Pcworld sucks, and so does the article. The guy says the only 4g phone is the evo. Also, doesn't mention anything about clear planning to get into lte as well. The board members resigned for antitrust issues and so they can get other investors on board.
let it die, and quit charging me the extra $10 a month.
Ok...so what does that mean for us who own a Evo?? No 4g?
If they switch to LTE will the EVO work with LTE?
No.....By the time they get LTE up and running....the evo will be obsolete and another phone with reign supreme......with LTE on board.
we will still have 4G coverage........im sure they had a contract in place for the use of their towers......comapnies just cant pull out of things such as this.
If this is the end of WiMAX then I'm getting out of my contract without the ETA. Sprint promised me 4G in my area prior to me signing up for this bull**** by the end of the year. If that ain't happening - bye bye Sprint hello Criket. Sick of this crap anyway.

Spot on.
Yeah, to this PCWorld guy the Samsung EPIC 4G must not exist. All this was about, was avioding an Antitrust issue, nothing more. Its not the death of WiMax or with Sprint & Clear using it.
How do you people get suckered by this crap from a guy who doesn't even have his information right? Com'on.

Thats true I guess... I mean there is no definitive answer as to what exactly they are doing. I haven't seen Sprint stop rolling out their 4G so maybe its just bollox. I think they would have announced it to their customers by now.

I did see another article earlier last month about Sprint exec's resigning from Clearwire. So the PCworld article is a little late...
That sucks, my area still doesn't have 4G, does this mean we never will?

Hopefully not... I was supposed to get 4G in my area by the end of the year. This just sucks total ass.
Wimax has been just a transitional technology from the start. It was a great idea initially, but took too long to implement and LTE is the future. Sprint WILL utilize LTE in the future, and our precious EVOs will be long forgotten by then anyway. I feel bad for anyone that was in the longhaul for CLWR since their IPO.
If you are reading this, your gay.
haha, Don't believe everything you read.

bender u have no idea what you are talking about... just keep following verizons bs. There are over 500 wimax networks world wide. wimax isnt going anywhere
Clear has stated that they have begun lte trials, sprint has stated that they will upgrade when they feel they can justify the costs, and further stated that even after they begin supporting lte they will continue to support wimax, and there have been several instances where various representatives have stated sprint is conducting trials for voice+data on wimax so it may well replace the 1xrtt/evdo rev.a standard they are using now, its also been stated that the initial differences in wimax and lte was not hardware but software and it is possible to update wimax compatible devices to run on lte but i doubt they mean at lte speeds, the way they said it seemed to hint that it was more of a work around, on top of that japan is testing the next wimax standard which has a theoretical limit of 300Mb and they are barely testing at around 54Mb, and as for the whole resigning thing, they stated that due to some changes in law dan hessey and others would resign in the interest of both company's and that both sides discussed it thoroughly, but they keep most of the controlling interest, and they reserve the right to appoint anyone to replace them and other board members in the future should they feel the need to do so, Sprint will still maintain the presence that they did before resigning
If you read my post you would see that I said our EVOs would be long forgotten by then. Yes Sprint is going to expand their current 4g network based on wimax for some time, but they will eventually convert to LTE. They have built their infrastructure with the flexibility to eventually make the transition to LTE.
Try researching before attacking DRK!

How does Sprint go about choosing cities for 4G? Also, when will most smaller "cities" finally have 4G? A year from now? Sooner, later? Does Sprint have any publication outlining their plans? I live Columbia, SC, and right now speeds are slllowwww on 3G. So when is YOUR city getting 4G? We've all been payin for it!
good luck finding that information out. I tried to contact sprint about those exact things and got the same bs over and over and over and over (yes four times )
Slowly
I live in Greenville and someone that works for Clearwire said they have one tower in the area but that's it so far. I'm not getting my hopes up for a full rollout any time soon and after getting to use 4G recently, I don't really care anymore either. T-Mobile's 3G is faster than what I've personally seen from Sprint's 4G, my wife and I are switching this summer when our ETF drops to $50/line.
I know. They pick a random city and provide customers with very spotty coverage that barely penetrates walls
You need to carry around a ghost buster battery pack to fully utilize 4G constantly any how. The only time I use 4G is when I'm plugged into a power source or to watch one video if needed. Almost useless pretty much, I'm in a 4G area and I'm using a rom without 4G and I'm just fine.

you know...if you didnt have to toggle the radio, it would be alot better. i agree with you tmobile is kicking some ass and taking names...however our saving grace for me and us is the anymobile anytime stuff. If tmob got that going id etf it...I like sprint and my 22% discount but i could pay the same on tmobile for the 3 lines I have (since I dont have to pay a 10.00 fee per line) and I could get liek the dell streak or some other snazzy gsm phone. Really cdma I personally think is a dying technology.

They are doing it based on population size. I've also heard that there is a minimum population size to even be considered for 4g.

I highly doubt this is the case. There are many examples where their roll out does not follow suit
I have to agree with elegantai, that seems like the most likely answer. I'm definitely not complaining though, they just turned it on here within the last week.
I've been wondering how they decide their rollouts. I have a feeling that the commercial is spot on
But anyway, I can't wait to try some day to day use here at KU. Been to KC a couple times and was blown away by how fast it was. 4G is supposed be activated here in a month or two, so stoked.

love the epic, awesome phone. but being stuck in 2006 with 3G data and paying basically the same as other people are paying to the other carriers with 4g data is frustrating to say the least. Especially when I was told 4G would be in my area but it isn't anywhere within 5 miles of where I live and I don't live in the boonies. Further, even where I can get 4G, its completely unusable, just goes on for a little bit, then disconnects, then reconnects. Chat told me they were still building out the network which I seriously fail to believe.
So bottom line, has anyone had any luck with getting out of the ETF fee so they can go to a carrier that didn't lie about 4G?
I have 4G data over most of the central Ohio area. It works great, very consistent and still has better coverage than any of the other networks "4G" services.
I am tired of seeing so many thread about either not having 4G or having it and thinking it doesn't work. If you don't want to pay for it, then get a phone that doesn't have the option, then you can't complain. Sprint is STILL cheaper than any of the other networks for comparable features and options. Even with a "$10" service charge for "data".
And on that note... Doing research before jumping into a contract for something that MAY or MAY NOT work is a smart idea. I didn't even buy the phone or plan to begin with for the 4G service, I bought it for the keyboard, and the 4G was a nice addition.
I really don't know what else to say, but it seems a LOT of the Epic 4G owners are whiny babies. At least the majority of the threads leading up to the Froyo release seem to point towards that conclusion.

That's pretty easy for you to say since you already have 4G.
From what I have read, no carrier has true 4G currently. But t be honest I am pretty pleased with the speeds I get with 3G.
But it would be nice to get the speed boost that sprint is calling 4g

I'm glad its working for you, why don't you try it down here in south florida. it apparently works okay for people in Miami too. that doesn't help the people that were all told they were getting it. And before you type inane stupid things, try to think before you type. I did my research, i was told 4G was coming, and specifically to my city, yet it isn't in my city or any of the neighboring cities, plus sprint is talking about switching to LTE so thats a pretty good indication that WIMAX certainly isn't getting built out anymore in areas where it is "Live". And according to sprint south florida is live from Miami Beach to West Palm Beach. Oh except for the 80% of the parts that aren't. LOL. Oh and you didn't buy the phone for 4G, thats good for you, I bet 80% or more of the people did buy it for 4G. No one is complaining abou the price, its a great price, if 4G actually worked. and the other companies like ATT Tmobile have speeds that are at least 7 times higher than 3G sprint. so I'd consider that 4G. Verizon will be there very soon and Metro, Metro of all carriers, the dog crap carrier has 4G and its half the price of what i'm paying for sprint to lie directly to me.

Such a poor argument... They are charging the extra cash now on any smartphone. Also, have you seen a single decent android phone on sprint besides the evo, shift, or epic? They don't exist for a reason, to funnel people into 4g phones.
to the op... Yeh I'm fairly sick of not having it, it's extremely close to me but it fades all the time. Basically, just like the epic itself it was a great idea, awesome technology, but poor execution leaving it lacking.
its not that I really need it that much, its the thought of forking over 150 bucks a month for 2 phones for almost the next 2 years that is frustrating, especially when 3G is out of date now, let alone by next year.

So you are saying people shouldn't try to future proof as much as possible? Not everyone can afford to buy a new phone every year or 2 years, etc. So if you are up for a new phone, why not get a 4G phone. That way, when 4G finally comes to a city that is on Sprints list, you won't have to upgrade your hardware.
Seems like Sprint isn't upgrading/expanding their 4G network at all and Sprint customers are stuck paying just as much as other people on other carriers for the same/slower speeds. Not cool
Fed up with the lack of 4G? Absolutely. And let's not forget Sprint shafting their "Premier" customers and getting rid of yearly upgrades if your plan isn't over 89.99 or if you've been with Sprint for 10 years. If Sprint keeps it up, they will continue to lose customers.
Look. The epic 4g has 4g capability. The phone is a multimedia powerhouse with or with out 4g. 4g is nice but not a necessity. Id be frustrated if I bought th phone and was paying for 4g and not getting it.
But, I live in nyc so I knew I wasgonna get 4g sooner or later so I upgraded and a week later 4g went live
You should've gone with another carrier. Like the other guy said, do research befoe signing your wireless life away for two years.
Right no I don't even have 4g service, or even 1xrtt. I'm in wifi only right now, but idc. Because I know when I get home, I'm not gonna have any service issues. I leave 4g on while I'm home in nyc.
I was seriously considering going to t-mo because my friend with his TP2 was getting 5mb/s dl speeds and stuff, but sprint came through at the right time so I stuck with them.

I spend 1/2 of my time in NYC (which has 4g) and 1/2 the time in Long Island which does not. Although it work well when the phone is actually connected, most of the time I cannot connect to it while inside a building (even in Manhattan coverage is pretty spotty) - so when I wifi tether 4G hardly ever works. In Long Island, most of the places that I am in have wifi so lack of 4G has not been a problem personally. But I understand being upset for paying the $10 a month without ANY 4G availability in the home market.
again, did the research, read the quoted press releases and the article from the newspaper down here that listed the cities 4G was coming to. so i would be happy to go with another carrier but can't fork over ETF, and buy another phone when I already forked out 500 for these.

i don't know about you, but I don't do anything major on the phone, I do like to browse the web though and occasionally download something, like maybe a new rom for the phone thats impossible to do at 3G speeds that half the time are 300K or less. want to send a picture? how good is that going to work on 300K. So its not like 4G is just for gamers or youtube fanatics. youtube isn't even installed on my phone.
I have used WiMax in Atlanta and Nashville, and its awesome.
The Epic is Epic even without 4G, but I do wish I had it here in Louisville.

My concern is they've quit releasing any sort of expansion plans. Last year when the EVO and Epic were fresh they went on and on about which markets would be getting it. Now, nothing. If I at least knew if it was eventually coming to my area I'd be happy. Sprint has until my contract is up or VZW/ATT get LTE going to get some 4G in my area or I'll finally be switching carriers after almost 10 years. That being said, I get pretty decent 3G speeds to tide me over in the meantime.

No one lied. On the Sprint website you can look at the 4G coverage map. If that wasn't good enough, you shouldn't have jumped onboard.
Verizon and T-Mobile are aggressively building out their 4G networks. ATT has upgraded its 3G and unveils 4G this summer.
Sprint's 4G expansion has mostly halted as Clearwire teeters on the edge of bankruptcy. This 'news' was obviously not known when these phones were released with Wimax touted. The OP's criticism is valid.

really?? I could look at the coverage map before they put it on the site right? before it was live in south florida? Wow i really do want this phone badly. But i'm just so afraid of sprints 3g coverage. I can barely watch a you tube video now. Anything that involves data sucks. What good is a phone if the coverage is horrable. Plus now they are really going to get hammered with to many people on the network for them to handle. Anyone else afraid of this?
I feel the same way. I live in phoenix and their 3g here (at least around my job and home) sucks balls. My friends edge tmobile phone gets better speeds.

I posted this in another thread but it applies here too. I get crappy 3G in my area and no 4G. They are so focused on bringing 3D phones but we can't even upload/stream regular vids to YouTube with their ****ty network. Why not roll out 4G in more cities and beef it up first? T-mobile is turning up the heat with 40mb in a few cities. This proves that sprint could turn it up as well if they wanted to.

I do wish that the new Evo did have the LTE radio, as rumored, but I get 5Mbps in my apartment on 4G, so I'm not going to complain too much. And I have no issues with my 3G in this area, either.
The thing of it is guys, is what are our options? AT&T-Mobile or Verizon. Both with data caps, sub-par customer service(at least from my experience with the GF's iphone) and high rates. There's really no other choice.
That being said, sprint absolutely needs to step up their network. My evo will never connect to 4G. i can be sitting in downtown Dallas, TX, right in the middle of the alleged 4G coverage area and never connect. Its worthless.
I've never had an issue with 3G. Wimax is another thing. It's mostly good but I hardly use it for anything. I'm almost always in Wifi when I want to download a big file anyway. Pretty sure they are going to eventually add LTE support to their towers since Wimax is ok for cheaply blanketing an area in Wifi-like coverage but isn't so great in big buildings and they are dependent on Clearwire's oversubscribed network.
For all the talk of "why are they worrying about 3D phones and stuff like that", they need to stay up on the flashy new handsets because that is what gets them subscribers. This is their chance to really make or break their company with the playing field narrowing soon. AT&T proved with the iPhone that folks will put up with all kinds of crap for a must-have handset so they need to keep putting out exclusives that stand out in the market in order to stay attractive to customers.
Moving to another company would cost me a lot more per month and add a data cap so I am not going anywhere soon. I used to have T-Mobile to fall back on if Sprint ever pissed me off but with them being bought up, it's time to double down on Sprint.
Since when does VZW have a data cap? And I dont mean some data cap that "may" come at some point down the road. At this point the data is still unlimited.
I live in KC, which is basically saying the Sprint HQ (overland park is a division of KC) and the service here could def be better. 3g is no too bad, unless you go to Overland Park. Which is funny, because your IN the campus, and service blows. 4g... you pretty much have to be downtown to really make it "better" than 3g. I too find it odd that t-mo can ramp up 3g speeds to topple our 4g. Co worker has tmo and he dominates me in d/l speed. Somehow for him that equates to his mytouch slide 4g being better than my evo, but then again he does have a wicked self idolize-ing issue.

Ok guys, relax. It's one of two things if you are getting slow 3g speeds.
First, Sprint is actually growing again. In some areas it's growing so much that the existing network is at capacity. It's being addressed.
Or, it's a bug with some phones on 3.70 or 3.70 based ROMs. It's being addressed in the next update (not sure if it's going to be gingerbread or not)

Not disagreeing at all with your points, but the max capacity is what the op is saying he's/she's afraid of. I've seen extremely slow coverage expansion of 4g in KC, while other carries have been going hard at it. It's doubtful they are expanding 3g much anymore since 4g is the "new baby." I like Sprint don't get me wrong, but if the op is more concerned with coverage, and the fact that we face $10 a month for 4g coverage, he may very well be better off with another carrier.
You all act like Sprint could revamp their entire network overnight if they wanted. I know for fact they are working on it, and I see signs of improvement all the time. I can get 2Mb downloads now on 3g in several locations in my city where 2-3 months ago I was lucky to get 200k. Maybe they could make people happier faster in the short term by taking shortcuts, but it looks like they're doing it right. So have patience or gtfo.

Well if it's ok in your city then that should be ok for everyone worldwide then. Try growing up before posting please.

Since when does VZW have a data cap? And I dont mean some data cap that "may" come at some point down the road. At this point the data is still unlimited.

lol there unlimited, but we can and have canceled customers for using more then 5 gb a month without a tethering plan unlimited?

Supposedly Sprint also has a "cap." Never seen it myself, but that "rumor" has gone around a bit.
I feel the exact same way. My 3g is terrible, I get anywhere from 200-700 MAX DOWN and about 400 UP. No 4g at all. :/

Try growing up?? WTF??? Did you not click on the link to see that I was trying to provide some hope for people that are not in a good data area?
I did not even say it was ok in my city... I said there are signs of improvement and there are places that are great. I was just trying to help people out who think the network sux everywhere and Sprint is not doing anything about it anywhere... because that is wrong. They are working on it diligently.
Perhaps my "have patience or gtfo" comment was a little rude, but that sums up the situation here. The network sux. It's getting better. If you can't wait for the improvements, complaining on xda is not going to do anything for you.
So I just had a very long conversation with an AT&T rep. I asked him why is my "4G" soooo slow. He told me that my SIM card said I was using my Touch Pro 2 still, I checked myself on my account and I was clearly not. So then he said the my Unlimited Data plan didn't support AT&T's 4G plan (even though 3 Advisors said it did.
After that he told me that if I wanted 4G speeds I had to get a "4G" 2GB or 200MB data plan. So I said, "Well theres been many tests on Engadget and the XDA developers and that they all had slow speed." His reply was something like this, "You're reading off of forums and blogs, which aren't official statements and I would know more about this than they would."
I got into a heated argument about how T-Mobile had way faster HSPA+ speeds and how the iPhone 4's DL and UL speeds weren't capped. He told me that there has to be capped speeds so that everyone gets a fair share. So is iPhone 4 getting faster speeds while Android phones get capped fair? F**k no.
I told him that If this Bullsh*t doesn't get fixed by the end of may, I'm switching to Verizon, where 4G really means 4G and not sub-3G.
He finally said that the speeds have been capped because they want to push more people to the iPhone 4, which can draw in more revenue.
>>I will call them again and record it. That is if people want me to.
Yes, please call back and record a CS person saying that speeds are capped because of the reasons you posted.
After that, I... might.. believe you.

LOL. You must be on AT&T side. Ill have to call bad later this week.
Ouch.. That sucks... I recently switched from AT&T to T-Mobile and the speeds are a lot better... I really hope the whole merge doesn't go through...
In my prior experience with AT&T, 3G speeds were great until everyone started using an iPhone, then their network became saturated...It's to bad they don't care about their customers and the speed as much as they do their revenue..

I'm on the side of reason.
But I'll let you be now. I forget about the "do not feed" rule sometimes.

Wow you understand. I hope the deal doesn't go through. If it doesn't then Im going to T-Mobile for the better speeds and the waaaaaaaay better customer support. AT&T = Evil Empire

What? But everyone knows AT&T lies. Im going to call again and see what they say. Ill record it with my camera (I don't trust call recorders on phones) and put it up.
What a waste of space. Ever phone company lies, its the way it is. If you do not like what ATT offers, move on.

If HSUPA or HSPA+ doesn't get enabled soon im either going to verizon with LTE and actually coverage or T-Mobile where you get what you paid for. AT&T screwed all of us, including you.
Some areas still do not have 3g, let alone 4g. I bought mine off contract, so I did not pay for 4g.
Yea... i really don't think the guy you spoke with has any idea wtf he's talking about.
"the speeds have been capped because they want to push more people to the iPhone 4, which can draw in more revenue."
Mmhmm... now let's look at the completely idiotic sounding literal version of that if we include information that we already know.
"The speeds have been capped on the Atrix and Inspire in order to push more people to buy iPhones, even though other non-4G-capable Android phones are capable of the same 3G speeds as the iPhones are. We are also not publicly stating that the iPhone is capable of faster data rates at this time in hopes that the iPhone might be their next choice if they buy a 4G-capable phone and are dissatisfied with the service."
... see what i'm getting at here?

When j bought my atrix an instore rep told me that 2
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
I talked to AT&T yesterday to ask about HSPA+ backhaul timeframe. They said they won't give a date so they aren't giving out bad information. I pointed out that AT&T said on Facebook it would be ready for Atrix and Inspire users by mid April, and the rep said that was bad information. LOL so they learned their lesson that since they can't keep promises, might as well not make any? Weak.

Dude I've had the same EXACT conversation with these BS reps (save for the last part when they admit to capping).
AHHH ---- I filed a complaint with the BBB.
I feel bad for those reps...to them its just a job, they are paid to read scripts, not dig up corporate corruption. It's like calling up the fry cook at McDonalds and asking him why your hamburger is not 100% real meat. He doesn't know, he just cooks it. If you want to talk to someone about the capping, call Ralph De La Vega's office.
Damn, this guy has 45 post and all are at&t hate. Nobody in care would ever tell you that because for one thing, it's not true, and two they would easily lose their job by saying anything like that, and because every interaction is recorded and documented on your account, they would be fired quickly. The reason HSUPA isn't enable is because android is very finicky with HSUPA. With the captivate, for example, you could change a modem file and get HSUPA, but it would normally knock out Bluetooth, or call quality. They're working to fix this, it's already in testing, so you should have your fix very soon. Also, what's your beef with the T-mo buyout? Better coverage, lower prices? Seems to be a win win for me. Either way, you can't really stop it, so just go to Verizon, get your Thunderbolt which is 1/2 as powerful with 1/4 the battery and twice the bill. Enjoy your 12mb/s (in only about 40 cities) while I'll enjoy my plenty fast 5-8mb/s when the back-haul to the towers is all complete (which in my area is the end of this month). Oh no, it actually takes time for a company to push out a nation wide roll out! Amazing that they can't just nod their head and it be done. My rant is done, but can somebody ban this hate spewer?
OH! and when you call, get the agent's UID and post it. I'll follow up with them to confirm your false statements are false.

Wow, what a load. Tons of other Android phones around the world, not to mention Galaxy S variants with the same core hardware, are using HSUPA without issue.

exactly. the only time HSUPA broke bluetooth was when you used i9000 kernel/modem together with an i897 rom. its something specific to ATT's crappy network that caused the issues.
