Hey all, Well thought I would ask, havent tried it yet.. since I am too lazy to take my sim outta my G1 heh. I know when Tmobile changed me to the smartphone internet package, my G1 internet died. However I know people who have the Android package, can use settings like internet2.voicestream.com and get internet still.
So I am wondering does the HD2 work fully with the Android data package? Any features that wouldnt work? Ill prob try it myself over the weekend, but I plan to still use my G1 as my main device.
*Ok I just said hell with it, tried it myself. YES IT WORKS! So if you have a Android phone, keep using THAT data package. This way when you put your simcard in the HD2 you can use ALL features and YES in 3G! I was able to browse, mobitv, youtube, email, gmail push etc! All of it worked! So forget using the Smartphone package which WILL cut your G1 (Or similar) internet off. Keep the Android one and be able to use all internet no matter WHICH device you plug into! =D
Oh and the Wifi Router mode works too.
I'd be interested in this as well. Since I want to do some comparisons between the G1 and HD2.
i have my android internet on the Hd2 also didnt change anything and is running fine.
According to my plan I'm on Android (not sure why because it was the smartphone plan when I bought it) and it is working fine. This may just be a glitch in their system that is showing it that way since I'm still in the middle of a billing cycle that was mostly android.
Updated 1st post, It works. =D
i had to have them switch plans as android data did NOT work for my hd2. odd.
Well they had to switch me to the smart phone one when I upgraded, Then my G1 stopped, Then I called back to have them switch me back to the Android one, then today when I tried, yes it worked on my HD2, I activated my MobiTV, then tested everything, Now I put simcard back in my G1 (Since thats my main) but since Mobitv is activated, I can controll and use everything via Wifi. I plan to use my HD2 more as a pocket pc vs a phone.. Since my G1 can wifi tether to it too for on the go web. =D
Mysticales, I'm about try my Android plan with my HD2. I had them change it back earlier to get some data on my G1. If it works I won't have to ask them to change it back.
update: It works for me as well.

Hey guys, I'm new here but I have some (nooby) questions. I'm currently using an iphone to tether my laptop using web2go from t-mobile. I got a g1 from someone and of course rooted and started tinkering with it so that I could get web2go to work on the g1.
My question mainly is if I port over say another android based os, like the droid eris os that is available, does that change the way the phone interacts with t mobile? Or would t-mobile still recognize the internal imei and not care about the os and settings? I'm mainly asking if I can port over another os onto the g1 so I can tether like I currently do.
I know there will be the people who say just buy the more expensive plans, but if I could I would. I'm tethering with these phones because I can't afford real internet!
Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
Tmobile will recognize the IMEI although I have used the wireless and wifi tether's both and not had a problem on Tmo.
wait you use the 9.99 web2go? What settings do you use? Because whenever I try it has trouble "finding internet connection" or whatever. although technically the internet should still be coming through right? It's just being subverted by the g1's software that requires the higher tier services?
If its rooted, just use the wireless tether app. You can find the link here and put it on your SD card. Download Linda file manager from the market and use it to install the tether apk. From there, you will change your phones 3G or Edge signal into a wifi one that your laptop can use. You can use that on any rom, and it doesn't matter wether its droid eris or stock. The only thing that tmobile can see is your imei and your radio version, not the rom.
ok I will try this tomorrow and get back to you. Thanks for all the help
well I tried it real quick right now and I guess I forgot to make clear whats going on. When using the G1 as opposed to the iphone, the web2go subscription gets subverted. So while web2go works with a proxy on the iphone, on the G1 it does nothing.
I have the tools to tether except the G1 / T-mobile subvert the internet. I wanted to know if this was based on imei or on a software lock. Because I have heard of people using their G1's with web2go I'm assuming it's a software lock. So if I use a rom of an os that can run web2go, will I be able to use it? or will the imei lock it out?

there's only really two different os versions. well, more, but two popular ones. 1.6 (donut) and 2.1 (eclair). does the g1 have a data plan? does it even have 3g? you say you just got it, so if you don't have 3g, there's nothing to tether. as for it not working - if you're rooted it will work. there's also a app on the market (for now) called easy tether. just use the free version.
edit: read top post more clearly - no. you can't tether if you don't have 3g. if you can, it's new to me.
one more edit: you can do what my friend did - take an old satellite dish, hardwire it to a router, and just connect a lot of wire clothes hangers to the satellite's receptor or.. er... thingy and steal wifi for like miles. ha ha.
The thing is web2go is a data plan that can access unlimited 3g through a proxy. T mobile wants users to use their strict g1 data plan, so any other data plans get shut off. I'm wondering if it's imei or software. If its a software lock then I can just install a different rom I'm guessing.
When I tether with the same data plan on my iphone i get edge speeds, the main reason i want to get the g1 working is so i can get the 3g speeds
Ok, then try this. Go to the tmobile.com website, sign in using your number and password (or create an account). When you get to the screen that shows you a picture of your phone, select the option right under the picture that says not my phone, then select any other 3G capable, non android device. That should put you in the clear for a few hours/days/weeks/months, or whenever they decide to check your account.
Ok I tried it but it still didn't work. I'm starting to think it might be the g1 software which is helping shut off the Internet. I'm going to install a new rom and hopefully I'll be able to set the settings for t mobile. Will keep u guys posted
Hey all,
I have a few quick questions, i have been using search but i havn't found my answers yet. I was wondering if there is a .cab for a barcode reader app like on android. Also is does anyone know if t-mobile USA has a fair use limit such as 5gb for data (i know verizon does). Also i'm having trouble connecting to anything online with my phone after updating to TMOUSA's new rom today.
check out omarket for a barcode reader, i use i-nigma, it does the job.
Tmo usa will definately have a "fair use" policy on data usage, it'l be in your contract or their site, the last time I checked in the UK it was only 1gb. They say everythings bigger in America though.......
Cant help you with your rom problem im afraid......
tmobilehas has disabled internet sharing capability.
try wmwifirouterapp you gotta pay but it'll work

I think you mean that they didn't include an app for it? I've been using it since the HD2 came out (and before that I used it on my HD) and it works just fine. Pretty much all custom roms have it cooked in, but you can always just download and install wifirouter cab.
As for the limit, I believe it was 5gigs and has been changed to 10gigs (pretty sure it's one or the other). If you go over, I believe they just throttle you down but they don't cut you off and there's no overage charge.
no there is an internet sharing app tmobile is doing away with it. i bought my phone back in march and it had an internet sharing shortcut and worked up until this new update. it blocks communication to their network when the phone recognizes the phone is connected via usb
I'm not a fan of the WIFI app, i think WMWIFIROUTER is much better. It seems that the Wifi app on winmo just piggybacks on my wifi network at home and extends the range. I noticed that it still has the same hostname under "status" on my pc.
my question is this.when i bought my hd2 they had to switch my internet connection from droid to windows mobile.now when i put my sim card in my g1 the internet doesnt work.is there any way around this problem?i was really. looking forward to switching phones from time to time.
i doubt its you plan it sounds like you need to set up data provisioning on the G1

how would that explain that it worked fine until i changed phones?plus the guy said i just have to switch your data plan from android to windows mobile.as i was checking out,
There are different data services that T-Mobile offers. I had to call and have them switch it when I recieved my Hd2 from Android data to standard data. Same for my gf when she switched from a Motorola Cliq (what a pos that was) to a BB Curve (not much better IMHO). They all cost the same and I would bet they are the same service. It must be a book keeping thing. There is probably no way around it, other than a call to customer service.
T-Mobile does have a way to separate the data plan for Android devices. At least I know its different for the G1.
I purchased the HD2 as a new line with data. I then canceled my G1 line and factory reset the G1. I put in the sim from my HD2 into the G1 but did not get data. I added an Android data plan on my wife's sim card and put that into the G1 and it works great.
So yes, T-Mobile has a different type of a plan for android devices, at least for the G1.
I also recently called in and told them I need to switch between the G1 and the HD2 on the same sim every other day. They said I'll have to call each time to change the data plan for it to work.
I asked them isn't there a data plan that works for both phones, the answer was no.

I was told by a rep it takes 2 to 48 hours to switch data services.
You could just figure out a way for the G1 to spoof it's identity as a WinMo device. Oh wait...that's not allowed...lolol.
On a serious note, the phones identify themselves in such a way as the T-mobile system knows if your using Android/WinMo/BB. Is it stupid? Absolutely. Can we do anything about it...not really...at least legally...lol.
Well when I had my Nexus One, I came from an iPhone so I had the regular Unlimited Web instead of the Android Web. I popped in my sim card w/o switching anything and surprisingly it worked right away, after I had everything set up then I called to switch. I then switched to the BlackBerry so I changed the internet to the BlackBerry Unlimited, and now using an iPhone as well on the BB Data Plan.
I switch quite frequently between my HD2, a TouchPro2, Nexus One, and a G1 and my data works in all of them. No calling a rep, no having to switch plans... i havent had any problems with anything so far.
I'm on the Android Unlimited Web plan. It works for my G1 and HD2.
The customer service rep will tell you that you need to switch and they are not compatible, but it is for me and other people. There was an older thread where other people also have it set up with the Android Unlimited Web.
I switched to back to Android Unlimited Web before since I wanted to test some things on my G1, and didn't switch back when I realized it also worked with my HD2. The other plan does NOT work with the G1, only the HD2.
My SIM worked fine
I just got an HD2 on Craigslist. I have the G1 data plan and when I put my SIM into the HD2 everything worked fine. My internet. text mms. all are working just fine. I don't think there is a real need to change your data services with the carrier.
I had Web2go when I was using a previous phone and then got my HD2 from ebay. Needless to say after a couple days of using the internet, TMOUSA caught up to me and gave me the 'upgrade your subscription' page whenever I would use the internet. But I finally got Web2go working on my HD2 so I thought I'd share it with you! I used the following steps to achieve this and have provided download links. I don't take any credit for these programs, just trying to inform people how to get Web2go working on their HD2!
There's two ways to make web2go work on your HD2: android os or wm6.5 os
The following steps are used to obtain web2go on your HD2 using android os.
First you must enable your phone to be flashed with a custom rom. The tutorial I used was this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=653614
The custom rom I used was this:
http://htcpedia.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1666
Next I reformated my microsd card to fat32 and placed the desire v4 into the root of the microsd card:
http://gamesquare.co.uk/desire.html
The next thing I did was install jmz's dual boot to my HD2 from microsd from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723200
Next I installed schap's registry editor to my HD2 from microsd from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1690245
I then ran the registry editor on my HD2 and went to HKLM\init and changed the name of Launch52 to Launch 62.
I then rebooted my HD2 and at the dual boot prompt, I chose 'Launch Android'.
After Android has booted, I went to Settings>Wireless&Networks>Mobile networks>Access Point Names>(Pressed the windows button and chose New APN)
The only two things I edited were these:
Name: tmo
APN: internet2.voicestream.com
I then pressed the back button and selected the newly made 'tmo' APN. I waited 30 seconds for my network to recognize it.
Now you have Web2go on your HD2! Enjoy!
Next......
The following steps are used to obtain web2go on wm6.5 os
Settings/Menu/all settings/connections/connections/add new modem
Name:tmo
apn:internet2.voicestream.com
finish
go back to manage connections then long press on the newly made 'tmo' and hit connect. Wait 30 seconds for data connections to reconfigure.
Now you have web2go working your wm6.5 as well! Enjoy!
Web2Go already works just fine on my HD2,and I didn't do any of that. Stock ROM, Opera 10, no problem...
The sytem will shut down your web2go sooner or later after it catches you using a HD2.
so in other words, you have to dual boot android to get internet on your phone? I'm guessing that you are not paying for your internet then.
No I'm paying the standard 10usd for web2go. It's just web2go is not allowed on the HD2 since it's only used for non-smart phones. You'll be saving 180usd doing this over a course of a year. I plan on running the android os on this phone permenantly (since v5 is relatively stable) and will be installing the final release when it comes.
Was fooling around with the wm6.5 side and got the internet to work with web2go also!
Settings/Menu/all settings/connections/connections/add new modem
Name:tmo
apn:internet2.voicestream.com
So I guess now I can use it on both OS's! Hope that helps everyone.

so you think you should be able to pay less than everyone else for internet??? Got it.
I would only be paying less if I were grandfathered into the older tmo internet plans.

I'm confused, switching to the HD2 REQUIRES you change the dataplan, so yes, if you are paying less than 30.00 a month, you are not paying what you are supposed to, which is why you have to do work arounds to use the internet.

Exactly, couldn't have said it better myself. That's why I wrote a tutorial to make web2go work on the android os as well as the stock wm6.5 os.
I thought web2go was basically the equivalent to the old tzones? basically the only ports open on it were 80 and 443 for web, 110 and 25 for email, and 53 for dns. maybe a few other oddballs
Changing the APN wont get you around this limitation because your account will not authenticate to the APN.
If you want to the full real unrestricted internet then you need one of the $20-30 plans that will let you do the above, + skype, telnet, irc, aim, sling player, vnc, torrents etc.
Of course doing torrents over your regular internet plan would be pretty stupid, but last time i demoed it, it did work.
Kind of like the silliness i just read about the "tethering" app that was just pulled from the apple app store. I personally dont consider an app that runs a SOCKS proxy tethering. all you would be able to do with it is web browse, but to each their own.
Before I did this, my we2go did work until the subscription upgrade page kept coming up and my internet completely shut down. I did the following steps on post #1 and now both my android and wm6.5 os's work using we2go with no restrictions e.i. android market, wm market, weathers, mails, browsers, etc....
edit: went to mobilespeedtest.com and got 114kbs.

What modem would work best with this connection? Cellular Line or Cellular Line (GPRS)?
Never mind....Cellular line will ask for a number.
Thank you
So do any of you lovely gentlemen or ladies know a good app for tether with TMobile carrier?
I got a dealer plan (unlimited data, text, 2000 mins). Its suppose to have tethering but it does not. I asked my friend who use to work there (that is how I got the line) and he said that the tethering was on my plan as it is with every other dealer line. I wasnt sure at first since I was on an iPhone and he said since my iPhone wasnt a TMobile iPhone that was why the tethering wasnt working. I then switched to Android LG G2 not to long ago, TMobile official, and still doesnt let me tether. Official app and everything. I would tell him to check the account and fix it, but he doesnt work there anymore :crying: lol. I tried clockworkmod's tether and it works, but it only works for 10 mins at a time then i got to restart the app on my computer. I want to tether so I can use my data instead of my home internet since im always lagging when I play games or surfing the web by my siblings. Been going on for a while and this is my last resort. :|
So it will be greatly appreciated if I can find a good tether app that works all the time so I can use the internet again and play some League of Legends lol.
Thanks to those who try to help, they shall receive a thanks.
