hi, i have had an unusual issue in that the GPS on the device does not work any more, it did before around 2 weeks ago when i used google maps with the compass working as well.
i have tried soft resets and to check the com ports (i am unsure of the defaults for com port, is it 0?) and have tried to set them manually and also to allow the device to automatically set them. The digital compass has allways been working.
i have installed a fue gps applications recently, since i last used the gps successfully, and have noticed the gps not working in any of these and then not working in the pre-installed applications;
(installed in descending order)
-iGO 8
-GPS sport computer
-wifi fo fum 2
-GPS speedo
-hd speedo
-gps cycle computer
i have uninstalled these since and the GPS still is not being picked up in the digital compass application and google maps (both the preinstalled apps on the original ROM out the box, and were working with gps around 2 weeks back).
i have made sure i am always in clear sight of the sky, but no prevail their.
if some one could please help me on what to do to regain the functionality of the gps again, i would be great full.
p.s. has anyone else had this issue or a similar one?
Try downloading something with setelite tracker. GCZII is such application (good for geocaching btw).
Sometimes, the GPS has wrong satellite data. You will see (on the satellite tracker) it can receive some signal, but the satellites will not show above you, but let's say all to the north.
Go to start/tools and run QickGPS and download new data. That should help. It will download current data via internet. But it may help not. Sometimes bad data on these servers are the source of the problem.
So next thing you can try is use file explorer and go to Temp folder. There is file xtra.bin. That's where the data are stored. Try to remove it and soft reset. Try running your GPS without the file. It will take some time to fix (up to 5 minutes), but it should work.
If that does not help, QuickGPS will get the file back. I had problems like this on X1 .. usually something helped, either refreshing, or removing the file. On HD2 I needed it once, and refreshing the data using QuickGPS helped.
I'd suggest to try htc's own gpstool and see if you get anything at all on com4. search the forum for htc debug tools, the exe is in that package. And...disable quickgps and delete xtra.bin from \temp
Nice application .. I was looking for something like that ! Thanks !
thanks for the replies.
sofar i tried the qgps file removal with out success.
i have aso found something else out thats concerning, thats in igo 8 when i run a auto detect scan for gps device it come back saying their is no gps device.
it also seems to be the case when i ran gczll and the htc-gps-tool.
so i think that the gps driver? or device is the root of the issue?
hope this helps with the suggestions on how to resolve the issue?
Thanks for the helping again.
Aslo check settings/external gps.
First tab (programs) should be: COM4
Second tab (Hardware) should be: None, and 4800 (or anything I guess).
Third tab (Access) should be: Yes, manage GPS automatically

You're welcome ;-)
Have you installed any "tweakers" like BsB Tweaks, HD2Tweaks or similar? Have you messed around in the registry with drivers and such? I assume you didnt see any gpsdata at all on port com4 using the htcgpstool, what exactly happened when you opened com4?
Imho, if the above post by Sid doesn't do the trick, the easiest way out is probably a hardreset.
[edit]
what rom are you on, stock or custom, and have you never been able to use the gps or did this happen after a while, perhaps after you installed an app or something?
its stock rom, i havent ventured into cooked roms yet. (reading into it, getting a understanding of it all over last 2-3 days)
haven't messed around with the registy of bsb and dont have htctweaks (not sure on how to do that yet)
nothing happens when i run the htcgpstools, on com 4, same as it does nothing on any other application. it just continues to look (for a long time) or says no gps (like in igo 8).
im thinking that hard reset my be the best option as well.
could something have happened to the radio and broken down the communications of the gps device? (im not a expert, just a theory?)
and just on a cooked rom question.
i wanted a rom that has copilot removed and the full ram enabled, and just to include the performance update drivers (i have adk 1 runtime atm that improves the jitteriness) and other updates that hot fixes have done. but i want to keep stuff like animated weather etc.
from what i have seen it looks like dutty is the man for this type of rom?
could you recommend a cooked rom for a first timer/noobie?
Thanks.
I had a similer problem on my Touch Diamond.
Try switching off.... take the battery out for 1 hour, reinsert battery then turn on. I think that the GPS locked up.
Good luck

Hmm, you might be right. I still believe your best shot is a HR...
OK well did a hard reset and that has done the trick.
The GPS works and locks with in 10seconds from my window so working brilliant again.
Thanks for all the suggestions and the time taken to help out.
Hi all,
I am new to the android OS, got my galaxy s a week ago.
I still keep my HD2 and to be honest I may sell the galaxy due to the poor gps reception and keep the hd2 for the next year.
The other thing I do not like is the fact that I cannot program the buttons behaviour.
Any way my question is, is it possible to disable the build in gps and use an external Bluetooth GPS Receiver?
The gps on my hd2 is miles, miles better.
I dont think its possible in this version of android. There is no way to tell the app to use the external gps instead of the internal one.
All we can hope for is a fix from Samsung.

it doesnot support such a basic thing...

GPS won't start
Hello, I am experiencing an issue with my phone and I was wondering if anyone knows a solution.
Basically the GPS receiver won't turn on when an application requests it, so it won't get any location information (the gps notification icon doesn't appear at all). This is definitely a software issue, because if you go to the settings menu and keep fiddling with the location settings (gps on<->off, wireless on<->off) at some point it WILL turn on and work correctly (and the gps icon appears), but randomly afterwards it will go back to not starting up again and you have to go back to the settings menu.
Is there a workaround for this? I'm hoping that a firmware update will fix it, but in the meantime is there anything that can be done? (I'd prefer to wait for the official firmware before flashing it).
Not really a fix but Extended Controls can make a switch on your home screen that will flip the gps function on and off, that will save some time if you have to go into that menu a lot.

I can confirm the same issue, rumour is that the upcoming firmware is going to improve the GPS a lot.
You can also use the 'Power Control' Widget that comes with the device.
Here you can turn On/Off a number of items, one being GPS.
I had this issue but it's just a case of going into settings and toggling the gps off and on again.

Good to know about the GPS on/off switch.
I was always rebooting my phone to get the GPS back to work.
There is an option in the secret GPS menu where you can set it to cold start, instead of hot start. Fixed it for me.

Bluetooth External GPS
Hey guys. I wanted to know if we can 'natively' from within Android 2.1 / Samsung Galaxy S use an external bluetooth gps...
In the bluetooth menu I can conenct to the TomTom bluetooth gps module but it can't be paired...
however after some digging I found this app:
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.googoo-android-btgps-AtDE.aspx
It does what it says. I get satellites straight away.
Now one big big problem with this app is that it closes as soon as I try and open another app by pressing the home button or even holding down the home button to switch between apps...
when the app closes it ends the connection between the TomTom bluetooth gps module meaning by the time a satnav app has opened the message box pops up and says 'do you want to enable gps'
why does this app close when you try open another app? No other apps like Asphalt etc close like this...
is there a way to use the external gps?
many thanks
From my limited understanding, no it's not possible. I don't know why, but Android has been a bit slow on the uptake for Bluetooth.
It's taken to FroYo to actually get Bluetooth Hands Free dialling - we'll see how good Google is in interpreting what you say to it, so far, it hasn't been successful for me on the phone itself let alone Bluetooth.
With regards Bluetooth GPS, I understand that it isn't possible. There would at least have to be some kind of underlying interface to overrule the internal GPS and feed the Bluetooth GPS information into the OS in place.
I want it to be possible, then we wouldn't care so much about broken GPS's.

Another GPS fix
Hey guy give this a try and let me know if it works for you.
http://theandroidrevolution.blogspot.com/2010/07/android-tips-tricks-samsung-galaxy-s.html
working like a charm, faster fix and i can actually use the GPS while driving (EU)
Isn't this like turng skyhook on?
Ie ,..whilst locki it uses wifi to identify where u are?
this fix it seems very accurate in Maps, whereas all other "fixes" did not work for me.
i don't notice anything different in GPS tester (i still hardly get any satellites if any) but in Maps my position seems to be very accurate....i'm just inside in my flat, but all other fixes never helped me before even in this situation.
Hello
Thanks for your suggestion for a GPS fix
Immediate I can not see the big difference in standard configuration and the change which you refer to.
I still have a unsettled GPS fix when I use Google maps.
However, I think I can see a slight improvement in the Google navigation. Now I remain almost always in the correct lane.
I use (default) I9000XXJF3
I've read that a newer version should resolve the GPS "problem", but is it possible to change the parameters of GPS I9000XXJF3 match the parameters of the new versions. ?
And just one question more.
If I close the GPS from the phone to calculate my position after mobile mast or WIFI.
How do I get it to find my location by WIFI.?
Hope for a response.
Thanks
Herman
This fix gives an instant , i mean instant gps fix with a clear sky.
on gps test gets 8-9 satellite now , when previously i could max get 1-2, that too not connect.
thanks a ton for this.
outside this fix i also had operation mode as ms based and had skyhook on.
I found this suggested fix a few hours back as well and have been trying it out.
I didn't get much better results from it to start out with but having played the accuracy setting I've found putting this up to 150 seems to make a big difference. Once I made this change GPS Test seems to show that the Galaxy is a bit less picky about the signal strength it needs before making a lock.
I've not gone any further in testing accuracy numbers beyond 5, 20 (the default I believe) 50 and 150. It might be worth trying other values.
Hi, people,
Just to let you know that I have fixed my gps issue by installing this app called "gps booster" from the market.
I have always believed that the gps issue was caused by hardware and given up on fixing it.
However, for the last resort, I tried this app and what do you know, it fixed it!!
On average, it takes less than a minute to get a solid lock.
Now, I know that sometimes, you get a fast random locks but I have used this app over a month now and every single time, I get a fast lock, so this is not a random case. I have tried this in different regions too.
Also, I have recommended this to numerous friends who were experiencing bad gps as well, and they all have told me that the problem has gone after installing this app.
I would like to know if this is actually a fix for all sgs out there.
There is a trial version for free, so if you are experiencing a bad gps, why not try it and leave a comment.
It worked for me and all of my friends so hopefully, it will work for ya.
After getting few comments, we can find out if the gps issue is software or hardware problem.
I sincerely hope it's software issue so it can get fixed in later firmware.
Thanks
I've been using GPS Booster (paid) for a few weeks and it has definitely improved the GPS. After installing, it found more satellites and got a faster lock.
But accuracy and tracking is still a problem. The accuracy is a bit better but I still end up shouting to the phone "I'm over here! I'm over here!". Maintaining a lock when I'm walking, no problem. Maintaining a lock when I'm driving, forgetabouit. Out of all the "fixes" I've tried (minus the hardware fix) GPS Booster has had the most positive effect (but it's still no where as good as my old Touch HD).
are you using standalone gps app?
I'm using Navigon currently, and it tracks pretty good when I'm driving.
It does sometimes lose signal for a while but it rarely happens.
I'm just using Google Maps/Navigation. Maybe 3rd party apps are better optimised at maintaining a lock.
If your phone is set to use AGPS and uses the best pool data then i doubt if this app can do any better .
All its doing is using the AGPS in a manner that boosts the signal location by using networks location as well as GPS .
jje
Is AGPS the same as "Use Wireless Networks"? I actually get better results when I disable "Use Wireless Networks" and use Cold Start. If I enable "Use Wireless Networks" the accuracy is ridiculously bad.

my gps works good with google maps , if i turn "use wireless netowrks " on .
GPS booster noticably improves the GPS for me aswell. I do not use AGPS so I don't think it only affects AGPS.
I use this combined with TrackerBooster, and with those two, my GPS is quite close to perfect. It very rarely deviates more than 5m.
Without them, my GPS is still not horrible but definately less accurate and losing locks more often (with them, extremely rare to happen).
A-GPS picks up wireless/network settings .

I was thinking the same, how can a magical app fix a hardware defect. Placebo effect?
At first I thought it might be a placebo effect, but I have been getting satellite locks in places where there use to be none. It could be a coincidence that the day I installed GPS Booster is also the day the satellites in the sky became stronger or closer. I don't think it has "fixed" the GPS issue, but it has made the GPS useable (for me at least).
I've read that GPS Booster is a rip-off of FasterFix http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=825717
I had FasterFix installed for a week, first adjusted to UK then Europe, and did not see any improvement.
This app must be using some kind of magic or witchcraft or VOODOO.

No, I'm not using any AGPS. (wifi + 3g turned off)
And it still gets a fast lock.
Why don't you try this app and see it for yourself?
you can tell us if it worked or not.
Looking at the comments, it seems that it's working for people

I thought it was a hardware defect as well but now I'm not too sure.
For example, many users reported improved gps with JM8 firmware
and also I've found a thread which says installing OCLF lagfix fixed their gps.
In both cases, it's got something to do with software.
Wat have you got to lose? Try the app, see it for yourself and let us know!
Who knows, it might fix your gps

NOT true.
App only gets activated when you turn on gps.
Do a bit of research before making an absurd comment.
Interested but 3 times
Seems like an interesting app to try but given the skeptics, it seems like 3 runs is a little lite to make a conclusion. I'll likely still try it but if you can't make a solid conclusion, why buy?

Yeah ok there is a on/off switch in the app. So what? What can it do? I think it only keeps the GPS on when the screen is off an you are in google maps. This is useful to avoid posts such as this one:

I certainly won't pay for this app without knowing what it does. This is trap, don't buy it. If it worked the trick would be well known and it would be free.

I installed the lite version. No change. Uninstall. Thanks for loosing my time with yet an other baseless GPS fix.
Tried it.
I tried it too. I near as I could tell I had horrible GPS without and still horrible GPS with. Never did get a fix even when it saw 6-8 sats... I then went and changed to cold start on the gps application settings and all was OK for the moment(*#3214789650#).
I just re downloaded and tryed again - back to no sats/no fix (though I am inside now). Well uninstalled again and still no sats/no fix so lets just say inconclusive so far and I think my 3 starts are up...

i can't figure out why it's not working, but my wife really needs gps. are there any fixes?

Try GPSInfo. I used to recommend GPS App (has Bing location), but now that is paid. GPSInfo gives you info about:
- GPS State
- Mode
- Accuracy (H/V)
- Course
If GPS State doesn't state "GPS Started", you have a HW problem.

It should say "Full GPS mode, satellites data" when fully working.
Make sure you turn off ALL data connections, you waited at least 10 minutes under a clouded sky and you are not in (or very near to a building) You do need to see the sky to get satellites.
If after 10-15 minutes under a clear sky you still see "A-GPS Mode" your hw may be affected
LE: A possible cause I can think of would be wrong drivers/firmware issue. As a possible way to fix that you can try flashing a stock rom or a custom rom. Normally I caution people away from custom roms as I've seen several "stuck at boot/samsung logo" through out the forum, all tied to custom roms. A stock rom is the firmware meant for your phone and even if you start from scratch at least you know it's the right thing for your phone. If you want to try that, see the post in my signature.
even with the 7720 update through zune, i had this issue.
i did revert back to stock, turn location off, then did the updates. all the way to 8773, and the gps would lock after a few minutes outside.
however, while driving, with the garmin app, all of a sudden my "vehicle" went shooting about a 100 yards off the road, then it never was right the rest of the trip.
so the gps seems to just be working intermittently, or whenever it feels like it..

Considering 8773 (Tango) was not yet officially released/tested for Focus, I need to ask: is your phone a Focus (i917)? If so, it might explain some if the issues you're having. I would suggest staying with stock 8107 for the moment, but ultimately it is your choice. Also, make sure the phone's drivers are updated properly, 'cause if they don't, what you're going to get is issues...
like i said though, it was the same deal from 7720 on up with the updates from zune. i'm going to try to to revert back to 7720 and install the samsung drivers for mango cab that i have.
GPS
Had similar GPS problems on Focus 1.3, tried different ROMs, etc. Only decent fixes I've found are pulling the battery out for ~30 minutes and turning on find my phone in settings. Not sure why battery thing works, but have seen the same suggestion for a lot of other phones.
Problem is my fixes have been temporary; GPS works for a while, then gets flaky again in a few days, even after reflashing.
Other Samsung phones that came out around the same time as orig Focus w/ similar HW specs had people tearing their hair out with GPS problems (Captivate, Galaxy S). Unfortunately, general consensus in Captivate forum seems to be problem is 75% hardware. Those guys tried endless SW / OS tweaks; some helped a little. Unlocked mine to try to find similar tweaks, but haven't solved the problem yet
I've played Ingress for several months. One thing I do daily is recharging 20~30 portals during my commute by bus -- open Ingress after getting on a bus, waiting for the GPS to get fix, and collect XMs and recharge.
However, in the recent one or two months, my phone's not able to get me GPS fix near my home -- even on a square. GPS status shows many sats in yellow, but none becomes green. Rebooting the phone doesn't solve it.
When I get to another place, two or three kms from my home, my phone still can't get fix. What's strange is, if I reboot my phone there, and try GPS again, it usually gets instant fix.
Also, I can always get instant fix anywhere near my working place.
I have two questions:
1. Which of the software parts affects GPS performance? I switched among multiple ROMs during these months, but I should be always on cloudyfa's KK baseband.
2. Anyone else has encountered the situation that you stand on a square on a not-so-cloudy day, with no high building around, 24 sats in sight, but your phone just can't connect to any? Has anyone solved it? How?

Thank you! Good video. I will try it after having tried all software ways.
Which properties in build.prop affects GPS performance? I'd like to check them first.
Also, try TopNTP app before opening up the phone.
I've been through a few smartphones and running various ROMs on each, here's my observation.
a. If the phone's gps takes long time but eventually locked then those apps mentioned above do help.
b. If the phone's gps take long time and never locked then those apps above are useless, they won't do a thing.
My advice 1: restart the phone and see the gps gets locked reasonable fast, if not
My advice 2: changing ROM. Do focus on firmware first before touching hardware.
Long time means 15' or more.
