How can i convert ext4 to ext3? - G1 General

As the title states, my SD currently runs an EXT4 partition, however after reading around on these forums not all roms support EXT4 yet and most want EXT3 in order to work properly.. Upgrading EXT is easy im using RA Recovery Image, however how do you go from an EXT4 back to an EXT3?

don't quote me on this, but i don't think you can.
Although, you can easily just format your card then partition it again

meltus is absolutely right. the easiest way to do things is as follows:
boot into recovery
perform a full nandroid+ext backup (this is just for safety, if you feel secure, dont bother)
go to the console
at console, type UTILITY
choose the "back up apps to FAT" option
return to recovery
connect your phone to your computer
mount your SD card
backup your WHOLE SD card to your computer
unmount the sd card
partition your sd card through the recovery menu or the utility menu in console.
upgrade to ext3 through recovery or console utility menu if needed (i dont remember if ra's recovery does a straight ext3 partition)
mount your sd card when the partition is done
transfer everything back onto the sd card (which will be empty after the partition)
go to the console and bring up the utility menu
choose the "restore apps to ext" option
reboot normally.
total time: 5 minutes if you dont have much on your SD card, longer if your backup is a few GB. but this will ensure a flawless backup and restore without losing and having to reinstall any apps or having to reflash anything.

Can i go about doing this simply by going back into RA Recovery and selecting Partition SD card or will it screw it up since its already originally partitioned and its not a fresh card?
For instance if you have a clean brand new SD card u can go into RA Recovery and partition your SDCard Fat32/EXT and Linux Swaps all from the recovery menu... however if you have a card thats ALREADY partitioned, can u still do it using this method to redo everything or do u have to wipe it and get it back to a clean new card again first with no partitions

Mmmm toasty - 8GB SD Card appears to be FUBAR.

It started with I repartitioned it using the Aman RA recovery "Part SD: fat32+ext2+swap" and flashed a Hero ROM. It worked fine. When I wiped and restored CM 4.1.999 (nandroid) I couldn't get to any of my programs or anything else on the SD Card. After some wiping and some trial and error I said screw it and re-formatted (via Windows) and re-partitioned my card via recovery. Again, I couldn't access any of my programs or the card.
I can format the card as one 7.x GB partition and it seems to be OK, but when I try to partition into fat23+ext2+swap via recovery (or any combination of more than one partition using Paragon Partition Manager) it is rendered unusable. If I re-mount it to my computer I get that the drive is not formatted.
If I format it it to one partition and then try to create multiple partitions via Paragon I get "A new partition cannot be created on this hard disk. Most probably, all primary slots are occupied and there is no extended partition."
Any ideas?

I just recovered mine from this the other day...when I went into parted it was not showing the label of "primary" which was signifying it was not actually an initialized partition....even though I told it mkpartfs primary fat32 and put the parameters for it...
My fix was to use my Mac and format it to FAT standard (not FAT32) which allowed it to be seen in my Vista machine downstairs....when I insert it asked to format and I said no (as it would only format 200MB and leave the other 7.6GB unusable) and went into Manage under My Computer (right click, choose Manage) then went down and right clicked the SDHC card and chose to format it to FAT32..which it did.
Put the memory card back in the phone, went back to parted and redid my partitions and they showed the "primary" label as they should...took card out of the phone, put back in the Mac and copied over the zip I wanted to flash to the FAT32...put back in the phone and flashed with Amun-RA 1.2.3
why dont you partition using gparted on the G1? try formatting it within windows first, and then using the gparted method. it may work, may just have been a bad format/partition the first time.

I've used sdpart in the recovery. I thought that used gparted?
I also had this problem with Paragon, I formatted the card and partitioned using gparted boot cd. Works great now.

Move files from ext2 partition from one sd to another

Hey all,
In a bit of a pickle. I bought a new sd card that is faster than my previous 4GB and was wondering if there was a way where i could mount the partition and copy the data such as apps and caches from the 4GB to the new 16GB? The windows partition i'm not worried about. I loaded up my old Linux box with Ubuntu on it and when i try to open the ext2 partition it says that i don't have permissions. I tried to sudo it but still no avail.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!
easiest way to do it:
install amon ra's latest recovery
boot to recovery with your old SD card in the phone.
select the "go to console" option
type utility at the prompt
select the "back up apps to FAT" option
return to the main recovery menu
mount the sd card from recovery
copy the contents to your computer
unmount the card
remove the card and plug in the new one
partition the new card
mount the card
copy the files from earlier back onto the newly partitioned new card
unmount the card
go to the console again
enter utility again
select the "restore apps to EXT" option
reboot and you're done.
sounds like a lot of steps, but its really quite simple and gets the job done clean.

Better yet use ASTRO FILE MANAGER to back-up apps on sd from ext 2 -3....copy files on fat32 to computer then re-copy to new SD card (after partitioning) and restore from Astro again...alot faster but both will work!
The reason why i did this way cause nandroid copies everything and might paste junk back to the new card that caused the issue in the first place! Clean start!!!!!!
Thanks kusotare & djdarkknight96.
You guys are life savers. I followed kusotare's method and it worked a treat. Now i have space and speed!
Cheers to you both!

Flashing from ROM to ROM help

I am newly rooted and overclocked. Running great with Plain Jane v2.0.
I d'loaded EE 3.0 wanting to try it, not sure of steps to go between ROMS, also, looking for a stable A2SD program if not included in EE or Plain Jane
Please point me in the right direction..
Thanks
D~
boot in recovery
nand
wipe
flash new rom
and for a2sd just partition the sd card and EE will do the rest
point me to safe partition of sd card, already did complete sd card backup on my puter...
Thanks so much Char
boot in recovery and partion sd card ext 3

Clockwork Recovery screwed my microSD

I installed the latest SwiftDroid v2.0 RC4.
Before it I wiped everything.
After flashing I entered into Clockwork Recovery. I wiped data again (I had problem with repartitioning so I did it again), and then s*it happened.
I didn't know it will wipe out SD card ! I backuped it, and it wouldn't be problem if it wiped it.
The problem is, it erased ext2 partition, swap partition, and heavily crippled main FAT32 partition. Now my microSD card has only 1,86 GB, and it has 4 GB capacity! The half capacity is gone ! I checked in MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition, and couldn't beleive. OK, maybe MiniTool is wrong. I booted Parted Magic, and the same s*it !
Is there any way o claim back lost 2 GB of space, or should I go and buy new microSD?

In MiniTool or parted magic, delete all of the partitions on your SDCard. Then create a fat32 partition from the unallocated space. Note: You WILL lose all data from the SDCard when doing this. Then try re-partitioning using clockwork. Also, you don't need the ext2 partition if you are planning to use apps2sd in swiftdroid, as you can use Android's built in one that doesn't require a seperate SDCard partition.

I forgot to type I did it.
I deleted partition (it wasn't FAT32, it was FAT16 after CR messed up!), and microSD has only 1,86 GB.
Entered in Clockwork Recovery, and it can't mount microSD card.
Frustrating.

You can try something but it requires Ubuntu installed or livecd (Not sure if other distros have the same utility)
Put your SDCard into a card reader (or you can try and mount it using USB) and then search Disk Utility from the Unity menu and open it (or in the standard user interface go to System>Administration>Disk Utility)
Click on your SDCard in the sidebar, and then Choose 'Format Drive' (at the top) Choose Master Boot Record and then click ok. Then format the SDCard as FAT32.

[Q] Running CM7 off NAND - anything to consider changing SD Card?

Hi all.
I was given an HD2 running CM7 off NAND. It has a 2gb SD card in there, with around 400mb as ext3/ext4 partition.
I want to swap the 2gb for an 8gb card. Having not installed the ROM myself (and am not too familar with the process on the HD2), I'm unsure how to proceed.
Are there any files on the SD card that are likely to be needed for booting?
Can I just stick the new card in, use recovery to partition it and then remove the card - copy the old ext3/ext4 partition data over and it'll be happy?
Do I need to use recovery, can I just a Linux box to do that instead?

assuming you don't have a linux pc that can read ext partitions, id do it this way..
into cwm - full backup.
2gb card into card reader (or mount usb storage in android - or 'mounts and storage - mount sd card' in cwm) - copy off your whole fat32 partition - make sure you have hidden files set to show in windows explorer.
8gb card into phone, back into cwm, create the new ext partition.
8gb card back into card reader (or mounts and storage - mount sd card in cwm) and copy the fat 32 stuff back to the card.
into cwm - restore - advanced restore - restore the sd-ext partition only.
Thanks for the reply.
I do have a Linux PC to hand, and the HD2 doesn't have CWM on it.
So in the end, I used GParted to create a partition table that looked like the existing card and then copied the contents of the old card over. Phone booted up fine
