Hi,
I have a really old phone (well maybe not REALLY old - 2years?) It is the Cingular 8525 and was my phone under contract with Cingular prior to getting a phone upgrade. It has been sitting around collecting dust for 2 years? And I think I finally have a use for it!
I am travelling to Greece, and I would like to pick up a prepaid 3G sim card upon arrival. I just want to make sure I unlock my current phone before I depart so that the phone works when I get the sim card in Greece!
ALSO --- My goal is to turn the phone into a WiFi router so that I can hookup my Laptop to it for checking emails etc... While I am travelling about. Are there any cooked roms that unlock and provide such WiFi functionality I am looking for?
Thanks!
I got my HTC unlocked
I have a unlocked HTC 8525 it is locked to AT&T and I use tmobile and others in it. What I have is a little chip that fits under the sim card.
I have also used it in a Nokia N95 8GB from the UK with
and USA At&t, Tmobile and others.
ww.dealextreme.com/search.dx/search.unlock
It comes from china and took 3 weeks to the USA.

Wot happens to sour cream when it goes off?
did u buy you exec from O2 on a contract and use the suplied sim card with it ?
yes
sorry miss read question
i used my old sim card
thats why then, your old sim is only 2g equipped, dont ask, its O2 there bein total [email protected] about it, aparently to use O2 3G you have to purchase an O2 3G phone which will come with the new sim called a USIM, most other networks actually sell these new sims or allow the older type to use the 3G dunno why o2 has to b awkward.
if ya dont wana use this new O2 sim of yours u send it my way
phone was an upgrade, so have not got a new sim just my old one that i have had for 4 upgrades now
get onto o2 then n see what they say, you'll probly get screwed over n told to fek off but there bound to get enough complaints sooner or later to make them start selling the usim in the shops...
definately need a new USIM (with 3GP towards the end of the sim number).
Also check your predicted UMTS coverage online.
nah just phone o2 up and say that the sim card you have isn't compatible with the exec, and that they provided the upgrade, they should have checked that it was compatible, so essentially either they replace the sim free of charge, or you send the phone back.
tbh, it shouldn't even get that far, just by saying that you want to make 3g calls and that your sim card is not compatible with 3g should be enough for them to send you out a replacement. After all, they are always giving sim cards away for free, payg granted, but surely they will look after their contract customers better... at least they did for me a few years back when the Nokia 8210 was all the rage and my old sim card then refused to work with it, they sent out a replacement free of charge, arrived next day too.
Assuming you're in the UK o2 will provide you with a new 3G sim card free of charge - all that is involved is to port your account to the new card (occurs within 24 hrs after you arrange it) - your phone will be fully operational (minus 3G obviously) up until the transfer to the new sim card actually occurs.
The o2 upgrade procedure very clearly states that all customers upgrading to a 3G handset should be given a new sim card - that applies to o2's own retail stores and o2 online - if you got it from a third party company (P4U, Carphone, MobileShop etc) they may insist you charge.
There are actually pretty good system reasons why they do not just enable 3G on existing sim cards (which in theory is possible) - it's to your benefit to get the newer simcard as it has minor improvements to make them more future-proof.
Hope this clears things up

Hi
I had to ring o2 to get a 3G Sim card and it was F.O.C, or you can go in to any o2 shop and pay £4 for a sim if you dont want to wait 3 - 4 days
@ nosdrahcir
never knew that, but I suppose it makes sense, as then it means that the customer will have not have to ring up if the old sim card is not compatible, but then again, I think they don't send new ones on upgrades to save money, and only send out replacements to those who actually need it.
in 3 years of owning an XDA this is the first time i have had to post a problem, i usually just read other posts to solve them.
Thanks to everyone who replied
got it sorted now
phoned o2 and they are sending me one out today
what happens to sour cream when it goes off??
Hi
I'm off to the US in a month. I've got an unlocked UK MDA Vario ROM 1.6.2.4 WWE Radio 01.12.10. I've ordered a couple of T-mobile prepaid sims from the US so that my family and I can keep in touch over there without being stung by rediculous roaming charges. I gather the Vario will work with my own sim over there but will it work if I put the US sim in it? or do I need to start changing the ROM of the phone?
(I've also got an M1000 (UK) and a couple of Siemens CL75 poppy phones which are also unlocked and should work over there with UK sims)
If there's no joy with my existing phones I'll just get a couple of cheap prepay phones when I'm over there but I'd prefer not to if I don't need to.
Many thanks

YUP !!!
It'll work perfectly, provided as you say its SIM unlocked, but if its not sim unlocked then I'm afraid, you won't be able to use t-mobile sims.Download the WST tool and verify the locked/unlocked status of your phone or insert sim of any other network in the phone other then the official sim you are using and check if it works or not.
Cheers!
Many thanks Zabardast_1.That's good news. Yes it works with any uk SIM in it (except 3 of course). I unlocked it a while back.
Kind regards
Twojags
It should work
Hello twojags,
I'm also using a SIM-unlock WIZARD (German version) with a US t-mobile prepaid-SIM.
It works without any problems...

I just inherited my brother's phone, a wing he used in the states and i owuld like to use it in the UK. can anyone please help? im dying to try this manificent phone
google IMEI CHECK
i know about imei check but i was hoping there would be a free solution out there
unfortunately not at this time for the Wing.
Is the Sim Unlock Available for Wing
Is the Sim Unlock available for Wing Now or still not. Any help will be really appreciated.
No. it's been 2 days! haha
THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO SIM UNLOCK THE PHONE FOR FREE.
Have a T-Mobile user put their SIM card into the phone and call 611 from the phone. Go to Customer Service and inform them that you will be leaving the country and would like to unlock the phone so you can use international prepaid SIM cards to call your aunts and uncles in *insert non-US country here*. They will give you the unlock code for the phone.
This will only work if the T-Mobile user has had the T-Mobile service for more than 30 days. If you are able, have your brother do it from his SIM card since he had the phone previously.
Thanks for the advice. Works!
Ok, just for conversation. Lets say I want to get a new wing with my equipment protection from Tmo. Does a SIM unlock on my old wing make it useable for others?
Equipment protection? Huh? Are you talking about getting it replaced with the insurance? and giving your old one to someone else?
When the phone is locked, it ONLY works under T-mobile.
When the phone is unlocked, it will work with any carrier, ie TMO, ATT, etc..
How about Vodafone NL..
Is there any free solution to sim unlock it ..?
Anyone with a Herald/Atlas or any of its variants ... are all in the same boat. There's no free unlock solution as of yet.
AT&T and T-mobile both have the same policy on unlocks:
- Account must have existed for at least 3 months
- Must not have had an unlock request within the last 3 months
- (Generally) Must be outside the Buyer's Remorse period (30 days)
- Must not be one of the 'special' phones (Sidekick, iPhone)
If the Wing is an upgrade to your existing service, you can get it unlocked after 30 days.
New customers must wait 90 days.
Simple workaround: If you know someone on T-Mobile with an available unlock (one per 90 days, remember), you can just give them the IMEI number, make & model, and they can unlock it from there. They do not check if you're calling from that phone -- but the phone must still belong to the carrier/be branded with that carrier
SO if my phone is "lost" and i get a new phone. Is myold wing good to go for someone else?

Is someone working on unlock for Herald???
I am thinking of selling my hero for round £150 because i can just not sort out the problem it has so maybe some1 with abit more knowledge will be able to sort it. It all works fine apart from the problem with the sim card which is for some reason it does not register any sim cards. The phone is unlocked and i was using a 3 sim card in for about 2 months but then all of a sudden i lost connection and then i could not reconnect with any sim card =/ i have tried different firmwares and radios but nothing seems to help. It certainly isn't barred i know that so i really duno what is up with it but would be a bargin for someone who does know. P/M if your interested
It ssems like phone has been blocked.Did you buy it from previous user? Contact him/her , or the branded supplier with imei number for their explanation.
no it use to be on contract but had a problem and came off but it hadn't been blocked by them i was using it for a while after i had come off use to work fine then it just did this. I have heard there are problems with 3 sim cards sometimes thow so wondering if it was the sim cause other sims just get stuck on the registering bit like the sim unlock hasn't worked
Just curious, but why haven't you contacted whoever you bought the phone off?
Definitely sounds to me like the handset has been barred. If you bought it as part of a contract, but then cancelled the contract early, well it makes sense for the operator to bar the handset if you didn't send it back.
Quick call to 3 (assuming that's who you bought it from) should give you an answer.
no its a tmobile i shall ring them tomorrow see what they say
Wavesecure in ROM, allowing to lock / locate / wipe your device remotely in the event of loss and be notified if the SIM is changed.
that doesn't really solve none working sims though does it ?
iv just paid for an imei check and just waiting for the result now
this phone is blocked by tmobile but not by other networks that is why it registers on tmobile but wont make calls or texts so am wondering if its something to do with the unlock code iv put in =/
Bought a 2nd hand hero (tmobile). Unlocked it with http://www.unlock-now.com and put my O2 sim card in... and nothing. Have tried with my prepay O2 card, PAYG O2, 3 and T-mobile cards and only the T-mobile one works.
Flashed it with various different ROMs but each time I get no service; when I go to \mobile network settings\network settings\search networks I can see O2-UK but when I select it I get "your SIM card does not allow a connection to this network" (although it works in my Touch 3G).
BUGGER! have looked everywhere, but for the life of me I can't find a fix for this.
Would really appreciate any suggestions; my Touch 3g is very flaky and I need a reliable phone asap- live deep in the country and wife about to have a baby!
Firmware version 2.1
Kernel version 2.6.29-8d063048
Baseband version 63.18.55.06ju_6.35.09.26
Build number 2091203 hero_generic_wwe
Software version hero21-community-1.7
G2 Touch/T-mobile splash screen on boot up
Running HERO21-1.7-Community-signed ROM
i bought this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290381617887&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
Works absolutley perfect! On any locked Hero on any Network!
pounana,
i too had a t-mobile hero, and got a code from unlockr, and all worked fine with my o2 sim.
have you tried contacting unlockr? sound like the code didn't unlock the phone....?
don't know what else to, BUT, when you get it working i've got all the settings from o2 for the mobile web and mms. i would post them now, but haven't got them to hand, will do soon
good luck
