as the title says, the hard buttons are dimmed and doesn't turn off!
I tried and removed the battery for 40 minutes approximately, updated the ROM with the official 1.66 and hard reseted my HD2 and etc... but I can't get them off, they are dimmed and doesn't turn off.
what shall I do?
Thanks

wait a minute... did you say "you took out the battery" and the keypads are still dimmed?? while the battery is out?
you might not be seeing a dimmed light but a translucent part of the keypads instead.

no , when I took out the battery the lights turn off, I meant when the phone is ON and is in Standby mode, the lights are dimmed!
thanks again
that is something weird.
i am not aware of any settings for enabling or disabling the keypad light "except if there is a registry hack/tweak" that you can do.
Try using the search, maybe you'll find something related to it.
I think that this is a hardware failure, Because as I said, I hard reseted after I encountered this.
but, thanks again guys!

The screen backlight has a habit of turning off after a few secs, and will not come back on with the exception of about 90% of the time when you put the camera on.
This fixed itself after I used lokiwiz - but since installing other applications has returned again.
Any ideas?

I have now realised despite the phone being unlocked (sim and CID) with lokiwiz - the phone is only switching its backlight off when used with a NON original supplier sim - so clearly there is an additional lock in the phone that lokiwiz cannot see.
That must just have been a coincidence - as it is now doing it with the original sim now too.
It switches on initially - but once the screen back light foes off - either by time or by being put on standby - then only the screen resarts - but is unlit.
Although starting the camera can sometimes fix this.
It also runs very slowly often when this happens - so slowly it can take the windows busy icon ten seconds to go between each 22.5 degree incriment as the 'shadow' rotates over the circle with coloured quarters.
Any ideas?
Same issue
Did you figure out the issue? I am having the same problem.
I have never had this problem but I set up my dad's MDA Vario as a clone of mine at the weekend and got this.
The only differences are he has
1) a SIM lock pin number
2) a GPRS connection.
Both SIMS are Vodafone
Any similarities?
Backlight
Nope. I was running Custom TMO 2.17 with no issues. Earlier I installed Core Pocket Movie Player and reset. After reset, backlight keeps staying dark. I can turn it up through the settings but each time it powers off or goes into screen saver it stays dim and I have to reconfigure.

i have the same problem, it seems unrepeatable to me though, it just does it when it wants...
EDGE
Its going fine now. But I have not been near a PC for ages.
I cannot remember exactly how i did it as it was about 7 weeks ago - but i found the solution on the modico forum and the phone runs like a dream now with the exception of crashing once.
Could be a Fix !!!
I had this same problem on my xda mini s which i bought from 02 over a week ago with the back light kept going on and off..
How i got round this..
I noticed in backlight settings there r battery power and external power if you have external power turn off option say x secs set as well as battery power turn off x secs you get that random shutting off..
I removed the option in external power say turn off in 5 secs unticked that and set it only in battery power ticked
Now mine stays on for around 5 mins or whatever u wana set it to through battery power with no problems....
Hope this helps....
Anyone could help me how to solve this matter?
I just put on the table n using music for a few hours until the battery indicator below 35%, n suddenly it turn off by itself, whether I restart it again, til the Today Screen, going turned off again.
For delineation, I will give little explanation what I've done:
* I have read the post in others, like "lock" the little switch sensor behind the battery cover... I have done this, even with no battery cover attached, my magician could turn on.
Thanks....

ur battery's life is about to end!! so the best possible solution is to replace a new one.
so sad...
but thanks...
So I just noticed that something called akmd is using the majority (34%) of my battery as it sits idle.
Does anyone know what this?
I was at a full charge this morning (7:30) when I pulled it off the charger and I am now sitting at 84% just 5 hours later with no use at all.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
akmd = g-sensor
I know this is a completely stupid question.
What is the G-Sensor?
The hard wich rotate your phone whe u tilt hehehe
Ok, in case anyone cared. I figured it out. I installed Home++, which allows the homescreen to rotate based on phone orientation. This is turned off by default in the original launcher.
It was on in Home++, so it was waiting for a screen orientation shift and killing my battery while doing it. So, I turned it off, and wham, no more loss of battery for that reason.
Just in case anyone else has the same very specific problem.

Could it mean if you turn of 'orientation' in settings, that akmd is going to use less battery power (in my case about 11%)? Just tried to turn it off, I'm curious..

Probably. 3-1/2 years and 2 phones later, I can say that turning off auto-just about anything will reduce energy. Thankey for identifying the process.
yiiiz, THANKEY is a great word for that xD
Firmware KE1 on Three UK
To reproduce:
Turn power saving mode on , with a battery at 50%, set to trigger at 70%
... the power saving mode turns on OK
Now set it to trigger at 10%, your battery still at 50%, and turn it on
... surprise! it's still on
In fact you won't be able to turn it off now unless you completely turn it off as part of the first option in settings, irrelevant of battery left.

wouldn't it be just helpful when people post bugs/faults etc to write down what firmware they are on? especially ANYTHING that is vaguely related to software.
Updated. No need to act like a ****

He's not acting like an ***, he's just pointing out that bugs should be reported where they belong. xda-developers doesn't write the official samsung firmware.

exactly and how can we help you when you didn't give us any info? We can't help you unless you help us.
Sorry if I sounded like a ***. Its just that there have been so many numpties on the original SGS forum and was dreading them overflowing over here. Tiring us out with same old questions and demands whilst they don't give us any basic obvious info to work from.
Regarding your problem I tried this last night before I went to bed and it worked fine for me (on both brightness levels)
Maybe I'm its because I'm on the updated firmware. You should do the same. KE2
OK no worries
I'm not a numpty I didn't expect to receive support from these forums, I just wanted to share that I had found this hoping it would help others.
But it's all water under the bridge now, I'll update to KE2 and will report back.
Cheers!
I found that it doesn't enable the stuff it disables either like background sync while I'm charging my phone, I'll try it on KE2 and see if it still behaves that way.
i have noticed this too..from running the KE1 and KE2 firmware.
i set my power save to battery less than 30% - reduce screen brightness to 10%, screen off time 5 secs and turn off everything [like wifi].
i have found that this works as expected, when the battery gets to 30% it informs me and asks if i want to switch to power saving mode, which i accept. then when i recharge my phone and unplug it keeps the 10% brightness setting and short screen off time.
to rectify this i have to go into settings and display and retun then to what i want. then when it dropps to 30% it activates, when charged, same thing happens.
duno whats causing this or how we could rectify it :-(
I've gone through all 24 pages of threads in this forum, and found nothing like this.
When I get a text message or some other message that turns the screen on, it won't turn back off. It's a pain because it wastes battery and since I charge it at night, I don't notice it and it ends up being on all night. I don't want it to burn in or anything.
Screen timeout is set to like 15 seconds, same in GOSMS. I can't figure out if there is any wakelock causing the issue or not.
Any ideas?
Settings -> My Device -> Lock Screen -> "Secured lock time"
It's different than the screen timeout. Maybe that's what's doing it. Not sure.
Edit... probably read it too fast. This is just for how long before the screen locks. Sorry
I noticed the same. I was looking for "Developer" options like I had in the HTC before the GS4, but I can't find it anywhere.
Basically on the HTC had the Developer options that allowed the screen to stay on, even when charging.
On the GS4, like the OP said, if you get any kind of notification that wakes the screen up, it will stay on when connected to the charger.
That's the thing though, is that it does it even when not connected to a charger.
I have my secure lock time set to 3 minutes, but it will do it before or after that 3 minutes. I have read on other devices forums that it is a wakelock, but I can't find anything that could be causing it.
I think I've narrowed this down. Turn off "Smart Stay". When I take off smart stay, my screen shuts off as intended, but I think if you have smart stay on, it will try and detect anything that looks like your eyes, hence staying awake.

If this is really what's doing it, I wonder if keeping your phone face-down when charging would help prevent it. Still though, that's pretty terrible if that's what's doing it. I've only noticed it 3 times in one night, in a certain location. Once I moved my phone elsewhere it stopped.

I don't even have Smart Stay on though, or any other of the fancy features that track eyes.

And mine still turns on and stays on when it is face down.
Screen Won't Sleep
This happened to me yesterday; nothing will turn off the screen.

For whatever it's worth, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48871706#post48871706 - maybe that will be helpful.
