Hi XDA,
I was browsing the web (On my mobile) and opened a page with a .gif
Then saved this .gif cause it was funny one.
But the moment i did that my browser crashed.. (Opera 8)
I did not think much of this at this time.
This same day i notice i keep having too re-input my passes..
Even just now on XDA i had to input my pass again twice..
First i thought maybe its the internet. But i checked all that..
Now im concerned it might be a virus. Maybe picked up from that .gif?

Maybe it's a cookies problem
check your browser's settings.
maybe clear all history and cookies.
Thank you.
Checked all that. And yet i had to log in again..
The strange thing is it remembers my username/pass i just have to keep logging in again..
I also notice that im being logged out periodicly..
And the fact that i had to relog into my Gmail is starting to concern me.
I have never had to do that before..
If its hard to determen the cause, i would like to know if resetting my mobile
to its factory settings in the settings tab truly formats my whole mobile.
And removes any possible malware or viruses..

Performing a hard-reset to factory settings,
would most likely remove any malware (assuming the malware has no way to write itself into the device ROM).
BUT -
if restore a backup you restore a backup - it might restore the malware as well (if the backup was created after the infection).
I don't think that someone made a .gif file which makes opera buggy. Maybe Opera crashed because it had problems showing the page. This could be the reason why Opera has problems.
Removing opera and installing it again could solve this error.
By hard-reset and back-up you mean two different things?
Factory reset looks like overwriting it with back-up could that backup be infected and contain the virus is what you mean?
Thank you very much for your quick responses Some03ne
Very much appreciate
Edit: Thank you too header2k
Thats also what i initially thought.
But still i have these passes errors which is suspicious..
Opera is buggy indeed. I have a similar problem, on certain sites it will jsut ask me to log in everytime I visit. Don't think it's related with the gif thing.

Yes, Hard-Reset and backup are two different things.
Backup - is backing up your data and files, so it could be restored later.
Hard-Reset - deletes all data and leaves the device only with the programs/files that are included in the ROM/Factory settings.
If you perform Hard-Reset you would lose all your data.
If you perform a backup (before hard resetting) you have a copy of your data and can restore it after Hard-Reset.
But -
your situation now is problematic - if you perform backup now - you most likely will copy the problematic file, and it will get back on the device when you restore this backup.
i've got that same thing just yesterday
all my passwords in opera are deleted
plus my wifi key is deleted
but i don't think it's a virus because my HD2 is still very stable

Hi, All
Had my touch about 3 weeks, everything has been great till now. Messaging (Email) suddenly stopped working, I can't open my email program, or text. It's just vanished. Any ideas? Tried reboot, (removed battery), even tried to restore with SPB which I installed yesterday and backed up. I'm new to this forum, but I know this is the best around for technical info. Thanks for any help.
Gary
Well, I can't imagine what caused it, but it sounds like you need to do a hard reset. That will get the device back to factory settings. You'll have to reload all of your stuff, first, and you'll want to backup your contacts.
When you're ready, while holding down the green and red buttons (Call and End), push the reset button with your stylus (it takes a bit of dexterity). You should be prompted to do a hard reset, and that should take care of the problem.
As for what caused it, i have no idea. Even if you could fix it somehow, you're still probably better off just reseting everything.
Thanks, Dave,
I guess I figured I would have to do that, but hoped I wouldn't. Between the SPB backup on my data card, and the customizations saved on my PC, I can get it back to where it was. I've spent hours and hours getting this thing exactly the way I wanted it, but that's life....
Gary
Sorry I missed this... may have been able to save you from hard reset. This happened to me once and if I reacall correctly it was an SD card issue. The cause... I had attachments going to the SD and the folder for the inbox disapeared. Why? No clue. Once I copied it back (from a backup) messaging started to work again.
There is another issue where the SD looks like it has been corrupted. All of the folder name look wacky and some are missing. I cant remember the exact sequence of events in my case but since deselecting "When available, use this storage card to store attachments" I have not had seen either problem.
fyi for the future.
Thanks for the info, SHWA311. I will check out that card issue. I did the hard reset, luckily had all my hacks and downloads saved, just took me a couple of hours to re-input my contacts. I tried everything to save them, but my only SPB backup was made after the problem, only didn't realize it.

you didn't have to hard reset... could have just deleted inbox folder on your sd card and mail/text program would start working again. i had the same issue before (as have many others).
Thanks varunb007,
I will file that under my "relax and wait for some more responses" memory bank!~

I'll just save my swearing of HTC programmers for later, for now I'll just cut to the chase:
One of my albums that I've synced by using WMP didn't have a thumbnail visible in sence Music Player. I had the .jpg picture for it, but it wouldn't work (I'm assuming because the album was a 2 part one, CD1 and CD2). So I've simply copied the .JPG to both the folders and renamed it ~hTC_Albumname.jpg
It was quite a long name but there should not have been any problems since their names were different (the second one had CD2 in the end).
Right after I've done that I went to the sence player and clicked play on the album. Then SENSE crashed and now, even after soft reset it can't start!
I've deleted all of my .mp3 files from /Storage Card/Music
I've deleted all Temp files by hand and via ClearTemp
I've performed soft reset a dozen times
I've tried deleting the Applicaton Data/HTC/AudioManager_Eng but the .vol file is used by a service and can't be deleted.
How do I proceed to restore Sence? I don't want to perform a hard reset as I have extreme amounts of settings in comparison to small amounts of time.
Any suggestion on this matter is greatly appreciated
I have really no idea how to solve this, as a matter of fact I'm not quitte shure if I understand what is happening here.
But my first thought was: to eliminate if your problem comes from your SD-card or not, why not remove it and start your device without it?
Hope this may be of help to a solution.
Goodluck,
Fred
When you say sense can't restart. Do you mean that it tries to start and then crashes or it that it doesn't bother to start at all. If it is the former; do you get any kind of error message? If the latter; have you gone to your today settings and made sure sense is still enabled?

It tries to start normally but it doesn't, it retries a few times and then just writes a message: Unable to start sence, tap here to try again. Of course the tapping is to no avail. I will try to format my SD card tomorrow to see if it does any good... Damn what damage a little .jpg can do...
might be time for a hard reset.

I highly doubt formatting the SD will have any impact. It sounds like the registry was somehow corrupted. I've also read about the "Unable to start sense" error happening to people after they sync their phone.
I have another question though. What ROM are you using?
Unfortunately my friend, like posted you may have to hard reset. Occasionally when trying a new modification (something in Sense for example) my Sense gets broken. It will try to start a few times then I would get that message, to date I have found no solution to fixing Sense if it won't start so I am forced to hard reset. Sorry I wish there was another option. If someone knows please chime in
Many times when sense gets "broken" it's due to a corrupted file or registry entry. This can happen from a bad cab install to a messed up tweak. Also, some custom roms that are optimized for speed have modified buffering so a crash at an unlucky time may cause file and registry corruption that breaks sense. If you can pinpoint where the problem occurred, then a fix may be possible without a hard reset.
Although a hard reset WILL do the job, I like to think of it as an absolute last resort.
Don't know if you have CHT installed, but I avoided a hard reset by re-installing CHT when having the same problem with sense. Something I did corrupted a CHT file I am guessing. Also, I could not import my saved CHT Editor settings, as sense would not start after import. Just skipped import and was back to normal.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try this immediately. I've already started looking into custom roms/radios. I'm currently using stock 1.66 with a 2.07 radio.
EDIT: Thank you so very much, it worked!! I'm guessing that I've overlooked tha fact that on one level of CHT I had the media player plugin. I'm guessing my messing around didn't brake sense's media player but the homescreen CHT media player plugin!
You are most welcome.
I have Win Mobile 6 pro and was working perfect.
Code:
The file xxx cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted cerfificate, or one of its components cannot be found. If the problem persists, try reinstalling or restoring this file.
Yesterday phone was on charging and it's showing the S2U2 charging and I picked up and unlocked and it started showing this error on running any software and even not running startup programs and services. Even it's not getting phone calls except SMS.
I didn't changed/configured or installed any software or any configuration in it for about a month and no possibility of doing anything wrong. It just created this problem in my hands in a minute.
I searched around forum and already tried two of the registry fixes but nothing.
I can hard reset easily but I don't want to loose my Contacts/Address book. If there can be possibility to backup contacts I'll Hard Reset it. I can connect through Active Sync and I can edit registry through CERegEditor.

you need to install SdkCerts to sign the file/s you're using to make it/them eligible to be installed on the device. It's just like a consent from the developers for their OEM softwares to their users. To make the device accepts the file/s, the SDKCert have to be installed on the device for key matching purposes....
used PIM Backup to backup/restore the Personal information of the Pocket PC like Contacts, Appointments, Tasks etc.
Thanks for your attention and reply.
One thing I want to tell you, it just started suddenly and before this problem all programs are running smoothly without any signing etc. Currently it's running only few software i.e. File Explorer, Solitaire and few more and it's not shows error even in Calculator, Contacts and other built-in programs.
I can't understand wht's the difference in Calculator and Solitaire one is running other not.

This indicates that there is one of the files(dll file) needed for the process of loading the program is gone (may be erased) ! My advice, hard reset your device back to factory default settings but first make a backup
Now that is the point, how can I make backup. I only need contacts nothing else.
It's getting worse day by day, now it's not even starting, stuck at T-Mobile splash and stays there. I tried taking out SD card, SIM etc. but I couldn't able to boot it.

Hakim sb, thanks for your suggestion. That's already in consideration but 1st I want to have backup of address book.
Do you know way to get backup of address book.
maybe you need to see this to be backing up address book http://www.godswmobile.com/how-to-transfer-contacts-for-windows-mobile-phone.html
Thanx again for you assistance. Earlier before making any registry changes through PC it was atleast starting and accessible through PC and I had chance to copy contacts file wherever it's located but now it's not starting at all, hangs at T-Mobile splash screen.
Is there any way to read memory and copy/backup contacts file through PC or any other way.
It's my birthday and the day of a big problem. So please assist ;-)
Been transfering movie files from PC to Tab via USB/MTP. The process was going fine until the last file to be copied. Then Tab lost connection. Reconnected the cable. Tried to copy the last file. Then Tab hung. Absolutely.
I disconnected USB cable and rebooted the TAB. It showed the Samsung animation, then "samsung" title, some gargabe at the bottom of the screen and .. that last forever.
Well, rebooted once again. Same situation, but screem garbage moved to top.
Well, 3rd reboot and .. whoa, eventually it booted!
But ... it asked me to introduce myself (e.g. enter e-mail, ...) and enter Google prefeences (just like with a fresh new tab). Skipped it (Hacker's keyboard was already not working - couldn't type in).
Then the desktop arrived. My God, it's absolutely brand new. All my settings and icons disappeared.
Went to Applications - they all seem to survive. But don't work. Almost all of them crash when you start them. Some very simple and built-in apps work though.
The Contacts disappear as well. Just like E-mail.
Remember I started this message with that I was transferring files? Well, they're not visible. Even their new folder is missing. But the storage is used exactly to the size of those files. All 10Gb. I tried to delete its parent folder (say, "/sdcard/Movies"). Free storage barely changed (only for the size of existing files).
Well, it's ruined. My lovely and so customized Tab. Damn.
So the very dumb questions are:
- What's that? Broken filesystem? How came? How to check/fix?
- How to save app settings (that's ALOT, include data for my kids' paid games)?
- Where Touch Wiz and other settings actually stored? I suspect there must be a system database (saw an error from "SQlite" when FBReader crashed).
Well, I could wipe everything, but not sure it would solve the filesystem problem and would take muuuuuuuuch time. And we don't have ICS rolled out for Russia yet, so that would be a very time wasting process.
p.s. Titanium backup doesn't start too. Moreover, everytime I install something it crashes again ;-)
You might try setting up your gmail account, the initial thing that you skipped. I'm just guessing, but perhaps you need the account active to use apps that might be linked to your account on the market.
Also, again, this is just a guess, but if your movies are DRM protected, is it possible you can't access because it thinks you are a different user?
Just some thoughts. Quite possibly useless, but maybe worth a shot. Good luck!
Later,
Jason
Go to settings/ apps and force stop Samsung Media Scanner... Worked on mine a while back, hopefully that will fix the problem for you... Good luck!

Something very similar happened to me when I was trying to watch a movie off of an sd card with the adapter. I ended up having to re-flash a stock image through Odin and re tweak everything (Rom, re-download apps...everything. Sucks that I lost all my progress in games etc. but it made me re-evaluate what apps I really used and needed so now it's running faster and smoother than ever. I even decided against using pershoot's overclocking kernel (for now) as everything feels so fresh and so clean, and it seems unnecessary.

Something got corrupted. It could have been app databases like you suggest. Sounds pretty reasonable. I hate to say it but you may want to hard reset and see if the issue persist. If it does persist after a hard reset then you have a defective device
Do you have a nandroid backup of your setup?
I'm rooted on stock N910VVRU2BPA1 with the Emotion-TW-5.1.1-nightly-r21-RC1-SM-N910P Kernel
I've been reporting that KingoRoot corrupted my phone. The symptoms were swipes lags, typing lag delays, Wi-Fi lags before it turns on and more problems. I fixed the performance problems and it is too good to be true. I went through a lot of trial and error but here is a synopsis of what I did.
I used Root Browser to change the name of every file and folder inside the efs folder. I just added a 1 to the end of the names so I could revert back if needed.
I rebooted the phone, went back to check the efs folder and it had regenerated everything I needed to keep. And it didn't load the junk files. The phone runs like it's using AdAway on steroids. give it a few minutes and it will rebuild the advertising host files. But the best part is it didn't load the spyware left behind by KingoRoot and KingRoot. That keyboard lag was probably spyware recording keystrokes and the lags navigating were probably due to conflicts between the Google host file and the spyware. I don't know for sure but Now, Even the ESPN website loads fast on Chrome. I just did this today so I'm still testing but I haven't got a phone solicitation since I've done this. I don't know if it's a side effect or what. But that would be great
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEXT: I found a fix for the Wi-Fi lag turning on and the phone forgetting the Wi-Fi password. I went to esf/carrier/HiddenMenu and changed it from off to on. Then I used the app Phone Info Samsung to do a RTN reset from Secret Codes menu. My Wi-Fi is back to normal.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I actually did the Wi-Fi fix first, then after I seen it had corrected that problem I Odin back to N910VVRU2BPA1 re-rooted, Restored my TWRP backup data then I did what I'm calling the SPYWARE FIX.
But the best part is it didn't load the spyware left behind by KingoRoot and KingRoot. That keyboard lag was probably spyware recording keystrokes and the lags navigating were probably due to conflicts between the Google host file and the spyware.

Is there any evidence that Kingoroot installed spyware? I used it and haven't experienced any of the issues you've reported.
Very nice! Is this in relation to and correct your DM-Verification problem?
Also do you know what files do not need to be in that folder/subfolders? It looks like there is a bunch of junk in mine, especially the files with very long alpha-numeric strings, but I am not that familiar with how the folder works and what may not need to be there.
What is the RTN fix for WiFi? I see it listed in the app, but not sure what it will reset.
I've been using a Note 4 Dev Edition for the past year, rooted and running MOROM. My issue is that the WiFi connection will just disconnect for no reason and it will not show any WiFi devices unless I turn it off and then back on. I have to do this a few times a day.

I did a test and even KingRoot puts junk in the efs folder. KingoRoot is what caused my DM Verification failure.
your mileage may vary
Are there any specific files that either KR or KoR place in the EFS folder? I'm not familiar enough with the folder and what should or shouldn't be in there, it looks fairly junked up on my device, but then again all the files I have in there could be legit and needed.
Maybe we could all contribute to am EFS Cleanup utility to prevent the spyware mess of this convoluted rooting process? Haha.

This has been the best day ever as far as performance. I don't know what it was but I deleted something that was really slowing the phone down. I started with a phone that I was going to crush then make a warranty claim because it was operating so poorly. I don't need to do that now. For the record, I call some Google and Verizon software " Spyware " it was not just the rooting process. It would be interesting to find out what was in those junk files but I have seen no adverse effect by renaming them. Then after I seen they had been regenerated I made a backup copy then I deleted them.
I have went ahead and used this method of renaming all files and folders inside of EFS, and it regenerated most of the folders and everything, the most marked difference was inside the SFS folder, in my old renamed folder I had about 25 files with very long alpha-numeric strings, now I only have two files in there. Can I, after backing up just in case, get rid of all of the files/folders with the 1 at the end? Will leaving them in there do anything like slightly increase RAM use, or are they just there but dormant?

I wonder how much space is allowed in the efs partition. I ASSUME my TWRP backup could restore it if needed. Also I made a copy of the 1,'s then deleted them. I see no reason to look back. Life is good.
Do you feel the speed? I have re-deleted everything inside the efs folder several times. Every time it regenerates.
EDIT: Another benefit I,ve noticed is the time of the post is correct now on XDA before It always would show the wrong time for a post.
Hard to say it's not placebo, but actions on the phone actually feel a bit faster, for instance the animation for unlocking the phone seems to go at a quicker speed and an already slightly laggy game itself, Star Wars Heroes, seems to run somewhat better now.

So when doing the RTN Reset, you're phone is reset (like doing a factory reset) and you have to set up all your info, settings and apps in it again? If so, I would hold off doing that, as that would take me a lot of time. But I could still try the ESF folder trick and see if that helps. Since I have the Dev Edition, it is rooted without those King apps, so probably no spyware on it.

If so, I would hold off doing that, as that would take me a lot of time. But I could still try the ESF folder trick and see if that helps. Since I have the Dev Edition, it is rooted without those King apps, so probably no spyware on it.

yes it is a factory restore but you can save a lot of time with the TWRP data backup. If you're not having any Wi-Fi problems I think I'd skip it

The only WiFi issue I have is that the phone will lose WiFi connectivity a few times a day and I have toggle it on and off. But the phone has done it on every ROM that I have tried, so it could be an issue with the hardware itself.
I did edit all the files and folders in the efs, and the phone is working a bit smoother. Before, the unlock screen was always slow and stuttering, but now it is smooth and fast.

I don't even know why any of this is working but it is. Use your own discretion.
After some more testing I had to undo the renaming of a few of the files and place them back in their original folders to fix VOLTE/Wifi Calling/Bluetooth that stopped working, can't find any other issues so far though.

It would be good to have a list but I've fixed two phones that I was ready to trash just by deleting everything. Last year I had Verizon remove HD calling from my account because my calls were more distorted with HD calling. I have a separate Google number and it works on Wi-Fi better than my Verizon number.
Although now with the Spyware fix my Verizon calls are clearer. And This is day three without a solicitation call. UNREAL
Nice! Is there a way to get VOLTE without turning on the HD Calling function? With it turned off my phone calls go to 1x mode and I can't do any data related functions while on the phone. Maybe something is messed up on my end configuration wise that only allows that functionality with it turned on?
Second note anyone have any idea what all the files in the SFS folder are? I had almost 20, now down to 4 and everything is working as it should.
