I was hit with the update before I knew better and it installed.
As soon as it restarted I can no longer access the top of the touch screen.
The notification bar, camera controls, web address bar, ect. there is basically a quarter inch dead spot at the top of my screen.
I tried factory and hard rests with no effect, the issue remains.
I did e mail HTC about this, but I'm not going to hold my breath on a reply, also the Sprint forums are down.
I installed the OTA last night.
My screen is not experiencing the issue you mentioned.
Might take it into a Sprint store for confirmation.
Good luck!
I am really enjoying mine.
I don't seem to be experiencing any issues since the OTA update either. It was the first thing I installed, even before my apps! I hope you get your problem worked out.
No problems here. I installed the OTA updates and have since rooted it as well. No problems.
3 Keyboards installed, Wifi-Tether(still working out the kinks) and its just moving along
no problem here either

Can we say it's pretty much safe now to go ahead and install the updates without worrying not being able to root after? Also did this update fix the SD Card issue for you? I've experience a couple times now that my card not being able to read until I remove it then place it back in. Even try formatting on the computer with a card reader but still no luck.
Both unrevoked and Toast's method still work after the OTA update.

I don't know about being able to root after the update. But if you root before and do the update. You don't lose root. Well at least I didn't.

Save a trip. Make sure it's a service and repair site before you drive. Unlike other devices, sales only stores are not able to accept exchanges on the evo.

You should probably clarify that a bit. With Unrevoked, you actually apply the OTA and then root that version. With Toast's method, you're actually writing a version of the old rom onto the phone, thereby overwriting any OTA update you may have had. Then when you apply Flipz rom to it, it wants to update but can't because it fails.
So if you want the OTA, you gotta do Unrevoked for now. Just wanted to clarify that for folks.

Aha, thanks! I had just read that Toast's worked and hadn't looked much closer.

sph, since you seem to know what you're talking about, can I bug you with a noob question? Can I follow the first few steps of toast's root process (these):
- Power off the phone
- Hold volume down while powering the phone on. continue to hold volume down until you see the WHITE bootloader screen.
- After a few seconds it will begin to checking for files, and find PC36IMG.zip. while its doing this it will show a blue progress bar while its checking. (this takes 30 - 60 seconds to finish)
- It will then list all the images in the zip and ask you if want to flash. SAY YES
- When its finished it will ask you if you would like to reboot. AGAIN... SAY YES
- At this point it will boot into a rooted rom.
- YOU ARE NOW ROOT!!!

.....then just STOP and be able to run apps that require root access? Or, do I need to go through the whole process and load flipz ROM, which does not yet include the OTA update? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm still learning the ins and outs of Android.
Hey I'm having the same problem with the notification bar only, I can access anything else just fine, but I can slide down the task bar at all. I bought the phone and the radio shack guy basically installed the ota as he handed me the phone, although my friend didn't install his ota yet and his task bar rolls down just fine. He postponed his ota because of this. BTW only way I can access it is by home screen menu button.
Ok just realised something since I was writing this from my evo in landscape mode.. I can open the task bar only in landscape not in normal mode. There's a bug right there, guess it only affects random users.
Update
I got my phone from the Sams Club (Radio Shack).
Called Sprint and they told me I am SOL as far as they are concerned, I have to deal with the place I got it from since it didn't ship from their warehouse (sounds like BS to me).
I can see why people are pissed at Sprint, they don't give a rats ass if my phone is having issues and will do nothing to help me get it replaced.
The guy at the Sams has been great the whole time and told me he will call as soon as they get one to replace it with, which since they are Radio Shack you have to figure that Sprint stores will be highest priority to get more phones so who knows how long it will take to get a replacement. I basically have a cool looking expensive battery eater.
I have had one e mail exchange with HTC and they told me to do a factory reset which I had already done twice before I resorted to "tech support". The reset does NOTHING to remove the OTA update. If this is in fact what caused this I can see nothing short of a wipe and reflash of the factory ROM to fix it. I am awaiting HTC's second reply.
I guess a rooted ROM may also be an answer, but since this phone is having issues already I don't know that rooting it would help my cause with getting it legitimately fixed.
A warning to all reading this, Sprint tech support will only tell you to remove the battery to try and remedy any issues you may have. They told me that is all they have been instructed to tell people with Evo issues.

Same here for me with the web browser I can use the upper right and left corners in landscape, but nothing in portrait; I can also drag the notification bar down in g mail in landscape. I will update my ticket with HTC.
Please log this problem...
with both Sprint and HTC.....I have the same problem. I "believe" it started after the OTA.
i'm having the same problem. just got my htc evo with sprint today. the notification bar was working fine until i installed the OTA update. everything else works fine except the notification bar will not work. the only way to access the notification bar is from the home screen by tapping menu and selecting notifications.
my brother got the phone friday when it came out and applied the OTA update and his is working fine.
i emailed HTC i will post the reply as well if anything is different.
i've googled this and apparently there are a few open forums on other sites with plenty of other people having this same issue. nobody seems to have a fix yet.
just a heads up when i called sprint they acted like idiots and told me they couldn't help and to take it to the sprint store to have them troubleshoot it.
that kinda irks me because after ending my 7 year relationship with t-mobile i really thought that sprint would be a little bit better. oh well... you win some, you lose some.
I didn't apply the OTA, but ran into this issue this morning. Taskbar would not roll down...It would start to for a split second, then snap back up.
A soft reset seems to have cured the problem for now.
Hi, I got the following SMS this morning from T-Mobile, "You'll soon receive the download to update your T-Mobile HD2. It's free & there's no charge for the download, all you need to do is accept. T-Mobile".
Now, this dont sound right. Firmware files are normally huge and I have never had a message like this before. I have the 1.66 stock ROM and not the 1.72 T-Mobile one which is pants.
Has anyone else had this message or the updates and if so what are the updates.
Thanks
John
I got a text from them when they released the 1.72. It wasnt worded like that though....... and I havent had a message like that from them recently.
Maybe they're going to send you Android to run on your HD2
Or maybe not............

Really? Do you think so?
Wow that would be sooooooo kewl.
I got the exact same message about two weeks ago, I'm still waiting to see what official crap they throw out if anything!
never had anything of that sort... ever. only found out about the new ROM on XDA.
Same message received today still no further details
yes i have the text its downloaded tk my handset and keeps asking me to install, not untill i know whats in it!
Install what?? Is it a link to something or did they actually send you a file.........
Just received the same text. Have noticed connection issues over the past few days, this update maybe something to do with this?? It's not going to be a rom update as that would be huge and would obviously wipe the phone on install - something that T-mob cannot legally force on you surely?
PS anyone get this message running a stock t-mobile rom. Mine's Stock HTC 1.66 - they might be on to us defectors
Just noticed on HTC rss feed that O2 had a UTMS900 update for HD2, this may be what we are getting.
I'm so glad you wrote this post OP! I was going to ask about that text, which I also received this morning, over on the T-Mobile forum but my forum user details are not what I thought they were so couldn't log in.
Like a few of you have written here, I'm not installing it until I know what it is. I'm afraid of all my phone content and contacts being wiped.
I also received a text about a ROM update just like the first respondent to this thread but I didn't want to ruin what is already a working phone!
count me in too.
Same message as the OP. Uk Tmob
Thanks guys for all the feedback. I am defy NOT installing anything on my phone until I know exactly what it is and what it does.

anyone got any more news on this? Have posted a message on the t-mobile forum but won't hold my breath as they will probably come back and say what is a mobile phone
I still havent got this bloody message......... I feel kinda left out now.....
Received today:

Written by some sort of PR / communication department half-wit or a spammer/scammer but WTF does it mean ?
received mine today as well.......
So after weeks of having my unbranded Desire HD... I still have not received any update. This is ridiculous.
I am still on
Android Version: 2.2
Software number : 1.32.405.6
I noticed someone else in one of the other threads in a similar position. Just wondering who else has not received any update yet. Is it because we have unbranded phones? Is it because we missed the window to update? Please share your scenario?
I have even tried to contact HTC about it. They were quick to answer, although not very helpful at all.
Anyway... this is as far as I have gotten.
**************
I bought the Desire HD not long ago, but the software is still old. (1.32.405.6 and android version only 2.2)
I heard that updates that have come out help with many of the problems I am experiencing but it seems you have pulled any updates off the air (maybe due to the last update being buggy).
A friend is using this version:
(software number: 1.75.110.2, build number is the same… kernel version is 2.6.32.21
And android version is 2.2.1)
Everything seems to be working really well for him.
Can you send me an update please as the phone is performing REALLY bad at the moment, and it is frustrating that I cannot get an update OTA
***
Thank you for contacting HTC.
There is no way to send an update to a specified device. It depends on several factors.
Firstly, when an update is released it is then sent to various networks so they can add their own branding to the os, so a 3 phone for example may not receive the update until several months after Vodafone.
Another factor is that Over The Air updates are generated by a server which releases these updates to a bolck of serial numbers at a time. Rest assured you will get the update, but when depends on your network and your serial number.
***
Although my network provider is T-Mobile, there is no branding on this phone as it was not bought from them or any of the networks on a plan, so there should not be any rebranding required. Also... my friend who did get his phone from T-Mobile received his updates in early December.
I have heard of quite a few other cases in the same boat on forums. They bought their Desire HD in mid-late Jan, and have not been able to get an update. It is as if the updates were pulled off the air at one point and anyone who bought the phone too late does not get a chance to update, and is being left in the cold.
I know that what you have said is true in general, but is there a chance that a whole bunch of serial numbers are being left out? Or maybe phones that were bought independently are not getting updated because the network provider is not updating those phones?
Is the update coming from the internet? or the network provider somehow?
I decided to buy the phone independent of network branding so I would not have to wait for the network to brand their phone which took way too long with my last phone. Now that I have a phone that does not have network branding it is taking even longer?
Can you look into this in more detail as I find it hard to believe that an update has been out for 2-3 months and an unbranded phone is not getting any updates.
Also... is it not possible to for you to send me something so I can update it myself?
***
Thank you for your reply.
The reason these updates are staggered is that if they are all released together it would comletely clog the networks and so this method was divised and must be adhered to by all companies and all networks.
Have you tried scanning for the update as their is a possibility it may have been rejected.
To do this goto menu, settings, aboutphone, then search for update.
If it is already available for your serial numebr the device will find it. I would suggest you check over wifi.
***
I understand that the updates are staggered to not clog the networks, but you have not attempted to answer any of my questions.
My phone is unable to find any updates when multiple updates have already been released while I am stuck on the inferior software that came with the phone Android 2.2 Software number 1.32.405.6. The update to 2.2.1 came out in late October. Common sense would say that all phones would be updated at least once before a new update is released? ie... If the latest update has not yet been released to my serial number, then I should at least be able to update to the version before????
Which is why I am asking you all those detailed questions. Are you not able to check what serial number ranges should have already been updated?
Can you check anything?
Is there a window that a phone can be updated... and if it is missed, does that mean they dont get that update??
Yes I have tried scanning for the update many many times.
***
I have attempted to answer your question to the best of my ability so I sorry you are not happy with the answers. The update is 100% randomly generated on serial numbers.
It is not possible to send to a specific serial number as it is fully automated.
It is not possible to check whick serial numbers have been updated- This is every Device worldwide!
If you perform a hardware reset- ie battery out, replace battery after 10 seconds, hold volume down button then briefly press power button. Wait for the Android screen to come up then scroll down to factory reset or erase storage.
Quite often this wil force an update within 24 hours.
PLEASE BACK UP YOUR DATA AS THIS WILL REMOVE ANYTHING STORDE ON THE PHONE.
***
Is there a window (time period) that a phone can be updated... and if it is missed, does that mean they dont get that update?? Or once an update is available for a particular serial number, that phone will have access to the update for months and months?
***
I've had the phone since October and I have the same software version as you, so relax. There was one update to 1.72 / 1.75 but they pulled it due to major bugs. We are waiting for it to be fixed and sent OTA atm.
No point waiting for HTC to release another buggy ROM.
Just root and it enjoy the infinitely better custom ROMs available in the Development section. No official HTC ROM past, present or future will perform as good as the likes of Android Revolution or LeeDroid ROMs.
Then, if you ever have any problems that mean you need to send your phone back, just flash official ROM and your warranty will remain intact.

From what I remember about the update scheduling, MS can push updates past carrier certification if the carrier delays until the next update is ready. I would love to see MS use these little micro-updates to game that system. Anything that helps to reduce AT&T's interference in the use of its own network is fine by me.

That would be pretty tricky, but I would think MS would at least hold off until carriers have shown a pattern of delays.
the only problem is that it isn't really an update. It's an update to help out the future updates. Wtf is microsoft doing? This OS is developing slowly, and their communication is horrible. I feel like I'm going to want a new phone by the time this mythical update shows up (that hopefully corrects all the flaws)
Focus
Everyone with a Focus should read the thread in the Windows Phone Forum very carefully and take a wait and see attitude before updating. Not looking good for the Omnia 7 and starting to look bad for the Focus.
Samsung owners claim Windows Phone 7 update has bricked their devices.
I personally had a Samsung Intrepid v6.5 that after an update, it became a brick. There was NO way for me to go back to the previous version either.
Anyone got the update?
Has anyone got the update yet or a notification of it? I checked my wifes phone and it said no update through the phone or zune. It's completely stock (except the memory) so I'm hoping it won't have any problems.
Edit - Nevermind. I guess it's staged over some time. It also shows her having the firmware that is having so many problems so maybe waiting isn't a bad idea.
Version #
How do you know if you recived the update? I hook up my phone yesterday, and it started synching stuff that has been on my phone for months. The items were never changed since I installed on my phone. I check in the Zune software and it says I'm up to date. Do you get a message that says, "Hey stupid, here's an update"? MS doesn't seem to clear and what is supposed to happen. Do you get a text, or a number in your Marketplace tile, or what?
My firmware version ends in JJ1 for PDA, Phone and CSC.
I got that from dialing *#1234# from the diagnostic app.
I have not seen the notice for the update yet.
Anyone else with a Focus seen the update yet?
Let down in wireless promises
I'm am so let down with Carriers & Manufacturers promising updates! I had the Captivate when it came out, and was happy with the expection of 2.2 Froyo being released. As I was waiting I rooted the phone and ran a developers version of 2.2, which was great. In Jan I decided to swap for the Focus because it was just a simplier phone to use. I noticed on the MS website it even notated an expected release of an update in Jan.
All in all, when you buy a phone I would recommend not giving into the impulse of buying it just because they say updates are coming, especially with Samsung. I do love both phones, but this is just terrible. Seems like technology has gotten to the point that if what you have isn't ready NOW, then it's already old news and updates are just a fantasy.
For gods sake, now there's the new 4G HTC Inspire running Froyo promising Gingerbread.
Actually, the only thing I wish I could do on the Focus was watch youtube videos in high quality using 3G... Hahaha... I guess making ring tones too, but that's it!

AT&T NOT holding back update
I had to speak to the Technical Support area of the AT&T Warranty Center today. All of a sudden, after 2 months, the battery icon at the top of the page ehibited the following symptoms:
. Blinks on and off, sometimes with the "plug" showing on the battery icon even though the phone is not on the charger. Blinks about once every 2 seconds.
. "Beeps" everytime it blinks.
. Screen will not turn off because this icon is blinking.
I was told that Technical Support had a meeting yesterday and that this is a know issue with WP7 by Microsoft and that the upcoming late February/early March update will contain a fix for this issue.
I asked why I had not recived an update notification and whether AT&T was holding up this update. The TS person said absolutely not, especially since this update will contain bug fixes that affect currently released phone models. AT&T is not holding back the update.
This person also told me that the issue is suspected to be caused by a virus that enters the phone when browsing the Internet and that warranty does not cover viruses. Well, that set me off. Their phone, their OS, their browser. I'll address this to be sure.
But, the update is coming, contains fixes, and AT&T is NOT holding it back.

No, not a chance. I already contacted the store manager who I purchased the phone from and he has guaranteed a warranty replacement. I am still going to wait for the update to see if what the ST&T TS person was speaking the truth. If I have to, I'll take the SIM out and put it back in my FUZE running 6.5.x.
I received my updated today ! Window poped up and said there was an update. When I went to check the market place, there were no apps there were ready for up date. One would have to think the small update for the OS was sent out. How does one check ?
Sync through Zune.
Oh ya.... the OS update is not OTA (over the air) like the apps update. I will go sync now.
okay seems the update was pulled after some issues. I was rolled out again this week !
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-20039227-94.html
Seems there still might be an issue according to the article. I plugged my phone into laptop this morning after receiving another notification yesterday. It seems to be installing now. Fingers are crossed for no issues.
EDIT: OS Version after update reads 7.0.7008.0
The update took about 10 minutes.
I've been checking for updates on my GT-I9505 and so far I've gotten that everything is up to date already and now all of a sudden I got the following message: Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available.
The most weird and infuriating is that I have purposely kept my S4 completely stock, no root, no nothing. All I've done is that I've installed a few alternative launchers.
As far as I've understood - I can use triangleaway to get back to official (I'm on baseband I9505XXUDMH6). But seriously, what's the point of that status anyway, if I don't root or flash and it still gets effed up???
Anyone seen or heard of something like this before??
What should I do, any suggestions?
At the moment I'm planning to go to the local (tech) store, where I bought this in August (or maybe end of July) and going to have a little chat, if they tell me, that it's my fault and that I must have done something, then Samsung Estonia, here I come....and if things go really south then I'm going to the Consumer Protection Agency (hope it has an understandable meaning....don't know the international equivalent), so far in Estonia they've managed to do something if things are really wrong and hurt the consumer.
I also realize that I'm furious at the moment, but I'm also really serious....worked my butt off to buy this phone and shown great restraint not to flash or root and something like this happens....
Let this be (warning sounds too harsh) note to all not rooted and trying to keep their warranty and if anyone can share some insight, suggestions, sympathy or whatever - thank you!
It's been over two weeks now.
I've been in contact with my retailer, they only recommended a factory reset and the clerk admitted that he's not too familiar with the subject.
Samsung Estonia takes a bit too long with each of their replies (as they're probably too busy with marketing all the time), but they have more helpful replies than the retailer - told me to go to a service center in Tallinn. They were able to be more helpful with other issues that I had raised.
I also read from their site, that the 4.3 update is live in Estonia since October 31st, so I wanted to try if Kies would update my device although the device status isn't official - it only showed that my device is up to date. I was just bored and decided to try OTA as well - surprisingly it didn't say that it wasn't able to update, because the device isn't official, but it said that my device is already up to date.
I rushed through the settings to check it out and now, totally out of the blue, my device is once again official.
Whoever might wonder upon this story in the future with a similar problem, I'm sorry that I couldn't help you and can only wish you patience, good luck and hope that things will turn out better in the end as they did for me (for the moment at least)
A new development:
After the device status turned official again, I found out that the 4.3 update should be live in the Baltic region since October 31. But my phone still didn't find it. Samsung Estonia finally said that it's probably the fault of a wrong region setting, but it has to be checked and can be changed for a fee, as warranty doesn't cover it. I've been checking for an update for the past couple of days and this morning the device status had changed to custom once again. Wrote to Samsung Estonia, that I'm fine with waiting for the update or paying for the region change, but a device status switching back and forth between official and custom is Samsung's fault and it should be dealt with by them.
Hopefully they'll get the message and will clear this mess with their own resources.
Hey there.
I had a similar 'issue' not long ago. I randomly browsed through the settings and the 'about' section to find that the device status was unofficial. I haven't rooted or flashed anything at all, however it didn't really create a problem. I then restarted my phone, then it said 'official' again only to change back to 'unofficial' again in about 10 minutes.
If i restarted and tried to update quick enough it would work, if the phone ran for a while I got the same message as you 'your device has been modified' or something.
I got the 4.3 update and the problem has since disappeared...
I started a thread too out of curiosity but no one seemed to know the answer. It might just be a little software bug
