Google Search (Enhanced) - What is it? Do we need it? - myTouch 3G, Magic General

So yeah, like the title says...
I'm curious about this "Google Search (Enhanced)" service that keeps starting itself. What is it? Do we need it?
I'm trying to give myself a zippier phone and have been tweaking things with AutoStarts and ES Task Managers Auto-Kill feature. I don't use the search bar for anything, so is it possible to disable it from trying to keep itself running?

How to kill apps not downloaded from market?

I keep trying to do search and keep getting errors, so I'm gonna take a chance and hope I don't get flamed I use advanced task killer, but it doesn't show the apps that I installed manually, IE not downloaded from market. Is there any convenient way to kill these apps?
They should appear just like the other apps from the market. Did you try refreshing it to see if they show up?
Hmm.. I don't see a refresh option in the menu. Only setting help and info. I thought there would be something in the setting tab, but I can't find anything

Try killing your task manager and opening up again. If the programs you installed outside of the market are running in the background then they will show up along with the others. Also, try another task killer.
Download and use autostarts in the market
Wow, I tried turning it off and on a few times and ATK finally found em. Thanks! Much appreciated, let's hope it keeps it up!

disable AT&T apps?

i google'd this but can't find anything on it and was wondering if the s3 is the first phone that allows users to disable at&t services without root. this is my first android device so i wouldn't know if that's true...
anyway, i have hotspots, navigator, messages, and updater. Carat is saying updater uses a lot of my battery, but that is the only one i can't disable in the application management menu in settings. however, i assume if i disable the other 3 then updater will have nothing to update and will consume less battery (hopefully).
has anyone tried to disable these programs with success, i.e. without it causing problems to your phone?
im not sure. but i did try to uninstall one and then it just showed up that it needed a update so i ended up redownloading the app because im so OCD about having updates not done

You go into the application manager and DISABLE the app. I have gotten rid of ALL the ATT bloatware this way. Works sort of like
Titanium Backup but you do not need the root. Great option.

This is actually one of the 'features' of ICS (being able to disable apps w/o needing root). It basically very similar to "freezing" apps in TiBackup if you have root. It's generally much safer than outright deleting an app since if you do find you need it you can always re-enable it.
Make sure you have "auto update" unchecked in Google play first. Go to manage apps in settings and then go to "all".
Disable the ones that you don't need which is prolly a lot. You can also hide them if you want. While in your app drawer hit the menu button and choose hide apps.

[Q] List of apps that can be uninstalled/disabled safely

Hi,
May i know what is the list of applications to uninstall/disable for SM-G900F (S5) ? Cause i see that there are a lot of default apps in it... and they seem pretty useless to me so i am not sure if uninstalling it might cause problem for the phone..
And this is a noob question, i see that 'Google search' uses the most data for my phone so i was wondering if i could stop/uninstall the feature.. o.o or if there are other ways to do it..
Thank you.

There are quite a few existing threads that answer all of your questions.
Search for "bloat" or "debloat" regarding apps safe to remove. Or just see what was removed in the description of a custom ROM e.g. the S5 Phoenix ROM.
And there have been threads on taming Google now to conserve battery and reduce data use. Look in my post history if a regular search doesn't easily find them for you.

[Q] 4.4.4 Can I prevent the stock Task Manager from killing Pandora?

Hey guys, I've searched for a while and hope I'm posting in the right forum. I am just looking for a way to keep my stock Task Manager from killing Pandora when I close all apps. I know 3rd party apps have an ignore list but I prefer to keep my stock app due to how well it's integrated. I'm running a rooted Verizon Galaxy S5 on 4.4.4 and have the xposed framework installed. I've looked for a module but couldn't find one. Any ideas? Thanks
Modifying permissions maybe?

Try the AppSettings Xposed module, there you can set Pandora to "resident" --> it won't get killed by android.
Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately it didn't help.
Just an update in case anyone else finds this thread looking for an answer. I also checked "insistent notifications" and forced "ongoing notifications" in hopes that it would prevent Pandora from being killed, no luck. I find this weird because iheartradio survives the "close all" with no changes needed. But iheartradio isn't Pandora.

did you do it for all app that belong to pandora? I use the "resident" function with my google now launcher, but I set both Google Search and the Launcher app itself to resident. otherwise it would get killed.
Still, i'm quite unsure what to do since you didn't give any details/sutations where Pandora would get killed.
Edit: forgive any typos. I'm on mobile.

My Places

How do I disable it? Every time I turn off location it comes up with a warning saying My Places need location on to work. Is there a way to totally disable My Places as I suspect it's draining my battery?
Install Package Disabler Pro from the Play Store and disable it.

Thanks for that. I keep seeing people using it. Does it actually noticeably improve battery life?
Yes... assuming you don't go mad and start disabling everything. Also, don't use its inbuilt "disable bloat" option. It is too severe.
There are threads here where people post their .xml files and you can see what they have disabled, or even import their settings. Everyone's choices will be different however.
It is easy to re-enable apps if you find that you have lost functionality, or your battery life gets worse rather than better.
Here are some apps that some people have disabled

Oops. I've just installed it and used the one touch option to disable all the bloatware. But I've gone and enabled what I need afterwards again. It's the system apps I don't have a clue about so I guess I will have to wait and see. Do you know if there is a list of commonly disabled apps that people have used anywhere?
Yes, there is at least one. I saw a thread two or so days ago, I have just have a quick search but cannot see it currently.
Everyone has a slightly different outlook however. I just disable Samsung stuff I have no use for watch manager stub etc and Facebook stuff. I disable Google Play Games and Movies.
I don't disable any Google framework or system stuff.
I use Nova and therefore disable Touchwiz Home and Easy Home. It's logical when you think about it. If you don't use S Health, disable it.
You can undo the disable bloatware option if you want to.
