**DO NOT POST ANYTHING IN THIS THREAD AT ALL, PLEASE READ THREAD, THEN INSTRUCTIONS** PLEASE READ AT LEAST ONCE, THEN DECIDE IF YOU WILL HELP OR NOT.
Do to the success of the "General PPC Question" thread at the top of this page, and the amount of members, from noob to seniors, that are willing to support any cause that will stop unnessicary posts, I have created this.
This is a work in progress, but here is the concept. This thread will list every imaginable question you can think of , that may be asked by a nooby, or any member, and give the best possible answer. There is no other thread like this, and it will need help from all of you genius members.
In here will be the answers to question such as,
*What is a ROM
*What is G.U.I. or Graphical User Interface?
*What is MortScript?
This may seem unnessicary, but it's not. This is the most popular section in this forum, and will not stop being the bombing ground for every question and thread that hits this site. So why not cut the problem off before it even lands as a new thread. So heres what I need from you.
If there is a TOPIC you would like posted, or if you have the exact answe to a question posted here , please PM me. Put the question you would like to see listed, and the exact answer, and label it , "Question".
Afte a couple of days, this thread should be jam packed with questions and answers.
At least give it a try.
INSTRUCTIONS:
*MAKE NO POST WHAT SO EVER ON THIS THREAD, ALL QUESTIONS WILL HAVE THERE OWN SPECIFIC THREAD AND THREAD NUMBER, AND WILL BE LISTED IN AN OVERALL GLOSSARY FOR EASY FINDING.
*PM ME THE QUESTION (ex: What is a ROM? , What is MortScript?) FOLLOWED BY THE EXACT ANSWER. NO GUESS OR YOUR EXPLANATION. TRY TO WORD IT WHERE IT CAN BE UNDESTOOD FROM A NOOBY POINT OF VIEW, AND MAKE SURE IT IS RIGHT. THE SIMPLEST QUESTION YOU CAN THINK OF MAY BE THE HARDEST FOR NEW USER, SO USE YOUR IMAGINATION.
*LABEL THE PM, QUESTION FOR NEW THREAD
*I WILL DO THE REST, AND THIS WILL BE UP AND RUNNING WITHING 48 HOURS AND JAM PACKED WITH HELP FOR EVERYONE.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, Give this a try. No one thought the General PPC Question Thread would help or make a difference either, but look at how it is growing. So at least give it a try. The worst that could happen is you help some noob with an answer, and stop a thread from starting to find out what a rom is!

I agree. I mean, congratulations on your stickied post - it's already helped me and a lot of others but isn't this a little extreme? It seems that you want to condense the entire forum into one thread. People would be searching within your thread rather than within the forum...
This thread is a decent idea and commendably well intentioned, but I tend to agree that the Wiki is the place for this.
However, this begs the question as to whether the Wiki is included in the standard search facility. If it's not, it may explain why some users claim to have searched but failed to find the answer. Equally, if it's not, perhaps it should be, if technically feasible.
The issue seems to be around the simplistic and repetitive nature of some queries. I see three main underling causes:
- People come here looking for help because they have exhausted other avenues, however basic those avenues may be. There is an inevitability to some people approaching this in a clumsy fashion and there isn't much we can do about it other then close the site or accept it. A little gentle education can help too - we all started somewhere and we have all probably made the same mistakes at times!
- Failure to search; this is inexcusable but inevitable and there isn't much we can do about it. No matter how accessible the information is made, if you are lazy, scared, in a hurry...or possibly just stupid, they will not find it
- Efficiency of the search tool. Can't comment overly, but it does sometimes seem like feast or famine in that one either gets too many hits to be useful or too few. Is there anything that can be done to make the search tool more intelligent, search more widely, or more specific about what it has found and where, e.g. 'this' from the Wiki, 'this' from the Forums, etc?

The first few times it is acceptable, but when the question has already been asked and answered, it gets boring for everyone, and just clogs up the forum with avoidable clutter.

Somewhere with info (such as the wiki) will at least reduce peoples time wasting...
I think this thread is a little too far, but there are alternative systems (the wiki for example) that will be easier to use...
you know there's also an encyclopedia at the bottom of the forum? Its a bit dated but has the fundamentals

No one notices that, and there is not much new information...
These threads are a great idea, but I think it would be a better idea to make a forum specifically for questions, and nothing BUT questions.
. . . with understanding development using Java for Android?
Do I start with Java books?
Where do I read about how to set up an Android development environment? I'm trying to read through everything at the Android Developers website, but I was hoping someone could point me towards better/more information.
I know this is a VERY n00b question, but in order to avoid asking any further n00b questions, I'd like to come to this party better equipped.
TIA -
Darryl

Do you know Java?
Thank you for the reply!!
That's where I'd like to get started. I know Android is a FULL OS written in Java, so a beginner is looking at the equivalent of Mt. Everest from the viewpoint of a new born just learning to walk, but, as I said, I'd like to start somewhere.
Advice for:
what texts to start with
texts that help provide a good foundation to address Android
texts that are the next step after beginning
how to properly build a Java IDE with Eclipse
Would probably be a good starting place.

Honestly, I'd start out PMing some of the devs in the Development forum... Cyanogen, Enomther, etc. I've PM'd Enomther before back in the G1 forum and he's super responsive...
Probably your best bet.

yes it is.
your first post here, amazingly its in the wrong section..also if you look closer the forums have a search feature, the term "compass" has 40 threads on it.
Most questions will belong in the ....drum roll...

A little less sarcasm while greeting our newcomers would be helpful to building and continuing our model of an open community. Let me try a different route.
Welcome to the xda community! Yes the compass driver is off by 90 degrees and is something our awesome devs are working on but it hasn't been high on the priority list I imagine. I find the navigation to work adequately until you stop at a light and then it freaks out because it doesn't know which way your facing. That and relying on skymaps and trying to find your way through the woods is where the compass will not be helpful at the moment.
General questions should be placed in the Android General forum and the search tools are unique and will take a second to get used to but will be helpful to find answers. Note that there are searches on the forum to find threads and then when you open a thread, you may have to search again to find posts within. Ductor also provided links to what you can find stickied at the top of each forum. That should help get you going in the right direction... just don't use the compass to get there. *ba dun crash*

While you are correct in the assumption of sarcasm, new members are great to the community and you never know who will be the next big dev so to speak..I think that we all know that every forum has its rules and its important to read them, the stickies and get familiar with how things are ran. With that said the OP did not do any of the above.
I have been a member here for a pretty good while, but have a fairly low post count as most info you may be looking for can be found without posting, hence less clutter and a much nicer forum.
It's cool and I understand what your saying. I hope you didn't take offense to what I said. I think some people get irritated with many who haven't stopped and read rules but we have to stop and think that not everyone understands the direction of how a forum operates. Yes... I know... it's 2010, they should know by now... but I was just saying to take a breath and point them in the right direction. If post #2 or #3 follows a trend, then course of action of pointing out their mistakes and rubbing their nose in their mess would be warranted... Post #1 is like a kid who hasn't spoken up in class all year and finally speaks but out of turn. Thank the kid for participating but let him know to raise his hand first.
I don't know, I just think the art of conversation gets lost when we become too jaded with social networks but who am I to try and change things now.
Thank you for all your reply first.
Since my Eng is not very good, and i expect HD2 is not general Android device, so i just post to here. i am very sorry.
as a member in XDA, i hope i can see the Android NAND version w/full fuction ASAP.
i like the HD2 hardware but not buy the WM.....

Apparently, that is the case.
Yeah, I believe it had to do with him not sharing it. I think it all started when CM started to announce and work on the official build and were wanting to use his kernel as a base/starting point but he wouldn't give it out? I don't know, I just remember something similar to that happening in the Offical CM topic.

do you have a link?
that doesn't make any sense, if CM actually wanted to do an official HD2 build everyone would benefit, doesn't make sense for him not to release his kernel source.

Im getting the same thing...Im looking to download the newest for my HD2 but i cannot enter that forum.
Can someone tell me if there is any and what possible damage can occur due to MDJ not sharing his source? Example: is any of our personal information at risk by this taking place (i.e. credit card numbers, e-mails, sms, phone records, etc)?
Thanks,
Aleks
Hope they are back soon

Weird. Haven't visited the android HD2 forums for a few weeks and to see MCCM back and MDJ gone is weird. But MCCM's builds work better for me anyway.

No it hasn't. Seems the issue has been addressed well enough and people are just voicing what's on their mind. The only excuse for this one being closed is it's a dupe thread.
Closing fair discussion never benefited anybody !

There has to be a reason why he refuses to share his code, if this is true, i would be really careful with those roms he created. think about it, everybody else shares their code (its a requirement) but when they asked him to share his, he disappears? I hope I am wrong...
It sucks that he's not around right now before this stuff went down he promised an update and i'm jonesing for one!
I've moved to another build, but don't like it as much.
I am a newbie to Android operating system. As many other newbies, I got a lot troubles and puzzles when using my android phone, recreating themes or modifying ROM, etc... Then I have to post a new thread on forum and waiting for an advice. Sometimes it takes a lot of time just for a easy bug fix.
Therefore, I wonder if some experienced android users can leave their gmail address so that newbies like me can add as buddies in g-talk in order to asking for advices in some cases.
Thanks.
Best advice I can give you is to start here reading the Noob bible, read read read, then once you are more familiar with the phone, I would join one of the developers personal website forums. The people in there can and will give you advice, you can look into EDT forum, TW etc. All these groups have a varying level of skilled people in each of their respective website forums. But, before launching over to one, you need to have some education, and understanding so you can ask useful questions.
Good luck............. android is a great platform

99% of the time, all the "easy bug fixes" that you're referring to have already been addressed and resolved. I have been at this a while and have yet to start a new thread because my questions have either already been asked/answered, or I just figure it out myself. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with people asking legit questions, but members starting new threads about common questions is a little irritating and shows a lack of effort in my opinion.
My bad - accidental repost.
Yeap I see, thanks a lot. ^^
if you need help feel free to pm me, no offense but i dont like leaving my email address around especially with everything i use it for. I generally check my XDA pms atleast once a day, keep in mind that i don't have time to walk you through everything step by step which is where the noob guide comes in. However i will always be willing to point you towards resources that will either instruct you on what to do unless its an incredibly difficult topic in which case ill do my best to asist.
Cheers
