding on the evo name than to come out with an evo 2 with half assed specs.

It's got a better processor (MSM8255 45nm vs the EVO's QSD8650 65nm), more internal memory, MUCH better screen (SLCD), and Sense 2.0.
It's a better device, no question.
It's a better phone to be sure, but not a huge upgrade from the EVO. Though it's always nice to have choice, I'm sure some AT & T users would prefer another Sense phone.

I see the last thread with questions like this was from March, so I just wanted to get the latest about the EPIC...
Are there GPS, wifi, or keyboard issues or these are fixed by one or multiple ROMS available?
Are many devs still working on this device or had it been somewhat abandoned?
is CM7 pretty good without major bugs ?
will the battery last a full day with most ROMs with regular use (i.e. checking email, some web browing, maybe an hour of music streaming, etc)
Netflix works on some ROMs, right?
I have a Hero with CM7 and I like, but amazon still has (and BB just ended yesterday) free EPIC for upgrades, so thinking about getting one. I would get the EVO, but it's still $150 almost anywhere and at that price I would rather pay $200 for the E3D...but from $0 to $200 there's still a big difference
Thanks in advance

1. No problems with those in almost any ROM.
2. Devs are still around and work is still being done.

5. Yes, Netflix works on some ROMs.
Side note: Hero development was and still is pretty big compared to the Epic, dont expect the same amount of development for it.

Thanks for the answer, but wow, Hero has more development than the Epic? I wouldn't have expected that. I was going to get the Epic from BB yesterday, but the one I went to sold out and the next one only had two and I ran out of time, so I either get it from Amazon or wait for another sale
The Epic is a very awesome device and is adequte for your your eveyday uses on top of mods. The Epic has tons of ROMs, themes, and other customization tools that have been worked on the past few months which made many of them "bug free". The full QWERTY keyboard comes in hand which really makes this device "EPIC".
If you are a real hard core developer and wouldn't mind living without the keyboard then I would recommend the Nexus which is very simular but with monster hardware, like the dual core processor for increased speed and performance. The down fall to these new devices is that there has not been as much development put into them yet, so customization is not as optional compared to the "Epic". The epic is an advance telecommunicational device not a cell phone but unfortunately there are more cell phone users on the sprint network that don't understand the power of the Epic. I hope this clearifies your decision. I hope that you decied to live the "Epic Life".

Nexus S has dual core? Since when?
Also, Hero has more development since it was one of the first Android phones for Sprint, it was one of the nicest ones for its time and it was an HTC phone. Samsung tends to keep away developers. After the Evo came out, a few devs jumped ship to that but there were too many devs to let the phone die. Hell, look at Deca, I was so happy when he said he got an Epic knowing all the stuff he did for the Hero, I still cant wait what he can do for the Epic.

I have had my epic since jan maybe before but it seems like forever the phone stock is great I had no issues with any of the stock apps and functions. Now that I'm rooted and on syndicate frozen 1.1.1 its like having a brand new phone again. my opinion is get it you can't go wrong with it the slide out keyboard is great for games but with swype I almost never use it. Hope this helps.

You wont find a better phone on the Sprint network for the same price for at least another 6-9 months (Free).

The keyboard was a big factor for me in choosing the Epic over the Evo. I still think I made the right choice, but I *never* use the keyboard. It's just too easy to type with swype. Whenever I ultimately decide to upgrade, it will be to a phone with no keyboard.
I do apologize about the miss information about the Nexus 4g, I was under the impression that it has a snapdragon processor. I believe that's the E3D. Thanks for the correction guys.

i love my epic..... had a semi brick the other day had me worried but odin did the trick even had a screen that ppl well versed in the epic language have never seen but with some persistance i got her back up and running
If you root it, its a good phone.
GPS Aids is a must, GPS is golden now.
4G only works outside...
The Viper Rom is the best, just use Root Uninstaller to delete the teams bloatware.
Dont overclock (only fun for benches), its not worth the battery lose/glitches.. Just use setcpu to change the governor to Performance.. Alot of games play good with Performance gov. and clocks set to as low as 400 mhz.
Only complaint: No gyro. Dont give me any lines about this! I wanna play Nova with a gyro not a touch screen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I WILL MOVE OVER TO IPHONE JUST FOR THe GYRO, if still no phones/apps on android support it in Nov.
the keyboard is great for using Terminal Em. or punching in passwords. But ya it might not be worth the bulk..

I must be confused about what you mean by Gyro
I play quite a few games that operate via tilting the phone only, rather than the touch screen
