Navigation mode without destination set? - Nexus One General

For a dedicated GPS unit, whether you have a destination set or not, you can always see a 3D view of your current position. It doesn't seem to be the case for Nexus One. You can only see 3D view under Google Navigation when you are in navigation mode.
Is there anyway to trick Nexus One to run Google Navigation even though you don't have specific destination set?
Maps is also pretty nice, but it's always north-up so it's confusing sometime.

I wanted to see this too, so I made a feature request ticket: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=6839
Please star this issue if you want to see it implemented!

Done. Thanks for creating it

Oops, I searched and found out my ticket was a duplicate.

I think the problem is the lack of pre-loaded maps. Since it doesn't have the maps on SD card it downloads your route when you set it. They are probably trying to avoid the need for a constant and reasonably good data connection which would come with downloading map data on the fly.

[DEV] App to transfer GPS coordinates to a certain website (map service)

There's this free web service called "Citizen's MapSite", which is free to use, where you can browse detailed topological maps of Finland. It also has search functions to use with GPS coordinates..
I'm not sure if they have this kind of service in any other countries, but this seems like a great way of using detailed topology maps in a number of outdoor activities for free!
the site itself is kansalaisen.karttapaikka.fi. Now all we need is an application to start up the GPS and (at the push of a button) open up a browser with current GPS coordinates as the search terms. Basically an app that creates an http link using data from GPS.
..would anyone be interested in giving this a shot? In the mean while I need to manually copy and paste the coordinates
Here is a quick implementation which shows the current position.
Since I don't have a gps device and even don't live in Finland you are the first official beta tester!
known issues:
trackbar for the current zoom factor doesn't work
the network connection will not be closed on application exit
gps will be closed on application exit
Next time, please refer your requests to the Q&A section instead.
as this is already in development stages, change the subject to DEV and we'll leave it at that.
awesome heliosdev! I'll be leaving my "official beta test report" ASAP :-D
Teh Official Beta Test Report:
The search doesn't display any results and it seems its because the search is done with the wrong type of coordinates.. There's a drop down box with different types of coordinates and I think that the search should be done using "EUREF-FIN maantieteelliset (~WGS84)" ("EUREF-FIN geographical (~WGS84)" in English) instead of the "KKJ..." which is the default.
Here's an example of how the url behaves (if it's any help):
Using these coordinates N: "60.477603" E: "22.222587" (and "EUREF-FIN maantieteelliset (~WGS84)" in the drop down box) as search criteria, the site url becomes this:
http://kansalaisen.karttapaikka.fi/...ale=8000000&tool=siirra&styles=normal&lang=FI
Thanks for the feedback! I'm using the Lat/Lon coordinates. In the case of no gps device or no gps fix the application shows some fix place in Helsinki. This is the url.
Have you seen this?
To be sure that there is a gps fix try to use another gps application to be sure that gps is working and then open this application and see if it's showing the correct place.
I did some hasty conclusions yesterday, it seems.. Any-hoo: I got it working, sort of: I need to change the colon ( , ) to a comma ( . ) from the coordinates and then it displays the map of my surroundings beautifully ) for some reason it doesn't display the location arrow on the map though..? (when I search the same coordinates in opera manually the arrow is there)
new version is up which corrects the ',' to '.' issue.
Works beautifully (according to the few tests I've had time to do)!
Usability would improve greatly, if there was some sort of GPS status indication: GPS on/off, Lock/no lock and number of satellites tracked..?
updated with a statusbar showing
valid data: sat: number of sats for position|valid|total; altitude
no valid data: no position
Threre is more information like speed and heading which could be useful, too. Let's see if the new info works and then we can see how in terms of gui layout the additional information can be shown!
Btw, does the scale trackbar work for you?
Statusbar works ok, but only after 'refresh'. It would be more useful if it displayed the gps state 'live'. Ie. if there's no lock yet, but it's searching, it would show something like a row of dots scrolling. And after a lock it would display the sat info (This app has something like that for instance: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=424423). Now I need to hit refresh manually to check if there's a lock or no; at the moment I use google maps to get the sat lock and then I fire up SuomiTracker (awesome name btw to get the topomap.
The scale trackbar isn't working for me either.
I hear this works beautifully in Omnia also; someone commented on it on a Finnish mobile forum :-D

Google Maps sucks

I tried using it yesterday and almost broke my phone because it was making me so mad. If you miss a turn the directions don't update so you have no idea where you are. And the route isn't highlighted on the map like it is in every other GPS app so if you get off the route at all, it's over, you have to stop and type in the address again to get new directions. Are there any GPS apps for HD that are actually good?
There are actually a lot of programs you can use. just use google. Personally I use TomTom and i think it works quite well. It calculates a new route within a few seconds if you missed a turn
I use Google Maps all the time and like it alot. True, if you miss a turn you won't be notified (not until Google Maps Navigation comes out for WM) but getting back on track again is not at hard as you think. Just request directions from your current location and SELECT the address you typed before for your end point. I don't understand why you type the address all over again. I've done this way while travelling on the freeway at 70 mph a bunch of times and it hasn't let me down yet.

Oh yeah you're right. Clicking a bunch of stuff to get new directions is a little silly though, you have to admit.
I'll try Tom Tom and see how it is, has anyone else tried it?
I use GarminXT. I really don't see the difference between all the GPS navigation software available - the features are almost the same. The difference comes from the maps. For me Garmin's maps are the best for Bulgaria, so you should do a little research which software has the best map for your country/region.
Igo 8 for me. Superb bit of software.
agree. IGO 8 is the best.
Does anyone have the link to download any of these? I searched this forum for "gps" and it keeps coming up with nothing.
thread closed as theres been many threads like it for months
there is a list of working gps software in the wiki
read it

Offline Maps?

I want to use my device for offline maps, i think it would be the perfect device for that considering readability outdoors. I've had no success with google maps as they appear to only offer offline functionality for android 2.2 and up in version 6.9+, nor can i find a newish version that would run on the nook anyways. I was hoping someone else has found a solution for this be it with google maps or an alternative. Preferably with an ability to accept lat/long coordinates to find places.
Thanks a lot, i appreciate your time to read this and any input you may give the thread.
This would be a source of USGS topographical maps in PDF form: https://store.usgs.gov/
Unfortunately, the website seems borked.
There was a thread on GPS and Nooks.
Best bet is to interface it directly at 3.3V to ttyS1 (UART2).
You'd still need an app to deal with this all.
There's OruxMaps, it works with both online and offline maps.
to access the go-to-point feature, you need to to customize the interface:
Setting->user interface->buttons->buttons bar-> now you scroll that thing in the middle until you find an icon that looks like a marker over a line of dots and you put it in one of the side menus, now you have a go-to button.
on the same occasion you can get rid of all the GPS related buttons.

Joying 2GB Sofia for a Chevy - LIke it, want to love it

I recently purchased and had professional installed the JY-CL001N2. I like the unit but I feel with the potential it has I could love it. Here are my issues:
1. When I start my vehicle it takes 10 minutes for the GPS to lock. By the time it does, I am almost to my destination. Is there a way to speed that up? I am using GPSLock because once it locks on the signals it, I can tell it what GPS program I want it to open which leads to my second issue.
2. I like using Google Drive. I know that it is Google Maps but with Google Maps you have to select the location or select Drive. Why can't I just select drive. I know where I am going. I just like to use Drive because I can get real time traffic.
3. Since Google Maps does not support speed monitoring I am using Maps Speedometer which I like. It created an overlay on Google Maps and lets me know what my current speed is but I can't get it to open when Google Maps/Drive opens even though I have set it to do so.
4. Is there a way I can set what apps I want to open on startup?
If anyone can offer insight to these issue and/or ways to resolve it, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Google maps driving mode

Hi there,
Is there, or can somebody make, an app that opens the shortcut to Google maps driving mode? The shortcut made by maps doesn't show up on my HU and in this way i hope i can start GM in driving mode.
Google Maps doesn't create the shortcut. The Launcher does.
You are probably using CarWebGuru. That doesn't show additional intents/activities by default.
Long tab the icon, select explore and you get all available launch intents.
It should be very simple to create such a kick-start app. I already created several. I will have a look tonight.
Edit: It seems that this is only possible by specifying a destination. In that case you can't start it directly in Drive mode.
I'm indeed using CWG, my favourite because of its many customization options and it's the best looking. Too bad Google maps and cover art don't work in the main widget.
Tried the long press before but that didn't work. I hope you can make that app. That would make me, and probably other people also, very happy.

There is indeed no icon for Drive mode as Google itself does not support that.
I created an app that starts Google Maps in Drive mode, but that is actually not possible without a destination. So it will not go any farther than this.
see attached:
- apk (only a starter so only 18 Kb)
- launch icon (so you know how to find it) and it is called "StartapsInDriveMode" in the launcher
- screenshot of Maps
Tested it on both my phone and head unit and it works.
Thanks allot.
It briefly shows the full application and then switches to driving mode. This is the same behavior with the shortcut created by maps, so this is normal.
Nice job.
And btw: Google maps note also works in the main widget of CarWebGuru... I hope this stays like this.
