On the side volume toggle button it increases the ringer and the system volume in big stages (20%) is there a way of making it follow each bar at a time rather than jumping up 20% each time?
In the actual settings you can adjust the system volume by 1% increments, you cannot do this for the ringer!!!!??? it still jumps in 20% increments!!! why? and is there a way around it?
Am i the only one that finds this pants?
I would say so, yes. Because I haven't come across a phone that would let you change the ringer volume in 1% increments. All mobiles I've had in the past have 5 or 6 bars and that's it.
I also feel you wouldn't hear the difference between 60% and 61% ringer volume.
If you use the button, you get the big increments. However if you press the volume button up or down, then use your finger on the screen, you can adjust to each of the bars shown (about 15 of them).
Hopefully this will be enough increments?

I gave this advice to someone recently, and it's totally true, unless you have separate volumes for system and ringtones. The system on can be moved 1 bar at a time, but the ringtone one can't - it moves about 3 or 4 bars at a time.
You can do it with more accuracy is the sound & display settings, in the settings tab.

Nice one mate, that's great. Although you can't do that with the ringer volume, still jumps in big stages.
I wasn't after 1% increments in the ringer inparticular but 20% jumps is a bit drastic, was just thinking it would have made sense to be able to adjust both in the same way.
But your find is exactly what i was after, thanks
@ John & bcorgan,
Given that there are countless threads on here about this, and other volume related issues, does one of you want to pm tboy200 to add both your posts to the Hints & Tips thread on here? That way you both get the glory but, more importantly, we might be able to head off another load of threads on this subject.
Let me know.
Cheers

How can one quickly silence the ringer on the Diamond? On my Mogul I would press and spin the scroll wheel. I need someway of doing this while the phone is still in the holster. A nice way would be to tap any of the volume keys while the alert is playing.
If I were, say in a movie theater, and a call comes in or a scheduled alert goes off and I forgot to put phone in vibrate only mode. I need a way to quiet the phone ASAP and have no time to remove phone from case, rotate it (if I am using for example Sensorlock), then acknowledge the event.
Turning it face down is not fast enough? Besides, if you're in a theater you really should put it in vibrate mode.

True, but it means removing phone from case (velcro closed yet). As to the movie theater, that was just a scenario, I could have just as well said that you are standing in a crowded NYC subway train, I really dont want to reach down remove my phone for all to see and "turn it face down" just to quiet a ringer. A button press should be the way to go.
Im looking for one too, if i get a message i have to rpess the 'end call' button a few times before it stops vibrating and playing..
Never been in an NYC subway, but do you get a signal down there? would love to try it! I thought they were over 1000 miles deep underground. But it does sound like a useful idea.

lmao, surely not?
I don't have my handset yet, but have been reasearching in anticipation of it's arrival next week. Most phones will mute the ringer with the external volume keys as mentioned a few posts up. You can also take a look at this app in which the volume keys will silence, as well as locking the screen to prevent accidental answers or ingnores

Cheers!
Will a quick tap on the volume key silence the notification, or do you have to press down the volume key until it gets silenced and then have to press the volume up key again to reestablish the volume level. I simply need a way to "tell" the phone that I have acknowledged the event and not to continue to play the full notification tune.
I have my Diamond but I did not power it up since I did not want to activate the phone to make sure that I will be within the 30 day window so I will have the option to move to the Touch Pro when it gets released on 10/19. So my questions are theoretic and based on what I see on the screen shots and what I read, or didn't read in the owner’s manual. Anyway, I will be activating my phone tomorrow and will see if these suggestions work for me.
AEButton Plus could set the phone to silent at one tap.

Anyone know how to change the in-call screen timeout? I think it's like 5 seconds right now. Maybe like 10 or 15 seconds would be a little more practical.

Not sure but it times out so you can put it up to your face while your talking on it without the touch screen freaking out on us so i sincerely doubt there is any way to change it.

yeah but trying to navigate voicemail is a PITA... I did find the button that keeps the thing "live/on" while plugged into power... that at least is nice.

I'm not having this problem at all so I wasn't sure what people were referring to. However, I discovered that my sister was having the same problem described here and on other forums. Her phone would timeout within a second or two and it was extremely annoying to her. So off I went trying to help her.
Short Answer: Reboot the phone via the red/power key.
Long Answer: After several hours of troubleshooting with no luck I had her reboot the phone by holding down the red key and choosing to "Power off". Then hold the red key again to turn on the phone. After that it seems the problem went away. I've had her do other things but I'm not sure it was relavent so I'll stop here and see if this helps anyone else.
Huh? This is not a bug that you can simply do away with. The phone is supposed to time out.
On the other hand, I would like the option to adjust the timeout
Screen Backlight Timeout during a call
Is there a way to adjust the screen backlight timeout during a phone call? My timeout is set for 2 minutes, but during a call the screen shuts off so fast it does not let me dial extensions etc, and then pressing menu to light up, then menu to unlock then menu to bring up the keyboard, its kind of annoying. I just measured the time, its about 10 seconds.
This question is NOT ABOUT: Screen/Setting/Sound&Display/ScreenTimeout (that one has its own issues too, but this thread is specific to one issue)
Lol I have the same prob when I do phone banking. By the time I've pressed menu
Then flicked the dial buttons back up iam to late to press the button and have to start
Over again. Its really pissing me off now lol.
Adam
Amen... hopefully one of the developers can make this adjustable
Yes, it's one of my main gripes about the phone function.
They really should have made it adjustable independently of the standard timeout time. Because even voicemail prompts are a pain in the rear.
Power Manager
You can pick up the Power Manager application off of the Andoird marketplace. It allows you to modify the amount of time the screen is on during a phone call.

Really? Must be the new version I don't have. I have the first version and it lacks that function.
Thanks for the tip.
I know this thread is a bit old, but I'm having this problem and its really annoying!
I have the touch pro, and the display timeout while talking is like 5 seconds, and then I have to press that top button to get the screen to come back on, and I have to press it like 3 times till it comes back up. Really annoying when I'm pressing numbers with an automated system like voicemail.
Download power manager from the app store. allows you to change in-call time out and a truck load of other things.
If you want to find it on the net here - http://www.cyrket.com/asset/-5688572614148254173
That was driving me crazy - I changed mine to 30 seconds for in call.

These are my current customizations and turning off screen taps save me too much battery. It is important to turn those settings off because if you tap on the screen, the speaker will stay on for 1.5 second each and every time. You can hear the 1.5 second hiss if you listen closely. Disabling it makes my Xperia lasts almost forever.
Keep:
S2U2
SPB Diary on Today Screen
Alarm Master on Today Screen
Date on Today Screen
Uninstall:
Phoneweaver
Hourly Chime
Touch Flo 3D
Wisbar Advance
Turn Off:
Screen Taps Sound (each tap will eat your battery 500% more than without sound)
Hardware Buttons Sound (verbatim from above)
Auto adjust backlight
Modify:
Backlight is constant at 80%
Turn off backlight if device is not used for 10 sec
Turn off device if not used for 2 minutes
Habits:
Never turn off your phone to save battery if you are carrying the phone
Only turn off your phone if you are in the movie theater or if away from phone
What's "forever" for you? What do you do with your phone?

It lasts 1.5 hours longer on media playback
2 hours longer on games
2.5 hours longer on business activities
5 hours longer on standby
Sounds good, but why does auto adjust backlight drain the battery quicker?

was wondering that my self too - maybe because its calculating info from the LDR and such? Is the 80% what it is usually at because that seems pretty high

Oh, it's just an assumption. I'm only guessing that the ambient light sensor is no longer automated and therefore it takes less processing. And constant lighting allows for the light to not need to adjust itself.
Background applications and automatic function and unnecessary bits waste battery

I chose 80% because I want my screen constantly bright and when in the dark doesn't burn my eyes.
is there any way to shut off the sound that the lock/hang up key generates while on the today screen?
that also produces a bit of a short sound wave.

or never turn it off at all... standby barely uses any power and turning it on again uses a lot. Just sayin'

Yes, follow my Steps:
1) Press Call
2) Tap Menu
3) Tap Options
4) Look for "Keypad:"
5) Change the "Keypad:" option with OFF.
6) This will turn off the end key and the numeric keys.
7) Seriously though, if you want to disable the end key tone but keep the numeric key tones active, then you obviously have no logic at all.
8) Chances are that you dial the numeric keys more often then you press the end call button. Might as well turn if all off.
9) Since you know that the end key is pressed very rarely you might as well not mind it being enabled as a tone (especially if you need tactile hearing for the dialpad).
Therefore the end key is not a very big battery drainer.
Also I have a Samsung SCH-i760 Windows Mobile phone and when I press a numeric key / end key / or enable button and tap tones... there are no 1.5 second hissing noise. The stereo speakers are always inactive. This is a major flaw that causes your Xperia to lose a lot of battery very quickly. Perhaps this is how all mono speakers work? Does anyone know?
I was referring to the physical button.
probably should have been more specific, but it's fine, I barely touch it anymore!
and thanks for the tips, although the remark about me having no logic was hurtful.
Haha, sorry but the title of driving me crazy. It should be either; "Yes! Now my battery lasts longer." or "My battery lasts longer now(, or : or Yes!". Still it works better the first way. Sorry hah, it's just one of those things that keeps repeating itself over and over in my head.
USB Charge
I have got some experience with the battery charging.
Using USB charge or any charger with 500MA can make my x1 live 30min long than the original battery charge.
how do i reduce the call volume and keep it saved, for exampple
if my volume in call is changed to 2 bars from the bottom, if i hang up and call again, the volume is loud, unless i change from 2 bars down to 1 bar, then it goes down, and then i go back to 2 bars, then the volume goes to what it should be,
even though after i call back the second time initially, the volume sounds like its at 4 bars but the display is always 2 bars,
i think the 1.43 rom saves the bar memory, but the actual volume always stays higher,
anyway to change this or fix??
Mine is the same. No solution yet I'm afraid.

Within the last few weeks, the notification volume on my Nexus S is turning itself down to half volume. To rule out accidental button pressing, I turn the volume to max, and put it on the table, untouched. Within an hour, the volume is at halfway. Not really sure what is going on, but it's extremely frustrating because I miss a bunch of text messages as a result of this problem. If anybody else is having this problem, and knows of a solution, please let me know.
