IGO8 and TTS has nothing to do with memory - Touch Diamond2, Pure General

A bit strange problem/issue. Most people saying TTS doesn't work on IGO8 due to lack of memory but I really don't think that's the main problem. Long story short, here are what I found out yesterday:
IGO8 used, 8.3.4.102680
TTS Susan and Dave (mod 1.0) the low quality version.
ROM Used, memory remaining and results
TESS Pride III with about 100mb ram free: Both Susan and Dave doesn't work.
TESS Leo II with about 90mb ram free: Susan doesn't work, Dave works.
I took my old Trinity P3600 out to test and here is the results:
WM6.5 OS 5.2.23017 Build 23017.5.3.0
- Page Pool 4 MB
- ULDR - removed
- compression - XPR
- .NETCompactFramework 3.5
with about 23mb ram free, both susan and dave works perfectly and IGO8 loads much faster than on Topaz.
For the above, nothing was changed, I simply swap the 4gb memory card between the device and start up the igo.exe from the card with fireexplorer.
Can anyone figure out a reason why this happens? OS built version? Page pool?
hope we can find a way and get the IGO8 to work on Topaz because obviously if it can run with only 23mb ram it will run on over 90mb ram.

Since I have never gotten TTS to work on iGo, what exactlly is the difference with the other voices available. Is it just the announcement of street names?

At this point, I really think it's more of ROM dependent. I suggest you try running IGO8 with different ROMs and see if any difference. I've never tried Dutty's rom but since you can't get it to work I guess I shouldn't even bother. I've only used the two TESS rom and one with TTS working, the other one not. In my case, nothing else is changed, just different rom.
As for voices, for what I know, there is one original high quality voice pack from IGO8 R3 and there is another one modded by others to reduce the quality so require less memory to run.

Yes, but what does the TTS voice actually do differently than the other voices? Is it just that it reads the street names as they appear? For example, Kate (my fav) will say "take the next left", does the TTS voice say "take the next left onto Main St"?

yes, TTS will tell you the street you will turn onto. this is extremely useful if there are going into multiple split roads.

Ah, thanks for that, I always wondered.
I agree that it must be ROM dependant. My friend got it to work back on his touch, but after that nothing and I have never got it to work.
...and have you asked navngo what the deal is?

I dont know if the problem is HTC Sense.
With htc Sense and HTC Leo Stock Rom 1.48 TTS dont work, if I disable Sense TTS works.
Can you figured it out

I am not quite sure either, with TESS's Pride III (sense 2.1) I couldn't get neither voice to work, with sense disabled or not. with TESS's LeoII, (sense 2.5) regardless the sense is enabled or not, as long as I have more than 47% mem free, I am able to get both susan and dave to work (low quality version TTS, voice file size about 12mb).
But, like I mentioned before, with my Trinity, with only 23mb free, I am even able to get the Susan voice (high quality TTS, voice file size about 32mb). Strangest thing and really don't know what's going on here but I think the Topaz is capable of playing highquality voice and has more than enough ram for it.

Here is a guide on PPC Geeks.
General consensus seems to be to disable Sense first.

TomTom 5.2 Update - Better?

IS there much difference in performance running 5.2 instead of 5.1 on the Universal?
Is there any difference at all?
This new version has the following new features and improvements:
Improved phone functionality for your device.
TomTom NAVIGATOR is now compatible with Microsoft Windows™ MOBILE 5.0 devices.

Don't know if i may post it here. but check this out:

Thanks. But TT 5.1 works fine on my EXEC without any problems already. I was wondering if there is an actual difference in experience? Because I dont want to fix what aint broken unless there are new features or a performance improvement, etc...
So has anyone with the 5.2 update installed experienced any significant improvement please??

Just tried the cracked one, and I can't see a difference against 5.1. The screen still draws visibly slowly and the UI is still as limiting and unsophisticated as ever.
I can't see any benefit in upgrading if TT is working already for you.
Looks like TomTom will be waiting a while longer to get my upgrade fee. I'm happy to upgrade legitimately from my legitimate v3, but I don't consider it to be a viable option at the moment. TomTom seem to have lost their way on PocketPC software since they are apparently unifying the software to match their TomTomGO platform. Sadly that leaves those of us with sophisticated multi-purpose devices wondering why we can't have the flexibility of version 3, in which we could keep the Windows Taskbar on the screen and actually use the damn operating system at the same time!
Not good, TomTom. Not good at all.
Thanks SiliconS.
You have no choice but to wait for the upgrade as I can't find any link to do this on their web site. Does anyone know of any other way of upgrading?
I have version 3 & I refuse to buy version 5 other than through an upgrade.
Mike
I have paid for the upgrade, but the cracked version saves having to mess around with their annoying registration system.
I find the UI clean and elegant. It allows you to quickly do what you need, without fuss. It also makes switching from other TomTom's (Go etc) easy. I find version 5 far better than 3. The maps are much improved too and include all of Europe. Easily worth the upgrade price.
(The screen update is slow in landscape mode, but fine in Portrait.)
i got this (on the wizard) and i still get the same backlight turning off when running it problem. and the hex edit doesnt work with this exe (well not the same values anyway)
thefunkygibbon, you need to hex edit the exe and find the 4 instances of backlight and change them to bbcklight.
Works great on wm5.
hack done
Tomtom 5.2 with hexa change
I have noticed no difference in operation over 5.1
The only change I can see is that it installs via active sink (sic) and ignores the instruction to install to the SD card by placing the application in RAM
not working correctly
this works for me but cant get any voices to work (i put them on the storgae card from original disk)
it will not find my gps either any ideas

Yea, those bozos at TomTom excelled themselves again, didn't they?

Apart from what was said on Howard Forums, which I agree with (clueless TomTom devs!), the update seems to add the ability to install without having to copy the CABS onto the phone.
Apart from that, no difference. If you start it up in landscape mode, it'll run in portrait mode.
One other hint that TomTom are clueless idiots - the compatibility list shows the Jasjar and the MDA Pro as being compatible. However, when I requested an activation code from them they insisted the M5000 was not compatible. They wouldn't accept that the M5000 and the XDA Exec were the same hardware and base image!
In tomtom V5.21 better bluetooth management and u can install directly by activesync with WM2005. For the voices you must to install with the original disk and then you can choise the voices otherwise copy tomtom directory contain the voices in "my documents"

Precisely. Activesync install was the one obvious thing they had to fix, and they cocked it up. Funny how every other WM5 developer in the world seems to manage it.

Precisely. Broken landscape mode. No support for soft buttons. So what's this magical support for WM5? Everything works the same (or doesn't) as in 5.1.

Clealry, TomTom employees are a complete bozos, and their management couldn't give a sh*t because they've got your money. No wonder people are so keen to rip them off.

Yes, but the morons f*cked up the code so it won't install to the Storage Card. One CAB doesn't ask, the 2nd CAB asks but ignores your answer. So unless you move everything by hand with File Explorer, that's 3MB of your precious main memory wasted. Don't forget it's your money that's paying them to write that crap.

i cant get voices to work or my bt gps helpppppppppppp ,ripping my hair out ive tried all the socalled fixes but no goooood any help would be really great thx

VC vs. Cyberon vs. plain old tags

I had cooked my DCD 3.2.6 ROM with the MS Voice Commander... which I like a lot. However, it seems to suck up RAM - at least 2MB I think.
I was wondering what others are using? VC or the Cyberon VC, or just sticking with plain old voice tags? I haven't played with the Cyberon VC so I don't know much about it... How much memory does it use?
I am seriously considering just going back to the original voice tags like I had before I flashed from my stock ROM. Thoughts? What do y'all do out there? Has anyone else thought that VC takes a goodly amount of RAM?
Chimp (Tom)
I use MS Voice. It does use a good amount of ram but the trade off is worth it. Read up on it. PM me if you would like to TEST it and decide if you like it... I like it best because I do not have to train or create tags.
Parcau: I already use VC, and do like it, but again I think the memory usage is just too high to justify the benefits from it. That is why I was wondering if the Cyberon VC was any better; if not, I just may have to go back to voice tags for the time being.
The XV6800 is nice, but I would have re-thought my purchase if I knew it was going to have such little memory available. Too bad no one can add more memory to it.

well, just to chime in, I personally use Cyberon's VC, and I find it works pretty good, at least for me...
Isn't Cyberon VC the same as the phone came with, that requires voice tags?
Does the OEM/Cab version floating around have any additional features over and above what the version that comes on the phone has?
I live MSVC, but the memory gets to me sometimes too, but I haven't even used my BT headset in 2 weeks so really haven't been using it. I may try without it, or go back to Cyberon, but I refuse to prerecord voice tags....

There's the Cyberon one that comes with the phone, and there's one called Cyberon Voice Commander, which is similar to MSVC, with digit dialing, etc.

iGO8 PNA version and Touch HD - TTS problems

Greetings,
Sorry to start a new thread but I have been reading for weeks so many threads, and have been asking on relevant ones the questions, and it seems I am ignored.. Do here it is..
I used to have NRG rom with iGO8 from June 25th (PNA) and TTS voices installed. It was working great. But then arrived PhamQuang with his V57 and I moved to it. I did not change anything as far as iGO. I am deleting the 'save' folder so every time I install iGO it is starting from the beginning. my sys.txt has not changed either, so technically I have a known good working setup.
On V59 the iGO installation went smooth, and I could choose a TTS voice. then, after a soft reset (or maybe after installing a cab?) my iGO became mute. TTS voices were stopped working. A regular voice does work. V61 and V62 had the same problem. I have installed V63 and again, TTS was working right after V63 was installed, but then it stopped working after a while. I suspect it is a cab i am installing after...
Has anyone got the same?
I would think it's due to lack of RAM. Does it work if you soft reset the phone (i.e. hold down the power button for a few seconds to turn it off) and load it straight away?
How about if you disable TF3D and just use the regular Windows today screen, then soft reset and try it?
bige, arghness,
it is a ram problem!
i disabled touch3d, stopped all tasks, optimized with sktools to get the maximum memory and it worked again!!!!
i activated again touch3d and tts stopped working!
thanks!!!!
Testing RAM issues
Although I found it hard to believe, as the Touch HD has so much RAM, I have checked the RAM issue as proposed..
Turned TF3D off. Checked and found I have 113M free RAM (out of 188) without doing any soft reset. Tried to change to a TTS voice- did not work.
Made a soft reset. Checked fr free RAM (TF3D is still off) - 123M free RAM. TTS still does not work.
Just to give you a clue- I used to have a trinity (64M RAM phone), and with a very lean and mean ROM I was able to turn TTS on .
PNA devices have normally 128M RAM in total (the newer ones will have 256M) and TTS runs smooth with 128M devices. The touch HD has 188M RAM, and proven not to work with 123M free...
Installed SKTOOLS. Set it to 'maximum memory' , ran it with TF3D on - still no results. Turned TF3D off - IT WORKS !!!!!
Not that I get why, but at least there is a solution...

iGo8 and Imagio

Morning all,
First I would like to wish everyone in the states a very happy turkey holiday. Hopefully yours was as excellent as mine was.
Now onto the real business. I have an Imagio that for the most part I love. While I cannot wait for the SPL and to be able to build custom ROMs I am waiting patiently.
I am trying to run iGo8 on the Imagio and have not found any definitive way of doing it. I have cobbled together some details that work, but are not very stable. Here is what I have currently:
1) iGo8.3.2 97313
2) TTS Susan
3) Dimka HD skin
I searched this section and found a thread on how to get iGo8 to run in landscape 800x480 mode. While this was helpful for the default iGo skin it blows up when trying to use the Dimka HD skin. Second TTS does not work at all, whether I have TF3D running or not. I get no soothing Susan!
I was wondering how people are doing with iGo8 and how do you have it running.
Thanks,
Steve
running 8.3.4 with default skin which I love at the native resolution and it runs perfectly!
Best 3d gps software out there.
I'm running 8.3.4.10280 installed on my SD card, can't get TTS to work but otherwise runs great in landscape or portrait. I'm using "Dave" for regular voice but no matter what I try I can't get TTS to work.
Interestingly this version can read the "geocoded" contacts addresses that prior versions can generate from your WM contacts but it can't generate the file itself so....
If you want to get your contacts to display on the map as POI, you need a different version. I currently have another version (8.3.2.97313) installed in main memory and when I add a contact I'll run this version that will generate the needed file and it adds it to the contacts on the card. This was the only feature that I thought TomTom had over the iGo but now that I got it working iGo tops TomTom in eye candy and utility (IMHO).
Please don't ask where to get the files, they're out there on the interwebs, seek and ye shall find....

HD2, iGo8 and TTS

Anybody has iGo8 (PNA edition) working on HD2 with TTS (US voices) ?
I'm having a problem with it ... only one TTS voice (Dave) works OK. Others (Susan) does not. Non-TTS voices are OK.
If you have your iGo8 working fine on HD2 with TTS, can you post you sys.txt file ?
I also want to say that it WORKS after having HTC Sense disabled and soft-reset. But doing this before each start of iGo ? There should be better way.
Some people complain about Dutty's TaskManager conflict with iGo. I do not have Dutty's
could you post the cab for the one that is working or tell me where you got it from, cause i only have non TTS voices working.
Here we go
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=405616
But I only was able to use "Dave Low quality" And I dont like it, because IMHO women's voices are easier to recognize in a car, probably higher pitch.
Seriously ... what would be alternative to iGo on HD2 ? With TTS and for 480x800 screen and good USA maps ? Disabling Manila and rebooting every time just to have TTS working with iGo is kinda overkill
Use copilot, I actually paid for the full version because of this problem with igo. Plus I get traffic updates for 19.99/year not too bad.
tts not working with HD2?
There is something really wiered going on with TTS and HD2.. plenty of memory, but tts will not work. even when it does for a while, it stops.
Had iGO8 working on the HTC P3600 (64M RAM) with tts, the HD , but not the HD2. A real mystery regarding memory management..
As for Copilot- yes, I have bought a license, but two problems:
1. After you use iGO - hard to 'downgrade' to it.
2. Lack of maps. I travel a lot and iGO covers much better almost anywhere i travel to..
Any solution?
I ended up going for iGo8 Primo. It has TTS voice (women) which works. It supports different TTS engine (Nuance) which requires less memory/resources/whatever. It does work. Primo also supports Loquendo TTS engine (which is used in iGo 8.3.x) but I run into same problems with it. So now I'm using Nuance.
All maps/poi from iGo 8.3.x work in Primo. Resolution is not native 800x480, but 400x240 used instead. Still ... surprisingly good graphics.
I cannot post any links (warez) but you'll find them
