Depending on what version of software your Hero has, the unlock code may not be accepted using stock ROM.
You might need to flash with a custom ROM (Nandroid backup first of course), and then unlock when running Modaco Custom ROM (or another, although I know MCR works for this).
You can then either return to stock or keep the custom ROM (personally, I run the modaco ROM permanently it's so fast...

Software version check by going to Settings -->About (at the bottom)
How to flash --> Google, there are loads of video guides
An example of unlocking website which requires no work, just cash ---> http://www.mobileunlocked.com/HTC/Hero

Suggest you do a search in these forums
According to many posts the Orange Hero is very difficult to unlock. Just using an unlock code will often not work - patchy results at best, with many reporting failures.
It appears that you will need to reflash a custom ROM. This is something that could brick your phone if you get it wrong. I am told it is easy if you follow the instructions carefully and there are lots of people on this forum that have successfully done it. It will almost certainly void any warranty you have on the phone (if Orange ever find out about it).
So the choice is yours.

It's not too difficult to put a custom ROM on, so long as you are sensible about it, and read the instructions as you do it.
Personally, I reckon you'll end up keeping the custom ROM after doing this (if it's modaco especially) since they are much faster than the stock ones.
You are also able to re-flash to an orange ROM if you wanted to, meaning that if you return it back to original fully, orange can't tell that you've done anything.

I think 2 years is almost a record for resurrecting an old post.
The last post was in January 2010, when locking UK Orange Heros was difficult. There are now thousands of places to get a Hero unlocked in January 2012. And the cowboy website this latest post has linked to wants £49 to unlock a UK Orange phone in 2 to 4 days! Yes you read that right! That is £29 more than Orange themselves wanted to give me an unlock code.
A few months ago when I wanted my Hero unlocked (passing on to daughter) it cost me £4 on Ebay and I got the code within an hour on a Sunday.
So I would say steer well clear of this site.
EDIT - the post I was referring to has been removed!!!

I bought a code from eBay yesterday (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NETWORK-UNLOCKING-CODE-HTC-DESIRE-G2-HERO-HD2-TOUCH-PRO-2?item=270929961249 from usman4947) for £2.95; it arrived within five minutes and it worked fine on my T-Mobile G2 Touch.

Cingular 8525 Remote IMEI Unlocking?

Hi Folks
I was wondering if someone know if the IMEI Unlocking services offered in many websites really work:
For example: http://www.gsmphonesource.com/reunbyimforc.html
It make the kind of unlocking like the unlocking software posted on this forum?
Thanks to all!!
Sergio
We have a FREE SIM unlocker which does the same, and more:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=282073
Ours keeps SuperCID forever, theirs not
Hi Pof
I have seen your great job. Thanks for that!
since I am just starting on this XDA world I dont want to mess with rom upgrading and stuff. So I felt that just entering an unlock code is 'safer' for now, but I wanted to know if that remote IMEI solution really works for using the phone with other SIM cards
Thanks!!!
Yes, it works. It has the same effect on the phone, but I really encourage you to try my solution instead, it's not that hard, but the warnings are there for you to be cautious
The IMEI is not used at all for unlocking, it's just to make sure you don't buy an unlocker from them and use it in two different devices: if you want to unlock two devices you have to pay twice
If you want to technically understand what their unlocker does, and what does mine, have a look at this post (comments #54 to #57):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=280819&p=1046444
My understanding is that the Cingular 8525 use BootLoader 1.06, which means that in order to unlock the phone, the BootLoader need to be downgraded to 1.04 (by installing older ROM), SIM unlock it, and then upgrade to new ROM with BootLoader 1.6.
This may seems complicated.
I used pof's method and had my phone up and running in less than an hour and it was FREE!
VideoFX
Call Cingular tell then u r going to europe
Call Cingular tell them you are going out of conutry and they will send you unlock caode for free in 5 days.

That's not true..
Grab pof's exe, and run the bat file. There's nothing else to do. Just sit, be patient and follow the instructions.
It's really brainlessly easy. That means, that even those without brains should be able to handle it...

It's easy. READ, READ some more, then READ till you puke. Then, follow the directions TO THE LETTER, and you'll be just fine. Nothing else to do. THEN, once it's unlocked, you'll want to flash a normal radio and a new OS.
As a newbie, I suggest you pay close attention to POF and Legolas; this stuff is EASY, but only because I've read the WIKI, lots of threads, then re-read the WIKI 2 or 3 more times.....then followed the instructions to the letter. And then go back to the WIKI just to stay sharp.
Reading the threads will give you an idea of just how many people do stupid things like NOT reading the WIKI, try flashing a new ROM or radio on a whim, follow only the directions they feel like, and turn a wonderful PDA/Phone into a useless brick. I've been around here only about 2 months but am now flashing ROM's on my CID/SIM Unlocked Cingular 8525 at will and having a ball. Will be joining the ROM Flasher's 12-step program soon.
So, read, pay attention, follow the instructions fully, read some more and read the threads so you can appreciate what happens when someone doesn't read, follow the instructions fully, etc.
Why Pay????
There's no sense in paying when POF's provided a great unlocking program here that's easy to use and works GREAT!!! This IS a no brainer.....
If you don't plan on going out of the country and wanting to change cell phone service provider, what is the benifit if unlocking the phone. I have been flashing my phone to different ROM's since the day I've had it.
I don't really see the added benifit of unlocking the phone...but then again I am a newb at this stuff.
If you have no plans on changing SIM cards, i.e. changing providers or travelling out of the country where you might want to use a local SIM to save $$, there's no need to SIM unlock your phone. If your phone is CID unlocked, then you are able to flash cooked ROMs' and ROMs' belonging to other carriers, i.e. flash a T-Mobile ROM to a Cingular phone. Unlocking also gives you access to the Extended ROM and several MB of storage space not otherwise avail to unlocked phones
Question, what difference if any is there between me getting the Unlock Code from ATT (just did it for some old V551's of mine with an email to them) and this Unlock tool of Pof's? I do plan to unlock it soon, planned on going the ATT route because I know it works. If your tool does something over and above I'd like to know.
Thank you!
question?
i'm wondering....im about to buy a 8525 tilt...i want to know:confused if i called cingular and asked for a unlock code would it cost me...also if i mess up and did it myself whats the worse that could happen to the phone......

at&t would provide you with the unlock code for free. the worst of course is your phone turning into a brick, but if you are smart enough to follow instructions it will be fine.
and one more thing........which device are you getting......8525 tilt????? if its the 8925/tilt you are in the wrong subforum, you should be looking at the kaiser section. the 8525 does belong here
ok so i just got sent an att 8525. I am planning on unlocking this phone.
I havent been on these boards in forever but has anything changed? Is there anything in these rebranded att phones that may not let me unlock? is there a newer tutorial?
thanks guys
Hi,
I just wanted to share that I unlocked my 8525 with HTC_Hermes_SIM_CID_Unlock_v3a on Vista. It went through with not one issue or hiccup.
Thanks

Solutions for HTC P4350

So, this must be my first post in this great forum so I'm not quite sure if I'm doing this in the right place.
I'm interested in unlocking my HTC P4350 and before I've posted this thread, I've already read most of the topics that talked about unlocking SIM or CID the Herald. Although, some questions remained and that's why I'm opening this thread.
First, I still can't get the difference between CID and SIM unlock and the way in which they both interact. Don't know if by CID unlocking the device I get SIM unlock, etc.
Secondly, I saw that most users tell people to follow this method, http://www.imei-check.co.uk/heraldunlock.php but I can't really judge it to say if it's safe for my money and device.
Another option was to contact Vodafone from Portugal directly and buy them a unlock code. Although I'm really not sure of this because I want a full device unlock option (CID and SIM unlock I guess) that allows me to work with other network SIM cards, to flash the device with new ROM's and to upgrade to any Windows Mobile I want. Doesn't matter if the solution is free or not. Just name one please !
PS: Also found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=433544 but I really don't know if it helps me in any way.
Peace.
CID Unlock - CID stands for Country ID..if you get to CID Unlock your phone, it means you can flash any (officially released) ROMS released for Herald. I suggest you load Hard SPL on your phone, it gets CID Unlocked plus you're safe from bricking it from wrong/bad flashing. See here
SIM Unlock - Would unlock your phone from a specific carrier and be able to use all SIM cards
It doesn't necessarily mean that when you CID Unlock your phone, it gets network unlocked too, no... they are done separately... some utilities (well on other devices) get them integrated on a single program (none i think for the Herald)
On the case of www.imei-check.co.uk, after the payment, they will be providing you an unlock kit that would SIM and CID Unlock your phone..
CID Unlock ( free thru Hard SPL)
SIM Unlock - I guess you have to pay for it since there are still no other free solutions to SIM Unlock a Herald. Contact jockyw2001 for a good price for unlocking.
Thank you very much for the help !
I'm going to use this post to say that I'm very happy with the simple and easy way that jockyw2001 got to SIM unlock my Herald. After long research in a way to unlock my P4350, a member, in this thread told me to talk to him and I did. After a 20 minute e-mail talk, I've got my Herald SIM unlocked for a small fee of 25$ US.
Nice job jocky.
So, I'm going to use this thread to put my questions to avoid starting new ones.
I've already SIM unlocked my phone with jocky and now I've done the HardSPL method to CID unlock the device.
Now comes my really noobish part. If i'm not in mistake, a WM6 update came out to the Herald and I'd like to install it on my PDA. I've got already a different looking OS because the HardSPL method but my 2 questions are about the WM6 update and the TouchIT OS install. Are they both the same thing? Which do you advise to install on the Herald?
Maybe my question is out of the context but I can't explain myself any better :x.
Regards and thank you for reading.

I just used them to unlock a T-mobile Wing. Worked beautifully, was fast and easy (with the time difference, everything was ready by the time I woke up this morning after ordering it last night).

Unlocking HTC Hero on ORANGE Rom SUCCESS!

I can confirm that you can EASILY unlock a HTC Hero on ORANGE without having the go thru the tricky procedure of installing the Modaco Custom Rom also known as rooting.
I bought a brand new HTC Hero on eBay locked to Orange, when I recieved it I noted that it was not running the latest Orange ROM 2.73.61.66 so I updated it, this was fairly straightforward as I had an Orange PAYG sim to hand which I got for FREE also on eBay which allowed me to check the version.
The only problem I had was related to Windows 7 64bit (and possibly Vista 64bit) in that I kept getting error 170 when trying to install the new Orange ROM, I ended up doing it on my Windows 7 32bit netbook instead.
Once updated I purchased an unlock code for £ 6.50 on eBay which was to unlock Hero on T-Mobile but unlock codes are specific to the IMEI not the supplier so it worked with the Orange.
SUCCESS!

I know but previously with an Orange locked phone you HAD to root in order to unlock it, which is quite an undertaking for the less technical amongst us.
Since February 2010 Orange ROM update 2.73.61.66 was released all you now had to do was update the ROM to the latest Orange ROM 2.73.61.66 which is much easier proposition. This fact is not mentioned on the HTC site or on Orange info about the update.
I am not saying rooting is still no beneficial its just there does not seem to be much regarding this new easy way to unlock the Orange out there.
My first google searches returned posts many of which dated back to 2009 and after a quick search I had come to the conclusion that unlocking an Orange Hero was not really feasable.
It was only because I won an auction for one on eBay which did not have the simlock mentioned in the listing which turned out to be an Orange that I started to look into it further and found a few references to the fact that the 2.73.61.66 ROM update solved the problem but info was still pretty scarce.
If you search this forum for HTC orange unlock there is very little information there, hopefully someone searching in future will find this and have the confidence to buy Orange locked Heros or be able to lock theirs should they already have one.
You never had to root it before you unlocked it! I unlocked my first hero the day i got it, i never rooted that one. I rooted this one and havent unlocked it

Exactly
Some Orange handsets never gave the option to input the network unlock code. Can't remember which ROM version it was now. But yeah, some had to downgrade or update to get that option. Same as mine.
I've unlocked 4 Heroes on Orange using different ROM versions..
Just to clarify - untill the release of the February Orange ROM Update 2.73.61.66 it was impossible to unlock the ORANGE variant of the HTC Hero without installing the Modaco Custom Rom first (aka rooting) which was a tricky proposition for those who did not want to get their hands too dirty.
Heros locked to other networks never had this problem and it was possible to unlock them with any ROM. The ORANGE variant needs the 2.73.61.66 ROM update to enable relatively simply unlocking.
Like I said I just updated my brand new ORANGE locked Hero from an older ORANGE ROM to the latest 2.73.61.66 ROM available on the HTC Hero UK Site and was able to unlock the phone after purchasing a £ 6.50 unlock code from eBay which was for a T-Mobile phone but the unlock is based on the IMEI not the brand so any properly generated unlock code will then work.
EDIT: I think some early HTC Heros from Orange had a ROM which did allow unlocking but that was replaced by a further set of updates which disabled unlocking untill the February 2.73.61.66 ROM update enabled unlocking once again, this may explain why some people say they had no problem unlocking their early Orange HTC Hero.

I thick your getting things a little mixed up here, for a start Installing a Custom ROM such as MC will not root your device, the fact is you need to have the device rooted (and have a recovery image installed) before you can install it.
In fact I had my device rooted for several months on the stock Orange UK ROM.
And there was never a problem whereby you could not unlock an Orange branded phone without flashing a custom ROM, I did it on the old Orange ROM (pre-feb update).
Believe me there was a problem with some Orange ROMS and unlocking, a method employed was to root the phone, installing a Modaco Custom Rom was part of the rooting process after which you could unlock.
What happened was that it would ask for the unlock code and when you entered it, it said unlock successfull but you would get a no service message when you tried a SIM other then Orange in the phone.
After rebooting the phone the unlock message would appear again and if you entered the code again the same thing would happen.
Apparently the phone would hang with a message saying unlocking so the unlock did not actually go through despite it saying it had completed successfully.
If you do a google search you will find multiple instances where people had this problem. You can also get the no service message on a phone that has been unlocked successfully (with the 2.73.61.66 ROM for example) but that is usually because the IMEI has been blocked on some (if not all) networks.
There were definitely Orange Heros that couldn't be unlocked without installing another ROM.. (you technically didnt need to root however)
I have one. I cant even remember which ROM it had when I bought it.. but the code I bought didn't work.. I changed to a custom ROM.. and it worked fine. (Quite a lot of unlocking sites tell you to do this)
Orange do seem to do it quite often as they apparently change the algorithm a bit.. they do it on nokias as well, as I tried to get orange to unlock one for me a few years back.. and Orange themselves couldnt unlock it as id flashed a non-orange ROM to it so the codes they generated (for a phone they supplied) didnt work any longer and it had to be reflashed by nokia first back to the orange rom.. so they could unlock it for me (i had to post it in to Oranges technical people in newcastle) and then i had to reflash it back to the ROM i wanted.

As you quite rightly point out you did not need to flash a custom ROM, if you downgraded to one of the earliest Orange ROMs on which unlocking was possible then you could unlock successfully. The thing is the older Orange ROMs might not have been available or people just did not know which of the oldest Orange ROMs allowed unlocking so a fair few of them installed custom ROMs to get around the problem else they put the phone back on eBay. All you have to do now is install Orange ROM 2.73.61.66 as to whether future Orange ROM updates will still allow unlocking to work is another matter.
The problem was that the phone on certain Orange ROMs would hang at the "unlocking SIM" stage, it was regarded as a firmware bug and perhaps had something to do with the algorithm as you pointed out - even unlock codes provided by Orange themselves would not work.

Its simple, first you must make sure you update to Orange ROM 2.73.61.66 which is available at http://www.htc.com/uk/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=283&act=sd&cat=all its the 2010/02/04 ROM update. This is needed to unlock the phone as many older ROM versions had a problem when it came to unlocking this particular brand of phone.
New phones from Orange may already have this update you can check which version you currently have in the Settings/About Phone/Status. At the moment there is no guarantee that future ROMs will still allow unlocking so its best to flash the latest (as of today) 2010/02/04 2.73.61.66 Orange ROM update to be sure.
After you have flashed the phone you can then buy an unlock code for £ 6.50 on eBay (from any seller) I used this eBay seller http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Unlock-HTC-Hero-Lock-T-Mobile-UK-/290421723982?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item439e7bd34e don`t worry that it says T-Mobile the code provided will unlock an Orange as well and in fact any brand of Hero just follow the instructions carefully. Simply insert your O2 sim and enter the unlock code provided when prompted - jobs a goodun!.
Once you have unlocked the phone it stays unlocked forever so you can flash future ROM updates without fear of it becoming locked again.

Yes it works, the reason why they say they do not unlock Orange is because of the problems I mentioned with some older ROMS and they do not want/need comebacks from uninformed people on Orange struggling to unlock.
When you buy the code you do not actually have to tell them which network its locked to but if you do just say its an Orange phone that has been rooted, thats what I told them although it hadn`t actually been rooted just flashed to the Orange ROM 2.73.61.66 2010/02/04.
You will notice they have exceptions to the NO Orange rule in that if you ROOT the phone then they will support an Orange unlock. Rooting is no longer necessary once you flash the Orange 2.73.61.66 ROM 2010/02/04 and they do not know this.
Hope this clears up any final hesitations.

No, you need to buy a code but villain 12 should support unlocking as it's based on a plain unbranded rom

No we are not saying this - it will never be possible to unlock a HTC Hero without an unlock code (which can be bought for only £ 6.50 on eBay).
If you could find some way of generating a valid unlock code for free perhaps by using some kind of generator then maybe it would be possible to do it for free.
But at the moment I know of no way to generate a free unlock code therefore had to pay £ 6.50 for one on eBay.
We were just talking specifically about how to go about unlocking a HTC Hero on Orange using an unlock code bought from eBay.
Hi
I have had the hero for a month now which is locked to orange
i have tried various things such as Turbo Sims, codes and etc
They didnt worked out for me. i have been looking for ages for a code.
Currently i bought a unlock code for £12, however it says "Incorrect pin"
I am currently on the Villian Rom 12.
Can any 1 help
Thanks in advance

Hero Orange UK Sim Unlock Success !!!!

If anyone is on Orange UK and has bought a Sim unlock code online that doesn't work, I got mine to work by flashing Modaco custom ROM first. (don't know why other ROMs don't let the code work but who cares ?)
So whatever ROM you are on
1. do a nand backup
2. Flash modaco custom ROM 2.9
3. Unlock SIM
4. do a nand restore to get your phone back to were it was before.
The unlock seems permanant once you've done it, irrespective of ROM.
Hope this helps someone. I'm off to grow back the tufts of hair that I pulled out trying to find this solution.
BTW I got my code from unlocking.com - Cost 10 squid and arrived in my inbox within a couple of minutes.
I unlocked my Hero at the time without flashing any specific ROM, it just worked with whatever ROM I was using at that point (I don't recall exactly which one it was, although it's likely to have been one of the Villain ones). So it's worth trying to unlock just with whatever ROM you currently have, and obviously if it doesn't work, flash Modaco as the OP says.
I can also vouch for unlocking.com, was very impressed with their speedy and secure service!

Thread Moved to General
Just so you're aware, I've moved this thread from Q&A over to General as it's more suited over here and won't fall down the list so quickly. It would keep getting completely buried in Q&A due to all the threads being created

I am not experienced so muchg with bricks unfortunately. Seems to be hard brick from what you said. Can you take it to AU shop? or are you outside Japan?
Try to look for info about normal (non-japanese) HTC One brick problems - they are 99% same phones - so it might help
Hi people. Nice to see some information about this phone.
@umka83
What ROM did you use from the list in your first post? Can you confirm, that sd-card working.
THX

Hi. I am now visiting relatives in Japan, and was thinking of changing my old Samsung Nexus S...
I like the quality of service here, and I guess I can buy a used keitai with much confidence.
So I was thinking about this one,as I can find it here for about 25.000 yens, but I am wondering if I will be able to use it normally abroad, with almost all the features.
For example, can you run the 4.2 rom in english ? is it convenient ? One-seg feature is exclusively for japan I guess, right ?
If you think there is another high quality phone that can be bought here, please advise :fingers-crossed:
Thanks.

hello,
I have this phone HTC J One (htll 22) and I use it everywhere in Europe witout problem. To answer your questions:
1) You can Run 4.2 Rom in English, French, German, Ukrainian and many other languages. You can swith to English easily via Menu>Language and Locale > English, to swith to other languages, you need MoreLocale app and root.
2) One-seg is Japan only. No other country has this type of waves.
3) You can wait for Samsung Galaxy s5 which is coming in 3-4 month (it will be quite expensive at first). Otherwise, i beleive HTC J One is the best phone on Japanese market right now. Maybe Nexus is worth a look.
4) Yes, you can buy a used phone from Yahoo auctions for about 25000 or you can buy from http://www.Zenmarket.jp, even if you are abroad. Also, I have a slightly used rooted and sim-unlocked spare phone (PM me if you are interested)
5) to use the phone abroad, you need S-OFF, Root, and Sim-unlock. it is a pain, but it can be done if you are familiar with ADB and other stuff.
6) Is it convenient? I did not like the BlinkFeed thing. So I installed another launcher. Otherwise, it is a great, durable, very good looking phone. I am not going to change it for now.
HTL22 Sim Card Not Detected
I have HTL22 (HTC J ONE) and I've followed this forum to unlock bootloader, install custom recovery, install custom mods, S-Off and all, but I've had problem with phone not detecting a sim card.
I've tried many custom roms, and none have worked and i even bought a sim unlock code from one of the websites, however I couldn't figure out how to put that in as the roms do not ask me to enter a code.
Any kind of help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Are you in Japan? Did you buy your phone from auctions?
if answer to both questions is yes - you might be a victim of IMEI - lock by AU. This happense when the first owner of the phone is not paying for the phone, and thus phone becomes locked.
Your phone will work ust fine outside of Japan, but in Japan IMEI number is blacklisted. Changig IMEI in Japan is legal (unlike in many countries) but there is no easy way to change it. And it is not allowed to discuss methods for changing IMEI on this board
How to root HBOOT 1.54
Is it possible to root and install custom ROMs with HBOOT 1.54?
There is reference to in OP to use rumrunner. Is there any guide how to use rumrunner to root v 1.54?
Thanks in advance.

wow.. this is news to me.. i was planning to buy HTL22 or Sc-01F from Amazon.. After reading abt IMEI lock, i am rethinking again..
how can anyone know beforehand if the phone is IMEI locked or not??
1) ask the seller what is IMEI number. If they do not give you the number, most likely it is blocked already
2) when you have the number go to
https://au-cs0.kddi.com/FtHome
http://nw-restriction.nttdocomo.co.jp/search.php
https://ct11.my.softbank.jp/WBF/icv...tmctr=(not provided)&__utmv=-&__utmk=79683988
3) input your IMEI in the search field and clik on CHECK (KAKUNIN)
4) if the result is ○ then no problem, if the result is △ There is a possiblility the phone will be blocked if the user stops paying the fees, and if the result is × - the phone is already blocked.
No news for 1.54 hboot? Im on Mexico and ther would be a lot of problems with duties to send and receive feom Japan.
